DOMINIQUE GONZALEZ-FOERSTER M.2062 DOMINIQUE GONZALEZ-FOERSTER LOLA MONTEZ IN BERLIN, 2014 Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster’s presentation of Lola Montez in Berlin continues her ongoing project M. 2062, begun at the 2012 Memory Marathon at the Serpentine Gallery, London. M.2062 is a prospective and fragmented opera, in which two groups of characters from the 19th and 20th century discuss the possibility of an opera in the 21st century. Characters who have appeared so far are Ludwig II (via the eponymous film by Luchino Visconti), The Boy With Green Hair (a pacifist film by Joseph Losey), Scarlett (based on the fictional Scarlett O’Hara, played by Vivien Leigh in the film Gone with the Wind), and Edgar Allan Poe (an author whose works deliberately blurred the distinctions between fantasy, fiction and alleged reportage). The figure of Lola Montez similarly addresses the creation of a composite biography from fact and fiction, in literature and cinema. Lola Montez has re-invented herself through stage and a fictional biography. Max Ophüls film explores this dimension of self-narration inside a circus structure. Lola’s apparition is a multi-layered moment with the exceptional participation of Ari Benjamin Meyers as the ring master and Gabriel Loebell Herberstein as the clown.
