The parish village of Inari is the centre for Finland’s Sámi culture. Fed
by the water of dozens of fell highlands, flowing into the western side
of Lake Inarijärvi, is the so called mother of all rivers, the Juutuanjoki
River, from which evidence of settlements have been found dating
back over 8,000 years. It is in this district where you will find the Siida
Sámi Museum and Nature Centre, which is a great place to start your
exploration of Sámi culture and the nature of the region. In the Inari
surroundings, the Sámi traditions thrive and blossom with handicrafts
and reindeer husbandry. The mystical Sámi Ocean, Lake Inarijärvi,
opens up in front of you in the village. Nevertheless, many islands,
such as the old sacrificial island, Ukonsaari Island, hold fascinating
stories from days gone by.

Often called the Golden River, the Ivalojoki River flows into the village
of Ivalo, which is the commercial, administrative and transport centre
of the Inari Municipality. Ivalo Airport is located 10 kilometres south
of the village. Ivalo is located along the no. 4 main road and at the
junction of the Raja-Jooseppi road leading to Murmansk, Russia. The
village has daily bus connections for many destinations. For those
touring Sámiland, Ivalo is an excellent place to get all your supplies,
licences and food before heading beyond the road network. There are
also plenty of opportunities for experiencing husky dogs in the village
surroundings. The Ivalojoki River that flows through the village, is not
only a legendary river for the gold it holds, but also a wilderness river,
renowned for its trout and grayling. With its occasional white water
sections, the river is outstanding for rubber boat rafting or canoeing.
Zentrales Dorf der Sámi
Der als Goldwäscherfluss bekannte Ivalojoki fließt durch Ivalo, das
Handels-, Verwaltungs- und Verkehrszentrum der Gemeinde. Der
Flugplatz von Ivalo liegt etwa 10 km südlich vom Dorf. Bei Ivalo
kreuzt sich die E75 mit der zum Grenzübergang Raja-Jooseppi und
von dort weiter nach Murmansk führenden Straße. Vom Dorf aus
verkehren täglich Busse in mehrere Richtungen. Naturtouristen können sich in Ivalo gut mit Ausrüstung und Proviant eindecken und die
erforderlichen Lizenzen einholen. In der Umgebung des Dorfes gibt
es auch zahlreiche Möglichkeiten, Huskys zu erleben. Der das Dorf
durchfließende Ivalofluss ist nicht nur als Goldwäscherfluss legendär, sondern auch für seine Forellen- und Äschenbestände bekannt.
Der stromschnellenreiche Fluss eignet sich auch hervorragend zum
Rafting oder für Kanutouren.
Saamenmaan keskuskylä
Ivalon kylä on Inarin kunnan kaupallinen, hallinnollinen ja
liikenteellinen keskus. Saamenmaan kiertäjälle Ivalo on loistava
paikka hankkia tarvittavat varusteet, luvat ja elintarvikkeet
ennen suuntaamista tieverkon ulkopuolelle. Kylän läpi virtaava
Ivalojoki on paitsi legendaarinen kultajoki, myös erämaajoki,
joka on tunnettu taimenesta ja harjuksesta. Se soveltuu myös
mainiosti retkeilyyn kumilautalla tai kanooteilla.

Four is a symbolic number for Kaamanen. This little Inari Sámi village
is known as the borderland of four tribes and the crossroads of four
important roads. Indeed, Kaamanen is a rendezvous point offering
road and snowmobile route connections north, east, south and
west. Kaamanen has a strong fishing and hunting culture. Trout and
grayling migrate along the Kaamasjoki River and other waterways
in the region. Abundant with wild fowl, the district is internationally
renowned among ornithologists and the area has received praise
from bird photographers as being a dream location. At the feeding
spots in Kaamanen, you can sport many species of Arctic birds, and
the chances of spotting these species elsewhere are very slim. The
wilderness district of the Muotkatunturi fell highland opening up to
the west of Kaamanen does not have any marked hiking trails, but
the more experienced hiker will be able to enjoy the most beautiful
landscapes with fells and winding rivers.

hier gelangt man über Straßen-, aber auch Motorschlittenrouten nach
Norden, Osten, Süden und Westen, Kaamanen hat eine ausgeprägte Fischerei- und Wildniskultur. Der Fluss Kaamasjoki und die anderen
Gewässer des Gebiets weisen reiche Bestände an Forellen und Äschen
auf. Aufgrund der zahlreichen Waldhuhnarten ist das Gebiet weltweit
auch bei Vogelbeobachtern sehr beliebt und gilt als Paradies für Vogelfotografen. In Kaamanen kann man an den Fütterstellen zahlreiche arktische Vogelarten beobachten, die man woanders nur sehr selten vor die
Linse bekommt. Im Westen von Kaamanen erstreckt sich das Wildgebiet
des Fjälls Muotkatunturi, in dem es keine gekennzeichneten Wege und
auch nur wenige Hütten gibt. Erfahrene Wanderer können sich hier in
Ruhe von der Schönheit der Fjällnatur bezaubern lassen.
The Village of Three Languages
The Karigasniemi village has three languages and cultures; Sámi,
Finnish, and Norwegian. Thanks to this mix, Karigasniemi has a
rather special ambiance, which can be sensed in the inn. In fact, it
has been said that the best night life of the Tenojoki River Valley is
found in Karigasniemi, a place to which Norwegians from Karasjoki
travel 18 kilometres to party. The border river at Karigasniemi
has always brought people together, instead of keeping them
apart. The village is located at the confluence of the two rivers;
Inarijoki and Tenojoki, which means the surroundings offer great
opportunities for wilderness fishing and fly fishing along the smaller
rivers. Karigasniemi is an excellent base for trips heading to the
Arctic Ocean, the rugged northern Norway landscapes or hiking the
surrounding Muotkatunturi and Paistunturi fell wilderness regions,
and the Kevo Strict Nature Reserve.

Im Dorf Karigasniemi sind drei Sprachen und Kulturen zu Hause: die
samische, finnische und norwegische. Dank dieser Vielfalt bietet Karigasniemi ein ganz besonderes Ambiente, in das man u. a. im Kievari
eintauchen kann. Denn was das Nachtleben im Flusstal des Teno angeht, ist Karigasniemi nicht zu schlagen. Es zieht sogar Nachtschwärmer aus dem 18 Kilometer entfernten norwegischen Karasjok an. In
Karigasniemi hat der Grenzfluss schon immer Menschen zusammengebracht, statt sie zu trennen. Das Dorf liegt an der Flusskreuzung
von Teno und Inarijoki, so dass die Umgebung Angelsportlern ausgezeichnete Bedingungen bietet, ihrer Leidenschaft zu frönen. Karigasniemi ist ein hervorragender Ausgangspunkt für Touren zur Eismeerküste und in die schöne Landschaft Nordnorwegens sowie für
Wanderungen zu den umliegenden Fjälls Muotkatunturi und Paistunturi und den Naturpark Kevo.
Kolmen kielen kylä
Karigasniemen kylässä kolme kieltä ja kulttuuria, saamelaisuus,
suomalaisuus ja norjalaisuus, risteävät. Tenojokilaakson
vilkkaimman yöelämän sanotaankin löytyvän Karigasniemeltä,
jonne väki saapuu illanviettoihin 18 kilometrin päästä Norjan
Karasjoelta. Karigasniemellä rajajoki on iät ja ajat erottamisen
sijaan yhdistänyt ihmisiä. Kylän sijainti Tenon risteyksessä
tarjoaa hienot mahdollisuudet eräkalastukselle ja pienempien
jokien perhokalastukselle.

Valley of the Golden River
Kultainen jokilaakso
Lemmenjoki on Suomen suurin kansallispuisto, josta löytyvät
myös kuuluisat kultamaat. Jokiveneillä pääsee kanjonia myöten
syvälle puiston erämaahan, ihastelemaan sen nähtävyyksiä
kuten tunturijonoja ja kymmenmetristä Ravadasköngästä.
Lemmenjoen saamelaiskylissä puolestaan pääsee tutustumaan
artesaanien työpajoihin, poronhoitoon ja paikalliskulttuuriin.

Finland’s largest national park is one of the best for accessibility. River
boats take visitors along the Lemmenjoki River stretching tens of
kilometres through canyons and deep into the wilderness of the national

at a height of ten metres. Lemmenjoki is also the locations of the famous
gold prospecting grounds, and gold diggers still work there to this day.
For those looking for peace and tranquillity, the expansive park has areas
where you can hike for days without seeing anyone else around. The
Lemmenjoki Nature Information Hut is a good place to start exploring
the national park. The Sámi villages of Lemmenjoki will introduce you to
workshops of local artisans, reindeer husbandry and local culture. In the
winter, the expansive region provides excellent routes for cross-country
skiers and snowmobile riders all the way to Inari and the Levi resort.
Accommodation and activity services are available for visitors all year
round from Lemmenjoki and the village of Menesjärvi on the shores of a
beautiful lake.
Goldenes Flusstal
Der größte Nationalpark Finnlands ist einer der am besten zugänglichen. Auf Flussbooten kann man durch das Canyon des Lemmenjoki
über viele Kilometer bis tief in die Wildnis fahren, wo es unzählige Natursehenswürdigkeiten zu bewundern gibt. Am Lemmenjoki liegen auch die
berühmten Goldfelder, auf denen man noch heute Goldgräber sieht. Der
ausgedehnte Park eignet sich hervorragend für Wanderer, die gern allein die Stille der Natur suchen. Man kann hier tagelang unterwegs sein,
ohne auf eine Menschenseele zu treffen. Als Ausgangspunkt für eine
Wanderung im Nationalpark eignet sich hervorragend die Naturhütte am
Lemmenjoki. In den samischen Dörfern entlang des Flusses kann man
u. a. Kunsthandwerkstätten und Rentierfarmen besuchen und das lokale
Kulturleben kennenlernen. Im Winter verläuft durch den Park ein ausgedehntes Netz an Langlauf- und Motorschlittenrouten, auf denen man bis
Inari und Levi fahren kann. In den Dörfern von Lemmenjoki und Menesjärvi stehen Reisenden das ganze Jahr über Fremdenverkehrs- und Herbergsbetriebe mit ihrem umfangreichen Angebot zu Verfügung.
Tri-Cultural Wilderness Village
The wild eastern wilderness village of the Sámiland, Nellim, is located
close to the Russian border, on the shores of the Inarijärvi Lake. The
grand Inarijärvi Lake can be accessed from the centre of the Nellim
village by boat in the summer and snowmobile in the winter. Originally,
Nellim was a village of the Inari Sámi, but the 1920s and 1930s brought
Finns to work in its forestry sites, and later on after the Second World
War, it received the Skolt Sámi from Petsamo. Today the village is
known as the meeting point of three cultures. Among the places worth
visiting in Nellim are the Paatsjoki River boundary bridge, the Historical
Rautaportti Trail, and the Orthodox Church of Saint Tryphon of Pechenga.
The Vätsäri wilderness opening up to the north of the village, and the
Tsarmitunturi wilderness to the south are some of the rare locations
where you may even have the slightest chance of spotting a bear in the
wild. You are much more likely to be able to enjoy the Northern Lights
in Nellim, as there is no street lighting to spoil the view of the Aurora
Borealis in the starry skies of the wilderness.
Das Wildmarkdorf
Nellim liegt im „wilden Osten” von Sápmi, nahe der russischen Grenze,
am Ufer des Inarijärvi. Auf den großen Inari kann man direkt vom
Dorfzentrum aus mit dem Boot fahren oder im Winter auch mit dem
Motorschlitten. Ursprünglich war Nellim ein inarisamisches Dorf, in den
20er und 30er Jahren kamen jedoch viele finnische Holzarbeiter hierher
und später auch Skoltsamen aus Petschenga, das im 2. Weltkrieg an
Russland abgetreten werden musste. Heutzutage ist das Dorf als Ort
der Begegnung der drei Kulturen bekannt. Einen Besuch wert sind hier
u. a. die Grenzbrücke des Paatsjoki, der Geschichtspfad Rautaportin
historiapolku und die Kirche des Heiligen Tryphon von Petschenga. Im
Norden des Dorfes erstreckt sich das Wildgebiet Vätsäri und im Süden
liegt das Fjällgebiet des Tsarmitunturi, wo man mit viel Glück sogar einen
Bären in seinem natürlichen Lebensraum erleben kann. Im Winter ist
aber ein ganz besonderes Spektakel garantiert, wenn über dem dunklen
Land die bunten Polarlichter den Himmel erstrahlen lassen.

Nuorgam Holiday Village
Happy villagers live in Nuorgam, the northernmost village of the
European Union. The around 150 inhabitants of the village live off
tourism and cross-border trade. One of Nuorgam’s special appeals
for tourists is the promise of a large catch of salmon. The legendary
fishing spots on the Tenojoki River, classed as Europe’s best salmon
river, such as Alaköngäs, attract fishermen from all over the world in
the summertime. Happiness is not only found with its friendly people,
but also from the beauty of nature and the uninterrupted tranquillity. In
Nuorgam, visitors can either experience Finland’s longest polar night
and the nightless night of the Midnight Sun. Between 16 May and 29
July, the suns doesn’t set at all. The fell countryside, Northern Lights
and the nearby Arctic Ocean offer travellers plenty to admire at the
northernmost point of the string of pearls.

Arctic Fells for the Hiker
Surrounded by fell highlands, the Saariselkä tourist resort is situated
between the Urho Kekkonen National Park and the Hammastunturi
wilderness district. The Saariselkä resort has an abundance of
services on offer in a small area. You don’t need a car to get around
in Saariselkä. In the winter, Saariselkä is the northern dream of crosscountry and downhill skiers. In the summertime, hikers, mountain
bikers and canoeists use the village as their base, from which hikes
and excursions are taken to the diverse and magnificent national park
scenery and the Ivalojoki River. The services in Saariselkä, beautiful
fell highland nature and the national park with the widest range of
trails and cabins make the region a must for true lovers of the great
outdoors. In addition, just south of the resort are the tourist centres of
the Laanila gold grounds, Kakslauttanen and Kiilopää.
Hiking in arktischen Fjälls
Das Fremdenverkehrszentrum Saariselkä liegt mitten im Fjällgebiet,
zwischen dem Nationalpark Urho Kekkonen und dem Fjäll Hammastunturi. In Saariselkä wird auf kleinem Gebiet viel geboten. Hier
kommt man auch ohne Auto zurecht. Im Winter ist Saariselkä ein
Langlauf- und Abfahrtsparadies. Im Sommer dient es Wanderern, Bikern und Kanufahrern als Stützpunkt für Touren in die Landschaft des
Nationalparks sowie für Bootstouren auf dem Ivalojoki. Die schöne
Fjälllandschaft von Saariselkä und der Nationalpark mit seinem ausgedehnten Strecken- und Hüttennetz machen das Gebiet zum lohnenswerten Ziel für Naturtouristen. Im Süden von Saariselkä liegen
das Goldgräbergebiet Laanila sowie die Fremdenverkehrsgebiete
Kakslauttanen und Kiilopää.

Sevettijärvi Suomen Lapin koillisnurkassa on ainoita paikkoja,
joissa vielä voi arkenakin kuulla käytettävän koltan- eli itäsaamen
kieltä. ”Erämaan aateliskansaksi” kutsuttujen kolttasaamelaisten
rikas kulttuuriperinne käsityötaitoineen on vahvasti läsnä kylän
arjessa. Näätämöstä, valtakunnan rajakylästä, on linnuntietä
vain 12 kilometriä jäämerelle, johon laskee myös lohestaan ja
taimenestaan kuuluisa Näätämöjoki.

Located in the furthest north-eastern corner of Finnish Lapland,
Sevettijärvi is one of the only places in the world where you can still
hear Skolt or the Eastern Sámi language being spoken every day.
Popularly known as the “nobility of the wilderness”, the rich cultural
heritage of the Skolt Sámi with their traditional handicrafts are
distinctly present in everyday goings-on in the village. As the crow
flies, it is only 12 kilometres from Näätämö, the national boundary
village, to the Arctic Ocean, to which the Näätämöjoki River flows,
well renowned for its wild salmon and trout. Nature, reindeer and
fishing have provided subsistence in the area for millennia. In fact,
there was no choice but to survive, as Sevettijärvi got its first road as
late as the 1960s. Nowadays it is almost impossible to find authentic
and unique Sámi and reindeer villages such as Sevettijärvi. At
Sevettijärvi you can explore the Skolt Sámi Heritage House of Skolt
traditions, and the Orthodox Church with its charming cemetery.
Heimat der Skoltsamen
Sevetti im Nordosten von Finnisch-Lappland ist einer der wenigen
Orte, an denen man auch im Alltag noch die Sprache der Skoltsamen
und Ostsamen hören kann. Die reiche Kulturtradition der Skoltsamen,
auch Adelsvolk der Wildmark genannt, ist z. B. immer noch in Form
von Kunsthandwerk im Dorfalltag lebendig. Vom Grenzdorf Nätäämö
sind es 12 Kilometer Luftlinie zum Eismeer, in das der lachs- und forellenreiche Näätämöjoki mündet. Natur, Rentierwirtschaft und Fischerei
bilden seit Jahrtausenden die wichtigsten Erwerbszweige. Hier musste
man seit jeher nach den Gesetzen der Natur leben, da der Sevettijärvi
erst in den 1960er verkehrstechnisch erschlossen wurde. Heutzutage
sind solche samischen Rentierdörfer fast nirgendwo mehr zu finden.
In Sevettijärvi kann man das Traditionshaus der Skoltsamen sowie die
orthodoxe Kirche mit ihrem schönen Friedhof besuchen.
Slow Down in Utsjoki
Along the grand salmon river of Tenojoki, the Sámiland traveller will
find true peace. Utsjoki is the only municipality in Finland that has
a Sámi majority, and a laidback and tranquil way of life that is sure
to brush off everyday pressures. In the municipal centre, the parish
village of Utsjoki, you can explore the historically significant church
cabin dwellings, an area that has been inhabited since prehistoric
times. The current of the Tenojoki River is ideal for salmon trolling,
regardless of whether you choose to go upstream or downstream
from the village. Hidden among the surrounding fell highlands,
however, are salmon and grayling fishing areas ideal for ice fishing.
The Arctic fell highland nature beckons hikers to become familiar
with the way of life in the district and to enjoy the sceneries. The Ellin
Polku trail, close to the village, is a good day trip destination. For
more experienced and hardened hikers, the route running through
the Kevo Canyon is an unforgettable lifetime experience.

Am mächtigen Teno findet der Besucher von Sápmi Ruhe und Frieden.
Utsjoki ist die einzige Gemeinde Finnlands mit samischer Bevölkerungsmehrheit, hier kann man vom hektischen Alltag entspannen.
Im Kirchdorf kann man das historisch bedeutende Kirchhüttengebiet
besuchen, wo schon zu prähistorischen Zeiten menschliche Siedlungen standen. Lachs kann man auf dem ganzen Fluss fangen, ob
man nun zum oberen oder unteren Lauf fährt. Zwischen den Fjälls
versteckt liegen Forellen- und Saiblingsgewässer, die vor allem zum
Pilken einladen. In der arktischen Fjällnatur kann man die Seele baumeln lassen. Ein interessantes Ziel für eine Tageswanderung ist der
Naturpfad Ellin Polku, der am Kirchdorf verläuft. Für erfahrende und
abgehärtete Wanderer bietet die Route durch das Kevo Canyon ein
unvergessliches Erlebnis.

Mahtavan lohijoen Tenon varrelta Saamenmaan kulkija löytää
todellisen rauhan. Utsjoki on Suomen ainoa saamelaisenemmistöinen kunta, jonka leppoisuudessa ja hiljaisuudessa nykyelämän kiireet karisevat. Kuntakeskuksessa, Utsjoen kirkonkylällä, voi tutustua historiallisesti merkittävään kirkkotupien
alueeseen, jossa on asuttu jo esihistoriallisella ajalla. Tenojoen
virta sopii mainiosti lohensoutuun, lähteepä sitten kylältä ylätai alavirtaan.

and Utsjoki is said to be Finland’s most beautiful
road. Plenty of fantastic landscape routes for
motorists, motorcyclists, cyclists, boaters and
hikers alike.
