Company Overview
Dalmatian Corporation, started by Gay Santelmann in 1994,
is an Annapolis-based design and manufacturing firm
specializing in apparel and footwear. In addition to Gay and
her husband Andrew Kontola they have 5 employees. Their
16,000 sq. ft. warehouse is located near Baltimore, Maryland.
The company has three main divisions:
ADULT FOOTED SLEEPWEAR
PajamaCity.com features Big Kid PJs brand adult footed
pajamas (or “Footies”), available in a wide variety of colors,
fabrics and sizes.
SWING DANCE FOOTWEAR & APPAREL
Dancestore.com features the Aris Allen brand of swing dance
footwear.
The Aris Allen Wholesale Division sells footwear to 40
retailers, mostly in the U.S., Canada, Sweden and the U.K.
Aris Allen is the largest swing dance footwear manufacturer
in the world.
RENAISSANCE BOOTS
House of Andar produces a small line of men’s high quality
Renaissance boots.

Gay Santelmann
Head Designer
Gay’s formal training as a graphic artist as well as her love of jazz-era footwear has
served her well as the owner of Dalmatian Corporation. The products produced by
the company are far from run-of-the-mill and have required more than their share
of trials and errors to arrive at the line they produce today.
In the 1980s she owned an industrial ad agency, producing advertising for equipment
manufacturers. A decade later she gave it all up to start a shoe business and hasn’t
looked back since.
For inspiration when designing the Aris Allen line she has a 500-pair collection of
shoes from the first half of the Twentieth Century and more than 100 pounds of
catalogs from the same period.
One might guess that designing shoes from an existing pair would be a breeze...
until the first batch arrives from the factory. Months of research occur before a
style is approved whether from an existing vintage model or a completely fresh
concept (always with a retro feel). We’ve learned the hard way that it’s the subtle
things that make a shoe easy on the eyes. The
thickness of the sole, the choice of Blucher or
Balmoral, the position of the buckle, the height
and profile of the heel - all can make or break
a style.
The sleepwear is designed in much the same
way. Months of research goes into every design
and print produced by the company.
Their diligence has paid off. They have an
almost unheard of 10% return rate (industry
standards are 30-50% for mail order apparel)
and an enthusiastic celebrity fan base including
the likes of Debra Messing, Tom Arnold, Carrie
Ann Inaba, Kevin Sorbo, James Kyson Lee,
Justine Bateman, Mehki Phifer, and Johnny
Galecki.

Gay (yes, that's her real name) has had a pair since high school (a red and white striped
pair from the Sears 1983 WishBook). But they were falling apart and she is a very bad
seamstress. Unable to find really nice ones that fit well, they started manufacturing
them.

Owner and CEO Gay Santelmann (yes, that's
her real name) could not find decent

1997 she began importing a few styles from
Germany.
In 2003 she met Andrew Kontola, a fellow
Lindy Hopper, and together they launched
Aris Allen.
