Off-road bicycle racing
Leo Geoffrey loves riding his BMX bike and his dream is to go to the Olympics.
Leo first got interested in BMX racing when he went to watch his cousins in a competition
at the age of eleven. He hired a bike there for a pound and immediately fell in love with
the sport. 'It was the best pound I’ve ever spent,' he says. Leo is only seventeen but he
has already had lots of success, and got first prize in a world BMX competition last summer.
BMX racing is quite a hazardous sport and last year Leo broke his arm and his shoulder.
This did not stop him wanting to do more competitions. He exercises every day. He rides
his bike for two hours or more and often he goes to the gym or the swimming pool as
well.
Like many sports people, Leo believes in luck as well as hard work. 'My father gave me a
lucky charm and I took it to the first competition that I won. Now I take it with me everywhere I go. I'm sure that it brings me luck because the one day I left it at home, I broke
my shoulder!'
