Die häßlichen Bilder aus asiatischen Gerbereien
haben uns tief erschüttert. Uns bei HAIX gleichzeitig aber auch daran erinnert, dass so etwas
hier nie ein Thema war. Selbstverständlich arbeiten wir viel mit Leder. Aber von wo unser Leder
her kommt, das zeigen wir gerne: In der Lederfabrik Heinen im Rheinland blicken wir hinter die
Kulissen. Das von der Traditionsgerberei selbst
ins Leben gerufene Label terracare® erfüllt die

HAIX-Levels in der Herstellung verschrieben.
Neue Produktions-Anlagen, der Einsatz von Erdwärme und Solar-Energie, biologische und chemische Abwasserreinigung und hohe soziale
Standards für die Mitarbeiter sind Teil unserer
Philosophie. Das erwarten wir auch von unseren
Zulieferern bis ins letzte Glied. Jede Lederhaut
trägt beispielsweise eine eigene Produktionsnummer. So lässt sich die Herkunft vom Weiderind bis in den Schuhkarton zurückverfolgen.
Über diese Nachhaltigkeit in unserer Produktion
haben wir bei HAIX nie viel gesprochen. Sie ist
und war bei uns immer eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Ein Weg, den wir konsequent weiter gehen
und holen Technologie aus Asien nach Europa

Our second leather supplier is Viviani, a family-owned business in Croatia. This company is
equally committed to the high HAIX quality and
environmental safety standards in the production of leather. Modern production facilities, the
use of geothermal and solar energy, chemical
wastewater treatment, workplace safety and a
commitment to the well-being of the workforce
are just some of the issues HAIX insists on when
choosing its suppliers. Each hide must for example be labelled with a unique production number. This enables us to trace the origin of the
material from the shoe box back to an individual
animal.
At HAIX, we never needed to discuss the sustainability of our production – for the simple reason
that our processes have all been designed from
the very start with sustainability in mind. As
we continue pursuing this policy, we are bringing
tanning technology back from Asia to Europe.
We want to create jobs for young people in Europe by implementing new training programmes
and employing more staff here.

Galileo TV-Team testet HAIX Fire Flash
Härter als die Realität. Vor laufenden Kameras mussten die HAIX Stiefel
Nehmerqualitäten beweisen. Eine Prozedur mit Scherben, Nägel, Glut und
Nässe. Am Ende staunten die Tester nicht schlecht: Erstaunlich, was dieser
Schuh alles aushält.

Tornado von Oaklahoma – wenn Einsatzkräfte Menschenleben retten, dann haben sie eines gemeinsam: die Schuhe.
Die Heldenstiefel…“ von HAIX. Die Anmoderation von Pro7 Ankerman Aiman
Abdallah verspricht einiges. Das vom
Wissensmagazin GALILEO geschickte
Aufnahme- und Tester-Team, übertraf
die kühnsten Erwartungen: „Experten
prüfen für uns“, hieß es im Vorfeld
und: „Wir testen aufs Extremste!“ GALILEO blieb der Ankündigung in nichts
schuldig. Ein altes, abruchreifes Industriegebäude wurde eigens angemietet.

This is how Pro7 presenter Aiman Abdallah introduced the HAIX boot, setting the bar high from the very start.
The GALILEO edutainment show of
PRO7 recruited a team of expert testers and followed them with cameras.
“We will test the boots to their limits”
was the promise of GALILEO, and that
is exactly what happened. For this
programme, the TV production team
rented an industrial building and hired
professional testers of the fire brigade
in Munich as well as a pyrotechnician.
Gerne hätten die Tester die HAIX-Stiefel
klein gekriegt. Wodkaflaschen knallten
auf Stiefelspitzen, zerborsten in 1000
Splitter. Scharfkantige Fensterscheiben
knirschten unter Extrembelastung. Feuerwalzen, Bauschutt und Nagelbalken
– nichts konnte den HAIX Fire Flash
beeindrucken. Am Ende heizte der Pyrotechniker die Glut auf Maximaltemperatur. 800 Grad und mehr. Das Ergebnis nach 25 Sekunden im Höllenfeuer:

versengte Einsatzhose sowie eine Messung im Inneren des Stiefels. 36 Grad
Celsius. Das Galileo Team sprachlos.
They set to work with the intention
to utterly destroy the HAIX boot. They
threw vodka bottles at the toe cap,
producing thousands of shards. They
walked over glass window panes that
scrunched under the extreme load.
Rolling fires, building rubble and nailed
boards – nothing made much of an
impact on the HAIX Fire Flash. At the
end, the pyrotechnician brought the
cinders to maximum temperature. After 25 seconds of a monstrous fire at
temperatures of 800°C and more, an
exhausted fire fighter whose trousers
were scorched to his knees emerged
from the heat. When measuring the
temperature inside the boot, the testers were simply speechless: 36°C!

München und das Oktoberfest – eine Liason, die klingt wie Weltstadt und Kultur. Über
sechs Millionen Besucher zieht das größte
und bekannteste Volksfest der Welt jährlich in
seinen Bann. Sie trinken 7,5 Millionen Liter
bayerisches Bier und essen eine Million Portionen Hendl, 70.000 Schweinshaxen und 114
ganze Ochsen. Zwei Wochen eine einzige große Feier. Eine Millionenstadt im Ausnahmezustand. Fast unbemerkt von den Besuchern
gilt dieser Ausnahmezustand auch hinter den
Kulissen. 2031 extra Polizei-Einsätze in zwei
Wochen. 7551 Wiesn-Besucher versorgte das
Bayerische Rote Kreuz. Und die Münchner
Feuerwehr mit ihren Notarztteams rückte alleine am ersten Samstag pro Stunde 54 Mal
zu Einsätzen aus. Unter ihnen die leitende
Oberärztin Dr. Viktoria Bogner.

Munich and the Oktoberfest – nothing attracts the masses more than a city of culture
and a beer festival. Every year, more than six
million visitors come to Munich to take part
in the largest public festival in the world. They
consume 7.5 million litres of Bavarian beer,
eat one million roast chickens and devour 114
ox spit roasts. For two weeks, Munich is one
great fun fair and the city of several million
people ceases to operate normally. Behind
the scenes, away from the eyes of the visitors, everybody is on high alert. For these two
weeks, an extra 2031 police officers are on
duty. In 2013, the Bavarian branch of the Red
Cross assisted 7551 visitors to the famous
“Wiesn” fair grounds. On the first Saturday
of the Oktoberfest, the fire brigade and the
emergency medics were called to 45 incidents
per hour. Among them was medical consultant
Dr. Viktoria Bogner.

Dr. Viktoria Bogner kommt spät an diesem
Tag. “Notfall”, entschuldigt sich die leitende Oberärztin in der Notaufnahme der Klinik für Allgemeine, Unfall-, Hand- und Plastische Chirurgie der Ludwig Maximilians
Universität München. Eine abgebissene
Lippe ist auch für die versierte Medizinerin
kein Alltagsdelikt.
Treffpunkt Oktoberfest-Wiese. Der junge
Mann wird sie Dank seines ‘Souvenirs’ in
Erinnerung behalten. Die Kollegen von der
Polizei berichten in ihrem täglichen Rapport
am nächsten Tag wie folgt:
“Am Nachmittag des ersten Wiesnfreitag
geriet eine alkoholisierte 30-jährige Amerikanerin mit einem 23-jährigen Australier
in einem Festzelt in Streit. …mit den Faustschlägen gab sich die rabiate Dame nicht
zufrieden. Sie biss dem Australier ein Stück
aus der Unterlippe heraus und spuckte dieses auf den Boden. Das abgebissene Teil der
Unterlippe konnte dem Australier in einer
Klinik wieder angenäht werden. Die Täterin
wurde festgenommen.”
Für die Notärztin an diesem Tag ein “sportlicher Einstieg”, wie sie sagt. Standardbehandlungen auf der Wiesn sind Schnittverletzungen im Gesicht. “Wenn Masskrüge
fliegen, gibt’s oft schwerste Schnittwunden”, erzählt Viktoria Bogner. Schlimm ist
daran auch, dass es oft völlig Unbeteiligte
erwischt.
Zu den unglaublichsten Einsätzen zählen
sicherlich die „Knödel-Reanimationen“.
Die Schweinshaxen auf der Wiesen sind
berühmt. Mit Knödel und Soße ein Gedicht.
Doch wenn nach der 3., 4. oder gar 5.
Mass Bier sich Alkohol und Übermut ungesund zusammentun, dann kann es schon
passieren, dass einer den Knödel plötzlich
in einem Stück verschlingen will. Was nicht
gut gehen kann. Solche Erstickungsfälle
haben die Münchner Medizinerin und ihre
Kollegen „schon mehrfach reanimiert“.
Oft ist es nicht einfach mit den Patienten
Kontakt aufzunehmen. Sofern sie überhaupt ansprechbar sind, kommt ein englisch-chinesisch-japanisch-italienisch-französisch Gebrabbel über die Lippen. Dirndl
und Lederhosen sind dabei schon lange
kein Indiz für die Herkunft mehr. Aus vielen
Ländern gibt es All-Inclusive-OktoberfestReisen. Flug, Hotel Festzeltreservierung
und bayerische Tracht inbegriffen.

Das Münchner Oktoberfest ist eine eigene Kleinstadt in der City. Auf der 340.000
Quadratmetern arbeiten 12.000 Leute. Für zwei Wochen im Jahr wird die Theresienwiese zu Füßen der Patrona Bavariae zum Nabel der Welt.

Bogner, is late for work today. „Sorry, there
was an emergency,“ explains the senior consultant at the clinic for emergency medicine,
hand and plastic surgery at the hospital of
the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich.
A bitten-off lip is not just not something she
has to deal with every day.
She met the patient on the Oktoberfest
grounds. The young man will probably remember her all his life, as not even the most
experienced surgeon would be able to fix his
lip without some scar. The police report of
the incident reads like this:
“In the afternoon of the first day of the Oktoberfest, a 30-year old American female
and a 23-year old Australian male ended up
in a fight in the beer tent. The young lady did
not only dish out some punches but bit off
a part of the Australian’s lower lip, spitting
it on the ground. The severed lip was then
sewn back on in hospital. The American visitor was taken into custody.”
Dr. Viktoria Bogner is not too perturbed: “This
was a good warm-up for things to come”. The
most common injuries during the Oktoberfest
are cuts to the face. “When beer mugs start
to fly, they often cause serious lacerations,”
explains Viktoria. In many cases, it is innocent
bystanders who are injured.

During the Oktoberfest, the “Wiesn” in Munich becomes a city within the city. Around
12,000 people work across an area of about 340,000 square metres. For two weeks a year,
the “Wiesn” grounds around the Bavaria statue teem with visitors from all over the world.

however what our medical experts here call
“dumpling resuscitations”. The “Wiesn” restaurants are renowned for their excellent
roast pork knuckles, served with dumplings
and gravy. After a few tankards of beer, spirits sometimes get a bit too high, and some
guests try to swallow a whole dumpling in
one gulp. With disastrous results. Viktoria
and her colleagues have been called more
than once to resuscitate people whose food
got stuck, blocking the trachea.
In many cases, it proves very difficult to communicate with casualties. If they are still conscious, they might try to talk to the emergency
medics. It is then up to them to find out whether they speak French, English, Japanese or
Chinese... The traditional outfits of “Dirndl” and
“Lederhosen” have long ceased to give any indication of the country of origin of the patient.

che junge Ärztin dann diesem hardcoreEinsatz? Um überhaupt hier als Notarzt
stehen zu dürfen, bedarf es eines Medizinstudiums, das in der Regel sieben Jahre
dauert. Anschließend sind drei Jahre Berufserfahrung und dabei eine ganze Reihe
von Spezialeinsätzen gefordert. Der medizinische Wiesn-Dienst beginnt um 9 Uhr
morgens und dauert bis um 02 Uhr in die
Nacht. Pro Einsatz erhalten die Ärzte-Helfer
eine Pauschale von vier Euro. „Wegen Geld
bestimmt nicht“, lächelt die Tochter des bekannten bayerischen Filmregisseurs FranzXaver Bogner. Wenn der netten Ärztin das
Wort „Idealismus“ über die Lippen rutscht,
ist das Leuchten in ihren Augen nicht zu
übersehen. „Man ist halt auch ein Münchner“, sagt sie. Da gehöre das einfach dazu.
So wie die Theresienwiese zur Stadt. Das
Notärzte-Team rekrutiert sich jedes Jahr
aufs Neue aus einer überschaubaren Gruppe gleichgesinnter Mediziner. Ohne sie
wäre die wichtige ärztliche Erstversorgung
auf der Wiesen kaum möglich.
Trotz allem, was sie bei ihren Einsätzen
sehen und erleben: Auf die Wiesn und ins
Festzelt gehen sie auch privat immer noch
gerne. „Das Oktoberfest in München ist
halt einfach einmalig und trotz allem wunhm
derschön.“

• 172 Fahr-, Schau- und Laufgeschäfte sind auf dem Oktoberfest
• 293 Marktleute verkaufen Lebkuchenherzen, Zuckerwatte und sonstiges
• 1.180 Tonnen Abfall (Restmüll, Speisereste) fallen pro Jahr an

• 20 Prozent der Fundstücke werden wieder abgeholt

and LJUBICA KORUNI from the
HAIX plant in Croatia put on their
boots to compete in the Firefighter Olympics 2013 (officially
known as CTIF 2013 – 15ème
CONCOURS INTERNATIONAL DES
SAPEURS-POMPIERS), which took
place in Mulhouse, France. The
newcomers showed great skills
and endurance and won the 4th
place in the LADIES B. category.

Why does a highly qualified doctor volunteer to be on call during the Oktoberfest? All
emergency doctors working on the “Wiesn”
have completed their studies, which normally takes around seven years. They subsequently complete their practical training
over three years, working in different hospital departments. During the Oktoberfest, the
shift of the medical emergency team starts
at 9 a.m. and ends around 2 a.m. Per shift,
the medics receive a flat-rate allowance
of 4 Euro. “I am certainly not here for the
money,” says Viktoria with a smile. As she
talks about her commitment to patients and
their welfare, her eyes light up. And there is
more: “After all, I am from Munich, and the
Oktoberfest is part of my city and culture.
I couldn’t just stay away.” Every year, the
medical emergency team recruits new staff
from a group of doctors that share Viktoria’s
view. Without them, it would be impossible
to provide first aid and emergency treatment
to the thousands of people that gather on
the “Wiesn”.
Despite the many horrible injuries they see
and treat, in their free time, the medics still
meet for a beer in one of the enormous
tents on the fair grounds. “The Oktoberfest
is simply part of life in Munich. We wouldn’t
miss it for anything in the world!”

herüber. Der Patient. 36. Männlich. Schädelhirntrauma. Jede Sekunde zählt. Am Patientenübergabe-Punkt Nässeschlieren auf dem Boden
von der rollenden Transporttrage. Notarzt und
Rettungssanitäter übergeben an den Anästhesisten und sein Team. Alles verläuft reibungslos. Eine perfekte Übergabe wie immer. Das
ist trainierte Routine und Perfektion im Ablauf.
Ein rutschiger Bodenbelag? Darf keine Rolle
spielen! Zuverlässigkeit von Medizin und Equipment retten hier Leben.

Einer meiner Freunde empfahl mir Haix Stiefel. Er ist auch Motorradfahrer und war als Soldat der schwedischen Armee für die UN in Sri
Lanka und Afghanistan stationiert.
Ich war davon begeistert, wie atmungsaktiv und bequem die Schuhe
waren. Ich trug sie auf meiner Fahrt zur Arbeit und in Meetings, aber
auch, um in Flugzeugtanks herumzuklettern und in Fabriken herumzulaufen, in denen Sicherheitsschuhe vorgeschrieben sind.
Ich habe schon immer Motorräder geliebt und ich habe davon geträumt, die Welt zu umfahren, seit ich das Buch „Jupiters Fahrt“ von
Ted Simon gelesen habe. Eine Reise um die Welt ist ein gewaltiges
Vorhaben, das viel Zeit und Geld erfordert und für das man ungebunden sein muss. Es war nicht meine Absicht, so lange unterwegs zu
sein, aber ich betrachte diese Reise als eine einmalige Chance in
meinem Leben. Ich habe noch so viel Spaß, warum sollte ich also
stoppen!
Ursprünglich wollte ich durch Südamerika oder Russland fahren, aber
ich wollte mein Motorrad nicht von Europa weg verschiffen. Und in
Russland war es zu kalt, als ich meine Reise beginnen wollte. Es war
jedoch der richtige Zeitpunkt für Afrika und ich bin so froh, dass ich
meine Reise dort begonnen habe. Ich erlebte das Abenteuer meines
Lebens und lernte dabei so viel für die Fahrten, die vor mir lagen.
Mein Motorrad ist ein 1991 Yamaha Tenere, ein altes Motorrad, das
weitverbreitet ist und gegenwärtig in Europa nicht viel kostet. Es hat
einen einfachen, luftgekühlten Viertaktmotor, der stark genug ist, um
mich und meine 50 kg Gepäck zu befördern. Zugleich ist das Motorrad insgesamt leicht genug, dass ich es nötigenfalls aufheben kann.
Ich habe ein paar Änderungen an der Federung und am Getriebe
vorgenommen, aber im Großen und Ganzen ist es ein serienmäßiges
Motorrad. Es ist eine unglaublich robuste und einfache Maschine.
Und ich bin noch immer der Überzeugung, dass es mich problemlos
um die Welt bringen würde, wenn ich es pfleglich behandelt hätte.
Bei meinen anderen Motorrädern in Großbritannien mache ich die
Wartung selbst, aber Überlandfahrten stellen einen vor völlig neue
Probleme, mit denen ich unterwegs umzugehen gelernt habe.

or Russia, but I didn‘t want to ship my bike out of Europe and
Russia was too cold when I came to start my journey. The timing
was right for Africa, however, and I‘m so glad that I started my
journey there. I had the adventure of my life and I learnt so
much for the road ahead.
My bike is a 1991 Yamaha Tenere, an old bike that is very common and cheap to buy in Europe these days. Its engine is a
simple, air cooled 4-stroke that provides enough power to keep
me and my 50kg luggage moving and overall the bike is light
enough that I can pick it up when I need to. I‘ve made a few
modifications to its suspension and gearing but its mostly the
same standard bike. It‘s an incredable robust and simple machine and I still think it would take me around the world without
problems if I had looked after it correctly. I maintain my other bikes myself in UK, but overland riding presents a whole different
set of problems that I‘ve been learning to deal with on the road.

und fuhr durch die westlichen Länder bis hinunter nach Kapstadt. Ich durchquerte Mauretanien, den Senegal, Nigeria,
Kamerun, Gabun, den Kongo, Namibia, Angola, Südafrika.
Nachdem ich herausgefunden hatte, wie man von Kapstadt
nach Buenos Aires kommt, begann ich meine Reise durch
Südamerika. Ich plante dafür höchstens ein Jahr ein und
mein einziges Ziel dabei war, alles zu sehen und mein Spanisch zu verbessern.
Firstly was riding down through Africa. Starting at Morocco and then passing through the Western countries
down to Cape Town. I passed through Mauritania, Senegal, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Namibia, Angola,
and South Africa.
Then, after I’d figured a way to get to Buenos Aires from
Cape Town, I started riding around South America for up
to a year with no particular agenda other than to see it
all and practice Spanish.

The driver: Ali Gharib, an experienced off-roader and former
soldier, but a newbie when it comes to rally racing. Ali Gharib is
preparing for what promises to be the greatest adventure of his
life. He relies on his military training in the German army where
his physical and mental strengths were put to the limits.
The undertaking: A video camera will accompany him for one
year, documenting his journey to the finish line and telling his
story of “Dream Dakar”.

aus der Gerberei entsprechen lebensmitteltauglichen Standards. Ein
Teil davon geht in die Gelatineherstellung. Ein anderer Teil wird der Bewässerung eigener Treibhäuser für den ökologischen Gemüseanbau
zugeführt. Jede Lederhaut trägt eine eigene Nummer. So lässt sich
die Herkunft vom Weiderind bis in den Schuhkarton zurückverfolgen.
Die Christliche Initiative Romero bescheinigt HAIX: „Um die Lieferanten bei der Umsetzung des Verhaltenskodex zu unterstützen, ist
das Unternehmen in ständigem Kontakt mit denselben“.
Jetzt gehen wir den nächsten Schritt. HAIX holt Technologie aus Asien
nach Europa. Initiiert durch eine beispielhafte Technologie-Koordination und mit neuen Ausbildungskonzepten für Arbeitsplätze, die der

For HAIX sustainability in production has long been a matter of course,
as it goes hand in hand with product quality. We are committed to safe
and environmentally friendly production procedures, social fairness and
the well-being of our staff. These are our core values that underpin all our
activities.
“The stringent production standards we apply at our plants must of course
also be met by our suppliers,” says HAIX CEO Ewald Haimerl. Among the
tanneries that supply us with leather is Heinen, based in Germany. This
company has for a long time been certified for ecological production. Viviani in Croatia is working hard with us to improve its ecological footprint.
Waste material leaving the tannery actually meets foodgrade standards,
and some parts of it are used for the production of gelatin. Some of the
wastewater is fed to the company’s greenhouses for the irrigation of the
organic crops. Each hide is labelled with a unique production number. This
enables us to trace the origin of the material from the shoe box back to
an individual animal.
The Christian Initiative Romero is impressed by the efforts made by HAIX:
“The company maintains close contacts with its suppliers in order to assist them in implementing the corporate principle of sustainability.”
HAIX is now taking a next big step to bring the technology from Asia back
to Europe. Through a new cooperation model for technology and forwardlooking training plans, the company wants to secure jobs in Europe and
give young Europeans a chance to become skilled workers.

Wenn Helena Ljubić von ihren Firmen und ihren Produkten erzählt,
leuchten die Augen der attraktiven Südost-Europäerin. Leder ist
ihre Welt und Viviani ihre Firma. Genauer gesagt auch die ihres
Vaters und ihres Bruders. Ein hundertprozentiges Familienunternehmen. Die Gerberei draußen auf dem Land, die Verwaltungszentrale in Zagreb. Ihr Bruder Ivan ist der Chef der Produktion,
ihr Vater der Grand Seigneur. Der Kreativkopf aber ist die quirlige
Kroatin. Sie bringt neue Farben ins Leder, experimentiert mit modernen, eigenständigen Designs - auch mal für Swarovski oder
Louis Vuitton -, sie knüpft Kontakte, beeindruckt durch ihr geniales Organisationstalent und erstaunt durch ihre Spontanität.
Resetari, eine gute Autostunde südlich von Zagreb. Wir treffen
Helena in der Gerberei, flankiert von ihrem Vater Bozo und ihrem
Bruder Ivan. Von außen versprüht das Gebäude eher einen spröden Charme. Im Büro aber wird schwarzer Espresso gereicht.
Ledermuster hängen an den Wänden. Moosgrün, ultramarinblau,
purpurrot. Ordner in Regalen dokumentieren die Herkunft der
Ware. Von der Rinderzucht, über das Schlachthaus bis zum Gerbeprozess.
Ivans Reich ist die Produktion. Er entschuldigt sich für ein paar
nasse Stellen am Boden. Wo die Häute angeliefert und dem
Enthaarungsprozess zugeführt werden, lässt sich das kaum vermeiden. Die großen Holztrommeln sind nagelneu. Im Trocknungsraum hängen die frischen Häute wie Fledermäuse von der Decke.
Alles picobello aufgeräumt.
Am Ende der Produktionsstraße liegen die Muster zur Qualitätsprüfung: Braun, schwarz, blau, rot, in allen Tönen und Schattie-
rungen. Die komplette Produktion ist zertifiziert vom TÜV Nord
und HACCP. Viviani ist „einer von weltweit nur 40 Herstellern, die
den Gore-Tex Standard erfüllen.“ Darauf ist Helena zu recht stolz.
Seit vielen Jahren ist Viviani HAIX-Lieferant. Kaum einer verinnerlichte die HAIX-Qualitätsphilosophie schneller und nachhaltiger
als der sympathische Kreativmotor der kroatischen Gerberei.
Die Prozessoptimierung überwachen zwei junge Doktorandinnen
der Zagreber Universität in den hauseigenen Labors. Am Ende
des Prozesskreislaufs filtert die neue, hauseigene Kläranlage
das Wasser chemisch und biologisch so sauber, dass es zur Bewässerung von Tomaten, Gurken und Paprika im Gewächshaus
hinter der Gerberei verwendet werden kann. Durch den sauberen
Produktionsprozess erfüllen die Schnittreste heute sogar Lebensmittelstandard und wandern in die Gelatine-Produktion. „Ein
gutes Nebengeschäft“, sagt Ivan. Früher hätte man diese Abfälle
teuer entsorgen müssen. Das Geld investierten er und sein Vater
lieber in eine Erdwärmepumpe und in Solarzellen. 2014 steht die
Nachhaltigkeit in Sachen Energieverbrauch auf dem Programm.
Viele Investitionen und jede Menge Arbeit.
Als wir abends die drei Ljubić in Zagreb nochmals treffen, ist der
Arbeitstag der kroatischen Unternehmerfamilie noch lange nicht
vorbei. Soviel Engagement in die Nachhaltigkeit braucht schließlich einen griffigen Namen. „Natural Footprint“ macht zwischen
Cevapcici, gebratenen Paprika und Djuvec, dem kroatischen Ratatouille, plötzlich die Runde. Wer auf die Idee kam? Es muss
Helena gewesen. Der Slogan passt. Zur Firma, zur Familie und
zu Viviani. Ein Unternehmen auf einem faszinierenden Weg in die
Zukunft. hm
When Helena Ljubić starts to talk about her companies and products, her eyes light up. Leather is her business – and Viviani is her
passion. Together with her father and brother, the young Croatian
runs the family-owned business. While the tannery is based in
the countryside, the Viviani head offices are located in Zagreb.
Brother Ivan is responsible for production and father Bozo is still
the boss. Helena, however, is the creative mind behind the company’s success. She experiments in new, contemporary designs
and colours – also for Swarovski and Louis Vuitton. Thanks to her
outgoing personality, she has no problems establishing new business contacts. Her exceptional organisational skills keep the business rolling.
The town of Resetari, about an hour’s drive south of Zagreb. We
meet Helena, Ivan and Bozo in the tanning shop. At first glance,
there is nothing particularly special about this company. In the
office, we sit down for a cup of espresso. The walls are covered in
leather samples – from moss green and ultramarine to deep purple. Folders on shelves contain the documents that allow Viviani
to trace each and every hide from the farm to the abattoir and
the tannery.
Ivan oversees the production and gives us a guided tour through
the factory. He apologises for some wet spots on the floor, but
this is surely unavoidable in an area were hides are unloaded and
prepared for unhairing. The large timber drums are brand-new. In
the drying chamber, the fresh hides hang like bats from the ceiling rafters. Everything is spic and span.
At the end of the production line, a number of samples for quality
testing are laid out. We see leathers in brown, black, blue, red and
every shade in between. The entire production process is certified
according to HACCP and by TÜV Nord. Helena is particularly proud
of the fact that Viviani is one of only 40 manufacturers worldwide that meet the stringent Gore-Tex standard. Viviani has been
a long-standing supplier of HAIX. With Helena and her enthusiasm
on board, Viviani had no problem to adopt the HAIX philosophy of
quality and sustainable production.
The company employs two young post-graduates from Zagreb University, who are in charge of process optimisation. At the end of
the production cycle, the process water is purified in a new treatment plant owned by the company. After treatment, the water is
so clean that it can be used for the irrigation of the tomatoes,
cucumbers and peppers that grow in the greenhouse behind the
tannery. Thanks to the extremely hygienic production process,
hide cut-offs actually meet foodgrade standards and are sold on
for the production of gelatine. “This is a nice little side business
for us,” says Ivan. In the old days, waste from the tannery had to
be disposed of in landfills, which was very costly. Today, the company actually saves even more money thanks to its investment in
solar panels and a geothermal pump. For 2015, Viviani has set
itself new targets to further reduce its energy consumption. Lots
of work and a number of large investments are awaiting the team.
When we meet the Ljubićs later that evening in Zagreb, their working day has not yet come to an end. Over dinner, they are discussing their latest sustainability projects and want to give the
undertaking a name. Over Cevapcici, roast peppers and Djuvec,
“Natural Footprint” starts to gain traction. Whose idea was it?
Probably Helena’s. The slogan reflects perfectly what the company
and the family stand for. We believe that Viviani is a business with
a great and bright future.

zum Schuh: „Absolut geil!“
Matthias Schendel, a stunt man for Brad Pitt and dedicated HAIX fan, tested a special model of the HAIX BLACK
EAGLE Adventure. During a film take for the German TV
station ZDF, the boss of the VIP stunt team broke open
a security van while standing on the bonnet of a moving
car. Given the smoothness of the bonnet and the sudden
vehicle movements, his main task was to keep standing
on his feet. After the successful take, he had only this to
say about the HAIX boot: “Just awesome!”

Mosel Firefighter Challenge
180 Teilnehmer aus acht Ländern
180 participants from eight countries
Die Sportler treten in voller Ausrüstung an. Inklusive Atemschutz und
Gasmaske. 30 bis 35 Kilo Zusatzgewicht. In fünf Stationen simuliert
der Wettkampf einen Feuerwehreinsatz. Ein Schlauch muss auf einen
12 Meter hohen Turm, Geräte nach oben gezogen werden, mit dem
Hammer ein schweres Stahlgewicht eingeschlagen und ein Slalomkurs
zurückgelegt werden. Anschließend wird ein voller Wasserschlauch
geschleppt, ein Ziel abgeschossen und zuletzt ein 80-Kilo-Dummy 30
Meter weit gerettet. Ein Wettkampf nur für harte Firefighter. 2014 findet
er zum ersten Mal an der Mosel statt. Organisator ist Gerd Müller mit
seinem HAIX Team Spangdahlem (6 US Militärangehörige und 2 Zivilbeschäftigte von der gleichnamigen US-Airbase). Über 180 Einzelstarter
gehen an den Start. 43 Doppelstarts und 33 Mannschaften aus USA,
Germany, Schweiz, Canada, Slovenien; Frankreich, Polen, Österreich
haben sich angemeldet.
The competing teams turn up in full gear, including breathing apparatus
and gas mask. Each carries an extra load of 30 to 35 kilos. At five posts
along the circuit, the participants must fight master a simulated fire incident, pulling hoses onto a 12 metre high tower, lifting and winching
equipment, battering steel gates with sledge hammers and completing
a challenging obstacle course. To top it all, they must carry the full water
hose along with them, knock down a target and then rescue a 80 kg
dummy to a safe place 30 metres away from the fire. This challenge is
really only manageable for trained and experienced fire-fighters.
In 2014, the competition will for the first time take place in the Moselle
valley. The organiser of the event is Gerd Müller and his Spangdahlem
HAIX Team (6 US soldiers, 2 civil officers from the Spangdahlem US airbase). This year, there will be 180 participants. To date, 33 teams from
the USA, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Slovenia, France, Poland and
Austria have put their name down to complete in 43 double team starts.

Für den Gerbeprozess verwendet Heinen
biologisch abbaubare Chemikalien. Die Verarbeitung der Bullenhäute unterliegt dabei

Das Ergebnis sind absolut hochwertige Leder
mit Stärken zwischen 1,3 und 3,0 Millimetern. Leder, perfekt für qualitativ hochwertige
Funktionsschuhe.
Wasser, Energie, Chemikalien und Arbeitskraft sind die vier Komponenten der Lederherstellung. Durch deren optimalen Einsatz
lässt sich die Umweltbelastung optimieren
und mit ihr die Hautverträglichkeit des Leders.
Die Ledergerbung ist eine der ältesten Kulturtechniken der Menschheit überhaupt. Es gibt
viele unterschiedliche Gerbverfahren. Einige
sind über die Jahrhunderte hinweg perfektioniert worden.
Quality leather has a name
Zu den weltweit gängigsten Gerbverfahren
gehören die Chromgerbung, die so genannte
Wet White-Gerbung mit synthetischen Gerbstoffen sowie die Vegetabilgerbung mit Hilfe
pflanzlicher Gerbstoffe (z. B. Blätter, Rinden,
Hölzer oder Früchte). Über 80 Prozent der
weltweit gegerbten Leder werden mit Chrom
gegerbt – so auch bei der Lederfabrik Heinen.
Von allen Gerbverfahren hat sich die Chromgerbung in Untersuchungen als die umweltfreundlichste erwiesen.
Wichtig ist die Optimierung der einzelnen Parameter. Bei Heinen Teil der Firmenphilosophie schon lange bevor Umweltdiskussionen
zu diesem Thema auftauchten.
Lederproduktion mit höchsten Standards
Die Lederfabrik Heinen produziert seit
1891 Schuhoberleder am Standort Wegberg. Die vollstufige Lederproduktion von
der rohen deutschen Bullenhaut bis zum
fertigen Oberleder wird weltweit vertrieben.
Die Artikelpalette reicht vom weichen
Nappa-Leder bis zum standigen OutdoorLeder. Umweltschutz wird bei der Firma
Heinen seit Jahrzehnten aktiv praktiziert.
Unter terracare wird die CO2-Belastung
der produzierten Leder pro Artikel und pro
Quadratmeter erfasst. So ermöglicht terracare dem Verbraucher, sich bewusst für
ein ökologisch optimal produziertes Leder
zu entscheiden.
Menschen reagieren auf Stoffe in ihrem täglichen Umfeld. Die einen mehr, die anderen
weniger. Dabei ist in den meisten Fällen der
auslösende Stoff weder außergewöhnlich
noch gefährlich.
Bsp.: Chrom. Chrom ist ein in der Natur vorkommendes Metall, das in dreiwertiger Form
als Salz zum Gerben verwendet wird. Der
menschliche Organismus benötigt Chrom
zum Überleben; wir nehmen es täglich über
die Nahrung auf. Trotz seiner Natürlichkeit
und der Bedeutung des Chroms für den
menschlichen Körper reagieren manche
Menschen bei Hautkontakt allergisch auf
Chrom im Leder.
Die Kunst der Qualität beim Gerben besteht
auch darin, die verwendeten, hochwertigen
Inhaltsstoffe von Premiumherstellern so
exakt zu dosieren und zu verarbeiten, dass
durch die Einbindung im Leder bei Hautkontakt keine Reaktionen mehr entstehen.
In anderen Oxidationsstufen, z.B. in Form des
giftigen Chrom-VI, kommt Chrom bei Heinen
nicht vor. „Das garantieren wir unseren Kunden. Jeden Tag, mit jeder Lieferung, schriftlich“, so Thomas Heinen.

„Ein absolut Bio-, Öko-, organic- oder allergiefreies Leder gibt es nicht“, sagt Thomas
Heinen. Aber es gibt ein ökologisch optimal
produziertes Leder, so der Firmenchef der
Lederfabrik Heinen im Rheinischen Wegberg.
Das Label terracare steht dafür. Heinen
führte es bereits vor Jahren ein und unterstreicht damit die Firmenphilosophie: Bei
Heinen wird Umweltschutz schon seit Jahrzehnten großgeschrieben – und auch die soziale Komponente stimmt.
Höchste Lederqualität
“There is no perfect organic, eco, allergy-free leather
in this world,” says Thomas Heinen. What does exist is
leather produced according to the highest environmental standards. And Heinen, based in Wegberg, is one of
the few tanneries that offer such products.
Heinen adopted the terracare label many years ago
and has never looked back: The protection of the environment and social responsibility have always been at
the heart of the company’s philosophy.

This is what we call leather production of the highest standard
Since 1891 Heinen has been producing
leather for shoe uppers at its factory in
Wegberg. The company sells its leathers
made from German male animals to customers all over the world.
Its product range includes all qualities
from soft Nubuck to thick outdoor leather.
Heinen is committed to protecting the
environment. As part of its terracare certification process, the company records
the CO2 emissions of all its leathers, per
article and per square metre. By choosing terracare, consumers can thus opt for
a leather product that has been produced
according to the most stringent environmental standards.
There are three things that are particularly close to
Thomas Heinen’s heart: Production in Germany. Production with minimum impact on the environment. And
due concern for workers and the wider community.
And Heinen ticks of course all these boxes. It processes
only hides produced in Germany. All chemicals used in
the tanning process are biodegradable. The processing
of hides is subject to the most rigorous controls and
must meet stringent standards as regards environmental and social sustainability. All leathers sold by Heinen
are produced in Germany in safe and controlled processes.
The company offers excellent leather of a thickness of
1.3 to 3 millimetres, which is the ideal material for topquality functional footwear.
The main four components in the production of leather
are water, energy, chemicals and labour. By optimising
the consumables, a tannery can ensure that its products are not irritating to the skin.
Tanning is one of the first technologies developed by
mankind, and there are many different methods to do
this. Over the centuries, tanning has been perfected
and the most commonly used processes are chrome
tanning, wet white tanning with synthetic chemicals
and vegetable tanning with chemicals derived from
plants (e.g. leaves, bark, fruits, etc.). More than 80 per
cent of the leather sold worldwide is chrome-tanned.
This is also the process used by Heinen. Tests have
shown that this tanning method is actually the most environmentally friendly, provided that all parameters are
optimised and continuously controlled. At Heinen, the
protection of the environment has always been a major concern, long before the topic entered mainstream
discussion.
People react to the substances they are in daily contact
with. Some people are more sensitive than others. Allergic reactions however tell us little about the nature
of the substance, which is often a very common and
generally harmless compound. This is also the case
with chromium, a naturally occurring metal whose salt
is used in the form of chromium (III) for the tanning of
leather. Chromium is one of the essential minerals that
our body needs, and we eat it daily with our food. Some
people nevertheless show allergic reactions when chromium in leather comes into contact with their skin.
It is therefore up to the tannery to choose only quality
process chemicals at exactly dosed quantities so that
contact allergies are prevented.

Heinen only uses the harmless chromium (III) and completely avoids the use of poisonous chromium (IV). “This
is our guarantee to our customers. Every consignment
comes with a written certificate,” says Thomas Heinen.

Zum Ende ihres Einsatzes zeigte die Einsatzunterstützungskompanie der deutschen
Kräfte in Kabul erneut ihr soziales Engagement. „Neben unserer Ausbildungstätigkeit
unterstützt meine Kompanie seit mehr als
zwei Jahren die Dorani Mädchen- und Jungenschule sowie den Qasaba Kindergarten
im Norden Kabuls mit Unterrichtsmaterial sowie Spenden für die Verpflegung der Kinder
und Jugendlichen“, so Hauptfeldwebel Christoph Mühlhans. Im Rahmen einer Tombola,
organisiert durch Sachspenden, sammelten
die Ausbilder 5.348 Euro. Ein toller Job der
Soldaten und eine Menge Geld für die Kinder
und Jugendlichen Afghanistans und deren Erziehung und Ausbildung.

care about the people in this war-torn country.
“Apart from training members of the Afghani
government forces, our troops have been supporting the Dorani school for girls and boys
and the Qasaba kindergarten in the north of
the capital city. We provided school materials
and food for the school canteen,” explains
sergeant major Christoph Mühlhans. A raffle
organised by the soldiers raised 5348 Euro.
This is great achievement for the troops and
a lot of money for the education of school children and young people in Afghanistan.

Hi HAIX, I was recently away in the hills. Trying to get a good
shot of the dog pointing on the log but he shifted...but instead I got a good shot of the hunting boots. A stag was less
than 20 meters away hidden behind the usual undergrowth.

Party. Keine Messe weckt mehr Emotionen und mehr Interesse
als die Interschutz. Alle fünf Jahre das Highlight der Branche.
2015 findet die Interschutz in Hannover statt. Und die Highlights
zeichnen sich bereits jetzt ab. Mit Sicherheit auf dem HAIX Stand.
600 Quadratmeter auf zwei Etagen. Damit wird er nochmals 50%
größer. Bis zu 100 freundliche und kompetente Mitarbeiter werden für Live-Acts, Produkt-Highlights, viele Überraschungen und
noch mehr gute Laune sorgen.

Welt.
We still fondly remember the Interschutz trade fair in 2010! One
thousand three hundred and fifty exhibitors from 46 countries
showcased their products and services on an area of 90,000
square metres. Forty thousand visitors joined the party at the
HAIX stand. No trade fair is remembered more fondly by our staff
than the Interschutz. We also received great feedback from customers, who consider the event, which takes place only every five
years, as a highlight of the industry.
In 2015, the Interschutz exhibition will take place in Hanover, and
exhibitors are already busy in designing their stands. HAIX has
booked an area of 600 square metres extending over two floors.

HAIX K2
Letztes Jahr entdeckte ich den HAIX K2. Ein
Schuh, speziell für Bergsteiger und Wanderer. Von HAIX kannte ich bis dahin nur die
hochwertigen Arbeitsschuhe und Schuhe für
Jäger, Feuerwehrmänner und Einsatzkräfte.
Ein Schuhhersteller mit dieser Erfahrung, auf
den Menschen vertrauen, die täglich unter
anspruchsvollsten Bedingungen arbeiten,
kann auch bei Bergstiefeln nicht schlecht
sein, war meine Überlegung. Also entschloss
ich mich den K2 auf meinen Berg- und Weltwanderungen zu testen.
Der erste Eindruck sagt viel über die Qualität
des Produktes aus. Die Schuhe sind bequem.
Geben ein Gefühl von Sicherheit. Obwohl nicht
die Leichtesten, was dem Hersteller gelegentlich angekreidet wird, vermitteln sie ein weit
besseres Gefühl beim Gehen, als viele teurere
Modelle.
Die hochwertigen, antistatischen Sohlen
mit ihrem robusten Gummi-Profil rutschten
auch auf sehr glatten Oberflächen nicht. Auf
Kalkstein besonders wichtig, wenn er mit
Schlamm verschmutzt ist. Die stabile Sohle
und der Schaftaufbau bieten eine exzellente
Stütze. Die Schutzgummierung ist weit über
den Schuhrand gezogen. Ein zusätzlicher
Schutz der Zehen vor spitzkantigen Felsen. Zudem beträgt die Lederstärke 2,6 bis 2,8 mm.
Das HAIX Climate System und die GoreTex Membrane führen Wasserdampf aus
dem Schuh ab. Das System funktioniert. Im
Dschungeltest war ich den ganzen Tag auf
den Beinen. Trotz extrem hoher Luftfeuchtigkeit blieben meine Füße trocken. Außerdem
werden die Schuhe schnell wieder trocken.
Sinnvoller Weise sollte man wie immer hochwertige Strümpfe dazu tragen.
Die Sohle ermöglicht das Anbringen der halbautomatischen Steigeisen und ist deswegen
auch für schwerere alpine Höhenwanderungen, beziehungsweise auf Gletscher oder
für leichtere eisige Aufstiege geeignet.
Mein Eindruck: Der K2 ist ein sehr vielseitiger Schuh, der dem Kriterium als hochwertiger Bergschuh voll und ganz entspricht.

Challenging mountain hikes all over the world
It was only last year that I discovered the HAIX K2, a boot developed for mountaineers and hikers. I knew HAIX as a manufacturer of top-quality safety footwear and boots for hunters, firefighters and other rescue workers.
I then thought that a shoe producer that has the experience and
knowledge to come up with footwear for such very demanding
jobs is probably also able to make good mountaineering boots,
and on that basis, I decided to buy a pair of K2 for my mountaineering trips that bring me to countries all over the world.
First impressions are important, as we all know. My new boots
looked great and were very comfortable from the start. I feel safe
in the K2. Although they are not the most lightweight boots I ever
tried, they give me that extra security when walking. Believe me, I
have worn much more expensive boots that never gave me that
safe feeling.
The K2 has a well-designed, antistatic sole with a lasting rubber
tread that has never let me down on slippery surfaces. This is
important for climbers, as there is often a nasty slime layer on
limestone. The rigid sole and sturdy shaft provide excellent support. The lower edge of the boot is protected by the rubber cover
that extends up across the bottom leather part, protecting the toes
when climbing on sharp rocks. The leather is 2.6 to 2.8 mm thick.
Thanks to the HAIX Climate System and the Gore-Tex membrane,
my feet never feel sweaty. This system really works well, as I saw
during a hike through the jungle. My feet remained dry, despite
the high air humidity. The HAIX K2 dries very quickly. I recommend
wearing the boot with quality socks for extra comfort.
The sole of the HAIX K2 is suitable for the attachment of semiautomatic crampons, making it suitable for difficult alpine hikes,
glacier crossings or easy climbs across ice.
My verdict: The K2 is a very versatile model that meets all requirements for a high-quality mountaineering boot.
