D
ie Fahrt vom Flughafen Málaga zum
Gästehaus Meerlust an der Costa de
la Luz könnte schöner nicht sein. Eine
unendliche Weite in einer pittoresken Land­
schaft, ein Blumenmeer in den sattesten
­Farben und unzählige Windmühlen, welche
die Meeresluft ansaugen. Kaum vorstellbar,
dass es in der «Meerlust» noch besser werden
kann. Doch einmal dort angekommen, wird
deutlich: Gastgeberin Colette Bastin hält, was
sie auf ihrer Homepage verspricht: «Mein Ge­
schmack ist ganz einfach. Ich bin mit dem
Besten immer zufrieden», wird dort Oscar
Wilde zitiert.
Der Natur ganz nah
Im Garten duftet es nach Orangenblüten, die
Zimmer und Betten sind mit Blumen ge­
schmückt – das Gästehaus lebt von Colettes
Liebe zum Detail: Leuchttürme im mediter­
ranen Stil, orientalische Romantik, südafri­
kanische Lodge-Atmosphäre und hawaiiani­
scher Aloha-Spirit lassen verschiedene Welten
aufeinanderprallen: «So haben wir unsere
Lieblingsorte immer präsent», erläutert
Colette. Der Blick auf die nordafrikanische
Küste tut das Übrige. Zu hören ist nichts als
die Stimme von Mutter Natur: zwitschernde
Vögel, quakende Frösche, salzdurchzogener
Wind, der durch den Pinienwald rauscht – in­
mitten der Wildnis lebt man hier von den
wunderbaren Dingen, die einem die Natur je­
den Tag aufs Neue offeriert.
Nach der Morgendusche im Freien gibt es
hausgemachte Orangenmarmelade und fri­
sche, sonnengereifte Früchte. Gerüstet und
angerichtet wird auf Flugzeugtrolleys – eine

Meerlust guest house on the Costa de la
Luz could hardly be more beautiful:
endless expanses of picturesque countryside,
seas of flowers in the lushest of colours, and
countless windmills drawing on the sea breeze.
Hard to imagine, then, that the Meerlust could
be any better. But it is. Because hostess Colette
Bastin delivers entirely on her website promise: “I have but the simplest taste,” she states,
citing Oscar Wilde. “I am always satisfied with
the best.”
So close to nature
The garden smells of orange blossoms, the
rooms and beds are decorated with flowers: the
whole place thrives on Colette’s attention to detail. And with its Mediterranean lighthouses,
its romantic oriental accents, its South African
lodge ambience and its Hawaiian aloha spirit,
the Meerlust is a meeting point of images and
impressions from all over the world. “It’s our
way of staying in touch with all our favourite
­places,” the hostess simply explains. The view
out across to the African coast plays its role, too.
As does the peace: the only voice in these parts
is that of Mother Nature, with her twittering
birds, her croaking frogs and her briny wind
whispering through the pines. It’s a place to live
from all the wonderful things that nature offers
up anew every day.
After a morning shower out in the open air,
there’s home-made marmalade and fresh
­sun-ripened fruit. The food is prepared and
presented on in-flight trolleys – a reminder of
Colette’s 20 years of service as a flight attendant.

Erinnerung an die 20 Jahre in der Luft. Colet­
te versteht es, ihre Gäste zu verwöhnen. Frü­
her war sie als Flugbegleiterin und Produkt­
managerin der First Class für die Swissair
und die SWISS tätig. Gemeinsam mit Sterne­
köchen hat sie damals die Bordmenüs aus­
gearbeitet und die Weine ausgesucht. Heute
tischt sie ihre Lieblingsweine ihren Gästen
im Garten auf. «Die Liebe zum Wein haben
wir vor allem in Südafrika entwickelt. Einer
unserer Lieblinge: ‹Meerlust›. Genau, daher
stammt der Name», grinst sie. «Mein An­
spruch ist, dass der Luxus aus den natürli­
chen, nachhaltigen Gegebenheiten spürbar
wird. Ich möchte meinen Gästen vermitteln,
dass Ruhe, saubere Luft, reines Wasser und
Zeit zum Denken die wahren Luxus­güter
sind.»
Das Meer verbindet
Colette ist in der Schweiz aufgewachsen und
hat Wurzeln in Belgien. Geboren sind sowohl
sie als auch ihr Mann am Meer – Colette auf
Hawaii, Johannes in Hamburg. Ihre Reisen
führten sie vielleicht deshalb immer bevor­
zugt ans Meer. «Der Ozean verbindet uns. Er
spendet Energie, Erholung und Inspiration»,
sind beide überzeugt. Durch Zufall sind sie
1989 auf das Kap Trafalgar gestossen. Bald da­
rauf haben sie das hektargrosse Grundstück
am Meer gekauft und ein kleines Ferienhaus
gebaut, das ihnen jahrelang als Rückzugsort
diente. Die «Meerlust»-Idee entstand erst
später. «Der Traum von einem eigenen Gäste­
haus schlummerte schon lange in mir», so
Colette. 2007 wurde mit dem Bau begonnen.
Heute beherbergt Colette das ganze Jahr über
Paare und Alleinreisende, darunter viele
Stammgäste. «Es war ein äusserst kreatives
Projekt, aus dem überwucherten Grundstück
diese Oase zu schaffen. Wir haben keinen ein­
zigen Baum gefällt, die alten Orangen- und
Olivenbäume wurden bestmöglich in die
Gartengestaltung einbezogen», erklärt sie.
Colette Bastin setzt sich auch aktiv für den
Meeresschutz ein. «Mir war lange nicht be­
wusst, wie schlimm es um die Meere steht.
Mit meiner Website orca-one.org und den
Strandreinigungen, die ich hier regelmässig
organisiere, möchte ich die Menschen für
dieses Thema sensibilisieren.»
Johannes Zink ist Sozialwissenschaftler. Er
arbeitet international als selbständiger Bera­
ter und Coach für Führungskräfte aus Wirt­
schaft und Politik. «Ich geniesse das einfache
Leben in Andalusien – die Menschen hier ak­
zeptieren dich, wie du bist, und sind sehr
hilfsbereit.» Öfter kommen seine Kunden für
ein Einzelcoaching in die «Meerlust». «So
können sie Arbeit mit Urlaub verbinden. Hier
Zwischen Pinien und Lavendel geniesst man aus

guests: Colette previously worked as a cabin
crew member and First Class Product Man­ager
for Swissair and for SWISS. And she’d get to­
gether regularly with top chefs to devise the inflight meals and choose the wines on board.
­Today she serves her guests her own favourite
wines in the guest house garden. “It was in South
Africa that I really developed my interest in
wine,” she explains. “One of our favourites there
was called ‘Meerlust’, and that’s what inspired
our house’s name. My aim in all this,” she continues, “is to get our guests to feel the luxury of
the natural and the sustainable: to show them
how peace and quiet, clean air, fresh water and
the time to think are life’s real luxury items.”

Colette grew up in Switzerland, but also has
roots in Belgium. Both she and her husband
were born by the sea: Colette on Hawaii and
­Johannes in Hamburg. So perhaps that’s why
their travels have tended to lead them back to
it. “The sea’s something we share,” they concur.
“And it’s a great source of energy, recovery and
inspiration.” It was by chance that they came to
Cape Trafalgar back in 1989. But it wasn’t long
before they’d bought their one-hectare plot by
the sea and built a small holiday home on it,
which was to serve as a welcome retreat for several years. The Meerlust idea only came later.
“I’d had this dream of running my own guest
house for quite some time,” Colette recalls.
They started building it in 2007. And today
­Col­ette spends the whole year hosting couples
and single travellers, many of whom have become regular guests. “It’s been a hugely cre­
ative project turning an overgrown piece of
land into the oasis you see today,” she explains.
“We didn’t fell a single tree, either: we just integrated the old orange and olive trees as well
as we could into the garden’s design.”
Colette Bastin is an active protector of the
seas and oceans, too. “I didn’t realise for quite
a long time just how serious the problem is,” she
concedes. “So now I’m trying to sensitise people to the issues, through my orca-one.org
­website, and through the beach clean-ups that
I regularly organise here.”
Colette’s husband Johannes is a social scientist who works as a freelance coach and consultant to executives and politicians in various
countries. “I love the simplicity of life here in
Andalusia,” he says. “The people are really
helpful, and they just accept you the way you
are.” Many of Johannes’s clients also come to the
Meerlust for their individual coaching. “It’s a
good way of combining work and vacation,” he
explains. “And it’s also far easier in an environment like this to truly open up and be receptive
to new thoughts and ideas.”

zu öffnen und neue Gedanken zuzulassen.»
Der Erfüllung ganz nah
Ob Lust auf Meer oder Lust auf mehr: An der
Costa de la Luz gibt es viel zu entdecken. Die
älteste Stadt Europas, Cádiz, liegt nur eine
Stunde entfernt. Auch Jerez mit ihren SherryBodegas, die an einer Bucht gelegene römi­
sche Stadt Bolonia, Sevilla oder Tarifa, der
südlichste Punkt Festlandeuropas und nur
14 Kilometer vom afrikanischen Kontinent
­entfernt, sind einen Besuch wert. «Die Costa
de la Luz ist auch ein guter Ort für Aktivferi­
en. Ob Surfen, Yoga, Golfen, Fahrradtouren,
­Spanischunterricht, Reiten, Tango-, Kochoder Fotokurse – hier gibt es für alle e­ twas
­Passendes.» Wer das Gegenteil sucht, relaxt
in den Hängematten inmitten von Klatsch­
mohn und Lavendel oder geht am Strand spa­
zieren und baden. Der Schlaf in der «Meer­
lust» ist übrigens unbezahlbar. Nach einer
Nacht fühlt man sich entspannt, nach zwei
Nächten erholt, nach dreien erfüllt. Die zwei
grosszügigen Doppelzimmer und die Suite
mit wunderbarem Blick auf den Atlantik und
den Leuchtturm auf Kap Trafalgar sind mit
allem ausgestattet, was man braucht, vom
­eigenen Bad über die Nespresso-Maschine bis
hin zur Auswahl an köstlichen Weinen.
Vermissen tut Colette hier nichts: «Ich bin
schon immer an verschiedenen Orten zu
Hause gewesen. Manchmal fehlt mir der
Schweizer Käse oder der speziell gute Wein
aus meinem Heimatdorf Hallau», lacht sie.
«Doch das ist das Schöne daran, nirgends
wirklich und gleichzeitig überall zu Hause
zu sein: Wenn man jemanden oder etwas
­vermisst, nimmt man sich die Zeit zum Ver­
reisen» – sei es nach Hawaii, Südafrika, der
Wahlheimat von Johannes, oder an ihren
Schweizer Wohnsitz. Ihre Stellvertretung
übernehmen ehemalige Kolleginnen aus der
Fliegerei, die gerne für Colette einspringen
und sich in der «Meerlust» zu Hause fühlen.
Ja, zu Hause fühlt man sich hier schnell.
Oder wie es ein weitgereister Gast ausdrückte:
«Ich habe viele Jahre nach einem solchen Ort
in Europa gesucht – nun habe ich ihn endlich
gefunden.»

A priceless experience
A stay at the Meerlust is simply a priceless experience. One night and you’ll be relaxed, two
and you’ll be recovered, three and you won’t
want to leave. The two spacious double rooms
and the suite with its fabulous view of the Atlantic and the lighthouse at Cape Trafalgar are
all equipped with every conceivable need, from
their own bathrooms to Nespresso machines
and a selection of fine wines.
For anyone seeking genuine R&R – dozing in
a hammock among the poppies and the lavender, or strolling along the beach and bathing
in the waters – the Costa de la Luz is an idyllic
place to vacation. But it’s also a great venue for
more active vacationing: surfing, yoga, golf,
cyc­ling, learning Spanish, riding, tango, cooking and photography are all on the agenda. The
Costa has a host of sights to discover, too. Cadiz,
the oldest city in Europe, is just an hour away.
And Jerez, with its sherry bodegas, the Roman
town of Bolonia with its delightful bay, the city
of Seville and Tarifa, the southernmost point on
mainland Europe (and only 14 kilometres from
North Africa) are all worth a visit.
So is there anything Colette misses? “No,”
she replies. “I’ve made my home in many ­places
over the years. Sometimes I get a slight craving
for Swiss cheese or a glass of wine from Hallau,
which is my home Swiss village. But that’s the
great thing about being at home nowhere and
everywhere: if you really miss someone or
something, you can just go!” – to Hawaii, South
Africa (Johannes’s adopted home) or her own
Swiss roots.
When she does, Colette has a number of former colleagues from her flying days who are all
too happy to hold the Meerlust fort while she’s
away. They quickly feel at home there, too: it’s
just that kind of place. Or, as one well-travelled
guest put it: “I have been looking for such a
place in Europe for many years – now I have
­finally found it.”
