St. Patrick’s Day is also my birthday. To celebrate the
event, Dayna and I decided that after church Sunday we
would go have pizza and then go to the theater to see Son
of God.
After church I asked her if we could skip the pizza, go
home and rest, and then go to the matinee. A few minutes
after we got home she came upstairs and said, “It is so
cold and rainy, do you really want to go to a three hour
show or had you rather rest some more and just wait until
it comes out on a DVD?”
You can guess my decision . . . but my decision was
certainly not based on the aging process!
—CC—
I received a birthday card from a friend which had the
following verse:
During the first third of life,
everyone told you what to do.
During the second third of your life,
you told everyone else what to do.
During the last third of your life,
everyone’s telling you what to do again.
The good thing is you can’t hear ‘em,
so you don’t care.
—CC—
When I think of birthdays, I always think of my Mother’s
80th birthday. At the party, she said, “I am 80 years old
and don’t have an enemy.”
I jokingly added, “You mean you have made amends
with all of them?”
“No,” she replied. “I have outlived all of them.”
—CC—
As another year has rolled around in my life, I want to
share one of my favorite quotes:
“The trouble with being old enough to have some
answers is that no one is asking you any questions.”

The Year Was 1945
SECURE,
MAINTAIN
PEACE OR BE READY TO
FIGHT HERE—Says James
Rodgers, Jr.
City Sergeant Warns Against
Acceptance Of War Propaganda
“The war of tomorrow will
come to our own back yard,” if
we fail to secure and maintain
the peace American boys and
allied forces have given their
lives to defend.
The opinion is that of T/Sgt.
James W. Rodgers, Jr., Liberator bomber crewman who was
shot down over Austria May
24, 1944, and remained a prisoner of the Germans until May
1, 1945, when he was freed by
Red army troops.
Maintenance of the peace,
Sgt. Rodgers is convinced,
hinges on two factors: a constant state of preparedness by
the United States, and full cooperation with Russia.
Utter desolation of German
cities by allied air power and artillery fire, with its accompanying shattering of civilian morale
is not a comforting sight, the
city soldier recalls.
“If the American people could
have seen Germany before the
capitulation, they would realize
the horrors of war and forever
try to avoid a similar experience
in this country.
“America had better prepare
today for its peace tomorrow,”
Sgt. Rodgers declared. “We
must not be the victim tomorrow as we were in 1941, nor
must we be swayed by propaganda that would send us into
conflict.”
Sgt. Rodgers’ respect for the
Russian soldier is of the highest.
As a people, they have a great
respect for Americans and,
granting that Russia will dominate the Eurasian continent for
years to come, the city soldier is
convinced Soviet and American
paths to peace are parallel.
The city Airman’s regard for
forces of the Soviet blossomed
the night of May 1, 1945, when
Red troops entered the city of
Barth, Germany, freeing prisoners at Stalag Luft 1 and joining
captured allied fliers in a celebration that lasted all night.
“We were listening to the
radio about 10 p.m. that night.
The program was the Hit Parade broadcast by the BBC and
we had just heard a bulletin
that Hitler was dead, when we
got the news the Russians were
there,” Sgt. Rodgers recounted.
“The first Russians I saw
were two men in a patrol car.
Later, the next day, they moved
in in force. Boys from the camp
started to snake dance and the
place was in an uproar.
The Hit Parade was still coming over the airwaves when the
sergeant and his mates returned
to their barracks and appropriately enough, the No. 1 tune
that night was “Don’t Fence Me
In.”
Col. Hubert Zemke and Lt.
Col. Francis Gabreski, American air aces, contacted authorities and American fliers were
flown from Barth to France in
B-17s, Sgt. Rodgers and his
group landed at Rheims, May
14, 10 days short of a year from
the time he was shot down.
The sergeant’s last mission,
how five members of the crew
were killed, a broken leg he received in the melee and his flight
to reach the escape hatch of his
plane, are experiences clearly
imprinted in his memory.
Flying in formation with 30
other B-24s, his plane was on
its ninth mission from its Italian
base to the Messerschmitt factory at Weiner Neustadt, Austria, about 30 minutes from its
target—scheduled to be bombed
at 11 a.m.—when the formation
was jumped by about 125jfighters from the “Abbeville Kids”
or Herman Goering’s “Yellow
Nose” outfit. Goering’s veterans
were known by both names.
Flying in the lower left part of
the formation, Sgt. Rodgers saw
the Nos. 1 and 4 planes knocked
out and his ship, No. 7 fell back
when enemy fire crippled the
bomber. One of the four motors
had gone out five minutes before
the formation was jumped.
A burst from a German 20 millimeter shell tore the nose from
the bomber, killing the co-pilot,
navigator, bombardier and nose
gunner and shortly thereafter 10
to 14 enemy planes converged
on the crippled plane from the
rear.
The few seconds from the
time the ship went into a dive
until he jumped moved slowly
for Sgt. Rodgers. Pressure from
the dive pinned him to the floor,
preventing him from crawling to
the escape hatch.
But an atmospheric upheaval
did the trick: the air pocket lifted the plane, raising the sergeant
from the floor and permitting
him to reach the opening, where
he caught his broken right leg in
a cable just before the slipstream
pulled him from the hatch.
“I thought for awhile I was
going to leave my leg in the
plane, but I knew I had to jump
and soon,” the sergeant recalled.
Fortunately, he freed his leg from
the cable and soon was floating
to earth amid a stillness startling
by contrast to the battle going on
overhead.
Captured 30 minutes after he
landed—he had dropped in a
pine tree and was hardly jarred—
Sgt. Rodgers was carried down
the mountainside, the Austrian
Alps, by six or seven Austrian
youths, who patted his back and
smiled at him when his two German captors were not looking.
At that time, the area around
St. Polten, Austria, had not been
bombed by the allies and the natives were friendly. Later, while
hospitalized at Stalag 17-B near
Krems, west of Vienna on the
Danube, the city airman saw
the beginning of heavy bombing of the area by Yank and RAF
bombers, and friendliness of the
people grow to hatred.
Daylight and night bombings
stepped up to a schedule of four
or five days a week when the
sergeant and an AAF lieutenant
were sent from the hospital to St.
Polten, under guard.
Halted near the outskirts of St.
Polten by a Yank raid, the prisoners and guards took shelter with
residents of the city and here the
Americans saw their first hatred
of the Yanks exhibited.
Women and children
screamed and cried as bombs
aimed at a nearby airfield came
close. Smiles that greeted the
Americans when they entered
the shelter turned to looks of revulsion and hate. Threats were
muttered: “It was nice to know
the two guards were standing
by,” Rodgers said.
Sgt. Rodgers was next sent
from St. Polsen to the interrogation camp at Frankfurt, where
he was questioned, then told by
Luftwaffe Intelligence officers
that they held a complete file on
him: when he entered the service, where he trained, when he
shipped overseas and where his
unit, the 15th AAF, had served
and bombed.
In one instance, another prisoner was told about his friendship with a boy in Florida and
incidents of his personal life before he entered the service.
From Frankfurt, Sgt. Rodgers
was sent to Kiefhelde in Pomerania, where he stayed with 10,000
other allied airmen, largely
American, from July 1944, until
February 1945, when they were
moved to Barth as the Russians
moved west.
Enroute to Barth by box car—
it took eight days to cover the 90
miles—German guards discovered only 52 Americans in the
car, which originally contained
53 prisoners.
Sgt. Rodgers and his mates
were threatened with death if 53
men were not in the car when it
reached Barth and the 53rd man
could not be found. At Barth
it was discovered the man who
counted the prisoner list erred,
only 52 men were in the car
originally.
Facilities at Barth were the
best of any camp in which the
cityan was confined. Even
showers were available. But the
food pinch was on and Red Cross
packages, parcels that saved
many lives, were not issued for
seven weeks.
During his period of captivity, the city sergeant dropped in
weight from 145 pounds to 115,
but has regained the loss since he
returned to American hands May
13.
He will report to Miami Beach,
Fl, September 7, following a 60day furlough, to await reassignment or discharge. As he figures
it, Sgt. Rodgers has 86 points
and he has been assured former
prisoners are being discharged.
Irrespective of the future,
however, the sergeant, son of Mr.
and Mrs. James W. Rodgers, Sr.,
city, is going to join with forces
who will demand that the United
States by ready to defend itself at
all times.
“To have peace,” he maintains,
“other nations must know we
are ready for war and powerful
enough to defend ourselves.”

THE LOCAL RED HATTERS ENJOYED A TRIP TO MARIO’S MEXICAN RESTAURANT RECENTLY. Pictured are (l to right) Margie Mairel, Shirley Harkey, Sharon
Dilday, Lynn Marquis, Joyce Yates, Phyllis Brantley, Geraldine Ingram, Rusty Jones, and Naomi Tomlinson.
Weather Doesn’t Stop Red Hatters!
Neither wind, rain nor
cold could keep nine Red
Hat Ladies from getting
together to celebrate Saint
Patrick’s Day. But the threat
of snow did keep them from
going shopping in Shawnee. So dressed with their
Red Hats and purple attire,
they invaded Mario’s here
in Holdenville. Joyce Yates and Lynn
Marquis were hostess. Lynn decorated the table
with green streamers and
a large green shamrock
was given to each lady. A word game using the
words Saint Patrick was
won by Naomi Tomlinson with 52 words, but
after all, she is a retired
English teacher and author. She won a green
and white cup wrapped
in a green dish towel. Now isn’t that cleaver! A
green bottle full of peas
was passed around asking
you to guess how many
peas was in the bottle. Phyllis Brantley won that
game with a guess of 545. Now who would have
thought that there would
be 589 peas in there. She
won a pair of Red Hat
earrings made by Belinda
Reid. They were awesome! One of the green
shamrocks had an X on
the bottom of it and that
belonged to Sharon Dilday. She was the lucky
winner of a decoupaged
pot full of ivy. It even had
a rooster on it and guess
what Sharon’s kitchen is
decorated in? How lucky
can a girl get!
Naomi blessed our food
thanking God for everything that we had in life
and for the great friendships that we have with
each other. Our food was
served and delicious as it
was, some of us just had
to have their strawberry
sopapillas. Yum! Yum!
Present were Rusty
Jones, Geraldine Ingram,
Sharon Dilday, Shirley
Harkey, Naomi Tomlinson, Margie Mairel,
Phyllis Brantley, Joyce
Yates and Lynn Marquis.
Shirley Harkey and Sharon Dilday are the hostess for next month and
I can’t wait to see what
they have in store for us!

Game Night News
Six determined “Moon”
players came out to play tonight. I guess the others
were off for “spring break.” Anyhoo, they don’t know the
fun they missed! Four ladies
played, one kept scores and
one did the cheering for both
sides! That wasn’t easy to do. And of course, when you lose,
then you switch and those two
take your place. So, we did
get a little exercise in besides
all the laughter.
Glenda Smith was back
and ready to go! She and Sue
Wood won 2 games. Geraldine Ingram and Sharon Dilday won 2 games. Norma
Summy and Lynn Marquis
won 4 games. Norma bid 4 on
“Follow Me” and she only had
3 doubles. But she put out a
domonio and hoped that Lynn
had the double which she not
only had that double but she
had two more to go with it and
they made all seven! It was
that kind of a night. And as
Sue always says, “That’s what
partners are for”. And is she
ever right! Right!
We didn’t have any snacks
to keep our “mo-jo” going but
we had a good time anyway!
Come and join us! You will
have a good time, I promise!!
See ya then,
Nazarene Church
to Host Gasteneaus
There is a stir in the gospel music air these days in
Oklahoma over a talented
family band from Ada, Oklahoma, THE GASTINEAUS..
Established in 2001, The
Gastineaus embraced the call to
share the gospel of hope wherever God would lead. This musical family consists of James
& Gaye Gastineau and their
daughters, Kami and Maci.
The Gastineaus’ passion
and calling are evident from
the moment the first note is
sung. In conduct, appearance, and sound, you will
appreciate the professionalism and anointing this family band brings to the stage.
Gaye, having previously
traveled 20 years with The
Celestials, brings a wealth of
experience and depth to her
family group. Gaye is a gifted
songwriter, singer and accomplished pianist. Her vocals are
soulful and her years of experience reveal itself as she
anchors the band. A talented
vocalist, Kami’s sound is pure
and her style refreshing. Her
smooth bass guitar playing
sets a nice foundation for live
southern gospel music. Kami
is a senior in college, majoring in elementary education.
Maci, 13 yrs old, brings an
abundance of youthful energy
to the group. She plays several
instruments but you will hear
her on the drums and guitar
at a Gastineau concert. With
a quick smile and personality to spare, Maci is a favorite
among fans. James, a 19-year
veteran in law enforcement,
is dedicated and committed
to the success of his family’s
calling. With a servant’s heart,
his love and support is evident
as he drives the van, maintains
equipment, and sets the sound.
After many wonderful
years in the Church of God,
The Gastineaus recently became members of Blue Baptist Church. Gaye teaches the
Youth Choir; she and Maci
are active in the church’s
praise & worship band when
the family is not on the road.
Kami is a member of Abba’s
House Worship Center. The
Gastineaus are part Mississippi Choctaw Indian.
With the combined talents
of singing, songwriting and instrumentation, The Gastineaus
are poised to make their mark
on the hearts of southern gospel fans. With a heart for ministry, The Gastineaus raise the
standard, for one cause, for
one passion, for one Savior.
Please join us at the Holdenville Church of the Nazarene
on Sunday morning, March
23, 2014 at 10:45 a.m. to be
ministered to by this wonderful family. The church is located at 323 S. Oak.

Hi Bill and Dayna,
Received my Tribune,
what a nice surprise to see
the pictures of so many

are many fond memories
in that group. I am so glad
they came out to Yeager
that day.
My
hobby
is
restoring vintage
guitars. The one picture
with Mr. Self and me
holding the guitar - I was
explaining how the previous
owner had set his favorite
guitar down behind his car,
forgot about it and backed
over it, crushing it beyond
repair. He put it on e-bay
and described it as a parts
project for his beloved
guitar. I made him an offer
to save the Gibson Dove, he
agreed and asked me, do
you want the crushed case
too. I told him yes. All of
the guitar was inside the
case, all I had to do was
glue it back together and use
the pieces for the pattern to
duplicate each part.
The only thing that is
original on the guitar is the
neck , pick guard and tuners.

the bomb that exploded

the bomb is all inside the

them back together and I
will have the bomb. I was

Between Mr. Self at

about wood working and

In 1966, a little over six
years after graduating from
Holdenville, I built my first

the trades in building it. I
drew the plans taking the

models I was working on
in Camarillo, CA. I had
to climb up on top of a
mountain and look down to
see how the roof lines lay to
draw the roof plan. I finished
the house in about July of
1966 and not long after that
Better Homes and Gardens
ran a survey of housewives
to design the most functional

small budget and worry
and I had just finished the

The “Old Geezers” met in
Ada recently and our good
friend Mike Agan share their
news with us. They always
have a great time.
“Finally, another Old
Geezer’s luncheon in Ada!
A well attended event for
the Holdenville Alums and
some great BBQ, and a new
waitress, too. As “March
Madness” is just around
the corner and some serious
high school playoff games,
there was good discussion
of old time basketball.
Coach Jack Hobbs’ name
came up, and even though
all agreed he was a good
coach, he was just out of
the Henry Iba school of
hoops and he made us pass
the ball 10 times before we
shot! (It worked fine until
we were behind.) Those
in attendance were: Roger
Sweeney, Guy Pryor, Vic
Pryor (thanks for the prayer
Vic & Jim!), Wayne Martin,
John Bill Martin, Don Page,
Bill Horne, Jim Brewer,
Maxey Carter, George
Kernek, B. R. Gordon,
Vernon Robinson, and your
pedaling, (even though I’’m

See ya in April!”

Mike also told me that he
and his wife, Carolyn and
daughter, Cami are taking a
trip to France. They will be
touring the museums and are
looking forward to a great
time together. Please keep
Carolyn in your prayers as
she has been diagnosed with

Dear Bill & Dayna,
I am sending my renewal
for another year. Hope you
two are doing well—so
appreciate the news from
Holdenville.
The Tulsa

today. Our beloved uncle

Our good friend Barbara
Walker was by the office
recently. She is looking
for the address of Bobby
Dale Lee who would have
graduated in 1948 from
Holdenville. He also played
in the famous Bob Bennett
band that used to entertain at
the HHS Alumni reunions.
Bobby was also a member
of the 45th Division Infantry
that Barbara hosts the
reunion every year for. She
is trying to reach him to let
him know about the event.
If you have any information
regarding his whereabouts,
please call and let us know.
—DD—
I ran into my cousin
Marlene
Leewright
Crittenden and her mother
Irene House recently. Irene
said she had taken a fall the
week before and was very
sore. Marlene asked me if
I was going to wear a tutu
to the Leewright family
reunion this year and I think
I just gave her a blank stare.
When I got a hold of myself I
said, “I don’t think so, why?”
She said that my sister Darla
and my cousin Carla were
discussing the possibility on
Facebook recently. I missed
that conversation and I’m
thankful! We shall see what
happened in October at the
Leewright family reunion.
I’ll let you know what
transpires and if this really
happens you can be sure that
I will have a picture or two!
—DD—
I also got to see my
cousin Karen Leewright
Grizzle a couple of weeks
ago. She came by to visit
me here at the shop and I
was so glad to see her. She
moved to Texas to be near
her granddaughter Samantha
and she is enjoying getting
to spend time with her. We
sure do miss her around here
and hope she stops by every
time she is in town.
—DD—
I want to thank Yvonne
Huser for inviting me into
her lovely home to take a
picture of the Garden Club
ladies at their monthly
meeting. Yvonne had her
table set so beautifully
with an assortment of
lovely China cups, saucers
and dishes. She served
delicious sponge cakes in
assorted flavors and cups of
fruit with whipped cream.
I actually sat down and
enjoyed a few minutes of
relaxation and visiting with
some very special ladies.
We did a lot of reminiscing
about the old Foster Drug
store. They asked me to join
the group and I am hoping
that some day I will be able
to. Those attending were
hostess Yvonne Huser, Fleta
Coppedge, Helen Lindsey,
Naomi Tomlinson, Wynema
Morrow, Martha Lucas, and
Mary Kelley.

CHAPTER IX
We Move Again
I don’t even remember
the address of the house
we were living in by the
park and near Capitol Hill.
It was about 2 or 3 blocks
south of Southeast 29th
Street not far from South
Robinson Street. One night
Mr. & Mrs. Blaylock (the
nice neighbors that we use
to live by on Southeast 38th
Street) came to our house.
They said they were going
to move and wanted to know
if we would like to rent their
house at 1009 Southeast
38th Street. Of course we
wanted their house. It was
a larger house with a large
living room, a large dining
room and kitchen combined
and one large bedroom. It
would be the largest house
that we had lived in up to
that time. It had inside water
with a sink but no inside
bathroom. The toilet was
outside.
In just a few days we had
moved to our new address.
The house had a large front
yard and a large lot behind
the house. The dates are
getting a little fuzzy to me
now but I think it was the
latter part of 1949 that we
moved into that house. The
next year I had a man with
a team of horses or mules
come and plow the large
lot in back and I made a big
garden the first year I was

of 1950 that I was able to
purchase a car. I bought a
car from my brother, James
Renfro (half brother). The
car was a Chevrolet sedan
either a 1942 or 1943 model.
I payed my brother a little
and took over the payments
on the car. I was still
working at the bus station
and going to school part
time at night at Oklahoma
City University. One day
I decided that I would go
back to Tinker Air Force
Base and apply for a job
there again. I did get a job
there and this time I got
a job that I could handle
better. I worked with a crew
where we would chromate
the large gasoline tankers
that are pulled behind a
truck to deliver gasoline
to the stations. We would
fill the large tankers with
caustic soda and let it stay
for a while and then drain
the tanker. Then we would
fill the large tanker with
chromate, drain it, and
when it dried it would leave
a coating inside the tanker.
Sometimes I would actually
have to go inside these
tankers through a little hole
on top of the tanker. One
day I became dizzy in one
of those tankers that hadn’t
been chromated and had to
go to the dispensary and see
a doctor on the base. He
told me to spend just a few
minutes at a time inside
one of these tankers. Part
of the time while I was on
this job I drove the vehicle
transporting our crew
back and forth to the main
building.
So I am back on the job at
Tinker and things are going
better. We always had to
struggle with our finances
but things were better now
than they had been. I was
eventually put on a swing
shift at Tinker working
through the evening hours
until around midnight. It
was during this time that
Bob Wills and his Texas
Playboys band moved back
to Oklahoma City. If you
have ever heard the song
“San Antonio Rose” then
you should know that the
Bob Wills Band was the
author of that song. The
band would broadcast from
Radio Station KBYE from
12:00 noon to 12:30 and
then be off for 30 minutes
and would come back and
broadcast again from 1:00
p.m. to 1:30. The program
was held at a large ballroom
and people could go watch
the broadcast free of charge.
We went there several times
since this band was very
popular at that time.
I might say here that
despite our finances my
Flonnie always found the
money to dress our little
girls in beautiful clothes.
She took the best of care
of our kids always keeping
their hair looking so pretty.
In the next chapter I will
write about a little Willys
automobile that I traded for
and a trip we took in that
car.
Since
I
now
had some college
credit hours on my record
I took a Civil Service test
for an office job and passed
the test and was put on a
register. In 1952 my college
hours paid off as I would
go for an interview at the
Veterans
Administration
Hospital in Oklahoma City
but that will be in another
chapter.
