EPFA deliver new coaching course to Finnish coaches
In February EPFA staff travelled to Finland to deliver the new and improved EPFA Coaching Powerchair Football course. Before the course
began EPFA staff met with Erik Lundell, head of the Finnish powerchair football association and Lasse Keski-Loppi, Grassroots Development
Manager for the Finnish Football Association.
Together, positive discussions were held on how to grow powerchair football in Finland and how the Finnish Football Association the Finnish
powerchair association can work together successfully. We look forward to working with both associations in the future and believe this will be
the start of a very positive and productive relationship
The following day the EPFA Coaching Powerchair Football course began. Following weeks of planning and structuring the new course, it was
delivered to 8 coaches from Finland and 2 coaches from Austria.
The morning theory sections included equipment, types of disability within powerchair football, the pitch, classification and what EPFA do.
Practical session 1 followed, covering the basic and essential skills including chair control and dribbling.
In the afternoon coaches were back in the classroom to talk about formations, tactics and how players learn before heading back into the
second practical session, covering further skills of striking the ball – both stationary and moving – as well as tackling. To finish day 1 coaches
were split into smaller groups and challenged to develop a 15 minute session on a chosen topic, with the intention of coaching their session to
the players in the morning.
Day 2 was a practical filled day, starting with coaches learning more about speed testing and delivering their session plan from the night
before. Each session was well delivered and covered their chosen topic well. EPFA tutors then discussed and demonstrated a variety of set
pieces with the players, provoking much discussion amongst the coaches.
The coaches were then challenged to deliver a set piece using the players after the lunch time break, using the lunch time period to plan the
set piece given to them.

The afternoon consisted of small sided games for the players, much to their delight! EPFA tutors provided a variety of game challenges for the
coaches to present to their players, with the aim of guessing which challenge the team were given. These included; always one player in the
opponents half, only spin passing at set pieces and 10 seconds to take a set piece. Coaches then coached during the game, trying to use their
new knowledge and skills.
A wonderful course concluded with team photos and good wishes given to everyone. The EPFA tutors were delighted with the enthusiasm and
effort from the coaches and the players. EPFA believe Finland have some promising coaches and look forward to seeing how they develop and
improve in the future! Things look very bright for powerchair football in Finland!
Erik Lundell said, “This has been a great weekend, the knowledge from the EPFA tutors will help our players to improve in Finland. This course
will help the new coaches at Tampere as well as us and we hope to have more players in Finland very soon!”

Update from around Europe
Austria – Ottobock National Cup 2015
This seasons Ottobock Cup represented Austria’s first ever National Powerchair Football Championship. Three teams from the capital city
Vienna and a team from Linz alongside with a guest team from Dresden, Germany participated in the event.
The Tournament format was round robin with a total of 2x12 minutes playing time. The Head referee of the European Powerchair Football
Association (EPFA) Martin Bevan and Steven Crump, both from England, held a referee course. The 5 attendees then conducted the refereeing
during the event.
The two Viennese teams with most of the players who had already participated in last year’s tournament, dominated the competition as both
teams marched undefeated to the final game against each other. In a heartbreaking finish ASKÖ 2 snatched away the Championship with a last
second goal, after conceding what would have been the game winning goal only 2 minutes earlier. Dresden came up third, while the
newcomer teams Vienna 3 and Linz finished fourth and fifth.
A total of 29 athletes participated in the event. The Cup took place at the VIVA Sports Center in Steinbrunn on Saturday, November 14th 2015.
Powerchair Football is the fastest growing sport in the country with new teams from further 3 cities having already signed up for next year’s
competition.

Crystal Palace players face their powerchair team
Premier League footballers from Crystal Palace FC visited their powerchair team
and played a game against their powerchair counterparts. Welsh international Joe
Ledley, goalkeeper Julian Speroni, Jason Puncheon and Zeki Friars took part in a
session to celebrate the team’s development and entry into their local league.
Speroni has his own charity, some of his funds purchased two of the team’s
powerchairs for this season! Sky Sports News also came along to the session to film
the players in action. Despite a great effort against the powerchair players the
professionals lost 3-0!

Finland
Referees course develops promising officials
In November, EPFA Head of referees Martin Bevan visited Finland to deliver a referees course and officiate in their first ever national league
game. Taking place in Helsinki, 4 running game officials selected by the Finnish FA took part to build on their existing refereeing knowledge and
learn about the rules differences in powerchair football. Coaches from FC Inter and HJK Helsinki also attended to gain a greater understanding
of the rules of powerchair football.
During the second day the new officials refereed 10 minute training matches
in order to gain practical experience. The officials progressed very quickly
and soon had a good understanding of the 2 on 1 law and how to interpret it
to ensure that the games flows. The new officials also learnt a great deal
from watching Martin referee the league game. Another positive move for
powerchair football is the appointment of a head referee. Mika Wahlsten is
the new head referee for Finnish powerchair football and is already a high
level running game referee and tutor. We look forward to working with
Mika in the future and welcoming him and his colleague to powerchair
football!

FC Inter win inaugural Finnish championship
The first ever Finnish championship took place this season, featuring their two teams; FC Inter and HJL Helsinki. Competing over a four game
championship the title was taken by FC Inter, after the final game of the season finished in a 2-2 draw. FC Inter won the series by two games to
one in a very tightly contested league.
Next season will bring a new challenge, with a new team based in the city of Tampere, with FC Inter having to defend their title against two
teams as powerchair football grows in Finland.

Ireland
Midlands United and DCU Storm are dominating powerchair football in Ireland, separated only by goal difference. The premiership title will be
decided when they meet each other in April, DCU will need to claw back the goal difference and beat united in order to retain their crown.
Ireland also welcomed a new team to competition recently, Cork based
Heroes Power Soccer team took part in the championship after just a few
months of training. Credit must be given to the AIPF for supporting the
development of a new team and best of luck to the Heroes in their
powerchair football journey!
