Film Catalogue
Introduction
The 67th Festival de Cannes includes a large selection of UK Film in its
2014 edition.
This Catalogue includes details of all the UK productions and official
co-productions screening in the Festival. It is divided into the Festival’s
various sections: Main Competition (including features and shorts); Un
Certain Regard; Directors’ Fortnight; Critics’ Week; and Cinéfondation.
The key UK Film organisations are represented in Cannes under the single
umbrella of WE ARE UK FILM, a grouping of UK film national and regional
agencies. Together we provide clear information about our outstanding
locations, services, films and talent, and we represent the UK Film industry
enabling connections with both national and international partners.
In partnership with WE ARE UK FILM, this Catalogue is a resource complied
by British Council Film, which acts as a link between UK films and
filmmakers and new international audiences. British Council Film works with
a range of programme selector teams from the world’s premiere
international film festivals, including the teams from Cannes Official
Selection, Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week to arrange preview
screenings in London of the best new British films. We also collate an online
database of UK films as they go into pre-production, as well as an
exhaustive British Films Directory listing all UK shorts and features
produced since 1998. In order to aid research we also choose a selection of
films to represent the range of UK filmmaking from the Directory each year
to form a UK Film Catalogue and we compile occasional additional
Catalogues (like this one) detailing the UK films which have been selected
to appear in premier international Film Festivals. Each catalogue is
compiled as a printable PDF and is intended as a reference tool particularly
to assist Festival programmers, film buyers and sales agents, as well as
other filmmakers, students, statisticians and film historians.
You can view the entire British Films Directory, as well as further directories
listing both Filmmakers and Festivals, at

Jimmy's Hall
Mr. Turner
Synopsis
In 1921, Jimmy Gralton's sin was to build a dance hall on a rural
crossroads in Ireland, where young people could come to learn, to argue,
to dream... but above all to dance and have fun. Jimmy's Hall celebrates
the spirit of these free-thinkers.
Synopsis
Mr. Turner explores the last quarter century of the great, if eccentric,
British painter JMW Turner (1775-1851).

Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he
takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, he forms a close
relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives
incognito in Chelsea, where he dies.
Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy,
visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of
Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a
snowstorm, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by
royalty.

boyfriend. Holed up together in a Yorkshire town on the edge of the
moors, they live a hand-to-mouth existence. Aaron is AWOL from the

They find her. There's a confrontation. Her brother is killed. The stakes
have gone up.
Synopsis
It’s the summer of 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National
Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in
London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to
support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The
Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.
They've got to get out of town. They head onto the moors, pursued by
men who will stop at nothing to bring Laila back to Daddy. Propelled to a
violent conclusion, father and daughter come face to face in a terrible
confrontation.

But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the Union and go
direct to the miners. They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and
set off in a mini bus to make their donation in person. And so begins the
extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a
surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.

Queen and Country
Synopsis
It is 1952. Bill Rowan is eighteen years old, dreaming his life away at the
family's riverside home, waiting to be called up for two years'
conscription in the British Army. His idyll is shattered by the harsh
realities of boot camp. He meets Percy, an amoral prankster; they are
rivals and antagonists, but they gradually forge a deep friendship in the
claustrophobic environment of a closed, prison-like training camp. The
pressure is briefly relieved by excursions into the outside world, where
they both fall in love. Finally, Bill is confronted with the shattered lives of
wounded boys returning from Korea.
