Note from the Chairman
“ We’ve sampled over 600 wines”
It has been full on at First Estate
with more stores, more tastings,
and more outstanding buys. The
last edition of Tasting Notes really hit the mark
and this edition will be no different with
exceptional buying and tasting opportunities.
This edition contains more than 100
outstanding wines, all reviewed by our own
tasting panel or store staff; we don’t rely on
second party reviews when making our
wine selections for Tasting Notes.
Indeed, our tasting panel have immersed
themselves in wine, sampling more than
600 to ensure that you have a great
selection of top quality, value-for-money
wine from which to choose.
“100 outstanding wines
reviewed ”
Our highlight is undoubtedly the featured
producer Leasingham, who have a long
history of making sumptuous, flavoursome
wines. The current releases, from the bargain
priced Bastions to the famous Bins 56 and
61, are as good as we can ever recall.
We also take a closer look at
Coonawarra and indulge in a varietal focus
on Shiraz. Maintaining our commitment to
offer you Sydney’s best FREE wine tastings,
they are the basis for this edition’s Wine
Expos, including our ‘Annual Shiraz
Showcase’ at Figtree with more than 40 of
the country’s top Shiraz on show. You can
even put our manager’s tasting skills to the
test with our inaugural “Our Choice” tasting,
plus there’s a host of other tempting tasting
opportunities.

Australian Rhone rangers make their mark
In recent times Australian wine lovers have
gleefully accepted the growing influence of Rhone
Valley styles. We have already made the Syrah
grape (a.k.a. Shiraz) our own, producing a rich,
full-bodied style. However, we are now also
seeing Shiraz in Australia blended with other
Rhone varieties.
“ Viog nier lifts the
aroma superbly”
Blending Shiraz and Viognier, a white grape
with a distinctly perfumed aroma, is a practice
followed by the winemakers of the Cote Rotie
region of the northern Rhone Valley in France,
and it is now being done in Australia by a growing
number of winemakers. D’Arenberg, Yalumba
and Yarra Burn make some of the most interesting
examples. The addition of up to 10% of
Viognier into a full-bodied Shiraz does not lighten
the depth of colour or detract from the intensity
of flavour as one would assume, but instead
lifts the aroma superbly with perfumed floral
hints and adds a silky quality to the palate. As
time passes and the Viognier vines age we can
expect to see even more spectacular Shiraz
Viognier wines.
First Estate
Two red varieties, Grenache and
Mourvedre (known here for many years
as Mataro), are also blended with Shiraz
in the Rhone Valley to form the backbone
of their Cotes du Rhone wines. Oddly
enough in Australia, these same
varieties, grown in South Australia since
the mid-1800’s, were used almost solely
for the production of tawny port styles.
As our port market declined in
the late 1970’s, many of these
old vines were torn out and
replaced by other varieties (or
not replaced at all). Thankfully,
some old vineyards survived,
particularly in the Barossa, Clare
and McLaren Vale, and the value
of these ancient vines is now
understood. Many of these old
vines now form the basis for
some wonderful and increasingly
popular GSM wines. Rosemount,
Penfolds and Annie’s
Lane all have excellent
examples of this
style. Australia is
lucky to have the
ideal climate in which
these four classic
varieties thrive and
the winemaking talent
to turn them into
magical wines.

Coonawarra has a cooler maritime climate,
conditions very similar to the world famous
Bordeaux region of France. Generous cloud
cover and mild temperatures allow the grapes
to ripen more slowly and develop full fruit
flavours without losing acidity. Combined with
its famous terra rossa soils over limestone,
these are ideal conditions for growing the
aristocratic grape variety Cabernet Sauvignon,
though Merlot and Shiraz also perform well here.

Wineries on the move
The four wineries on this two page spread represent wineries we think are on the move! Devil’s Lair have just added a tasty but very welcome
Rosé to their value Fifth Leg range, while Kiwi newcomer Oyster Bay is making a move in Australia with their great value wines. Sadly, an Australian
icon Brown Brothers, lost their patriarch this year but his legacy remains with some exceptional wines. Cheviot Bridge is also producing some fantastic

Devilishly good wines from Margaret River

The Brown Brothers tradition continues
The recent sad
passing of John
Brown, patriarch of
the Brown Brothers
wine company, did
bring one reassuring
thought to mind - that
this family company,
steeped in history,
continues to thrive
in an increasingly
corporatised industry.
Brown Brothers
John C. Brown 1915 - 2004
has for many years
balanced a traditional appreciation of the intrinsic
link between fine wine and food with a highly
progressive approach in their varietal selections
and winemaking techniques. They were one of
the first wineries in Australia to work with Italian
grape varieties, and were even involved in the
creation of a new variety, Tarrango. It is this
sense of tradition, innovation and family values
that keeps Brown Brothers at the forefront of
Australian winemaking.

Brown Brothers Dolcetto & Syrah 2004
Brown Brothers Moscato 2003
A lesson in multi-culturalism, this blend of the Italian
Dolcetto and French Syrah is a light and juicy red
with a touch of spritz. Full of fruity appeal & should
be drunk lightly chilled. Try it with spicy pizza.
Brown Brothers gives us a great example of this
traditional Italian style. A light and grapey wine with
a slight spritz and low alcohol that is perfect with
fresh fruit.

Brown Brothers Chardonnay 2003
Absolutely true to the Italian style. “Light aromas of
crisp pear & citrus, which follow through to the
palate with a medium dry flinty finish. Tasty, moreish
& very refreshing.” Steve at First Estate Leichhardt.
This very appealing Chardonnay is full and rounded,
with peachy flavours and a buttery texture being
deftly balanced by subtle oak. A winner with veal.

By Cheviot Bridge, The Long Flat Wine Co.
produce a range of "regional varietals" that are
straight varietal wines selected from regions
considered to be the benchmark for that variety.
Our tasting panel was impressed and believe
that they offer excellent drinking with tremendous

There is perfect balance between the fresh lime and
floral notes of the variety and the delicate mineral
raciness that is a trademark of the region. An excellent
drink now wine.
This great value red wine has real Coonawarra character.
Our panel saw leafy blackcurrant fruit with the beginnings
of earthy, mushroom bottle-age development. A firm
structured wine best enjoyed with a full-flavoured roast.

The Long Flat Wine Co. Barossa Valley
Shiraz 2002
To say our tasting panel was impressed is an understatement. A wonderful Chardonnay, with pristine
peach and nectarine fruit, a rounded texture and a
hint of nutty oak.
Pick of the bunch, this is a great wine for the price.
It’s all here, bags of ripe and rounded plum fruits,
chocolate and mint, all supported by firm, fleshy
tannins with a savoury twang on the finish.

Come face to face with some great whites
White wine is undergoing a resurgence
fuelled by not only our climatic conditions but
also it seems by a willingness to try something
new. Single variety whites such as Pinot Gris (a
personal favourite) are making their mark on
our collective palate. Pinot Gris is a relative new
comer to Australia but has long been cultivated
in Europe. It produces a good dry full flavoured
and flinty style.
Leading the charge for the traditional
varieties is Sauvignon Blanc, whose demand
continues to rise. Both Australia and NZ are
producing some outstanding examples of this
variety, many of which sell out quickly. Look for
the 2004 vintage wines, which are starting to
trickle out now.
Other traditional varieties such as Semillon,
notably from the Hunter Valley, and Riesling are
making a stunning comeback, showing great
demand at retail level. Chardonnay is still our
number one white variety, with around 50% of
the market. With the continuing development of
the style now might be a good chance to give
Chardonnay another look!
