Information on Singapore Gymnastics
Singapore Gymnastics (SG) was registered with the Registry of Societies on 24 July
2003 and gazetted on 15 August 2003 as the National Sports Association for
gymnastics. Its formation by the gymnastics fraternity was supported by the
Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) and Sports Singapore (SS). Singapore
Gymnastics has been affiliated to the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique
(FIG) since December 2003. Singapore Gymnastics is a registered Charity since
December 2010. In addition, Singapore Gymnastics received the status of Institution
of a Public Character (IPC) which allows the association to receive tax-deductable
donations.

Message from the President
When the new Management Committee took office last June, there were many
challenges from lack of support staff to issues related to management of programs
etc. Fortunately we had our partner Sport Singapore and their dedicated personnel
(special thanks to Mr Richard Gordon) who stood behind and supported us.
Our General Manager, Mr Janssen Ong joined us in February 2014. We also hired a
full time Finance and Admin Manager fully funded by Sport Singapore. The
secretariat team has been restructured with General Manager in the lead and
various staff taking key roles in their respective areas of work.
Amongst many activities that took place in 2013 and 2014, the Asian Gymnaestrada
was the highlight. Details of the event can be found in other parts of this report. We
also organised a successful RG FIG judging course.
In preparation of the coming major games, we hired technical consultants for the
three disciplines to better prepare our gymnasts.
It is indeed heartening to see our gymnasts representing Singapore on the world
stage. Our gymnasts are going for the Commonwealth Games & Asian Games. One
young WAG gymnast will be going for the Nanjing’s Youth Olympics.
The journey ahead is bumpy thus the whole fraternity must work together to achieve
our goals. This is especially important when the 28th SEA Games (2015) will be on
home ground.

Membership numbers have increased gradually over
the four membership types during 2012-2014. Although
SG generally maintains its members, it is now time to
increase the benefits of membership in order to grow it
further.
With plans to accredit more coaches, judges and
officials in Singapore, as well as to improve member benefits, membership will see
growth year upon year.
SG is committed to engage and encourage Registry of Societies (ROS) registered
associations or societies to be part of SG as Full members or assist special groups to
start their own society. Successful examples would include the Rhythmic Gymnastics
Association (Singapore) that joined in 2013, and Trampoline Singapore that joined in
2014.

Great strides have been made in the industrial aspect of SG in fy12. Particularly in
2013, SG events have been cost efficient. With the FIG sanctioning of the
competition for 3 disciplines at the SG Open 2014, we aim to maintain and improve
the standards in future years.

Volunteers play an integral part in SG Events.
In the last year:
1. Volunteer Briefs have been further developed to outline the roles and give
clear guidelines.
2. SG is partnering various educational institutions such as republic Polytechnic
and Nanyang Polytechnic, who are providing volunteers who undertake
courses in Sport Management and event Management.
3. We are seeing a high number of volutneers returning for future events,
focussing and developing in their specific roles.
4. Volunteering has become one avenue for gymnasts to stay in the sport after
retirement, we are seeing gymnasts give back to the sport through
volunteering at events.

Asian Gymnaestrada in Singapore on
2nd and 3rd November 2013.
The Asian Gymnaestrada was organized to be in line with achieving SG's vision of
“Gymnastics for Everyone –Enjoyment and Excellence” and our mission of promoting
gymnastics as a sport for all ages. This is also in line with the Singapore Sports
Council’s 2030 vision to “Live Better Through Sports”.
Alongside this event, Singapore Gymnastics hosted the FIG Join the Gymnaestrada
Course between 31st October and 2nd November 2013.
10 Asian Countries
participated in this event, including: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea,
Malaysia, Mongolia, Qatar, Vietnam and Singapore.
The course was supported by FIG, and conducted by the FIG Gymnastics For All
Committee; Margaret Sikkens Ahlquist (FIG GFA President) and Mr Tatsuo Araki (FIG
GFA Vice President).

National Day Parade 2013
63 gymnasts participated in the National Day Parade,
including 6 rhythmic gymnasts and Lim Heem Wei who
lead the gymnasts through the journey to NDP2013.
This gymnastics performance combined both artistic
and rhythmic gymnasts – from beginner to National
level dancing together, which is rarely seen in regular
gymnastics competitions. The majority of gymnasts are of Primary 1 and Primary 2
age, with the youngest just 6 years old – the youngest of all participants at NDP2013!
Rehearsals took place every Saturday for 3 months, with additional rehearsals in the
last few weeks at the float to get accustomed to the large performance area and
lighting.

TRAMPOLINE GYMNASTICS
EXPOSURE & AWARENESS
A non-profit association was registered in December 2013 by a group of Trampoline
enthusiasts and they were registered as a full member of Singapore Gymnastics in
June 2014. The objectives include developing the sport of Trampoline in terms of
safety, participation, coaching, judging, competition and high performance.
COACH DEVELOPMENT
32 to 25 October 2013, three Trampoline coaches and 1 gymnast (William Soh,
Gabriel Gan, Tan Xi Ting and Lin Kwun Tong) attended a Common Training Camp for
Trampoline coaches organized by Asian Gymnastics Union. Held at the Gymnastics
Association of Thailand in Bangkok, attendees came from India, Lebanon, Nepal,
Bangladesh, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. The Trampoline expert was Mr. Ji Fang
Xin, with more than 14 years' of coaching experience at the Nanjing Sports Institute
for Trampoline. With Wen Jie, a 12-year old Trampoline gymnast from Nanjing Sports
Institute, providing actual demonstrations, which provided the coaches with an
insight into competitive trampolining.
The FIG Academy Level 1 for trampoline in August will prove to be an important next
step in improving the coaching standards in Trampolining in Singapore, and
qualifying the coaches.

COMPETITIONS
For the Women’s Artistic Junior & Senior teams, 2013 was a preparation year for 2014
major games; Commonwealth Games, Youth Olympic Games and Asian Games.
Due to this, competition was limited for Team 1 and 2 in FY13 to focus on training skill
difficulty and improving choreography. Gymnasts maintained competition exposure
at the Portugal World Cup, World University Games, World Championships and Doha
World Cup.
A. The Portugal World Cup in June 2013 saw Joey Tam qualify for the Balance
Beam event final in which she was placed 9th, the first World Cup finalist for
Singapore.
B. The World Championships in Antwerp Belgium in October 2013, saw Lim Heem
Wei and Nicolette Lim participate to improve their competition scores on a
world platform.
C. Lim Heem Wei also competed at the World University Games in July 2013
which she maintained her Individual All Around score of 51.45 and ranked 17 th
overall.
D. In 2014, in preparation for Major Games – Commonwealth and Asian Games,
Lim Heem Wei, Ashly Lau and Janessa Dai attended the Doha World Cup.
The event saw Ashly Lau, in her first year as a Senior, qualify in 7 th place on
both uneven bars and balance beam.
However, Ashly’s achievement of
scoring 14.15 on the balance beam and ranking 3rd in the qualification round
remains the highlight for Singapore at this competition. The event proved a
successful experience for the new seniors Ashly and Janessa.

SCHOLARSHIPS
In the last year, 7 of our Senior WAG gymnasts have received the SPEX Scholarship,
which provided training and competition support for December 2013 to December
2014. The 7 girls include Joey Tam, Charmaine Yeo, Nicolette Lim, Zeng Qiyan, Ashly
Lau, Janessa Dai and Michelle Teo.
COACHES
The WAG High Performance Program welcomed 2 new coaches on-board with
Coach Zhu Yibin (partnering Coach Tao Xiaomin) and Coach Chen Xiao (partnering
Coach Zhang Ruoping). They have been responsible for the International Junior
gymnasts and the development squad respectively.
TECHNICAL CONSULTANT
Lastly, the Management Committee has invited Mdm Tian Juping to be the
Technical Consultant to move Singapore towards our Olympic goal. The observation
and review trips for our WAG High Performance teams were held between 30 March
and 5 April 2014.

July 2013 saw us participating at the prestigious 27th Summer Universiade in July 2013,
a games for athletes from tertiary institutions around the world. We sent a MAG
Senior Team comprising of Hoe Wah Toon, Hoe Wah Kiat, Will Tan, Gabriel Gan and
Gregory Gan. Senior gymnast Hoe Wah Toon performed well, finishing 12th in Vault
among top vaulters in the world including Korea, Russia and Vietnam. Senior
gymnasts Gabriel Gan and Terry Tay subsequently took part in the Artistic
Gymnastics World Championships in Belgium. In this competition, Singapore’s Terry
Tay earned a place in the history books by creating and performing for the first time
the TAY, a new move named after him. This skill executed in the Rings event will be
included in the Code of Points and was awarded an ‘E” value by the Federation
Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG).
Taking into consideration that Japan has achieved top results in the world for MAG,
Singapore hopes to learn from their success to further develop the local MAG
system. In light of the good ties fostered between both our federations, Japan
Gymnastics Association (JGA) seconded a MAG coach, Mr. Kusumi Ryosuke, to fill
the position of the High-Performance Training Program team coach. His coaching
stint is supported by a visiting technical consultant, Mr. Hamada Sadao, who
will provide coaching & technical expertise to Singapore MAG. In the first of his
visits here, in April 2014, Mr. Hamada conducted workshops, which the local
MAG coaches and gymnasts benefited greatly from. Mr Kusumi Ryosuke is
currently coaching the MAG Junior team, and it is hoped that with the help of

these personnel, the technical level of men's artistic gymnastics in Singapore can be
further enhanced.

2013 saw the first time RG participated in World Championships, with Daphne Chia
as the sole representative from Singapore. Our Senior Daphne also did well at the
6th Senior Rhythmic Gymnastics Asian Championships held in Uzbekistan earlier in
June, finishing 18th all-around among the strongest competitors from China, Korea,
Japan and other Asian nations. Juniors Tong Kah Mun and Dawne Chua finished
respectably in 2nd and 8th all-around at the Zhuldyz Cup held in Astana in May, and
achieved finalist positions at Happy Caravan in June 2013 in Tashkent, and 1st, and
2nd in all-around and all event finals at the Zhong Ling Cup held in Shenzhen in July.
Pre-Juniors Megan Prem, Aiko Tan and Beth Bok also medalled in numerous events
at Zhong Ling Cup. Meanwhile, Junior Group with Goh Zhao Rong, Edlyn Ho, Noelle
Goh, Zoey Eng, Loo May Tia and Yeo Siew Lyn swept gold in 5 Hoops, 10 Clubs and
All-Around at this competition, and also took home Gold in 5 Hoops at the 4 th
International Gymnastics Friendship Competition held in KL in August. Pre-juniors
Leah Chew, Cheryl Lee and Bettie Bok also performed consistently, medalling in
numerous events at the latter competition. With the string of tournaments, the
gymnasts have gained considerable competition experience, which serve well to
prepare them as elite gymnasts for bigger international competitions.
2014 saw another first for RG, with Singapore represented by Junior Group at the
Asian Championships. Members Edlyn, Noelle, Siew Lyn, Alison Tang, Jael Chew took
part at the 13th Junior Rhythmic Gymnastics Asian Championships held in Kuala
Lumpur in Feb 2014, doing well in their first major outing by qualifying for finals in 10

Clubs. With every competition, the Group continue to perform better and continue
to build up momentum towards the bigger challenge SEA Games 2015.
RG also supplemented their coaching team with 2 additions in a bid to cater to the
growing team of gymnasts. Ms Pang Qiong, a former China national team coach,
will be coaching the Senior Individual team, and Developmental team coach, Ms
Victoria Karpenko since Feb 2014.

MC members are expected to avoid actual and perceived conflicts of interest.
Where MC members have personal interests in business transactions or contracts
that SG may enter into, or have vested interests in other organizations that SG have
dealings with or is considering to entire into joint ventures with, they are expected to

Ratio of Reserves to Annual Operating
Expenditure
As per the Reserves Policy, the Management Committee aims to provide stability to
fund the structural costs in case of a decline in SportSG’s subsidies.
The
Management Committee reviews the annual surplus semi-annually and apportions
30% of the surplus to a restricted reserve. The Management Committee aims to build
up this fund to about SGD500K or approximately equivalent of one year of
50
salaries. About SGD100K will be held in an operating bank account to fund working
capital requirements. Since setting up the reserves fund in 2010, the reserves have
been held in a separate Fixed Deposit account. The current amount is adequate to
cover at least salaries for re-employment transition in case this NSA should stop
operations.
SG is up to date with the submission of our Online Evaluation Checklist via the Charity
Portal and the renewal of our Institute of Public Character (IPC) Status. SG has also
obtained charity status with effect from December 2010.
