Game time is 10:07 p.m. CT each night. The Teams The Mavericks are 16-12-2 overall and 12-8-2 in the WCHA, putting them in a tie with Minnesota for third place, five points behind St. Cloud State. The Mavs suffered just their second series sweep of the season and first at home last weekend, losing to North Dakota, 2-1 and 5-2. UNO leads the all-time series with Alaska Anchorage, 3-2-1, and has a mark of 1-1-1 in Anchorage. The Mavericks are 6-5-1 on the road this season and 5-4-1 in their last 10 games. Alaska Anchorage earned a split at Michigan Tech last weekend, coming from behind in the third period to earn a 5-4 win on Friday before losing 6-1 on Saturday. UAA is 4-17-7 overall and 2-16-6 in the WCHA, good for 12th place. The Seawolves are 2-7-5 at home this season and 1-6-3 in their last 10 games. Last Time Out The Mavericks dropped a pair of games to North Dakota last weekend at home. On Friday, the Mavs opened the scoring when Ryan Walters converted a pass from Josh Archibald at 7:53 of the first period for his team-leading 17th goal of the year. North Dakota countered just 1:07 later when Rocco Grimaldi scored to tie the game at one. UND got the game winner at 11:34 of the second when Danny Kristo fired home his 17th goal of the year off a wild scramble at the UNO netfront. Dayn Belfour, in his first start of the year, made 34 saves for UNO while Zane Gothberg had 33 to earn the win. On Saturday, the two teams played the first outdoor game in either school’s history, taking to the temporary ice of TD Ameritrade Park, home of the NCAA Division I Men’s College World Series. UND started fast, getting goals from Jordan Schmaltz (PP), Nick Mattson and Mitch MacMillan in the first 10:32 of play. Corban Knight added a fourth goal late in the second period. UNO tried to climb back in it, getting a powerplay goal from Archibald at 7:39 and an even-strength tally from Dominic Zombo 2:22 later to make it 4-2. But Kristo added another goal for UND at 18:42 to squelch any comeback bid. John Faulkner took the loss after giving up the first three goals on five shots. Belfour made 20 saves in relief. Gothberg again picked up the win for UND making 29 saves. The Coaches Dean Blais is in his fourth year as the head coach of the Mavericks, having led UNO to two 20-win campaigns in that time. The 1973 graduate of Minnesota has posted a career record of 333-177-47 (.640) and has guided the Mavericks to a mark of 71-62-16 (.530). Blais is a two-time Spencer Penrose Memorial Award winner as the Division I coach of the year and a four-time winner of the WCHA’s Coach of the Year Award. He spent 10 years as head coach at North Dakota where he led UND to national championships in 1997 and 2000. He is assisted by first-year assistant coaches Steve Johnson and Troy Jutting who both have extensive coaching experience in the WCHA, Johnson as an assistant at St. Cloud State and Jutting as the head coach and an assistant at Minnesota State. Dave Shyiak is now in his eighth season at UAA. The 1993 graduate of Northern Michigan is 80-169-33 all-time in Anchorage. He is assisted by Campbell Blair and T.J. Jindra. Media Both games can be heard live on 1180 The Zone 2. Dave Ahlers will have the play-by-play, and Terry Leahy will have analysis for both games. Since coming to Omaha, Blais has led the Mavericks to two 20-win seasons, doing so for just the second time in school history and in the process, earned his 300th career win. In 2011-12, Blais led the Mavericks to a stunning upset of No. 1-ranked, defending national champion Minnesota Duluth, a win that ended UMD’s 17-game unbeaten streak. The win was reminiscent of his first year at UNO when the Mavericks beat top-ranked Miami in Oxford, Ohio to end the RedHawks’ 23-game unbeaten streak against fellow CCHA teams on Feb. 20, 2010. The Mavericks were another tough team to play on the road during the 2011-12 season, especially in conference play. The Mavs were 6-5-3 on the road in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, a record that included big wins at Wisconsin, Bemidji State, North Dakota, Michigan Tech and Colorado College. Under Blais’ guidance, UNO continued its trend of attracting big crowds. The Mavericks drew a school-record crowd of 16,138 for the opener of their series with Minnesota Duluth, the first sellout of the CenturyLink Center in school history. Blais once again found himself on the international stage in 2011-12, coaching Team USA in the 2012 World Junior Championship in Calgary. It was the second time in three years he had led the Americans. Blais and company won the gold medal in 2010. Blais became only the second coach in UNO hockey history on June 12, 2009, succeeding Mike Kemp. In his first year in Omaha, he guided the Mavericks to a record of 20-16-6 overall record and a 13-12-3-2 record in their final season in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The record was good for a sixth-place finish, the highest finish by a UNO team since the 2006-2007 season. The Mavericks got stronger as the year progressed. The team was just 10-11-5 entering a weekend series with Northern Michigan in January. The Mavs had already lost two games to the Wildcats in November at Marquette, but they turned the tables in the rematch, winning by scores of 7-2 and 5-3 to ignite a run in the final six weeks of the season. Blais led UNO to a record of 8-3-1 in the final 12 games. During that string, the Mavericks won at Notre Dame for the first time in nearly five years, beating the Irish 5-3 in the first game of the weekend series. They also earned their first ever series sweep over Michigan, a team they had beaten just four times in 31 prior meetings, with 4-3 and 4-1 wins at Qwest Center Omaha. They followed with their win over No. 1 Miami and closed with a 3-2 win over then-sixth ranked Bemidji State. Blais found a way to get the most from his players in his first season at UNO. Eleven different players registered career highs in either goals, assists or points during the 2009-2010 campaign. Moreover, Blais’ vaunted conditioning program paid big dividends as the Mavericks were unbeaten (14-0-3) when leading after the second period. In late December of 2010, Blais took over the reins of U.S. Junior Team at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship. He led the U.S. to a record of 6-0-1-0. The Americans capped it off with a 6-5 overtime win over host country Canada in the gold medal game on Jan. 5, just the second gold ever won by the U.S. in the World Junior tournament. During the 2010-11 season, Blais led UNO into the WCHA where the Mavs finished third after being chosen to finish eighth and ninth in two pre-season polls. UNO returned to the NCAA playoffs for just the second time in school history and achieved a national ranking of fourth for four straight weeks, the highest in school history. Under Blais’ leadership, the Mavericks were 21-16-2 and 17-9-2 in their first WCHA season. The third-place finish was the highest ever for the Mavs in conference play. UNO’s strong showing earned Blais the nod as the WCHA’s Coach of the Year and put him in the running for the Spencer Penrose Trophy as Division I hockey’s top coach. It wasn’t difficult to see why Blais earned the accolades. The Mavericks swept their first-ever WCHA series, winning twice at Minnesota. They followed that with a split of a non-conference series at Michigan, a place they had won just once previously. Before Christmas, the Mavericks had won and tied at alwaystough St. Cloud State and stunned pre-season favorite North Dakota, winning 1-0 at home on a goal with .3 seconds remaining in regulation. The second half of the year featured another stunning win over North Dakota, this time by an 8-4 tally at vaunted Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. Typical of Blais’ teams, the Mavericks surged down the stretch with back-to-back sweeps of St. Cloud and Wisconsin and hard-fought splits with Denver and at eventual national champion Minnesota Duluth. Blais earned win number 300 with a 4-3 win over the Badgers on Feb. 12 to complete the sweep. UNO’s return to the NCAA playoffs was short-lived as the Mavericks lost to Michigan 3-2 in overtime in the regional semifinals, but Blais once again was successful in further raising the expectations of his players and UNO fans alike. Seven players registered career highs in either goals, assists or points. Blais came to UNO from the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League where he served as head coach and general manager. As head coach of an expansion team in 2008-09, Blais led the Force to a record of 32-23-5. The team 2012-13 OMAHA HOCKEY DEAN BLAIS cont. advanced to the USHL’s Clark Cup Finals before losing to the Indiana Ice three games to one. He was named USHL Coach of the Year, and the Force were named Organization of the Year. As a college coach, Blais won NCAA Division I national championships as the head coach of the University of North Dakota in 1997 and 2000. North Dakota was the runner up in 2001, the last of five straight NCAA appearances under Blais. Overall, the native of International Falls, Minn. guided North Dakota to seven NCAA appearances, five regular season WCHA titles and two WCHA playoff championships in addition to the national championships. Blais is a two-time winner of the Spencer Penrose Memorial Award given to the Division I coach of the year. He is a four-time WCHA coach of the year honoree. He was 262-115-33 (.679), including five 30-win seasons, at North Dakota. In total, he spent 19 seasons with UND, nine as an assistant and 10 as the head coach. In that time, he coached 60 NHL draft picks, 28 All-Americans, three WCHA players of the year, four WCHA rookies of the year, 40 members of the All-WCHA team and 11 All-WCHA rookie team picks. In addition to coaching Team USA in 2010 and 2012, Blais was the head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team in 1993 and an assistant in 1987 and 1988. He was an assistant for Team USA in the 2000 IIHF World Championships. He also worked for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League from 2004-2007. He served as associate head coach during the 2005-06 season and as director of player development in 2006-07. Blais played college hockey at the University of Minnesota from 1969-73. In 124 games, he had 56 goals and 83 assists for 139 points. He was the Gophers’ Rookie of the Year in 1970 and was an NCAA All-Tournament selection in 1971. After college, he played three seasons of pro hockey with the Chicago Blackhawks’ development team in Dallas, Texas. He began his college career as an assistant at Minnesota in 1976-77 and then was the head coach at Minot (N.D.) High School from 1977-80 before his stint as an assistant at North Dakota. Blais left UND to be the head coach at Roseau (Minn.) High School in 1989-90 where he led his team to the Minnesota State Championship. His team was the conference and regional champion in 1991. He then left to serve as assistant coach of the U.S. Olympic Since coming to Omaha, Dean Blais has led the Mavericks to two 20-win seasons, their highest-ever conference finish and a berth in the NCAA playoffs, the second in school history. Men’s Ice Hockey Team that took fourth place in the Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, France. After the Olympics, Blais returned to the high school ranks as athletic director and hockey coach at International Falls (Minn.) High School before rejoining North Dakota as head coach in 1994. In April of 2010, Blais signed a contract extension with UNO taking him through the 2014-15 season. Blais is the father of three grown children: Sarah, Ben and Mary Beth. He remains one of the front-runners for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, averaging 1.40 points per game, a mark that’s tied for fourth in the country. Walters was named the Hockey Commissioners Association national player of the month for November, the first Maverick in recent memory to win the award. Walters had six goals and nine assists for 15 points and a +8 rating in seven games to help the Mavericks to a perfect 7-0-0 record. During that stretch, he scored goals in five straight games. After being held off the board in the first game of the month, he scored at least two points in each of the other six games and extended his point streak into December with two assists in UNO’s 3-2 loss at Minnesota on Dec. 1. Voting is now open at HobeyBakerAward.com where Walters is one of 77 student-athletes on the fan ballot which is open until March 10. The last time the Mavericks had a Hobey Baker Award finalist was 2006-07, the second straight season in which the program’s all-time leading scorer, Scott Parse, was among the top 10. Getting Out The Broom The Mavericks have already earned five series sweeps this season, four of which have come in WCHA play and two of which have happened on the road, including the most recent sweep at Bemidji State on Jan. 25-26. It marked the first time UNO had swept BSU in a weekend series. The Mavericks last had five series sweeps during the 2010-11 season, their first in the WCHA. All were against WCHA teams. The school record for regular season two-game sweeps is six (2000-01, 2001-02, and 2006-07). UNO’s series against North Dakota on Feb. 8-9 marked the first time it had been swept at home, and it was just the second time this season the Mavs had failed to pick up at least one point in a weekend. They also lost a pair of games at Quinnipiac on Dec. 29-30. Players of the Week Senior John Faulkner picked up his second WCHA Defensive Player of the Week Award on Jan. 29. Faulkner backstopped both UNO wins at Bemidji State, 2012-13 OMAHA HOCKEY posting a 2.00 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage. He also earned the award on Nov. 13 after earning both wins in a home sweep of Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 10-11 during which he posted a 2.50 goalsagainst average and a.924 save percentage. Sophomore forward Josh Archibald was named the WCHA’s Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Jan. 8 following a four-goal weekend against Colorado College on Jan. 4-5. Archibald, who shared the award with North Dakota’s Corban Knight, registered UNO’s first hat trick of the season in Friday’s 8-4 win and scored the four goals on the only shots he took all weekend. He finished the weekend with a +4 rating. Junior right wing Zahn Raubenheimer earned Offensive Player of the Week honors on Nov. 6 following his own four-goal weekend in a sweep at Michigan Tech on Nov. 2-3. In that series, he notched the game winning goal in each game. Career Years Ten Mavericks have already posted career numbers for goals, assists and/or points. Junior Ryan Walters has already put up career highs in goals, assists and points and at his present clip of 1.40 points per game, he could reach 50 points this season which would be the third highest single-season point total in school history. The top two spots are held by two-time Hobey Baker Award finalist Scott Parse who had 61 points during the 2005-06 season and 52 the following year. Among the other Mavericks who have already hit career highs: Player: Career Highs Previous Career High Josh Archibald: 16-13-29 10-5-15 Dominic Zombo: 10-17-27 2-1-3 Andrej Sustr: 7 goals, 20 points 4 goals, 17 points Johnnie Searfoss: 16 points 15 points Jaycob Megna: 4 assists, 6 points 3 assists, 5 points Zahn Raubenheimer: 8 goals 4 goals Brock Montpetit: 12 assists 11 assists In addition, sophomore defenseman Brian O’Rourke has earned a goal and three assists so far this season after not registering a point during his freshman year. Sophomore forward James Polk also has earned the first two goals of his career this season after tallying just one assist last year. The Century Mark Juniors Michael Young and Andrej Sustr became the lastest Mavericks to become a member of the Century Club. Young hit the mark on Feb. 1 against Michigan Tech while Sustr did so the following night. They follow a host of teammates who have reached the 100 game plateau this season. Earlier this season, defenseman Bryce Aneloski joined the Century Club on Nov. 2 when he played in his 100th career game. It’s a total that includes 16 games played at Providence College during his freshman year. Senior John Faulkner played in his 100th career game at Quinnipiac on Dec. 30. Ryan Walters played in game No. 100 on Jan. 12 at Denver while Matt White hit the mark on Jan. 25 at Bemidji State. Senior Brent Gwidt played in career game number 100 on Feb. 24, 2012 against Minnesota and leads all Mavericks with 135 games played. Streaking Ryan Walters has an impressive games-played streak in the works. After not playing in the second game of his freshman year, he has been a fixture in the lineup since then and has a 105-game streak in the works. Bryce Aneloski had played in 100 straight games before not suiting up for the Mavericks in their game at Denver on Jan. 12. Stopping Power Senior goaltender John Faulkner earned his 14th win of the season against Michigan Tech on Feb. 1 and currently has the third best winning percentage in the WCHA (14-6-2, .682). It is also the 11th-best mark in the country. When Faulkner backstopped both ends of a series sweep at Bemidji State on Jan. 25 and 26, it marked the fourth time this season he has been in goal for both ends of a series sweep. In addition to the BSU series, he also was in goal for both wins at Michigan Tech on Nov. 2 and 3, against Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 10 and 11 and against Colorado College on Jan. 4 and 5. He posted two his freshman season, five during an outstanding sophomore campaign and one last season. Faulkner ranks second all-time in wins at UNO with 52 and needs just one more to tie Dan Ellis for the lead. He also has played in 5,995:17 of action and ranks second all-time at UNO. He also is second in games played at UNO with 109 and is just one shutout away from tying Ellis for the most all-time by a UNO goalie (7). Moving On Freshman goaltender Anthony Stolarz left the Mavericks on Jan. 7 to join the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. In eight appearances this season, seven of them starts, the native of Jackson, N.J. had posted a record of 2-5-0 with a 2.56 goals-against average and a.898 save percentage. He also posted UNO’s only shutout of the season to date, a 20-save effort in an 8-0 win over Alabama-Huntsville on Nov. 24. They had received votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll in three different weeks before cracking that poll’s top 15 on Nov. 19. Both polls appear in this release. Taking Their Shots The Mavericks have outshot their opponents in 21 of 29 games this season with their Jan. 4 game with Colorado College featuring 30 shots per team. Their high-water mark was 46 shots at Denver on Jan. 12, and they have reached 40 shots or more in six games. They average 32.33 shots per game to rank 15th in the country and fourth in the WCHA. Their 20 shots at Minnesota on Dec. 1 was a season low. The Mavs are eighth in the nation and third in the WCHA in fewest shots allowed per game, giving up just 26.40. UNO allowed Northern Michigan just 13 shots on Oct. 19, a season best, while tying a school record by allowing just one shot in the first period. They Don’t Mind The Draft The Mavericks have more drafted players on their roster than at any time in school history. Seven Mavs have been drafted by National Hockey League teams including two players taken in the 2012 draft. They include: Brian Cooper - Anaheim ‘12 Jaycob Megna - Anaheim ‘12 Nick Seeler - Minnesota ‘11 Josh Archibald - Pittsburgh ‘11 Tanner Lane - Winnipeg ‘10 Bryce Aneloski - Ottawa ‘10 Brent Gwidt - Washington ‘06 Measuring Up The 26 student-athletes who make up the Omaha roster this year are, on average, a sizeable bunch. The Mavericks’ average height is 6-1 1/2”, and their average weight is 197 1/2 lbs. That’s up from 6-1 and 194 1/2 lbs. from the end of last season.
