Chiclayo & Trujillo
Arequipa & Colca Canyon
On the northern coast of Peru, once the center of the pre-Inca Chimu
and Moche civilizations, Chiclayo is famous for the Tomb of the Lord
of Sipán unearthed in 1987. Outside of Trujillo, the Chimu left the
fascinating "mud city" of Chan Chan.
Known for stunning architecture, delicious cuisine, and its local drink,
pisco, Arequipa is Peru's second most important city. Just 2-hours
north lies magnificent Colca Canyon, famous for pre-Inca terraces and
condors soaring over the world's deepest canyon.

Climate: The highlands of Peru have two
seasons: the rainy season runs between
January and April and the dry season runs
between May and December. The dry season
is the best time to visit. Crowds are heaviest
during July and August. Cuzco’s average high
temperature ranges between 66oF and 70oF
year-round; average lows range from 34o in
June, July, and August to between 41o and
44o the rest of the year. Short showers are
common in Cuzco, Sacred Valley, and Machu
Picchu throughout the year. We recommend
that you schedule two visits to Machu Picchu
as the citadel is often surrounded by fog and
you'll want a clear view to capture the
perfect photo.
Transportation & Geography: Cuzco is

typically reached by air from Lima but you
can also reach the city by train or bus from
Puno. We recommend flying to Cuzco and
heading straight to the Sacred Valley for a few
nights to acclimate at a lower altitude. Once
settled, off to iconic Machu Picchu, which
can only be accessed from Aguas Calientes,
the small village near the base of the ruins.
Aguas Calientes can be reached by train
from either Poroy Station (near Cuzco) or
Ollanta Station (near Sacred Valley). Your visit
can be organized as a day-trip from either
location or give yourself the luxury of time by
overnighting. Shuttle buses to the ruins from
Aguas Calientes run frequently from 5:30
am to 5:30 pm and the Machu Picchu Ruins
opens at 6:00 am. After Machu Picchu, spend
a few nights exploring the Inca capital of
Cuzco before continuing to Lake Titicaca, the
Amazonas region, or back to Lima
Luggage: Trains have a strict one carry-on
bag policy. Pack an overnight bag and
store your extra luggage in the Sacred
Valley or Cuzco.
Permits: Inca Trail permits sell out
months ahead of time. Advance purchase
is required for entrance to Machu Picchu
with an additional permit in order to hike the
formidable Wayna Picchu mountain.

Lake Titicaca Planning Tips
Planning tips for Lake Titicaca:
Climate: Pleasant and sunny days around
60°F from Feb.-Nov. with rainfall during
Dec.-Jan. Nights are generally at or below
freezing with the coolest period from
May-Sep. As Titicaca is the highest navigable
lake in the world, it's best to relax on your
first day and acclimate to the altitude.

Lake Titcaca
Geography: Puno is the gateway to
breathtaking Lake Titicaca. The bustling city
can often feel hectic with dizzying traffic,
which is why we recommend staying at
one of our tranquil lakeside hotels. Titicaca
straddles the border of Peru and Bolivia and
it is easy to cross between the two countries
and see both sides. Visa required for Bolivia.

Transportation: Puno can be reached
in several ways. Our favorite is the luxury
train ride from Cuzco which operates Mon.,
Wed., and Sat. year-round, as well as Fri.
from May-Oct. Flights to nearby Juliaca
airport or comfortable coach buses to
Puno are also good alternatives.
