Leah’s mouth began to hurt. At first, her mom thought the pain was due to teething. But when Leah started to run a fever and didn’t want to walk, her parents called their pediatrician. Tests soon revealed Leah suffered from acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer. ―Our world just fell apart,‖ said Leah’s mom. Her family was quickly referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where Leah began a two-and-a-half-year chemotherapy treatment protocol. The hospital’s groundbreaking development of combination therapy for children with ALL revolutionized leukemia therapy worldwide and increased the survival rate from 4 percent when St. Jude opened in 1962 to 94 percent today. Leah’s treatment has sometimes been difficult, but that hasn’t stopped her from doing the things little girls her age love to do, like play with her baby dolls or go to the playground, or, when a rousing game of hide and-seek is through, reach her arms up to her beloved brother so he can give her a hug. Friends of the River Foundation (FOR) helped restore more than 60 miles the San Joaquin River in 2010. The San Joaquin River was pumped dry for more than 60 years. After years of persistence by FOR and others, water was returned to a once forsaken river. In just six months of restored flows, river vegetation and wildlife began to return. Restored flows on the San Joaquin have brought back a refreshing oasis to the valley and improved opportunities for healthy outdoor recreation for millions of people. FEDERATIONS - GLOBAL IMPACT BY GIVING TO GLOBAL IMPACT, YOU SUPPORT: •We are the trusted catalyst that brings together organizations to save lives following catastrophes and conflicts •The organization is highly regarded for its integrity and effectiveness Umi was three months old when her mother brought her to Save the Children. She weighed 3.5 pounds. She had been suffering from diarrhea and malnutrition since she was a few days old and her terrified mother didn’t even think she would survive. The look on her mother’s face is one of fear and uncertainty. Three months later, the baby we see in that photograph is gone, but she is not dead. Umi is no longer an iconic image of hunger and drought; she is now a healthy, plump, and smiling six-month-old baby girl. Umi survived, but thousands like her still face starvation. ―You know well that my daughter was so sick that day that she was almost dying,‖ says Halima, ―so you can only imagine how unhappy and how sad I was as a mother. But today I have a healthy daughter and I’m so happy. You cannot even compare the joy I feel today to the sadness I felt three months ago – it is just not comparable.‖ Visit www.cgc to donate Umi was given a foil pack of thick and nourishing high-nutrient peanut paste called Plumpy Nut. Umi’s eyes opened wide as she gobbled down the sweet food behind her toothless gums. A tangible calm came over her as, over the course of the next half hour, she steadily swallowed the entire contents of the package. Day after day for six weeks since she had been discharged from the hospital, this therapeutic food has been helping her gain weight; stay nourished, and come back to life. 9 Local Independent Charities Member Causes FEDERATIONS - LOCAL INDEPENDENT CHARITIES Visit www.cgc to donate 10 4000 Local Independent Charities of America 4001 10,000 Degrees 4002 Abandoned Children's Fund 4003 Affordable Housing for Americans in Need (Mercy Housing, Inc.) 4004 AIDS Emergency Fund 4005 All About Kids/Sunny Hills 4006 America SCORES Bay Area 4007 American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter 4008 Ames Child Care Center 4009 Animal Spay Neuter International 4010 Asian Law Caucus 4011 Avian Rescue Corporation 4012 Bethany Christian Services of Northern California Inc. 4013 Beyond Emancipation 4014 Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area 4015 Birthright Of San Jose, Inc. 4016 Black Adoption Placement & Research Center 4017 Black Organizing Project (Fiscal Sponsor: Center for Third World Organizing) 4018 Blind Babies Foundation 4019 Boy Scouts of America, Santa Clara County Council 4020 Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco 4021 Boys Hope Girls Hope of San Francisco 4022 Breast Cancer Emergency Fund 4023 Breathe California Central Coast 4024 Breathe California, Golden Gate Public Health Partnership 4025 Bridges of Promise 4026 Building Futures with Women and Children 4027 California Law Enforcement "Wish Upon A Star" 4028 California Potbellied Pig Association 4029 Cancer in the Family Relief Fund 4030 Cancer Research Wellness Institute 4031 Catholic Service Organizations of America 4032 Cats on Death Row 4033 Center for Early Intervention on Deafness 4034 Child Advocates of Silicon Valley (Court Designated Child Advocates) 4035 Children's Charitable Alliance 4036 Children's Hospital & Research Center Foundation 4037 Children's Medical Aid Foundation 4038 Children's Path Programs 4039 Chinese For Affirmative Action 4040 CityTeam Ministries 4041 Civicorps Schools 4042 Coming Home Project 4043 Coral Reef Alliance 4044 Correctional Peace Officers Foundation 4045 Court Appointed Special Advocates Of Santa Cruz County 4046 Covenant House California 4047 disABLEDperson Inc. 4048 Discovery Blind Sports 4049 Discovery Eye Foundation 4050 Dogs & Cats Stranded on the Streets 4051 Dogs for Diabetics, Inc. 4052 Dogs On Death Row 4053 Dolphins, Whales & Sea Turtles: Save and Protect 4054 Employment & Community Options 4055 Extend Your Heart 4056 Family Caregiver Alliance 4057 Family Supportive Housing 4058 Filipino American International Youth Development Foundation 4059 Friends of Alameda County CASA, Inc. 4060 Geokids 4061 George Mark Children's House 4062 German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California Inc. 4063 Golden Gate Community Health 4064 Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue 4065 Good Karma Bikes 4066 Green Planet Films, Inc. 4067 Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc. 4068 Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary 4069 Hispanic and Asian Children Services 4070 Hispanic Scholarship Fund 4071 Homeless Children's Network 4072 Horizons Foundation 4073 Horses On Death Row 4074 Hospice by the Bay 4075 Hospice of the Valley 4076 Hospice, Pathways Home Health and Hospice (Pathways Home Health and Hospice) 4077 Human Investment Project (HIP Housing) 4078 Humane Farming Association 4079 Humane Society Silicon Valley 4080 Irish Cultural Centre of California 4081 Janet Pomeroy Center 4082 Junior Achievement of Northern California 4083 Junior Blind of America 4084 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation – Greater Bay Area Chapter 4085 Kyros Ministry 4086 Legal Aid Society - Employment Law Center 4087 Legal Services For Children, Inc. 4088 LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired 4089 Lily's Legacy Senior Dog Sanctuary 4090 Lindsay Wildlife Museum 4091 Little Wishes 4092 Local Animal Charities of America 4093 Loved Twice 4094 Lung Cancer Research Foundation, Bonnie J. LIC charities educate children, feed and shelter the homeless, strengthen families, rescue unwanted animals and much more. Local Independent Charities was organized over 20 years ago in California to help local charities participate in workplace giving campaigns. Our organization is about taking care of our neighbors and strengthening our communities. Local charities embrace the values of your community and understand where the needs are. When you give locally, you’ll see the charitable dollars at work in your community. Our mission: Our member groups specialize in feeding the To organize and prepare our member charities for effective participation in at-work employee charitable fund drives, to screen and certify these charities to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria to participate in these fund drives, to help educate contributors about the work of these worthy causes, and to provide for the secure, accurate, and timely transmission of contributions from the fund drives to the recipient charities. Help our members continue to do great work in your community by supporting them in your workplace giving campaign! The Good Karma Bikes manifesto is simple and straightforward: provide and repair homeless and low income people’s bicycles, for free. No need is turned away and their volunteers support the effort with contributions of their time, talent and treasure to provide the necessary resources. They are incredibly proud and honored that many of their clients return each week to work as volunteers, learning bicycle repair skills and helping others. Some of their client-volunteers have acquired enough experience through our Certified Bicycle Technician job skills program to begin teaching others. This is a terrific self-esteem boost, as well as an avenue to future employment and increased self-sufficiency. Visit www.cgc to donate Did you ever stop to think about the fact that homelessness and poverty not only leave potentially productive people destitute, without options and resources, it can strip individuals and families of personal autonomy and self determination? He knew his job skills were not up to date, making it difficult to compete in the current job market. Juan felt lost and became anxious about getting back into the workforce. The intake team at Goodwill found that Juan was a perfect candidate for the Transitional Job Program. Just a month into the program, Juan learned about workplace etiquette, participated in motivational workshops, and gained the confidence he needed to succeed. After a few months in the program, Juan discovered he has marketable skills. He is now a regular employee at Goodwill working in the IT department.
