More than 110 link enthusiasts drove, pitched, putted, pouted, and pounded chests as they competed for the impressive hardware donated by Don MacIntosh of Mac Awards. King County Executive Dow Constantine visits in August to tell Chamber membership luncheon attendees what is happening with his King County administration. In his first year in office, he forged a partnership to obtain a $44 million federal allocation for Howard Hanson Dam repairs and dramatically reduced the threat of Green River Valley flooding, assembled a coalition of governments to fund the construction of a new South Park Bridge, and joined with the state to finance the County’s purchase of a Maury Island gravel mine slated for major expansion, thereby preserving a mile of natural Puget Sound shoreline. Before his election as Executive, Constantine served as a King County Council member for eight years, and has held elected office in Washington state for 15 years. Peter Kirk Club Karen Story Neighborhoods Kurt Triplett SummerFest and Beyond A new event is coming to Kirkland and expectations are high. Months of planning, fundraising, negotiations and contracts are culminating in a two-day event that will draw people from far and wide. If it’s high culture you’re after, The Winter’s Tale by Shakespeare, is sure to entertain. If you have children, there will be endless activities and play areas. Foodies will have over 16 food trucks to sample from. Add music, art exhibits and a beer and wine garden and you get an event that has something for everyone. Kirkland has been producing one exciting event after another this year. Starting with The Shamrock Run, we had over 2,000 runners racing out of Marina Park and reveling around town. The Concerts in the Park kicked off in June and music continues to reverberate throughout downtown each Tuesday morning and Thursday evening. The Celebrate Kirkland 4th of July parade and fireworks, was a huge success thanks to our sponsors and the City of Kirkland’s commitment to ensure that this tradition lives on. Kirkland Uncorked was another home-run success bringing people from all points in the northwest to town. The Cruise In and Dance/Car Show rolled into town with beautiful weather, and the glossy polish of spiffed- up colorful cars reflected the sun up and down the waterfront. SummerFest will be the last of the big events for the summer and is a fitting bookend to an amazing season. None of these events could happen without an event leader and their dedicated volunteers. Ben Wobker, owner of Lake Washington Physical Therapy, spearheaded The Shamrock Run. Karen Story oversees the bookings and planning of the Summer Concerts Series. Penny Sweet, City Council member and owner of The Grape Choice, pulled everybody together for Celebrate Kirkland. Teri Fletcher of Hallmark Realty and her team made the Car Show possible, and Rob Butcher of Kirkland Views along with Michele Sailor are co-chairs spearheading a dynamic committee of local citizens and business people producing SummerFest. Everyone running these events has a full time job and it is astounding the additional hours they put in to make these events happen. Kirkland is lucky to have such dedicated volunteers who pull off these events on a shoestring budget. As we roll into September our attention turns to smaller scale and more business focused events. The Greater Kirkland Chamber of Commerce will produce Sustainable CHAMBER STAFF September, a month of programs designed around companies, services, homes and products that help sustain our planet’s resources. Chamber lunches will have forums featuring leaders in sustainability and breakout sessions with experts in the field. An after-hours vendor fair, sponsored by The Kirkland Reporter, will display merchants specializing in green products and resources. In November, the Chamber brings attention to our high tech entrepreneurs. StartUp Weekend (some are calling it a Hackethon), will take place at the Woodmark Hotel. Over 125 of the best and brightest in the IT industry will gather November 9 to hear from visionaries, and then they will be given an assignment to create a new company or IT application within 48 hours. They will sleep little and work tirelessly to be rated highest when they present the outcome of their work to a panel of judges representing leaders in the field. Not only will StartUp Weekend Kirkland allow industry leaders to vet the local talent, but there will also be cash prizes, job offers, promotions, and stories in techie publications. Stay tuned to learn more about this exciting event in the months ahead. The Summer Concerts and the Kirkland Downtown Association are collaborating on a special show, Friday, August 10. Awardwinning progressive banjo player Jayme Stone merges World Music with Progressive Bluegrass and is revered in Canada. Be sure to make a date to see Jayme Stone at the Kirkland Performance Center. By the end of the class, those who passed the course had produced something that most small business owners do not have – a thoroughly researched and well documented business plan. Why would anyone embark on the treacherous journey of business ownership without a roadmap? I have heard lots of excuses. My business is too small. It’s all in my head. I do not have time to Policy committee endorses roads levy At its July 16th meeting the Kirkland Chamber Public Policy Committee in a vote of 5 members with two abstentions recommended that the Chamber Board support the City of Kirkland levy for road improvements. The committee will consider whether to support the park levy at its next meeting on August 20th and will be considering the Eastside Legislative Coalition positions in detail. A business plan does not need to be a magnum opus. In fact, the executive summary of a good business plan contains the key information that is fundamental to defining your business and how it will make money. While executive summaries normally run two to three pages in length, it is possible to boil things down even further into a one page document that covers the following topics: • Customer Problem • Your Solution • Business Model (how you make money) • Competitive Advantage • Management Team • Financial Summary If the thought of preparing a full blown business plan is too daunting, try coming up with a one pager. Because if you do not know where you are going, any road will take you there. Duncan Milloy, Ph.D., is Kirkland’s Business Retention Consultant.
