PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hello Everyone,
It was sure great to see you
all this year at Seven Springs!
It seems that we all had a
wonderful time. I know I sure
did and the money $$$ I
saved on supplies this year
was UNBELIEVABLE! Plus, the
weather, for the most part,
was pretty good except for the one day. For those
of you who couldn’t make it, we hope to see you
next year.
I want to thank all who had helped with
running the show and especially those who
helped out with the backboards. It takes a lot of
time, planning and work to put a show like this
together and we could not do it without your
help. We are always in need of members to help
and serve on the committees…. any help at all,
even an hour of your time is appreciated.
Our summer board meeting will be held again
at my studio on June 6th at 9 am. We will be
working on another great show and like I have
said many times, if you have any concerns or
ways of improving this association, please
contact your nearest director.
I hope you all have a nice summer.
Take care and God Bless,
2015-2016

PTA Board of Directors Meeting
January 3, 2015 - 7Springs, PA
Board Members Present – Bob Hutchinson, Jason Krause, Jessica Simmons, John Czerniakowski, Rod Connelly, Ray Kowalski, Dan Swanson, Michele
Burkholder, Vince Spellane, Matt Zimmerman
Board Members Absent – Joe Simmons, Tim Jordan
Guests – Becky & Dan Snyder, Amy Hutchinson, Ella Connelly, Lisa Flickinger, Kim Kowalski, Patti Czerniakowski and Tim Barnes
The meeting was called to order at 9:06am.
Follow-Up:
• John Czerniakowski presented the treasurer's report. John has some concerns regarding the small amount of revenue that has come in.
The board discussed that this is a timing issue. The board had opted to not send the membership/registration letters out separate this year
instead all registration information will be in the Review. The board is anticipating the Review to have a bigger impact on members as
opposed to the mailer. John reported that the balance in the Camp Compass account was $450, Legal fund $1046 and PTACT $1580. The
legal fund is low due to the use of those monies to being put toward paying for the convention while in Altoona. PTACT has been able to
build funds by not advertising since 2010. Jessica Simmons made a motion to approve the treasurers report - 2nd by Jason Krause - motion
carried unanimously.
• Becky Snyder has the information regarding bonding Board members almost completion. This will take place at the March meeting.
• Becky and Dan Snyder went to Lancaster to look into moving the show to different locations. We can fit in the Lancaster Host the
cost would be $5000 if we are able to book 90% of the 160 rooms. If we book less rooms there is an additional charge of 25% and up
depending on what percentage of rooms are book. Vendors would only be allowed to ship in material 48 hours prior to the show. There are
some additional shipping and receiving fees that would go along with that as well as fees to use their forklift to unload. We would have 50
tables available and have the ability to rent the additional tables for $15 plus sales tax each. The Jaffa Shrine Center was contacted by a
member who wanted to remain un-named to see if the convention could be held there. The Jaffa Shrine contacted Becky Snyder and asked
for our convention spec sheets. She sent them the spec sheets and the Jaffa Shrine replied that they would love to have us unfortunately
their facility would not be able to meet the needs of the PTA. John Czerniakowski asked about state college. Becky Snyder said that we can
fit the issues is seminar rooms. State College still has made no upgrades and we would have limited space for seminars. Rod Connelly had
mentioned that many members travel much further to go to the world show. Rod Connelly also mentioned that if interest was so high in
moving the show East that there should have been a lot more participation at the Cabelas show. Rod Connelly made a motion to book at
7Springs for 2018, 2019 and 2020 around the same dates that we currenlyt use - 2nd by Jessica Simmons - motion carried unanimously.
Michele Burkholder added that the NTA is also looking at the 7Springs facility to have their convention.
• Wednesday night event will be Mike Rohanna mounting a Hartebeest. This event will be moved to Festival Hall instead of the competition
room. Bob Hutchinson is checking with HQ to have the manikin donated to the association. Jason Krause was able to help acquire this piece
for the PTA. If anyone has any connections for such pieces that we can use as a seminar please contact your nearest board member. The
board would like to see several different species being mounted in the Festival Hall. These are seminars that not only benefit the membership they also help generate money for the association.
• Bob Hutchinson would like to keep the relationship that we have built with the PA Outdoor News. Michele Burkholder brought up some
concerns that she received about PA Outdoor News being in the competition room. Going forward we are going to have them set up in the
entrance (near the tables where the public enters). Michele Burkholder made a motion to invite PA Outdoor News back using the same
criteria as last year, we buy an ad they buy a table - 2nd by Rod Connelly - motion carried unanimously.
• There was a change to the photographer John Helm will be the photographer at the convention. Michelle Evinger was unable to return due
to some prior obligations. The Board agreed that John Helm is a great choice as he voluntary takes care of the pictures for Cabelas and
does a wonderful job.
• Vince Spellane addressed the language that the majority of the work on a piece must be completed by the competitor. The proposed
wording change will read as follows "It is MANDATED by the competition committee that Individual entries must be completed by the
competitor without assistance. This would include finishing and habitat work. Components and supplies utilized in a competitor’s piece will
be assumed to be purchased unless declared at registration or in a Judges note. Collective Artists entries should refer to the guidelines
found in section II Division of Competition (Art and Taxidermy) section F Collective Artists Division. Vince Spellane made a motion to use
the proposed wording beginning at the 2015 convention - 2nd by Jason Krause - motion carried unanimously.
• Bob Hutchinson discussed that PTACT will not be acquiring a DMV license plate at this time as there was not enough interest from current
PTACT members.
• The board discussed traveling seminars as a great way to build membership and awareness. If anyone is interested in hosting please
contact you nearest board member.
• Becky Snyder wanted to mention that John Czerniakowski and Ray Kowalski will be running the raffle table this year as Brian Claar will be
judging. If anyone is interested in helping them out please stop by at the convention and let them know.
Committee Reports:
• Dan Snyder had no new legislative news to report.
• Ray Kowalski reported out on nominations. Thus far we have Bob Hutchinson for President, Jason Krause for Vice President, Patti Czerniakowski for treasurer, Jessica Simmons secretary. Those 4 positions are running unopposed and no resumes will be submitted. BOD Joe
Simmons, Dan Swanson, Dave Clark, Bill Ward, Chuck St. Clair and Rich Nagle. Thus far Ray Kowalski has not been able to reach Dave Clark
to either accept, decline or submit a resume for his nomination. Ray Kowalski also discussed the issues with the tracking of Family Lifetime
membership. Currently the program does not have a drop down to track Life Time Family Memberships. Becky Snyder is going to look into
this with Dee Carley. **Additional Note after the meeting the BOD received a very respectful and professional email from Dave Clark, he is
unable to accepts the nomination at this time.
• Jason Krause reported out on the Cabelas show. The weekend that the show is normally held is unavailable for next year, Bill and Bridget
are working with Harold to finalize the dates. The dates they are working on as first choice are 9/18, 9/19 and 9/20. There was a mix up at
the show regarding the Best of show award. Harold and Cabelas graciously donated an additional $250 gift card to rectify the mix up, this
was a onetime error and will have no impact on upcoming shows.
• Jason Krause reported out on the Harrisburg show. Jason Krause finally received a call back from the show coordinator. They will be
continuing with the same set up as last year only allowing those with booth space to participate in a competition voted on by the public.
• Tim Barnes wanted to discuss who is permitted to write for the judges. The PTA Policies & Procedures state that The Board of Directors &
Committee People can compete with the exception of the Convention Coordinator & Competition room Chair and Co Chair. The board
discussed this and agreed that if you have a piece in the competition room you will not be permitted to write for any judge.
New Business:
• Jason Krause was contacted by a member regarding the PTACT tab on the web site. The member wanted to know if PTACT was paying to
advertise on the web site. The board discussed and decided that the PTACT is a sanctioned program of the PTA & is included on the website.
PTACT will pay for any and all print ads seperately. The member also inquired if there was a way to list taxidermists that have received their
Master Certificates from the PTA. Becky Snyder is going to look into this.
• John Czerniakowski made a motion to adjourn, the meeting was adjourned at 11:53am.
Respectfully Submitted,
Jessica Simmons – Board Secretary

Pennsylvania Taxidermist Association, Inc.
Membership Meeting
Saturday, March 21, 2015 – 7Springs, PA
Bob Hutchinson opened the meeting asking if the members had any questions.
• A member asked that if the seminar schedule changes that the information get out to the membership earlier. Matt Zimmerman explained that
this was a learning experience and all changes had been posted on taxi.net. All members should keep an eye on that site right up to the last
minute.
• A member mentioned that they liked that the show was a week later but, understood how the booking worked. The board explained that we
have signed contracts through 2020 to have the convention held at 7Springs. The dates will be March 16-19, 2016; March 8-11, 2017; March 7-10,
2018; March 6-9, 2019 and March 11-14, 2020. These dates will be posted on our website, facebook and other social media sites as well as printed
in our newsletter & advertised in Breakthrough Magazine & Taxidermy Today Magazine. The board discussed that we’ve been looking at other
locations on the East side however; cost and space have been the reasons we have not been able to move. A member discussed that
they have also been looking and agreed that there are not other locations that the association can fit or afford. Becky Snyder discussed the fees
of the Lancaster Host. The association would potentially have to pay at least $10,000 if we did not book a certain percentage of rooms. The other
concern was that if the vendors were to ship any supplies out to the Host prior to the convention a storage fee would be added on. The board
asked if anyone had other locations for us to look into to let us know, we are always looking at other facilities.
• Another member thought that the hands-on seminars were too expensive. Matt Zimmerman explained that the cost is based off a fee the
seminarian requests along with material that would be needed. Matt Zimmerman is going to look into others shows hands-on seminars to
compare how they are structured to see if any changes can be made. Another member said that Ray Hatfield’s form alteration seminar was great.
It was good for anyone who may have fears of altering forms. Another member said that Bryan Eppley had a good seminar and passed around
very nice eye reference casts. The board asked if anyone had any ideas for seminars or judges. A member asked Jason Krause for a bear seminar.
If anyone has any ideas to contact your local board member. If anyone has any suggestions for judges please contact your local board member,
they will be voted on at the June 6th Board of Directors meeting. Becky Snyder said this was the best group of judges thus far they all worked
well together and finished earlier than any other group has in the past.
• Bob Hutchinson asked the members if there was any interest in a summer picnic, there was no interest in the picnic.
• The Cabela’s Taxidermy Weekend show will be September 18th- 20th. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to see a particular seminar for
Cabela’s please reach out to Bill and Bridget Ward. A member addressed that pieces were removed prior to the 4pm time. The Board said that the
rule would be better enforced.
• Vince Spellane asked for volunteers. All of the committees could use more help.
• The vendors did great on donating material for the general raffle, if anyone has a chance please be sure to thank them. Ray Kowalski had
mentioned that one member won an item from Outlaw Skulls and the vendor was very willing to discuss the product and even trade it for a
different pattern that worked better for the member. Rod Connelly said that many vendors were saying this has been the best shows all year and
that Dan Rhinehart was almost sold out. Dan had mentioned that this was the most fun he has had in years and will be back next year.
• Help will be needed at noon to help tear down the vendor backboards in order to prepare the banquet room. The board asked that everyone
take a look at the prototype backboard we have been working on. One member who saw it at Cabelas asked if it can now fit in elevators. Matt
Zimmerman said yes, it had been shortened in order to fit. Mike Olszanowski has offered to donate his time to help build them once we get a
design finalized.
• This year’s membership as well as competition entries were down slightly, this isn't unexpected since it's a World Show year. John Czerniakowski
mentioned that the registration forms be on the website and made downloadable for members to fill out. Becky Snyder mentioned an idea that
after 4 or 5 pieces a discount be offered, the association couldn't afford to discount after any fewer pieces. Another member brought up how
judges are paid at other shows. The judge gets a flat fee for a preset number of pieces and then an extra $20 for each piece after that. They are
also paid for air fare and mileage for those close enough to drive. Currently we pay $500 Judging Fee + Expenses (Gas/Airfare) & $150 for
seminars.
• There was a discussion surrounding Big Rock funding a portion of the PA convention. The board provided information regarding the amount of
money that other vendors have been donating over the past 13 years to Head Quarters/Big Rock and have not heard back. One member
cautioned the board to look at other associations/organizations that Big Rock has made offers to and see how they have changed. The Board
does not want to lose the identity of the convention and this will be discussed if/when any offer is made from Big Rock.
• Bob Hutchinson continues to reach out to organizations such as SCI, RMEF, Trout Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and the National Wild Turkey
Foundations to obtain donations for the fund-raising mount/seminar. This year Jason Krause was able to get the Red Hartebeest donated.

Board of Directors Meeting
March 22, 2014 - 7Springs, PA
Board Members Present – Bob Hutchinson, Jason Krause, Jessica Simmons, Patti Czerniakowski, Rod Connelly, Dan Swanson, Joe Simmons, Vince Spellane, Tim
Jordan, Matt Zimmerman, Bill Ward, Rich Nagle
Board Members Absent – None
Guests – Becky & Dan Snyder, Amy Hutchinson, Ella Connelly, Lisa Flickinger, Dee Carley, Tim Barnes, Paul Czarnecki, John Czerniakowski
The meeting was called to order at 9:06am.
Follow-Up:
• John Czerniakowski presented the treasurer's report. John Czerniakowski had stated that this report will have the activity prior to him leaving for the
convention on Wednesday 3/18/15. The only concern brought up was that membership renewal and convention registration funds began to show up
later than past years. This could be contributed to the elimination of the membership drive letter. John Czerniakowski also wanted to thank Connie
Jordan who donated the children seminar payment back to the PTA. Jessica Simmons made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report - 2nd by Vince
Spellane - motion carried unanimously.
• The board discussed show issues. Vince Spellane would like to see different color badges for the vendors to quickly identify them since they are
permitted to view the competition room as well as enter the vendor area early.
• 7Springs is in the process of remodeling. This caused an issue with the doors in the vendor area not being locked. Once this was identified the doors
were dead bolted from the inside. Vince Spellane said that we need some additional volunteers as we do not have enough to be everywhere at one
time with the additional doors being added.
• John Czerniakowski brought up concerns about membership being down this year. He suggested that we send a reminder post card to membership.
The board discussed sending the additional mailing however; decided to ensure the Winter Review is sent out earlier. The Review was sent to all
licensed taxidermists not just PTA members. Additional information will also be posted on social media (Facebook) and Taxinet to ensure members
are aware to renew memberships and register for the convention.
• Bob Hutchinson and Tim Barnes had a member ask why if you enter a piece in the presidents’ cup it cannot be entered in any other category. Jason
Krause made a motion to not exclude President Cup entries from other categories as long as entry fees are paid for each category - 2nd by Vince
Spellane - motion carried unanimously.
• Becky Snyder reported that membership was down by 52, convention registration 16, banquet meals 34, for a total of $6680. The board discussed food
costs at warm up party. The soft pretzels cost $2819.20 and the nachos $4565.93. Paul Czarnecki said that the warm up party was intended to keep
members in the vendor area due to the restaurants not being in the facility in Altoona and at this facility that isn't an issue. The board is going to
discuss this further at the June 6, 2015 Board Meeting.
• Jason Krause would like to see the rule for Best All Round Taxidermist clarified. Jason Krause is going to look into clarifying the wording.
• Dee Carley discussed that not mailing out the membership drive letter may have cost the association members. Dee Carley made a suggestion that a
"Notice to Renew" page is added into the Review.
• The Board discussed the Cabela's Show and if eliminating the step down rule impacted the show. The board didn't feel that it did since the show was
always a wash. The Board discussed that Cabela's is a mini show and is a good starting point for new members and first time competitors. In order to
try and increase new membership's Bill Ward and Jason Krause are going to speak with Harold to see if Cabela's would be willing to sponsor new
Members Awards. Bill Ward and Jason Krause are going to talk to Harold to see if Cabela’s would be willing to sponsor new member awards. These
would be awarded to the highest scoring new member in Master, Professional, Amateur and Jr. Amateur divisions. This would encourage new
members to join.
• Ella Connelly discussed issues with the ballots and the lack of signage for the public. The ballot table will be moved into the competition room near
the exit doors with signs. There will also be a sign with a directional arrow at the top of the steps to direct the public.
• The board discussed that the Judges were not called up and recognized and thanked at the banquet. The Judges as well as the BOC winners will be
called up to be recognized and thanked at the banquet.
• Rod Connelly brought up the WCO was not asked to come up and present. The board discussed that if a presenter is in attendance they should be
called up. The presentations were a little off this year due to the technical difficulties that happened at the banquet. Becky Snyder brought up all of
the issues with the Go Team.
• The board discussed technical difficulties during the seminars with the cameras going
on standby and the banquet.
• Matt Zimmerman discussed that Mike Olszanowski is donating his time to help design
a new backboard as well as help build them. Mike Olszanowski is planning on having
777 Waterwheel Drive, Seven Springs, PA 15622
www.7springs.com / (800) 452-2223
a design drafted for the Cabela’s show.
• The board discussed having John Helm back as the photographer. The board will have
CONVENTION AND MEETING CENTER
John Helm back for the 2016 convention.
New Business:
• The board discussed seminar ideas for the 2016 convention as well as ideas for judges.
The board discussed the rule to only have one PA judge. This is becoming difficult due
to so many taxidermists signing contracts for sculpting and other commitments. Joe
Simmons made a motion to eliminate the one PA judge rule and make their best effort
to have diversified judges - 2nd by Jason Krause - motion carried unanimously.
• The board discussed the damage to the trailer. There was a scratch down the side.
There was no witness as to who caused the damage. Bob Hutchinson explained to
7Springs no one is to move or touch the trailer, only the PTA is permitted to do so. The
registration for the tailor is supposed to be sent to Becky Snyder, neither Bob Hutchinson nor Becky Snyder received the registration. Bob Hutchinson is going to contact
Angela Smouse to get a new one. Bob Hutchinson is also going to have the registration
sent to him to avoid this issue going forward.
• The board discussed that additional help is needed on Wednesday to set up the
backboards.
• The board discussed how the judges are paid and at this time there will not be any
changes made.
• Jessica Simmons made a motion to adjourn, the meeting was adjourned at 12:17pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
Jessica Simmons

APR • MAY • JUNE 2015
Dee Carley
My name is Delores
(Dee) Carley. I have 2 sons and 2
awesome granddaughters, one of which is hunting and
trapping and wants to help me in the taxidermy studio and
with my PTA work. She has harvested 3 deer, a bunch of
pheasants and has skinned and fleshed a few beavers
and coyotes. She is following in my footsteps.
My interest in taxidermy began in 1978 when friends
needed a partner to skin, flesh and stretch furs taken on
their trap line. I purchased the same JW Elwood mail order
course that many other old timers started with. In 1983 I
became licensed and quit my physical therapy aide/clerk
job to open a taxidermy studio
and sporting goods store with
an indoor archery range. I have
owned and operated Allegheny
Taxidermy for 31 years. My
favorite season is archery
season. Although I don’t hunt
much anymore (getting too old
to climb up into those tree
stands), I still love to fish. My
favorite hobby is gardening.
I believe my first taxidermy convention was in Wilkes
Barre. It took a few years before I was confident enough to
enter competition but I started winning ribbons with small
mammals and I was hooked. I haven’t missed a
convention since then.
Dick Nussbaumer was my first mentor
that encouraged me to get
involved in competition and
then the board of directors in
1993. I was elected as the
board secretary in 1994 and
stayed in that position through
1999. In 1999 I became the
PTA Membership Secretary/
Convention Registration and have been doing this since
then.
I have made some dear friends over the years and each
year I look forward to greeting everyone, old friends and
new members. Each year I am amazed at the creativity and
the excellent taxidermy that is entered in the competition. I
have learned so much from the seminars and met some
awesome people that I admire and respect. The PA
Taxidermy Association is the best thing to happen to me
and my taxidermy career.
I want to thank the PA Taxidermy Association and the
directors past and present for the education and for the
association well managed over the
years
to
become
the
great
organization that it is. I also want to
thank all members for the comradery
and the chance to experience their
talents through their artwork.

Each year I am amazed
at the creativity and the
