Traditionally a time for
giving, the Christmas spirit of
reaching out is alive and well
around the Port.
At the Wescott Carols on Friday
13th a group of local Stockton
children were happily handing
out bags of shortbread and
sweet delights to residents of
the aged care facility.
A lovely gesture in itself, the
true beauty lay in that the
children had saved their own
pocket money throughout the
year in order to buy the treats.
The goodwill felt by the
giftgiving was evident on the
faces of all, with one lady
commenting “isn’t it lovely to
see the children caring enough
to give back at Christmas”.
Also in the spirit for giving
Medowie Lions Club and Orica join forces to make
Xmas day brighter for those in need
were the Medowie Lions Club
and Orica who rolled out their
annual Christmas hampers for
families in need.
Usually a manual task
undertaken by Barry and helpers
at the Medowie Lions Club,
this year employees of Orica
assisted, packing 30 hampers
at the Stockton Senior Citizens
Association Hall in Mitchell
Street.
The hampers were then
distributed
to
families
nominated by the principals of
Stockton Public School, Fern
Bay Public School and St Peter’s
Primary School, Stockton.
The hamper program has been
a joint effort by Orica and the
Lions Club for over 25 years
and has become an annual
tradition.
Of the gesture, Orica General
Manager Greg Holmes said:
“The Medowie Lions Club is
passionate about supporting
the local community and I
am thankful that Orica can
collaborate with them for this
very worthwhile cause.”
The third gift of giving may
be a little further away than
the holiday season, however it
is the most ambitious of them
all, with local Ronnie Watts
preparing for a 14 day ride in
the Phillipines to raise money
for the victims of Typhoon
Haiyan via the Red Cross
campaign. Ronnie is of Filipino
heritage and has over 50 family
members in Tacloban who
were directly impacted by the
Ronnie Watts prepares for 14 day fundraising expedition
in the Phillipines to help Typhoon victims
devastating storm. Some of the
more unfortunate have no jobs
and no insurance for destroyed
homes with their lives being
changed forever.
The 300 km trip scheduled
for March next year will be
Ronnie’s first major cycling
expedition, however he is not
adverse to adventure, having
completed and a Himalayan trek
across Bhutan to the Tibetan
border and back in the past.
The goal is to raise $10,000,
enough money Ronnie says to
“buy clean water kits for 80
families, essential household
supplies, such as cooking pots
and bedding for 30 families,
family hygiene kits for 30
families, 100 tarpaulins to help
make temporary shelters, food
for 30 families for 2 weeks, and
after that, still have over $2000
remaining to support Red Cross
longer term programs in the
affected areas.”
Paying his own way and using
his personal leave Ronnie has
already raised a commendable
$2,778.
Of the trip Ronnie says he also
wants to “include locals in some
way and have them be a part of
a fundraiser that benefits their
region. I’m thinking of getting
maybe a local tour guide or bike
shop owner or someone similar
involved because it will help
them get back on their feet.”

There isn’t much room left this
issue, so I will keep it short ;-)
As the paper sees in it’s second
Christmas, I can’t help but think

I was born in Stockton in 1951
and have lived in Fern Bay
nearly all my life. I was here
when Stockton Bridge was built.
The original bridge and road
design did what your article
suggests.
When you head west down
Stockton Bridge and over the
coal conveyors you can see the
easement across the island for
the road. There was not supposed
to be an intersection at Stockton
bridge. The turn off to and from
Stockton was supposed to weave
around and go under the bridge.
The four lane road was supposed
to go across Kooragang, across
the back of the BHP dump and
join up with the future inner city
bypass at Sandgate.
Here we are over 40 years later
and nothing has been completed.

TULLY, COCO & WIL SHARPEN THEIR PENCILS
For 25 years, the Newcastle
Herald has been encouraging the
creative talents of the students
via their School Newspaper
Competition.
Such is the popularity of the
competition that this year the
Herald reported more than
300 students from 96 schools
entered. Amongst the hopefuls
were three local students.
Winning the category for Best
Editorial were Tully Collison
and Coco Tindall from Fern Bay
Primary School whilst Wil Nott
of Newcastle East primary was
highly commended in the Best
Cartoon category.
Selecting the highly topical and
relevant subject of the Tourle
Street Bridge, with their piece
“Tourle Street now One Bridge
Too Far”, Tully and Coco
embraced the editorial role not
holding back any punches by
articulating what many of us
think, the situation is “one of the
biggest mistakes that has been
planned by a government for a
long time”.
In the budget handed down
on 16th Decemeber the Federal
Goverment finally committed
to funding a further upgrade
of the Bridge and Cormoranrt
Drive, however considering
other (more sensible?) options
(such as a direct connection on
to Industrial Drive) appear to
have been overlooked, it seems
that Tully and Coco hit showed
maturity beyond their years by
ending their piece with this...
....“We are very lucky that
planners in the past had the
vision to build the Stockton
Bridge” ...”It is a shame that the
planners and governments of
today, or even a few years ago,
didn’t have the foresight of those
back in 1971 in looking to the
future instead of trying to replace
something that was already out
of date”.

TENDERS OPEN
FOR CLOCK TOWER
City Hall, one of Newcastle’s most prestigious
and recognisable buildings, is set to turn back
time with tenders being released for the repair
of the façade of the magnificent clock tower.
Lord Mayor Jeff McLoy says Newcastle City
Hall is one of our most important buildings and
the restoration of the sandstone façade should
be a priority for all levels of
government.
Following on from a successful
trial restoration in 2010, Council
has been planning exterior
restoration works to City Hall
which are all part of the City Hall
Conservation Management Plan.
It will be business as usual in
City Hall while the works are
completed. Scaffolding will
be erected on the exterior of
the building however minimal
impact is expected for events
booked at the historic site.
Council’s last audit revealed
that there was an estimated
$112,753,000
expenditure
required to bring all of Council’s
assets up to a satisfactory
standard. Council in recent years
has identified the requirement to
upgrade its assets and as a result
has significantly increased annual
expenditure on these items.
Council's 10 Year Strategic Plan
identified the need to increase
borrowings as a source of funds
to do this.
The biggest asset class requiring
attention is “buildings and
structures” with the biggest item
on this list the City Hall. The
most critical City Hall element
in need of renewal is the Clock

UNI GAMES
It was announced last week
that in July 2014, Newcastle
will host approximately 3,000
university and TAFE students
from New South Wales and the
ACT, as they take part in 17
different sports over four days
of competition.
Sports on offer are expected
to include AFL 9s, basketball,
football, futsal, golf – singles,
hockey, indoor cricket, lawn
bowls, netball, oztag, squash
– singles, surfing (also held as
national championship), tennis
– singles, tenpin bowling, touch,
ultimate and volleyball.
It is estimated that the games
will generate around $1
million in economic benefit
for the local Newcastle
economy with significant
business opportunities for
accommodation,
transport
and hospitality operators.

The funding support is a 4% interest subsidy on
borrowings for the project. The subsidy results in
a significant cost saving for The City of Newcastle
by reducing the amount of interest paid.

We held our final monthly
meeting of the year on Tuesday
last when we discussed our
plans for 2014.
Afterwards we adjourned to the
dining room of the Stockton
RSL & Citizens Club where
we partook of a scrumptious
lunch prepared by the chef and
his helpers. It is always good
to relax after all the business is
dealt with!!
Our Program Officer, Moira
has asked Vicki Matthew of
Westcott to speak at our next
meeting in February about
the nursing and health care
provided by the home. Anyone
interested in this topic is
welcome to come.
We hold our meetings every
second Tuesday of the month
in the Willcox Room at the
Stockton RSL & Citizens Club

The Stockton Happy Travellers
group has had an exciting year
with all the social outings we
have had! On Friday 29th of
November, 45 members went
on a three hour twilight dinner
cruise
around
Newcastle
harbour, and the night was
enjoyed by all who attended.
We had great company, great
food and many danced away
the hours. The last outing
for 2013 was held on the 6th
of December, with a coach
tour to see the spectacular
and awe inspiring Christmas
lights display at Hunter Valley
Gardens and dinner at the
Neath hotel. A big thank you
to the members for supporting
the Stockton Happy Travellers
Group with donations and for
lending a helping hand when
needed throughout the first
year of operations. On behalf of

The last function for the VIEW club for 2013 was the Christmas luncheon held at the R.S.L.club on
Tuesday 11th December.President Leslie introduced Robin Bosche who is the National Counsellor
who wished us well for the coming year.Robin then had the pleasing job of presenting long serving
members Norma Edward and Verle Gilson with patron’s badges.Norma has been a member of the club
since 12 July 1972 and Verle joined on the 12 May 1976.I am sure everybody was happy and surprised
and we all congratulate them and wish them well. After a very nice lunch we were entertained by the C
Change Duo from Nelson Bay who played and sang some older songs that everyone could sing along

Presentation Night was held
on Sat.16th Nov. Although
the attendance was a little
disappointing those present
were entertained by the Mens
Club President, Peter Walsh,
who was MC, with his unique
brand of humour, when
presenting the Championship
awards. A very popular “Club
Person of the Year” award was
presented to Peter Bland who
does more than his fair share
of work at the Club during the
year. Peter’s acceptance speech
was unusually brief. DJ Symon
entertained those present with
some easy listening music
following the presentations.

AGM also on Sat. 16th Nov.
and it was voted to continue

By the time this report goes
to air (so to speak) some vey
important decisions concerning
our forty year old social bowls
club will have been addressed
and it is expected to conduct
a final meeting after our next
lot of visitors. Lemon Tree
Passage will visit on Sunday

. LTP offered a great luncheon
and home-made slices when
we visited them - we will try to
reciprocate in a like manner although our members will not
be required to cook slices. LTP
were a new name added to our
list and actually it is their first
and possibly their last visit.
In days gone by - The coach was
always full with a waiting list.
Unfortunately disappointment
for some who were unable to
attend those enjoyable days
out. We had very supportive
members over the years remember the Baileys who did
all the catering. Remember the
home- made pickles and other
condiments for us to choose by
way of enhancing our barbiestruly a family event. The club
advanced from men only to men
& women’s games played on
separate greens, then eventually
to mixed games. Life-long
friendships have developed
from our inter-club visits. The
first thing we do is seek out our
visiting friends. Other clubs
have expressed hardship and
cost-cutting problems as well as
health problems in continuing
entertaining their visitors. Our
sister club Toronto (our friends
Stan & his wife) are battling
and Morisset Club - remember
the great hospitality in the main
building - Morisset is privately
owned now and those who
welcome visitors are relegated
to ‘the Hut’ and no professional
catering provided. They still
manage to serve us a tasty meal
- but makes them busy-busybusy. Bowling in general is
experiencing changes.
Speaking of last visits - thank
you Ron Harrison for your
assistance over the years as a
committee member and Bob
McIlwraith, Neville Shearman
and others.

members are hard to replace
- the club does not have a
Secretary & no Lady President
- at this point in time. Jennifer
Sinclair, Vicki Goodwin and
Tony, Vicki Marshall, Denise
Quinlan, just to name a few
have indicated they are unable
to continue with the club-others
are stricken by illness and other
more able players who have
risen in the bowling world are
fully-booked with competitive
bowling-which seems to take
up every spare space on the
calendar these days. We even
need to compete for the green
at times. Heather Cole & Ken
are moving away. Heather
will continue her association
with the club whilst ever it is
functional.

Recently a member of the Stockton Community Action Group and I had a discussion about the
possibilities to freshen up Mitchell Street to give it a little more well shall we say....“street appeal”. I
always feel a tinge of envy when I drive through Carrington’s tree lined Young Street, with it’s elegant
village feel and after a good talking to myself, I decided I should stop going green and set about
putting my time into gathering ideas from the community. A round of funding becomes available in
February, so a small group will be needed to help gauge user preferences for design practicality and
aesthetics and to prepare documentation. If you can say yes to one or all of the following and would
like to be involved in this ‘scoping’ exercise then please email [email protected]. With the
timeframe so short and the silly season in the way, there may be time for two meetings (dates to be
announced in the first issue of 2014) so all are urged to come along. Ideas will be collected in writing
with a short time for positive discussion about needs and wants allocated.

COURT RULING

The Land and Environment
Court has this week handed
down its decision on Newcastle
Port Corporation’s prosecution
of the owner of the MV
Magdalene.
The court imposed a $1.2
million fine on the owner of the
vessel. This is the largest fine
imposed upon a defendant for a
breach of the Marine Pollution
Act 1987 (NSW).
The prosecution related to an
oil spill in the Port of Newcastle
on 25 August 2010.
At the time of the spill, NPC
engaged in an extensive clean
up operation and undertook an
investigation of the incident.
The Court’s decision highlights
the seriousness of marine
pollution incidents. Shame the
oyster operators in the area
didn’t get a financial result. -ed
Hunter Water to sell HQ
In order to fund an upgrade to the Burwood beach wastewater
treatment plant, Hunter water have proposed to sell their
Honeysuckle Headquarters. Proceeds from the sale will be
combined with recent sales of properties around the now shelved
Tillegra Dam project to and Hunter Water will have a 10-year lease
with an option for a further five years.
A Hunter Water spokesperson said they intend to remain in the
building for the full 10 years.
