SOUTH
AFRICA
Africa
A LAND OF COLOUR AND CONTRASTS. DEEP RED SKIES, DAZZLING WHITE SANDS AND
CLEAR BLUE WATERS; CHIC CITIES AND THRILLING SAFARI ENCOUNTERS – AFRICA STIRS
THE SENSES AND THE SOUL.
South Africa
An intensely beautiful land of spiritual adventures. Sundowners on
safari capture the very essence of the bush, where the Big Five, and
countless other exotic species, roam the grassy savannas and the endless
night skies reveal a host of constellations. Travel the Wine and Garden
Routes or admire the ever-changing landscapes from the comfort of
a luxurious train. On the Atlantic coast, Cape Town is bursting with
energy and whales bask off the rugged shores.
Zimbabwe
UNESCO World Heritage Sites abound in this beguiling country, with
its enigmatic mix of colonial heritage, pristine landscapes and remote
safari camps which bring an opportunity to experience nature at its
thrilling, enthralling best.
Zambia & Malawi
From walking safaris in the South Luangwa to exhilarating boat trips
down the Zambezi, Zambia’s experiences are exciting and diverse.
Observe a rich diversity of game at close quarters disturbed only by the
sounds of nature or capture a bird’s eye view of the breathtaking Victoria
Falls from a helicopter. In neighbouring Malawi, dive in the crystal clear
waters of the lake and relax on sandy beaches.
Botswana
Unique and varied safari experiences await in this land of quiet
waterways, hidden channels, dry deserts and game-rich national parks.
Spreading out over the Kalahari sandveld, the Okavango Delta literally
teems with life, ready to be discovered by land or by boat. Expeditions
through the Makgadikagdi pans reveal unique desert species and
habituated colonies of meerkats.
Namibia
Namibia’s vast and dramatic landscapes linger long in the memory.
The burnt reds and oranges of Sossusvlei’s dunes…the miles of deserted
coastline peppered by shipwrecks and colonies of seals…Damaraland’s
rocky expanses roamed by ancient nomadic tribes…this land is immense,
unspoilt and unforgettable.
air is sweet and cool. One of the most endangered species in the world,
the gorillas are remarkably tolerant of human presence, enabling close
encounters that stay forever etched in the memory. Elsewhere, chimps
and a host of different species of primates inhabit the ancient forests.
Truly moving, utterly magical.
Kenya
Tanzania & Zanzibar
Kenya lives and breathes the classic safari experience. The arid scenery
of the north gives way to the vast rolling grasslands of the Masai Mara
with its large prides of lion, a perfect setting for the greatest wildlife
show on earth, the Great Migration. Visit the soda lakes of the Rift
Valley and retreat to a beachfront banda on the Swahili Coast.
Rwanda & Uganda
There is little to compare with the experience of observing Silverback
mountain gorillas amongst densely forested slopes where the mountain
Exceptional lodges and camps enhance the romance of safari in a
country bursting with wildlife from the Serengeti and Lake Manyara
to the Ngorongoro Crater. Game drives, bush walks and hot air balloon
expeditions add to the excitement, whilst the delights of Stone Town and
a handful of sumptuous Indian Ocean beach resorts promise indulgent
relaxation on the spice island of Zanzibar.

INTENSELY WILD AND EXHILARATING, THIS SOUL STIRRING
COUNTRY COMBINES THE CLASSIC SAFARI EXPERIENCE WITH
TRANQUIL EXPLORATIONS AMIDST BREATHTAKING SCENERY.
A land that stirs the senses and the soul…a true ‘Rainbow Nation’…beautiful, vibrant and alive.
Unmatched for its colourful diversity, it is a country that positively celebrates life in the great outdoors –
a place for spotting the Big Five, followed by campfire sundowners in the bush or the luxurious comfort of
a wilderness lodge. Magnificent mountains tumble down to the white sand beaches of the Garden Route,
Southern Right whales bask offshore whilst anglers on the game fishing boats pit their strength against
barracuda, sailfish and swordfish. Inland, in the fertile valleys of the Winelands, there are picnics to be
enjoyed on the lawns of the Cape Dutch homesteads, finest wines to savour in Stellenbosch and gourmet
cuisine to delight the palate in Franschhoek. Near Nelspruit huge stalactites grow in dripping caves; in the
towering Drakensberg Mountains the Blyde River Canyon slices a path seven hundred metres deep. The
views are spectacular too, from the top of Table Mountain, high above Cape Town where lively modern
malls vie for attention with the cobbled lanes and brightly coloured houses of the quaint Malay Quarter.
Excitement rides high in South Africa’s exceptional game reserves, an early wake up call signalling prime
viewing time. Lions on the prowl. A leopard lying outstretched on the limb of a tree. A rhino with an
oxpecker perched on his back…each day ending with a kaleidoscope of sunset blues, pinks and purples.
Intensely beautiful and intensely wild, South Africa is the most spiritual of adventures.

Our Pricing

*
*
*
*
*
Our pricing aims to give an indication of the price range from low to
high season. Low season for South Africa is generally between the
months of May to September, high season runs from mid December
to Easter. Supplements may apply to peak periods such as Christmas
and Easter. Prices are per person per night based on 2 sharing (unless
otherwise indicated) and itinerary prices include return economy
flights from London. Regional departures and single supplements are
available on request. Accommodation only prices do not include flights.
Where prices for our lodges/camps are shown as fully inclusive this
generally includes all food and drinks but in most cases will exclude
certain premium branded spirits, premium wines and Champagne. Date
restrictions, terms and conditions apply to our special offers, please call
for details.
Ascend Table Mountain in the early morning and watch the mists rise over Cape Town
Spot whales close to the shores around Hermanus and Walker Bay
The first glimpse of a big cat on safari
The incredible stars and the intensified sounds of the bush at night
Dine by lantern light in the heart of the bush
Observe meerkat interactions in the Kalahari
When To Go
A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and
Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga
stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all
increasing in the summer months between October and March. The
whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November,
and the spring months of August and September are particularly
colourful along the Garden Route. The prime time for game viewing is
generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September
when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer
months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are
more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more
sightings of newborn animals.

South Africa In Depth

For panoramic vistas of the bustling port of Durban ride the Moses
Mabhida Stadium SkyCar as it ascends the stadium arch, before
alighting to explore the city’s Indian Quarter, renowned for its curries.
Inland, there are more breathtaking views to behold in the Valley
of a Thousand Hills and along the Midlands Meander, a signposted
series of routes designed to showcase the region’s wealth of traditional
arts, crafts and cuisine. Take a helicopter ride over the Drakensberg
Mountains, explore by mountain bike, horseback or on a thrilling
canopy tour. Relive the dramatic Anglo-Zulu battles at the atmospheric
battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. Furthermore there are
Big Five game reserves to explore and, seasonally, leatherback turtles
to be seen in the St. Lucia Wetlands Reserve.
where safari houses are available to families for their exclusive use.
Honeymooners will enjoy the privacy of a luxurious suite with plunge
pool overlooking the Africa bush. Our extensive safari collection begins

Travel Further Afield
Holidays in South Africa can be easily extended to include stays in
neighbouring countries. Our sales team will be happy to advise on
combinations including a self-drive adventure around Namibia, a
contrasting safari experience in Botswana or a thrilling few days
at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Direct flights ensure that the sandy
beaches of Mauritius are within easy reach.
Safari In South Africa
Few experiences are more rewarding than watching wild animals
in their natural environment, free to move and interact as nature
intended. A safari in South Africa promises a memorable and emotive
holiday for adults and children alike. Age restrictions vary from lodge
to lodge, though we are happy to advise on those with specially adapted
programmes for younger children, malaria free areas and lodges
Cape Town And Surrounds
The Western Cape
Consistently ranked amongst the world’s top cities, Cape Town is
South Africa’s most culturally and visually diverse city. Spreading out
below Table Mountain, with architecture encompassing the ice cream
coloured Cape Malay houses of the Bo-Kaap, 21st century design and
a rich Dutch and British colonial heritage, its attractions include the
vibrant designer shopping malls of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront,
flower and craft markets, a wealth of museums and excursions to
Robben Island. Relax on the magnificent beaches of Camps Bay and
Clifton, swim with penguins at Boulders Beach and sip sundowners
after a trip around the Cape Peninsula by yacht, helicopter or Harley
Davidson. The nature trails of Cape Point and the vineyards of
Constantia Valley provide further recreation.
A wines-to-whales escape awaits in the Western Cape. Not only
are the areas around Gansbaai and Hermanus populated with wine
estates, they are also famed for being the Great White Shark Capital
of the World, with shark cage diving a popular pursuit. From July to
November there is an opportunity to witness Southern Right whales as
they gather to give birth to their young just offshore; penguin colonies
can be viewed at Dyer Island or Stony Point. North of Cape Town in
the Cederberg Mountains, named after the ancient cedars which grow
there, visit South Africa’s highest vineyards and see the beguiling rock
art sites around Bushmans Kloof.
The Winelands
A prime destination for lovers of good food and wine, the Winelands
offer the opportunity to tour the vineyards with a chauffeur guide,
to join wine safaris or even experience wine tasting by Segway or
on horseback. Stellenbosch, South Africa’s oldest university town
with its quaint shops and art galleries, also offers chocolate and wine
tasting tours along with the chance to label your own bottles, whilst
the gourmet destination of Franschhoek has a wine tram. Visit South
Africa’s largest free-flying park for butterflies at Paarl, also the site of a
Mountain Reserve rich in birdlife.
The Garden Route
Stretching from Mossel Bay to Nature’s Valley, the natural beauty of
the Garden Route is unsurpassed. Travellers can appreciate diverse
vegetation, tranquil lagoons, immense forests, dramatic mountains
and invigorating coastal hiking trails. Knysna is home to South
Africa’s largest commercial oyster farming operation and hosts an
oyster festival each July. At Oudtshoorn, explore the Cango Caves,
visit an ostrich farm and see meerkats at play; Plettenberg Bay’s blue
flag beaches hug the coast whilst inland activities include golf, polo
and the Plett Wine Route for a taste of the Méthode Cap Classique
sparkling wines. For scenic hikes and thrilling canopy tours head for
Tsitsikamma Forest.

Love South Africa
Uthando (Love) South Africa is an award winning, unique and
innovative Non Profit and Fair Trade certified company, created to
raise funds and other forms of assistance for community development
projects in Cape Town and South Africa. The projects are many and
varied, with the aim of providing assistance to South Africa’s most
disadvantaged communities, both through financial support and the
development of new, life-enhancing skills.
In Cape Town’s Khayelitsha township, Abalimi Bezekhaya is a
community farming project that supplies fresh, organic vegetables
– the Abalimi Bezekhaya salad is a regular dish on the menu at Cape
Town’s Mount Nelson hotel; the Mdzananda Animal Clinic provides
much needed veterinary care and treatment to the many animals
living as household pets in the township. Just outside Cape Town, the
Hout Bay Music Project teaches around sixty disadvantaged children
how to play string instruments as well as lessons in drumming and
singing; Dance for All uses the powerful medium of dance to promote
self esteem, empowerment and enjoyment amongst children. These
projects, and many more, receive help and support from Uthando.
Visitors to Cape Town may like to take a unique tour to visit some of
Uthando’s projects – the tours are authentic, non-invasive, respectful
and beneficial to the communities visited.
Carrier is committed to charitable work, and is delighted to support
the Uthando project. A donation will be made on every Carrier holiday
booked to Africa. For more information, please visit their website at
www.uthandosa.org to find out how you can get involved
in the projects, or make any further contributions.

South Africa ~ Safari
Safari In Depth
Sabi Sands, Thornybush & Kruger National Park
KwaZulu-Natal
Sabi Sands, South Africa’s oldest and most successful private reserve,
is traversed by two separate river systems, the Sand River and the
Sabie River, attracting safari aficionados from far and wide with
its abundance of Big Five game and endangered species, including
wild dog. The reserve flows into the 19,485 square kilometre Kruger
National Park, one of the largest parks in Africa spanning the provinces
of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. Bordering Kruger is Thornybush, an
immense stretch of open savannah harbouring almost 150 species of
mammal – leopard and lion to name but two.
Phinda Private Game Reserve presents Big Five game viewing in a
unique setting, the coastal rainfall creating seven distinct ecosystems
that attract a wide range of species. The landscape encompasses
grassland, woodland, wetland, mountains and marshes, including rare
dry sand forest, home to the tiny suni and red duiker antelopes. Black
rhino and cheetah may also be encountered. Nearby Sodwana offers
turtle watching, scuba diving and fishing. Specialist safaris can also
be arranged.
Madikwe Game Reserve
Distinguished by dramatic mountains and scenic landscapes dotted
with massive baobab trees, the Waterberg region in Limpopo Province
sustains Africa’s widest variety of flora and fauna, including over 300
species of resident and migrant birds. Safari by vehicle or horseback,
journeying alongside giraffe, zebra or the many species of antelope,
including the rarely-seen sable.
Massive volcanic intrusions, wide open plains and riverine habitats
define Madikwe, a malaria free area on the Botswana border. Scores
of mammals including the Big Five and a thriving wild dog population
may be found in the reserve, with resident and migrant bird species
numbering over three hundred. Steeped in legend, Madikwe has a
history dating back to the Stone Age.
Eastern Cape
Within easy reach of Port Elizabeth airport, the malaria free reserves
of the Eastern Cape combine perfectly with a tour along the Garden
Route. At Kwandwe, historic Big Five safaris can be combined with
visits to San Bushman rock art sites and tours of local forts. Not to be
missed is the Born Free Foundation’s wildlife rehabilitation centre at
Shamwari. Families are expertly catered for with exclusive-use lodges
and a host of activities for younger ones.
The Waterberg
Southern Kalahari
Ancestral home of the San People, famed for their bush art, the
Southern Kalahari is the setting for Tswalu, one of the world’s top
malaria free eco reserves where black-maned Kalahari lions roam and
colonies of playful meerkats can be observed at close quarters. Track
desert black rhino and rare roan, sable and tsessebe before sleeping out
under night skies that rank amongst the planet’s clearest and darkest.

INFINITELY THRILLING AND IRREPRESSIBLY FRIENDLY, ZIMBABWE
IS A LAND BEJEWELLED WITH DRAMATIC LANDSCAPES,
THUNDERING FALLS AND WILDLIFE RICH PLAINS WHERE NATURE
HAS NEVER FELT CLOSER.
A land to stir the heart and soul, Zimbabwe exceeds expectations many times over. Suffused with
colour and rich in culture its terrain encompasses endless plains dissected by majestic rivers, soaring
granite kopjes, forested valleys and stretches of absolute wilderness. Sheer remoteness adds to the
adventure, rising in the misty dawn to feel closer to nature than you could ever dream. In Hwange
National Park elephant wander through the encampments, congregating in their hundreds by the
water holes, whilst the blazing sunsets at Mana Pools are accompanied by the grunting of hippo as
they wallow in the waters of the mighty Zambezi. There are predators at large too – harder to find yet
supremely rewarding when spotted – adult lion and their cubs feasting on the night’s kill; a cheetah
stalking her prey. What better way to follow the exhilaration and exertions of a safari than with a
relaxing river cruise or to sit looking down on Lake Kariba with its skeleton-like semi-submerged
trees and abundance of antelope. And yet, Zimbabwe has not played its trump card. A distant thunder
grows closer. A curtain of shimmering vapour rises ahead. Victoria Falls announces its presence, and
the zip-wire riding, white water rafting, adrenalin pumping fun has just begun.

The dry winter months between May and October are generally the best
months for game viewing as the grass is lower, the vegetation less dense
and the animals are driven to the waterholes to quench their thirst.
Temperatures are hot during the day but can drop significantly at night,
even falling below zero in Hwange. Daytime temperatures in October
can be exceptionally high. The rainy season is usually from December to
March, with beautiful, green landscapes. Victoria Falls are at their most
dramatic from March to May, though the mist created by such a volume
of water can obscure the views.
Fly across Victoria Falls gorge on a zip-wire
Picnic by a waterhole with hundreds of elephants in Hwange
Catch a spectacular bird’s eye view of the Falls from a private plane
Climb up Matobo’s granite kopjes for an incredible 360 degree view
Watch elephant families at close quarters as they wander through camp
Capture an amazing African sunset punctuated by Lake Kariba’s submerged skeleton trees

Victoria Falls
Aptly known as ‘the smoke that thunders’, and twice the height of
Niagara Falls, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the Seven
Wonders of the World. Discovered by David Livingstone in 1855, the
Falls stretch for 1.7 kilometres across the Zambezi River between
Zimbabwe and Zambia and comprise five different cataracts, four of
them in Zimbabwe. During the peak flow months of February to April
spray typically rises 400 metres into the air, with night time lunar
rainbows visible during a full moon. A Rovos Rail destination, the Falls
are also a centre for adventure activities such as gorge swings and white
water rafting, as well as sundowner river cruises and game drives in the
national park.
Hwange National Park
Rarely crowded due to its enormity, Zimbabwe’s largest and oldest
national park protects one of the world’s largest concentrations of
elephant and buffalo and is home to more than 400 species of birds.
Once a royal hunting ground its terrain is largely woodland and open
savannah, sprinkled with waterholes to which the animals are drawn
during the dry June-to-October winter months.
Lake Kariba
Formed when the mighty Zambezi was dammed in the late 1950s, Lake
Kariba promises a tranquil escape, sipping sundowners during cruises
across its strikingly blue waters from which rise the famous
half-submerged mopane trees. Bird watching and boat-based game
viewing are the principal pastimes – hippo inhabiting the lagoons and
elephants splashing in the shallows. When the dam was created,
Operation Noah removed much local wildlife to the reserves along the
shore – game drives and walks are offered in Matusadona National Park.
Mana Pools
Meaning ‘four’ in the local Shona language, mana describes the four
large pools inland from the Zambezi River which form a magnet for
an abundance of birdlife, mammals and reptiles. Elephant are drawn
to the riverbanks in the dry season; expect also to see crocodile, lion,
leopard, cheetah and spotted hyena. Join guided walking safaris, game
drives through the acacia woodlands and canoeing expeditions, or relax
with a spot of river fishing. At night, the sound of hippos grunting is
simply magical.
Malilangwe Private Wildlife Reserve
Distinguished by varied terrain encompassing mopane forests, baobab
trees, grassy plains and rocky hills, this Big Five game reserve has set
aside 135,000 acres solely for Singita guests. The reserve’s special focus
is the reintroduction of black and white rhino – a programme bringing
substantial increases to both populations. Further recreations include
fishing, mountain biking, sunset cruises on the dam and visits to San
rock art sites.

SIMPLY EVERYTHING IS AWE INSPIRING, FROM THE TUMULTUOUS
HERDS OF WILDLIFE, TO THE ASTONISHING CATARACT KNOWN TO
THE LOCALS AS THE ‘SMOKE THAT THUNDERS’.
A walking safari in the South Luangwa will stir the soul. Wake early to zip open the tent and breathe
in the scent of wild sage, stepping out in the wilderness where hippos, elephants and crocodiles
congregate in the river’s oxbow lagoons and open sandbanks. It is a thrill to spot the first lion out on
the Busanga Plains, which stretch as far as the eye can see. Here, on this vast expanse of grasslands
and giant fig trees, are herds of tsessebe, hartebeest, zebra and buffalo. Golden brown lechwe sprint
across marshes; thousands of sandy puku antelope fill the horizon. After the game drive, head back to
camp and star gaze on beanbags sipping Amarula, lost for words as you gaze at the incredible African
sky. When the hot and dusty safari is done, the yearning for crystal clear water leads to Lake Malawi
where blissful relaxation beckons under swaying palms and romantically furnished cottages hint at a
peaceful, almost bohemian way of life. Lazy days may be followed by tranquil sundowners on board a
traditional dhow, finishing with a feast of freshly caught fish flavoured with exotic spices.

Victoria Falls Zambia
The National Park of Mosi oa Tunya, meaning smoke that thunders,
lies along the upper Zambezi River. From vantage points such as knifeedge bridge and the lookout tree visitors can enjoy magnificent views
of the eastern cataract including the Boiling Pot, Devil’s Pool and the
main falls. Take afternoon tea on Livingstone Island by the edge of the
falls, join a Zambezi cruise or explore Livingstone town, a centre for
adventure activities.
South Luangwa
With visits particularly recommended during the dry season from April
to October, South Luangwa National Park boasts an exceptionally
high concentration of hippo, zebra and antelope, together with a huge
variety of bird species – over 400 at the last count. The Luangwa River
is the most intact major river system in Africa, and when in full flow
boat safaris are popular. Walking safaris are a speciality, bringing the
opportunity to see the unique wildlife at close quarters.
Lower Zambezi
This less developed part of the Zambezi offers a pure wilderness
experience based in comfortable lodges set directly on the riverfront.
June to September brings heightened opportunities to view the
abundant wildlife, especially elephant, lion, leopard and bird species
such as Bee Eaters and Fish Eagle. Fishing aficionados will appreciate
the myriad species along this stretch of the river, including Vundu,
Bream and the legendary Tiger Fish – September/October being the
prime fishing period.
Kafue
Zambia’s oldest and largest National Park accommodates visitors in
remote camps and lodges in unspoilt habitats known for their diversity
of wildlife. The park has an exceptionally large concentration of lions,
leopards, wild dog and abundant birdlife. Sightings are possible of
elusive species of wildebeest and antelope rarely found elsewhere in
southern Africa. Take the opportunity to enjoy a hot air balloon safari
over the dramatic landscape of wetlands and vast plains below.
Lake Malawi
The third largest lake in Africa, the ‘calendar lake’ reaches for three
hundred and sixty five miles into Mozambique, extending south from
its origins in the Great Rift Valley. Its dazzling bright waters are a
haven for sailors, windsurfers and kayakers whilst snorkellers and
divers will revel in the clear waters teeming with marine life. Lazy
days spent relaxing on the golden sands which fringe the shores can be
followed by sundowners aboard a traditional dhow.

ABUNDANT WILDLIFE, WATERY DELTAS, DRY DESERT SALT PANS
AND ULTRA-CHIC BUSH SANCTUARIES – BOTSWANA’S UNRIVALLED
WILDERNESS AWAITS.
Punt silently along Botswana’s picturesque waterways in a dugout canoe, past swaying reeds and tall
grasses. This placid wilderness of lagoons, grassland and flooded plains is home to huge numbers of
birds and animals, including hippos wallowing in deep channels and the largest concentration of
elephants in Africa. On an island at the heart of the Okavango Delta lies the Moremi Game Reserve,
boasting a range of eco-systems from grassland and woodland to waterside. In the Kalahari, vultures
soar on the thermals, looking down on the Makgadikgadi with its mile upon mile of shimmering white
salt pans stretching endlessly to the horizon, its sandy expanses holding only a peppering of
thornbush and the odd sighting of meerkat, mongoose and hyena. This is the territory of the huntergatherer San people with their clicking tongues, wide grins and jovial spirits. Quad bikes provide an
exciting way to discover the dusty pans. Venture into Chobe National Park where the wetlands and
waterways are alive with hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds, buffalos, big cats and more. For more
leisurely wildlife viewing, take a river cruise on board a luxurious houseboat on the Upper Zambezi,
where the river is broad and languid. Botswana is wilderness as it should be, unspoilt and unsurpassed.

When To Go

The best time to visit Botswana for game viewing in the delta areas is
during the dry winter season from April to October when animals are
drawn to water sources. Days are warm and sunny although nights can
drop below freezing – in October temperatures can be particularly hot.
The Okavango area tends to be more moderate than the Kalahari where
seasonal differences are more extreme and activities vary according to
wet (November – March) and dry (April – October) seasons.
Participate in elephant conservation first-hand and enjoy interaction with a resident herd
Go game viewing by mokoro canoe for a unique, ground-level perspective
Observe colonies of habituated meerkat at close quarters
Ride on horseback through the delta channels

Chobe National Park
Named after the Chobe River, the Park has lush floodplains which
attract a thrilling array of wild animals and birds. The world’s largest
concentration of elephants can be found here, Cape Buffalo roam in
large numbers and game drives frequently bring viewings of giraffe,
lion and leopard. Due to its proximity to Victoria Falls, the park makes
the ideal combination with Zambia or Zimbabwe. Take sundowners
whilst gently cruising the river – the perfect way to end the day.
Linyanti
Tucked away in the north western corner of Chobe National Park,
Linyanti’s riverine woodlands, lagoons and flood plains provide the
perfect habitat for large concentrations of zebra, sable and giraffe –
leopard are common in the woodlands whilst lion, wild dog and hyena
prowl the grasslands. Game drives depart both day and night from
many of the camps; bird watchers can spot a glorious variety of species
in the reed and papyrus swamps.
Okavango Delta
The lattice of islands, channels and lagoons that form the Okavango
Delta extend over 15,000 square kilometres with less than 2 metres
variation in height across the expanse. This idyllic habitat supports
150 species of mammals and over 500 species of birds, mokoro canoe
safaris offer a unique perspective. Waters drained from the Angola
highlands fill the delta from April to October and shrink to shallow
pools in winter. Water and land based activities can be enjoyed
dependent on water levels and the camp location. Dry camps offer
land only activities, whilst combination camps enjoy both water and
land adventures.
Kalahari
From quad biking in the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans to joining walks
guided by local bushmen as they follow footprints across the terrain,
the Central Kalahari Game Reserve offers a wealth of exceptional
attractions. The second largest game reserve in the world, it comprises
bush and grasslands which during the rainy season attract large
concentrations of giraffe, brown hyena, cheetah, leopard and lion, with
large herds of gemsbok and springbok constantly on the move.
Moremi Game Reserve
Partly in the Okavango Delta, with around one third being mainland
savannah, forests and floodplains, the Moremi provides extraordinary
elephant interaction and the rare opportunity to view wild rhino in
Botswana. When water levels are high it is possible to combine landbased game viewing activities with mokoro safaris along lily-filled
waterways alive with wildlife, pods of hippo, crocodile and notable
species of bird such as Pel’s Fishing Owl and Wattled Crane.

Namibia, not only a nature lover’s paradise but a photographer’s dream. Sunrise reveals a shoreline
flanked by a mesmerising sea of sand dunes, reflecting glorious reds and oranges in the unsullied
morning light. This is nature laid bare – the early morning mists drifting inland around the lunar
landscape of Damaraland, where gemsbok and ostrich roam the rocky plains. There are pre-historic
rock engravings and petrified forests here too, whilst further south the one hundred mile long Fish
River Canyon invites exploration. Relax on Swakopmund’s beaches or venture north to the
uninhabited desert plains of the Skeleton Coast – one of the most atmospheric places on earth.
Desert-adapted elephant, lion and giraffe roam the dry river courses; driftwood, shipwrecks and
whale skeletons sprinkle the shoreline. In world-class Etosha National Park – the ‘great white place’
of endless salt pans – delight in tracking black-faced impala and rhino beneath wide horizons and
clear, unpolluted skies. For adventure amidst dramatic desert mountain scenery head for the Kunene

Namibia is generally pleasant year round with less rain than
neighbouring countries. December to March can be more humid and
rain may be expected. April and May are the greenest months, with
some beautiful landscapes. Between June and August, temperatures can
be cooler, dropping dramatically at night in the desert however these
drier months can be ideal for game viewing as the animals seek out the
waterholes. September and October are generally considered the best
months for game viewing as the vegetation is less dense.

Namibia ~ Itineraries
Namibia In Depth
Namibrand Reserve
Close to Sossusvlei and bordered by the rugged Nubib Mountains
to the east, the 200,000 hectare NamibRand is a privately managed
game reserve where wildlife roam in a fence-free environment. Due
to its diverse range of habitat from red sand dunes to huge plains, the
reserve is able to sustain an impressive variety of species including
gemsbok, zebra, Bat-Eared fox, Cape Fox and spotted hyena, whilst
kudu, leopard and baboon inhabit the rockier terrain. The spectacular
landscape is a photographers dream with the earthy ochres and red
tones changing throughout the day. By night, star gazers are treated
to a dazzling display in the vast sky.
Caprivi Strip
An excellent combination with visits to Zambia or Botswana, the
strip also borders Angola and Zimbabwe. It is the habitat for the
critically endangered African Wild Dog as well as being the corridor
for elephant moving from Botswana and Namibia into Angola.
Lion, crocodile and buffalo are also present in significant numbers,
conveniently viewed from the riverside lodges within the national
parks, allowing the opportunity to enjoy land and boat photographic
safaris. The area is home to six different African tribes providing a
colourful fusion of culture and ancient traditions.

& 2 nights GocheGanas, Windhoek (HB)
Swakopmund
This and quaint and distinctly Germanic town is set on Namibia’s west
coast between the Namib Desert and the dramatic Atlantic Ocean.
The town’s lighthouse dominates the skyline, whilst private tours of
the coastal area bring opportunities to visit the atmospheric Skeleton
Coastal Park, Walvis Bay with its flamingo population and the seal
colony at Cape Cross. Swakopmund museum is brimming with exhibits
on Namibia’s history, flora and fauna.
Etosha
The size of Holland, Etosha National Park contains a salt pan so vast
that it is visible from outer space, and many waterholes around which
congregates an impressive diversity of wildlife. Visitors can expect to
see large numbers of elephant, springbok and zebra, plus sightings of
leopard, lion and rhino. Plentiful birdlife includes the European Bee
Eater and ostrich. Safari lodges are located in reserves on the edge of
the park, enabling safaris within private concessions as well as in the
main park.
Sossusvlei
Sossusvlei lies within the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the largest
conservation area in Africa. Nothing can quite prepare you for the
sight of the enormous sand dunes that provide heart-stopping vistas at
sunrise and sunset, some like Big Daddy and Big Mama rising to
a height of almost 400 metres. Drive the dunes in 4x4 vehicles for a
close-up experience, or catch a bird’s eye view from a small plane or
hot air balloon.
Skeleton Coast
As eerie as its name suggests, the Skeleton Coast is a 500 mile stretch
of wild and windswept shoreline. The collision of Namib Desert
heat and cold Benguela current which flows offshore causes fog and
unexpectedly cold sea breezes, perhaps the reason behind so many
shipwrecks. Wander past whale carcasses keeping an eye open for the
semi-precious stones which litter the landscape, or take a scenic flight
to view the drama from above.
Damaraland
Scenically breathtaking and culturally fascinating, Damaraland
extends 200 kilometres inland from the Skeleton Coast, its semidesert wilderness being home to communities of Damara people.
Desert-adapted elephant, Black rhino, giraffe and springbok thrive in
this harsh environment. Visitors can look forward to seeing the 6,000
year old rock engravings at Twyfelfontein and the petrified forest with
its 250 million year old fossilised logs. The burning red sunsets of the
Brandberg, known locally as Fire Mountain, are spectacular and not to
be missed.

Bounteous wildlife and bead-clad tribes people; gourmet bush dining under a canopy of trees, the silver
cutlery and white linen gleaming in the moonlight. Kenya holds unforgettable sights and surprises at
every turn. To the south, elephants traverse Amboseli National Park in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro,
a dry and dusty land dappled with swamplands to attract nature’s giants, the early light of dawn turning
the snow on the peaks into an ethereal pink. Unspoilt tropical beaches stretch along a glorious coastline,
with miles of coral reef that, when the tide is low enough, can be reached across the sand. Lush plantations
of banana, sugarcane, coconut, sisal and cashew nut cover the verdant coastal strip, nurtured by equatorial
rains. Inland lie the wondrous sights of the Great Rift Valley and the Masai Mara Game Reserve where
wildebeest and zebra mass for the Great Migration. In turn, the predators gather – lion and hyena
scenting their prey. The scene creates one of the greatest wildlife shows on earth. More natural wonder
awaits on nearby Lake Nakuru, the giraffe, rhino, waterbuck and tree-climbing lions taking second place
to the pink explosion of over a million flamingos dotting the soda lake’s surface. To the country’s north,
Mount Kenya rises majestically to the only peak where snow is found on the equator, brooding above an
array of scenery from vast open savannah in Samburu to the dry plains and kopjes of Shaba National
Reserve. Nature in the raw, viewed best from captivating wilderness camps topped by decadent Kenyan
skies assuring endless memories and authentic yesteryear experiences.

January to March is hot and dry with the long rains usually falling from
April to early June. Between June and October it is warm and dry during
the day but cold at night. The migration usually arrives in the Mara
from July with river crossings generally taking place between July and
September. The herds rest in Kenya before crossing back to Tanzania in
October. Kenya’s coast enjoys a tropical climate – April to June can be
humid, tempered by monsoon winds. Nairobi is pleasant year round due
to its altitude.

Kenya In Depth
Mombasa and the Indian Ocean Coast
Once a centre for the trade in gold, spices and ivory, Mombasa lies
on a coastline blessed with 300 miles of sugar-white beaches lapped
by the Indian Ocean and protected by coral reefs. Traditional sailing
dhows drift by whilst the deep-sea fishing excursions set out in search
of tuna, wahoo, sailfish and marlin. In the city itself curio shops line
the narrow streets leading to the waterfront; sound and light shows
accompany candle-lit dinners at the Portuguese-built Fort Jesus.
Masai Mara Game Reserve
East Africa’s most popular game reserve is home to a breathtaking
array of wildlife which roams its 200 square miles of open grassland
plains, woodlands and riverine forests. Justifiably famed for the
astonishing annual wildebeest migration which takes place in the
Mara between July and October, the reserve is also a year-round
safari destination, offering sightings of large prides of lions together
with elephants, buffalos, crocodiles, hippos, monkeys and over 450
species of birds. Camps are located within the reserve itself or in the
surrounding private conservancies. Within the reserve, vehicles must
return to camp at sunset; in the conservancies, game drives explore
the extensive areas around the camps, with drives into the reserve also
available – some conservancies also offer night drives and nature walks.
Clockwise from top: Zebras on Safari, Mangrove Trees on Beach, Elephant Family &

Nairobi
Samburu, Shaba, Meru & Laikipia
The safari capital of Africa enjoys good temperate weather and rapid
access to the game-rich wilderness which surrounds it. Animal-watchers
can reach the nearby National Park within ten minutes, whilst within
the city itself lie the Karen Blixen Museum, Daphne Sheldrick
Elephant Orphanage and the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife
Giraffe Centre, a breeding centre for the Rothschild giraffe where
visitors can hand-feed these acacia-leaf loving animals. The city has
excellent shopping, restaurants and nightlife, an ideal stopover en
route to one of Kenya’s many wildlife reserves or the coast.
The waters of the Ewaso Nyiro River, which flow through the reserves
of Samburu and Shaba, help to sustain life in this remote, semi-arid
wilderness, attracting elephant, crocodile, buffalo, lion and leopard
in addition to the Samburu Special Five – Beisa oryx, reticulated
giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk and Somali ostrich – which are only
found north of the equator. In Meru National Park, famed for its rhino
sanctuary, game drives take you through lion and elephant country, with
opportunities to spot rare species such caracal and lesser kudu amongst
the hills and kopjes, whilst the Laikipia Conservancy on the country’s
wild Northern frontier offers unrestricted freedom to explore the gameabundant wilderness – camel-assisted walking safaris can be arranged.
Lake Naivasha
Fringed with papyrus and almost 13 kilometres across, the lake’s
shallow waters draw large numbers of hippo, herds of plains game such
as buffalo and zebra, and a phenomenal variety of birdlife. Next to the
lake lies Hell’s Gate National Park, named for its towering red cliffs,
hissing steam vents and bubbling hot springs. For the energetic there is
hiking, biking and rock climbing; gentler pursuits include boat trips on
the lake and visits to the local flower farms.

BROODING RAINFOREST AND AN UNSURPASSED ABUNDANCE OF
PRIMATES MAKE RWANDA AND UGANDA TWO PRIME DESTINATIONS
FOR THOSE IN SEARCH OF A UNIQUE ANIMAL ENCOUNTER.
Primeval forests wreathed in mist form a dramatic natural setting for a poignant and memorable wildlife
experience. As the mists evaporate a ring of volcanic peaks is revealed, their forested slopes concealing
around seven hundred of the world’s largest living primates – the powerful yet remarkably peaceable
Silverback gorillas. Anticipation mounts as experienced guides lead ever higher through the undergrowth
until the moment of the dramatic first encounter…a glimpse of silver-grey hair through the trees then
suddenly up close to a family group led by a massive, chest-thumping male, his watchful eyes full of
curiosity. With only eight people allowed to visit a family for a period not exceeding one hour, the
experience is particularly intimate. Ancient forests reveal troupes of chimpanzees and playful Golden
Monkeys who entertain as they squabble amongst the trees or peer inquisitively at their visitors. Beyond
the primates, hiking and biking trails ascend the spectacular volcanic peaks and down below peaceful
lakes invite leisurely boat trips on calm, reflective waters. There will be much to relive later as you swap
tales around an open fire.

the Volcanoes
When To Go
Gorilla tracking takes place year round – early booking is absolutely
essential as permits are strictly limited, as is accommodation in the
small lodges. The climate in both countries is pleasantly tropical due to
the high altitude and the temperature varies little year round, averaging
around 21° C, though be prepared for cold nights and mornings in the
mountains. The rainier months are generally between March and May;
the drier months of mid May to mid October and December to February
are considered the optimum months for trekking experiences, game
viewing and outdoor activities such as walking and hiking. From mid
October to November, the short rains bring fresh life to the flora and
foliage and are excellent months for bird watching.
Our Pricing
Our pricing aims to give an indication of the price range from low to high
season. Low season for both countries is generally April, May, November
& December, high season runs from mid June to October. Supplements
may apply to peak periods such as Christmas and Easter. Itinerary prices
are per person based on 2 sharing and include return economy flights from
London. Regional departures and single supplements are available on
request. Where prices for our lodges/camps are shown as fully inclusive
this generally includes all food and drinks but in most cases will exclude
certain premium branded spirits, premium wines and Champagne.

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
Rising between 3,500 metres and 4,500 metres, the Virunga
Volcanoes form the natural habitat for a third of the world’s mountain
gorillas. Living in high altitude forest, these endangered animals can be
visited in small groups for a strictly limited time period, with viewings
also possible of playful Golden Monkeys, a subspecies endemic to the
high forests. As gorilla permits are limited it is advisable to book well in
advance. Activities to enjoy include bird watching, hiking, cycling and
boating on beautiful Lake Bulera where fishermen ply their trade in
distinctive dugout canoes.
Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda
Encompassing one of the oldest and largest rainforests in Africa, the
1,000 square kilometres park nestles in Rwanda’s south eastern hills
and forms part of the Great Rift Valley. Rich in biodiversity, the forest
harbours 75 mammal species, 275 bird species, 120 butterfly species
and over 100 species of orchid. The primates, however, are the main
attraction, with 13 species including our closest living relative the
chimpanzee, the L’Hoest’s monkey and the Angolan Colobus monkeys
who congregate in large groups often numbering over 300.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda
Impenetrable by name and nature due to its tangled vegetation and
deeply fissured landscape, the UNESCO World Heritage Bwindi Park
is home to roughly half of the world’s mountain gorillas, as well as
supporting many more species of primates and birds. A limited number
of passes are issued each day, enabling small tracking parties to observe
the gorilla families – the massive Silverback males weighing up to 500
pounds and standing 6 feet tall. As the gorillas live at high altitude, be
prepared for low temperatures in the early morning and at night.
Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda
With its sweeping savannah, rainforest and tranquil crater lakes,
the park is thought by many to be Uganda’s most scenic. Its complex
ecosystem supports over 90 species of mammal and 600 species of
birds – the highest in any protected area of Africa. Visit Katwe salt
lake to view migrating flamingos from October to May or take a boat
trip along the Kazinga Channel to spot hippo and buffalo. Game drives
bring frequent sightings of elephant, lion, hyena and warthog.
Kibale Forest National Park, Uganda
Huge swathes of rainforest dominate Kibale, the habitat of the greatest
concentration of primates found anywhere in East Africa. Track
habituated chimps as they move through the trees, keeping an eye open
for the localised Red Colobus monkeys, black faced vervet monkeys
and bush babies. Forest trails pass through terrain rich in flora and
butterflies, whilst birders have well over 300 species of birds to watch
including the endemic Prirogrine’s ground thrush. The smaller, hairier
forest elephant is a seasonal visitor.

VOLCANIC PEAKS OVERLOOK VAST PLAINS CROSSED BY A MILLION
MIGRATING WILDEBEEST, WHILST OFF THE COAST LIE THE EASYGOING BEACH RESORTS OF THE LEGENDARY ‘ISLAND OF SPICES’.
Life in Tanzania moves with the seasons. As the Great Migration gets underway, take to the skies in a hot
air balloon for a magical, slow moving view, watching the wildebeest spill over and swarm like ants across
the Serengeti plains. A supporting cast of zebra and antelope joins the throng whilst the crocodiles wait
patiently in rivers that have to be crossed in the push for pastures new. The astonishing Ngorongoro
volcanic crater, the largest intact caldera in the world, is home to more abundant wildlife. Within its
protective walls lies verdant vegetation that supports more than 25,000 animals including the rare black
rhino – a safari destination without equal. Pink flamingos and tree-climbing lions lure visitors to Manyara
National Park whilst in the south, Africa’s largest game reserve, the Selous, is filled with sparkling lagoons
and riverine vegetation. And everywhere, beautiful secluded camps and residences – colonial farmsteads,
enchanting cottages, luxuriant tree houses and lodges – with every desired comfort. The archipelago of
Zanzibar is the natural place to reflect, the lure of the legendary Spice Island hard to resist. A bohemian
ambience and mellow pace of life pervades Stone Town. Labyrinthine alleys lead to bustling bazaars, the
stalls brimming with exotic antiques and hand-carved furniture. Fascinating architecture creates a
magnificent backdrop – extravagantly decorated grand Arab houses and jagged minarets soaring above
palaces. Hints of India and the East. Beyond the urban maze, powdery white palm-fringed beaches call,
lapped by water imbued with ethereal shades of turquoise. Heart-stirring landscapes in every place.

When To Go
Tanzania’s dry season is from June to October, with the short rains
expected in November/December and the long rains from March to
May. The wildebeest migration follows the rains in a clockwise route
through the Serengeti – from January to March the herds are mainly in
the grassy south, calving in February before migrating north from April,
traversing the Western Corridor and Grumeti Reserve throughout
May, June and July, heading towards Kenya and the northern
Serengeti. They return south again from November. Zanzibar’s seasons
mirror Tanzania, with the driest months being June to October.

Serengeti National Park
Created to preserve the path of the world’s most famous animal
migration circuit, the park lies between Lake Victoria, Lake Eyasi
and the Ngorongoro Crater. Granted UNESCO World Heritage
Site status due to its unique habitats and biospheres it draws wildlife
lovers from across the world during the great migration when vast
herds of over a million wildebeest, gazelle and zebra thunder across
the plains. For a special experience take to the air in a hot air balloon
to witness this ‘eighth wonder of the world’. At other times of year
visitors can still view a thrilling array of animals including elephant,
buffalo, lion, giraffe and Grant’s gazelle.
The Great Migration
Whilst natural events such as this are never guaranteed, the herds
tend to move in a clockwise direction around the Serengeti and the
neighbouring Masai Mara. They congregate on the plains of the
southern Serengeti to calve during the first three months of the year,
moving north west around April and crossing the Grumeti River in
June. The migration continues into the northern Serengeti, crossing
the Mara River in July. The herds will return to the Serengeti again
around October. NB Animal behaviour is highly unpredictable and
dictated often by changing weather patterns – our map is intended to
give an indication of the months of the year when you would normally
expect to find the wildebeest herds, but this cannot be guaranteed.
Clockwise from top: Dik-dik, Zanzibar Beach, Cheetah.
Opposite Page: Giraffe in the Serengeti.
Lake Manyara National Park
Selous & Ruaha – The Southern Reserves
Much praised for its natural beauty, the park lies within the Rift Valley
– the lake covering up to 200 square kilometres when water levels
are high. Established to protect elephants, the dense woodlands and
steep mountainsides also reveal tree-climbing lions and large troops of
baboons, whilst zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and waterbuck roam the grassy
plains. The alkaline waters attract huge flocks of flamingos and pelicans.
Tanzania’s southern reserves cover vast expanses of remote, unspoiled
and untamed wilderness. Selous Reserve, a World Heritage Site and
one of Africa’s largest reserves, is home to an impressive number of
elephant herds – a spectacular landscape of plains, gorges and lakes
through which flow the Ruaha and Rufiji rivers. Waterbuck quench
their thirst under the watchful eye of the crocodiles; lion, wild dogs and
the rare sable can also be sighted. Guided walks, seasonal boat trips
and off road game drives are offered. Wild and relatively unexplored,
Ruaha National Park shelters over 400 species of birdlife, 1600 kinds
of flora and an abundance of animals attracted to the seasonal rivers.
Tarangire National Park
A popular stop on the Northern Circuit, Tarangire extends into
two game controlled areas through which the wildlife moves freely.
Impressively large herds of elephant wander amongst the baobab
and acacia trees and congregate around the dry Tarangire River bed
during the dry season between June and September; droves of gazelle,
wildebeest, zebra and giraffe migrate here before the rains. Keep an eye
out too for viewings of the magnificent oryx, the long-necked gerenuk,
lions, leopard and the diminutive dik-dik.
Ngorongoro Crater
Phenomenal game viewing is assured in this giant unbroken caldera
on the eastern edge of the Serengeti. 620 kilometres deep and nearly
3 million years old it is a veritable microcosm comprising dense
forest, swamps, lakes, rivers and mountains which are home to 25,000
animals including the Big Five. The soda lake in the centre of the
grasslands brings wonderful viewings of flamingos.
Zanzibar & Pemba Islands
Few destinations conjure up a more romantic image than Zanzibar
with its eternal scents of locally grown spices and virgin white sand
beaches. In historic Stone Town architectural influences reflect a
mix of Swahili, Arab, Persian and Indian cultures, the Old Fort dating
back to the 1700s, whilst Marahubi Palace was built for the harem of a
Sultan Prince. Lying 50 kilometres north of Zanzibar, Pemba Island,
too, is heady with spices, being a world centre for the growing of cloves.
Pristine beaches invite relaxation, whilst watersports available include
water-skiing, windsurfing and diving amongst untouched coral and
abundant marine life. A marine conservation area surrounds nearby
Misali Island, with nesting sites for green and hawksbill turtles.

Booking Conditions
The holidays featured are operated by Carrier Ltd (“Carrier”,
“we”, “us” and “our”). All bookings are subject to our full
booking conditions and Essential Holiday Information.
The following are an abbreviated version of our full booking
conditions which appear on our website. In these conditions,
“you” and “your” means all persons named on the booking or
any of them, as the context requires and “lead name” means
the person who makes the booking.
MAKING A BOOKING AND PAYING FOR YOUR
HOLIDAY
To confirm a holiday booking you must pay a deposit of
£250 per person or 10% of the total holiday cost, whichever
is the greater, or any applicable higher deposit. If you book
70 days or less prior to departure, full payment is due at the
time of booking. After your booking is taken, a confirmation
invoice will be sent to you. A contract between us will come
into existence when this invoice is issued. Full payment
must be received not less than 70 days before departure. We
accept various methods of payment, however please note
that if you choose to pay by credit card, there will be a charge
levied. If you do not pay in full by the due date, cancellation
charges as shown in our full booking conditions will be
payable. Any money paid by you to one of our authorised
travel agents for holiday arrangements which do not include
flights arranged by us is held by the agent on our behalf. For
flight inclusive bookings, all monies paid to an authorised
travel agent for your holiday with us will be held on behalf
of and for the benefit of the Trustees of the Air Travel Trust
subject to the travel agent’s obligation to pay such monies to
us in accordance with our trading terms unless we fail. In the
unlikely event of our financial failure, all monies then held
by or subsequently paid to the travel agent for your holiday
will be held by the agent on behalf of and for the benefit of the
Trustees of the Air Travel Trust without any obligation on the
agent to pay such monies to us.
FINANCIAL PROTECTION AND ABTA
We hold an Air Travel Organiser’s Licence (ATOL number
2968). When you buy an ATOL protected flight or flight
inclusive holiday from us, you will receive an ATOL
Certificate. This lists what is financially protected, where
you can get information on what this means for you and who
to contact if things go wrong. We, or the suppliers identified
on your ATOL Certificate, will provide you with the services
listed on the ATOL Certificate (or a suitable alternative). In
some cases, where neither we nor the supplier are able to do
so for reasons of insolvency, an alternative ATOL holder may
provide you with the services you have bought or a suitable
alternative (at no extra cost to you). You agree to accept that
in those circumstances the alternative ATOL holder will
perform those obligations and you agree to pay any money
outstanding to be paid by you under your contract to that
alternative ATOL holder. However, you also agree that in
some cases it will not be possible to appoint an alternative
ATOL holder, in which case you will be entitled to make a
claim under the ATOL scheme (or your credit card issuer
where applicable). If we, or the suppliers identified on your
ATOL certificate, are unable to provide the services listed (or
a suitable alternative, through an alternative ATOL holder
or otherwise) for reasons of insolvency, the Trustees of the
Air Travel Trust may make a payment to (or confer a benefit
on) you under the ATOL scheme. You agree that in return
for such a payment or benefit you assign absolutely to those
Trustees any claims which you have or may have arising out
of or relating to the non-provision of the services, including
any claim against us, the travel agent (or your credit card
issuer where applicable). You also agree that any such claims
may be re-assigned to another body, if that other body has
paid sums you have claimed under the ATOL scheme.
For further information, visit the ATOL website at
www.atol.org.uk.
The correct timings, using the 24-hour clock system, may
have been adjusted since we published the brochure or you
received your invoice.
We are a member of ABTA (ABTA number V0391). If you
book a combination of services (for example, accommodation
and car hire) for your holiday with us at the same time as part
of the same booking which does not include flights, ABTA
will financially protect your holiday in the same way except
that, if already abroad, you will be returned to the point where
your contracted arrangements with us commenced. Please go
to www.abta.com for a copy of the guide to ABTA’s scheme of
Financial Protection.
CHANGES TO YOUR HOLIDAY
Requests for changes must be made in writing by the lead
name and, where these can be made, will be subject to the
charges shown in our full booking conditions.
ABTA and ABTA members help holidaymakers to get the
most from their travel and assist them when things do not go
according to plan. We are obliged to maintain a high standard
of service to you by ABTA’s Code of Conduct. For further
information about ABTA, the Code of Conduct and the
arbitration scheme available to you if you have a complaint
contact ABTA at 30 Park Street, London, SE1 9EQ or see
www.abta.com
CANCELLING YOUR HOLIDAY
Cancellations must be notified by the lead name. Any
notification by telephone must also be confirmed in writing
or by e-mail within 24 hours by the lead name. Cancellation
will take effect from the working day we receive your
notification provided that written confirmation of any
telephone cancellation is received by us within 24 hours of
the original notification. Cancellation charges will then be
payable as shown in our full booking conditions.
PRICES AND YOUR INVOICE
Before confirmation, we reserve the right to change our
prices or any brochure information. Pricing errors sometimes
occur. If we become aware of any error, we will endeavour
to notify you at the time of booking (if we are then aware
of the mistake) or within 7 days of the time of booking, or
as soon as reasonably possible. We must reserve the right
to cancel the booking if you do not wish to accept the price
which is actually applicable to the holiday in which case,
you will be given the choice to amend your booking to an
alternative holiday, at the correct price. It is important to
check your invoice as soon as you receive it. In the event
of any discrepancy please contact us or your travel agent
immediately. We regret we cannot accept any liability if
we are not notified of any inaccuracies (for which we are
responsible) in any document within 10 days of our sending
it out (5 days for tickets). We will do our best to rectify any
mistake notified to us outside these time limits but you must
meet any costs involved in doing so.
OUT OF DATE-RANGE FLIGHTS
Please see our full booking conditions for terms applicable
to holidays including flights which are out of date range and
therefore not available to book when the booking is made.
A contract between us will then come into existence on the
basis that the price payable will be that applicable when the
airline releases the seats and the timings and other flight
details will be those confirmed at that time which may be
different to those advised at the time of booking.
OUR PRICE GUARANTEE
All prices quoted in this brochure are calculated on the basis
of known costs on 15 August 2013 and exchange rates as
published in the Financial Times of 15 August 2013. Once
you have accepted the price advised at the time of booking
and we have issued a confirmation invoice, that price is fully
guaranteed and will not be subject to any surcharges.
HOLIDAY INSURANCE
It is a requirement of booking that you hold adequate travel
insurance which is suitable for your particular needs.
TRAVEL INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTS
Approximately 7 days before departure you will receive your
flight/ e-ticket together with an itinerary. Please ensure
that you check the flight timings on your tickets carefully.
TRANSFERRING BOOKINGS
If you are prevented from travelling, you may transfer
the place on the booking to someone else, subject to the
conditions and charges set out in the full booking conditions.
YOUR AIRLINE
In accordance with EU Directive (EC) No 2111/2005, we
are required to bring to your attention the existence of a
“Community list” which contains details of air carriers
who are subject to an operating ban within the EU. The
Community list is available for inspection at http://ec.europa.
eu/transport/air-ban/list_en.htm.
We will advise you of the actual carrier(s) (or, if the actual
carrier(s) is not known, the likely carrier(s)) that will operate
your flight(s) at the time of booking. Where we are not able
to inform you of the likely carrier(s) at the time of booking,
we will inform you of the identity of the actual carrier(s) as
soon as we become aware of this. Any change to the operating
carrier(s) after your booking has been confirmed will be
notified to you as soon as possible. If your confirmed carrier
becomes subject to an operating ban and we/ the carrier are
unable to offer you a suitable alternative the provisions of “If
we change or cancel your holiday”
will apply.
FLIGHT CHANGES
The flight timings shown in our brochure, on our website
and/or detailed on your confirmation invoice are for
guidance only and are subject to alteration and confirmation.
Flight timings are outside our control. They are set by airlines
and are subject to various factors. We will advise you of any
significant change as soon as we are informed by the airline.
Minor timing changes will be shown on the flight tickets.
Should the changes involve a material reduction of your
holiday duration, we will offer you a refund of any applicable
costs. Any change in the identity of the airline, flight timings
and/or aircraft type (if advised) will not entitle you to cancel
or change to other arrangements without paying our normal
charges except where specified in these conditions.
IF WE CHANGE OR CANCEL YOUR HOLIDAY
We reserve the right to make changes to and cancel
confirmed holidays. Most changes are minor but may
occasionally be significant. Examples of significant changes
are shown in our full booking conditions. Some of our
holidays require a minimum number of participants to enable
us to operate them; if the minimum number is not reached,
we are entitled to cancel. We will notify you or your travel
agent of cancellation for this reason no later than 70 days
prior to departure.
If we have to make a significant change or cancel, we will
tell you as soon as possible. If there is time to do so before
departure, we will offer you the choice of (a) accepting the
changed arrangements; or (b) purchasing an alternative
holiday from us (paying or receiving a refund in respect
of any price difference); or (c) cancelling or accepting the
cancellation in which case you will receive a full and quick
refund of all monies you have paid to us.
If we have to make a significant change or cancel we
will, where compensation is appropriate, pay you the
compensation payments shown in our full booking
conditions depending on the circumstances and when the
significant change or cancellation is notified to you subject to
the following exceptions. Compensation will not be payable
and no liability beyond offering the above mentioned
choices can be accepted where (1) we are forced to make a
change or cancel as a result of unusual and unforeseeable
circumstances beyond our control, the consequences of
which we could not have avoided even with all due care
or (2) we have to cancel because the minimum number of
bookings necessary for us to operate your holiday has not
been reached (see above). Other exceptions apply as referred
to in our full booking conditions.
FORCE MAJEURE
Except where otherwise expressly stated in these booking
conditions, we regret we cannot accept liability or pay
any compensation where the performance or prompt
performance of our obligations under our contract with
you is prevented or affected by or you otherwise suffer any
damage, loss or expense of any nature as a result of “force
majeure”. In these booking conditions, “force majeure”
means any event which we or the supplier of the service(s)
in question could not, even with all due care, foresee or
avoid. Such events are likely to include (whether actual or
threatened) war, riot, civil strife, terrorist activity, industrial
dispute, natural or nuclear disaster, adverse weather
conditions, fire and all similar events outside our control.
OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU FOR YOUR HOLIDAY
ARRANGEMENTS
(a) We promise to make sure that the holiday arrangements
we have agreed to make, perform or provide as applicable
as part of our contract with you are made, performed
or provided with reasonable skill and care. This means
that, subject to these booking conditions, we will accept
responsibility if, for example, you suffer death or personal
injury or your contracted holiday arrangements are not
provided as promised or prove deficient as a result of the
failure of ourselves, our employees, agents or suppliers to use
reasonable skill and care in making, performing or providing,
as applicable, your contracted holiday arrangements. It is
your responsibility to show that reasonable skill and care
has not been used if you wish to make a claim against us.
We will only be responsible for what our employees, agents
and suppliers do or do not do if they were at the time acting
within the course of their employment (for employees) or
carrying out work we had asked them to do (for agents and
suppliers).
(b) We will not be responsible for any injury, illness, death,
loss (for example loss of enjoyment), damage, expense,
cost or other sum or claim of any description whatsoever
which results from any of the following: - the act(s) and/or
omission(s) of the person(s) affected or any member(s) of
their party or the act(s) and/or omission(s) of a third party
not connected with the provision of your holiday and which
were unforeseeable or unavoidable or ‘force majeure’ as
defined above
(c) For claims which do not involve personal injury, illness
or death, the most we will have to pay if we are liable to you is
twice the price the person affected paid for their holiday (not
including insurance premiums and amendment charges).
We will only have to pay this maximum amount if everything
has gone wrong and you have received no benefit from your
holiday. Where enjoyment of only some days has been
affected, we will refund reasonable related expenses and pay
a daily sum of compensation up to £50 per day per person
affected.
(d) Subject to (b) above, if you are killed, injured or become
ill during or as a result of, carriage (including the process of
getting on and/or off the transport concerned) by aircraft,
ship or train forming part of the holiday arrangements
booked before departure from the UK and to which any
international convention or regulation applies, our liability
(including the maximum amount of compensation we will
have to pay you, the types of claim and the circumstances in
which compensation will be payable) will be limited as if we
were the carrier in question. The most we will have to pay
you for that claim or that part of a claim if we are found liable
to you on any basis is the most the carrier concerned would
have to pay under the international convention or regulation
which applies to the travel arrangements in question
(for example, the Warsaw Convention as amended or
unamended and the Montreal Convention for international
travel by air and/or for airlines with an operating licence
granted by an EU country, the EC Regulation on Air Carrier
Liability No 889/2002 for national and international
travel by air, the Athens Convention (as amended by the
2002 protocol where applicable) for international travel
by sea and COTIF, the Convention on International Travel
by Rail). Where a carrier would not be obliged to make
any payment to you under the applicable international
convention or regulation in respect of a claim or part of a
claim, we similarly are not obliged to make a payment to
you for that claim or part of the claim. When making any
payment, we are entitled to deduct any money which you
have received or are entitled to receive from the carrier for
the claim in question. Copies of the applicable international
conventions and regulations are available from us on
request.
(e) Under EU law you have rights in some circumstances
to refunds and/or compensation from your airline in cases of
denied boarding, cancellation or delay to flights. Full details
of these rights will be publicised at EU airports and will also
be available from airlines.
(f ) Please note, we cannot accept responsibility for any
services which do not form part of our contract.
(g) Our suppliers have their own conditions which may
limit or exclude supplier’s liability to you. Copies are
available on request.
(h) Operational decisions may be taken by airlines and
airports resulting in delays, diversions or rescheduling for
which we cannot accept responsibility. Where, as a result of
force majeure we are obliged to change or end your holiday
after departure, but before the end of your holiday, we
will not pay compensation or reimburse you for expenses
incurred.
EXPERIENCES FORMING PART OF YOUR HOLIDAY
Please see our full booking conditions for applicable terms.
LOCALLY BOOKED EXCURSIONS/ACTIVITIES
AND EXPERIENCES NOT FORMING PART OF YOUR
HOLIDAY
Whilst on holiday, you may be offered the opportunity to
buy optional excursions and activities. Your contract for
these will be with the local provider and will be subject to the
provider’s terms and conditions, some of which may exclude
or limit its liability to you, and will be governed by local
law and jurisdiction. We accept no liability for any breach
of contract or negligent act or omission of any provider.
Some excursions/activities may contain an element of risk
or require a good level of physical fitness. If in doubt, you
should make direct inquiries with the local provider before
deciding to buy, and check that you are covered by your
travel insurance policy.
IF YOU HAVE A COMPLAINT
If you have cause for complaint whilst on holiday, you must
bring it to the attention of our local representative and/
or the supplier (eg hotel manager) immediately, or call
the emergency contact number provided in your travel
documents. They will do their best to rectify the situation.
If you do not raise concerns immediately, this may affect
our ability to investigate and take remedial action and it
may impact on the way your complaint is dealt with. If
you remain dissatisfied, you should send us a complaint
in writing within 28 days of the completion of the holiday.
Please remember to quote your holiday booking number and
daytime telephone number.
If your complaint cannot be resolved, you may use the ABTA
arbitration scheme which is summarised in our full booking
conditions. Full details are available on request or from
www.abta.com
LAW AND JURISDICTION
We both agree that English law (and no other) will apply
to your contract and to any dispute, claim or other matter
of any description which arises between us (“claim”) (except
as set out below). We both also agree that any claim (and
whether or not involving any personal injury) must be dealt
with under the ABTA arbitration scheme (if the scheme
is available for the claim in question and you wish to use
it – see above) or by the Courts of England and Wales only
unless, in the case of Court proceedings, you live in Scotland
or Northern Ireland. In this case, proceedings must either
be brought in the Courts of your home country or those of
England and Wales. If proceedings are brought in Scotland
or Northern Ireland, you may choose to have your contract
and claim governed by the law of Scotland/Northern Ireland
as applicable (but if you do not so choose, English law
will apply).
