Putting art in its place
When you enter this venerable classical
building on Colborne’s main street be
prepared to be impressed. The high, barrelvaulted ceilings reflect the building’s original
purpose – to protect the documents that
recorded the district’s land ownership. Today
it protects the works of art forged by the
Colborne Society of Artists. Founded 10 years
ago, this talented group has regular shows of
outstanding sculpture, paintings, crafts and
mixed media. Drop in throughout the year for
a 21st century experience in a 19th century
place.

Since the turn of the century, people have planned getaways into Northumberland
and they are still discovering its charm and rejuvenating qualities.
In the early 1800s, a plank road carried visitors to Gore's Landing on Rice Lake to enjoy
canoe and steamboat rides across its inland waters. Today, visitors can explore the
Trent-Severn Waterway, the area's many nature trails, artists' studios, native culture,
driving and cycling routes, plus indulge in nearby theatre and shopping. And they can
still canoe along a shore and commune with nature.
The Town of Cobourg once rivaled Paris as a recreational destination in the late 1800s.
With its magnificent beach, recreational harbour and year-round festivals, people continue
to flock to the Lake Ontario town. Close by is the lakeside Municipality of Port Hope
with its legendary reputation for antique shopping in its historically restored downtown.
Travel eastward through the communities of Grafton and Colborne along the historical
Apple Route, a former stagecoach line.
Brighton is a community that reaches out into Lake Ontario with its waterfront restaurants
and many adventures in Presqu'ile Provincial Park, while the Municipality of Trent Hills
on the Trent-Severn Waterway entices people to return year after year to enjoy water,
fun and sun.
If you haven't had the pleasure, come pay us a visit. We're just an hour east of Toronto.

again...
The picturesque landscapes that set Northumberland apart,
dotted with historic landmarks, museums, artistic destinations,
unique shopping and wonderful spots to enjoy regional food, turn
the words let's take a drive into an adventure.
Though the county takes less than an hour to traverse – and only about half an
hour travelling north and south – it's home to a surprisingly large number of unique
landforms and waterways. They include the Trent-Severn Waterway, the Oak Ridges Moraine,
the Greenbelt, Lake Ontario, the Ganaraska River and Rice Lake, plus both the Ganaraska and
Northumberland forests.
Whether you travel by car, bus, motorcycle or bicycle, each sojourn offers experiences to remember.
Northumberland County's tourism department has identified motorcycling routes throughout the county,
complete with information about restaurants with patios at the parking lots and scenic areas along the way.
In addition, eight scenic, pleasurable and historical tours, along with a new car rally adventure, are available in the
booklet: Driving Tours of Northumberland. Both are available at www.northumberlandtourism.com/drivingtours.

Northumberland is part of the Greenbelt surrounding the Golden Horseshoe. The Oak Ridges Moraine, a
legacy from the time that glaciers covered the area, carved out valleys and deposited gravel and rocks into
hills and drumlins that are the reservoirs for our drinking water. The marshes are the filters. Today, these
natural areas are protected from development so expect to share your hiking experience with a family of
porcupines, a wintering Blue Jay or a pair of Osprey teaching their young to fly.
Both the Oak Ridges Hiking Trail and a section of the Ganaraska Hiking Trail derive their spectacular views
from this ancient terrain. Runners and hikers enjoy the trails of the Ganaraska Forest where pine-filled sections

The Waterfront Trail, which begins in the Niagara Escarpment, is well developed
through Northumberland. In many areas from Port Hope and Cobourg in the west
and to Brighton in the eastern part of the county, the trail is adjacent to Lake Ontario
as it makes its way through a series of towns and villages. Along the way check out
the marinas, scuba diving opportunities, wooded trails and wetlands.

setting sun as the call of a loon breaks the stillness.
Back to Nature
Step into Nature is the theme of Ontario's conservation
areas and Northumberland has some very unique ones.
The Seymour Conservation Area's newly established,
rare habitat, Oak Alvar Savannah, contains highly
adaptable plant life growing in shallow soil over
limestone in the Lower Trent Conservation Region.
This globally significant habitat is distinct from the
Black Oaks Savanna and Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. This
second region of tall grass prairie is on the sandy soils
of the Oak Ridges Moraine on the Alderville First
Nation Reserve near Rice Lake, located within the
Ganaraska Region Conservation Area.
For scenic beauty hike the Goodrich-Loomis
Conservation area off Highway 30 near Brighton within
the Lower Trent Conservation Area. Make sure to take
along your lunch.

areas go to www.northumberlandtourism.com/trails.

There are several areas where you can enjoy riding

Pointe Equestrian Centre with its competitionsized horse arena adjacent to the
Northumberland Forest.

Board flips and tricky jumps make this a sport for the
physically fit and daring. The newest facility is next to

Festivals really are synonymous with music and several are dedicated

within the rolling hills and waterways of
Northumberland is a direct reflection of
the magnificent area that has drawn
artists to live and vacation here for more
than a century and a half.
This is the part of Ontario that inspired
well-known early authors, Susanna
Moodie and Catharine Parr Traill, who
wrote about what they found while early
settlers transformed forests into
homesteads.
These naturally uplifting surroundings
inspired artist John Hayward to build a
summer retreat on Rice Lake during the
1850s where he created miniature
cameos for people around the world.
This county is even responsible for fanning
the entertaining flame of the Great Farini
who crossed Niagara Falls during the
1860s on a tightrope to the delight of
crowds, rivaling even Blondin's deathdefying feats.
Today, the undulating hills, glistening
lakes and sparkling rivers of the county
continue to draw authors, artists,
musicians and performers to share their
imaginations and talents at venues as

Such tours are great ways to see the
insides of old homes and spectacular
gardens you might not experience
otherwise. Northumberland is host to a
series of garden tours from late May,
through June and into early July. In
addition, Port Hope has an annual house

annual Port Hope House Tour is held in
early October.
Another opportunity to see behind

municipalities participating on a rotating
