This time we are going to Wonderland for a Mad Hatters Tea Party. Girl Guiding Anglia is holding a Mad Hatters Tea Party at Hautbois on 7 & 8 July 2012, however you may also wish to organise a Tea Party in your County to save your Rainbows travelling time and expense. We’re sure you all know your County’s preferred venues so we have put together this pack of quick and easy ideas to inspire you to hold a Tea Party of your own within your County, Division or District. Add this to some ideas of your own and we know that your Rainbows will have the most wonderful time! We have also included copies of the necessary forms, letter templates and some useful websites. A table cloth centrepiece will be included with this pack, and a larger centrepiece is available on loan from Anglia Region if wished, with additional stickers and balloons also being available from the Region office. For digital copies of any of the pack contents please contact the Region Office on 01603 737 357 (option 1) or email angliahq@ girlguiding-anglia.org.uk. Hard copies are available on request but will incur an additional printing and postage charge. It is hoped that each County will hold their event during 2012 and in doing so raise further funds to enable completion of the planned Rainbow Zone at Hautbois, just as the Rainbows themselves have designed it. To this end we have a very attractive badge that no Rainbow would want to be without! – see the badge below! A badge order form is included in this pack. We hope you have a great time at your Tea Party and will soon enjoy a visit to the new Rainbow Zone at Hautbois. Girlguiding Anglia Mad Hatter s Tea Party 2 Some Ideas To Get You Started • Bunny ears for everyone • Make a large wooden or cardboard Cheshire Cat and each Rainbow to ‘Pin the Grin’ on the cat. • Have someone dressed as a White Rabbit appearing randomly throughout the day shouting “I’m late, I’m late” or asking people what the time is. • ‘Time’ could be a secondary theme – try the ‘One Minute Challenges (see pg.36). • Have a tablecloth competition for the Unit with the best design. Offer a small prize for 1st, 2nd & 3rd. • Cupcakes with ‘Eat Me’ labels (see pg. 5) or jam tarts for everyone before they leave. • Make edible tea cups – recipe included (see pg.26). • If venue allowed –could each activity be food based and Rainbow make their own Tea!!! • ‘Drink Me’ potions, ‘ Eat Me’ biscuits, jam tarts, sandwiches, marshmallow caterpillars etc. • Don’t forget about the Mock Turtle, Gryphon, Lobster Quadrille, Walrus & the Carpenter. All these poems can be found on-line. • Tweedle Dum & Tweedle Dee – could this be a matching game? • Do a Caucus Race. (see pg. 31). Make your guests run round in a circle and when you shout ‘stop’ the last one to sit down or run to the middle is out. Or make a caucus version of ‘musical chairs’. (List of music included., see pg. 33). • Hide a soft toy rabbit somewhere on the site and offer a small prize for the finder. • Follow a trail of large rabbit footprints to your craft tent or large marquee. • Could you get your local ‘Paint your own pottery’ cafe/ company involved to paint cups and saucers? • Make your own place mats using images of Mad Hatter (found online) and then laminated or put in A4 plastic sleeves. 3 4 DRINK ME DRINK ME DRINK ME DRINK ME DRINK ME DRINK ME DRINK ME DRINK ME DRINK ME DRINK ME DRINK ME DRINK ME EAT ME EAT ME EAT ME EAT ME EAT ME EAT ME EAT ME EAT ME EAT ME EAT ME EAT ME EAT ME 5 this way that way 6 wrong way right way 7 “ORRF WITH HIS HEAD!” “I’M LATE, I’M LATE!” 8 “CURIOUSER AND CURIOUSER” “COME ALONG IT’S TIME FOR TEA” 9 You are invited to our Rainbow ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’ on ________________________ at (time) ________________________ at (place) ________________________ Girlguiding Anglia Mad Hatters Tea Party Come and join in the fun! Attach garden cane to the back of the flower with selltape. You could add heart petal centres to your flowers, decorate the petals with sparkles, draw stamens with glitter glue in the centre and make leaves to stick on. Template for card petals 22 Make stand-up animals! How to make: 1. Colour in the animals. Make two body shapes for each and the number of limbs as shown. Cut out all the shapes including one spacer for each animal. 2. Make holes at the points marked ‘o’ on each piece. 3. Fold the spacer along the dotted lines and stick one tab onto each body part between the arm and leg holes, so that the two body parts are lined up but separated by the spacer. 4. Fasten the arms and legs on with paper fasteners and glue the insides of the head together. 5. Bend the legs out slightly to make your animal stand or sit. In fact, the cups rotate around the table so quickly Alice never gets so much as a sip of tea. Made from ice cream cones and cookies, these edible cup-andsaucer treat holders are easy to assemble and will ensure that each guest at your tea party gets his or her fill! You will need: • Cup-style wafer ice cream cone • Round sugar or shortbread biscuit • Decorator’s icing • Two chewy ring sweets • Assorted sweets and popcorn to fill the teacup How to make: 1.Use a serrated knife to carefully cut the cup portion of the ice cream cone from the handle (job for the Leader). Discard the handle and set the cup aside for now. 2.Place a chewy ring sweet on the centre of the biscuit, using decorator’s icing to “glue” it in place. 3.Set the ice cream cone cup on top of the chewy ring and then use a thin line of decorator’s icing to hold the cone in place (if needed). 4.For a teacup handle, slice the second chewy ring in half. Gently press the cut ends of one of the candy halves against the cone to stick the handle in place. 5.Fill the cup with a few sweets or other snacks…and it’s teatime! 26 Make some bunny rabbit ears! Materials: • Paper • Tape • Scissors Instructions: 1. Make a strip of paper long enough to go around the Rainbow’s head (you may need two tape to pieces end to end to get it long enough. 2. Print, colour and cut out the ears 3. Tape the ears onto the strip OPTIONAL • Decorate the strip with stickers/markers/etc as desired • Tape the strip in a loop so it fits on the head 27 Make a mad hat for your party You will need: • Newspaper • Masking tape • Scissors • Flowers (you can use fresh or artificial flowers) How to make: 1.Take 3-4 sheets of newspaper and mould over each Rainbow’s head. 2.While holding the newspaper in place, wrap masking tape around the head to create the mould for the hat. 3.Starting at the forehead, begin to roll the brim up tightly. 4.Take time to tape your flowers in place around the hat. Then finish by rolling up the brim. And here is the end product! 28 Make a flamingo croquet stick! Make a game of croquet with sticks made from rolls of newspaper with a flamingo head made out of thick card stuck on. Cut around this flamingo head: 29 Here are some Wonderland puzzles Can you unscramble these letters to make five words linked to Alice in Wonderland: IELCA BBITAR SLASG DAM TTREAH HREICESH ATC Can you find these words in this wordsearch: Q U E E N H P U Y N A E Hearts C A R D M A Card K N V O O R Dodo T I G D U T Alice E J U O S S Mouse A L I C E D Party S P A R T Y r u yo e w rit r in ra u te e D vo rac lic nd u fa a A rla yo ch om de o ? fr on y d m W h the w ke li – How many characters from Alice in Wonderland can you name? s rd o e y w ak an m E IN m u w yo LIC ND A Ho an : A c m RL E o D fr ON ?? W 30 Queen Party ideas! Have a Caucus Race The Dodo organised a duck, a dodo, a lory, an eaglet, a crab, a magpie and a canary into a Caucus race. The silly creatures had no idea how to race properly, they just ran around in circles for half an hour then shouted for prizes. Alice gave them a silver thimble from her pocket and for a treat she shared out a box of sweets among them. How to have your own Caucus Race: Make animal masks. Have a silly race e.g. sideways like a crab, waddle like ducks or try racing in flippers. Share out sweets! All these creatures, along with a mouse, swam in a deep pool made by Alice’s tears. A big wave washed everyone up onto the beach. You could have a plastic duck or plastic mouse race or make your own floating creatures and try them out in bowls of water (or a paddling pool). You could have a competition for the oddest looking creatures or the one who floats the longest. 31 Lets do some party activities! Make your own magic ‘Drink Me’ potion! 1.Design your own recipes 2.Give the Rainbows a choice of different squashes, lemonade etc to mix their own glass 3.What will thier potion make them do? Make your own magic ‘Eat Me’ cakes! 1.Link with healthy eating - using fruit for treats 2.Decorate your cakes with ‘Eat Me’ labels (in this pack). Make a Blue Caterpillar 1.Use a piece of blue material 2.Roll it round a thick marker pen 3.Stick the edges together to form caterpillar shape 4.Decorate it with glitter glue perhaps smoking a funny looking pipe? The Dormouse in the teapot 1.Have a teapot treasure hunt to find the dormouse. 2.You could make different cardboard teapots, with one hiding the dormouse. 32 E M K N DRI E M T A E Music ideas for your party! •‘White Rabbit’ by Jefferson Airplane •‘I am the Walrus’ by the Beatles •‘Looking Glass’ by Hypnogaja •‘Through The Looking Glass’ by Symphony X •‘What are you waiting for’ by Gwen Stefany •‘Don’t come around here no more’ by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers •‘Heads Will Roll’ by YEAH YEAH YEAHS •‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Wynter Gordon •‘Sunshine’ by Aerosmith •‘Alice, Alice’ by Victim Effect •‘Alice’ by Lisa Mitchell •‘Off with your head’ by Mz. You may want to provide copies of pictures of roses, characters or even tea pots and tea cups to allow them to colour or paint. We’ve enclosed some for you. Make a “Pin the Hat on the Mad Hatter” game supervised as the girls play. Find Dormouse: Hide Dormouse and let the Rainbows look for him. Have everyone wear a name tag with their name spelt backwards. Then have everyone use that as their name for the day. Or pin the name of a character from the story on everyone’s back. Each has to ask for clues to guess who the character is. Make silly rules that when you talk to someone and they answer they must say the opposite of what it is they really want. “I’m late, I’m late” game: Just like a potato sack race. Have everyone put on bunny ears and jump across the hall/lawn saying “I’m late”. Put Alice in Wonderland character names in a hat and have everyone pull one out. Then have everyone act out who they are. 35 Mad Hatter One Minute Challenges Try the following with a few friends for just a minute....... Can you say a joke to another Rainbow? Can you hop on one leg? Can you take your shoes and socks off and put them back on again? Can you give someone a cuddle Can you draw a picture of a rabbit? Can you create a short dance?
