Annual Report - American Red Cross
2011 Annual Report DOWN TH E STR E ET ACROSS TH E COU NTRY AROU N D TH E WOR LD SM Los Angeles Region Mission Statement The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Network Humanity • Impartiality • Neutrality • Independence • Voluntary service • Unity • Universality © 2011 The American National Red Cross A Message from the Chairman and CEO On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami destroyed entire communities in northeastern Japan. With more than 20,000 people killed or missing, 800,000 homes completely or partially destroyed, and economic losses of more than $300 billion, it is considered the worst disaster in Japan’s recorded history. Within hours of this cataclysmic disaster, generous Southland residents and businesses opened their hearts and pocketbooks to raise funds for our sister organization, the Japanese Red Cross Society. The Japan disaster hit home for Southern Californians because our area is long overdue for the “Big One,” an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 or higher. With Los Angeles County’s population of nearly 10 million, more people than ever before are at risk when the Big One hits. Like Japan and Chile, which experienced an 8.8 quake in 2010, we are vulnerable to earthquakes. However, unlike those countries, our community members are much less prepared. We saw this earthquake. Our study, released in April 2011, outlined how the Chileans’ personal preparedness efforts saved many lives during that terrible quake. These recent earthquakes reinforce how urgent it is for us to prepare our communities for a catastrophic disaster. That’s why we are promoting “PrepareSoCal” – a multi-year campaign to create more resilient communities that are better equipped to help each other prevent, prepare for and respond to life-threatening disasters. Preparedness starts with you. Please join us in taking the necessary steps to become personally prepared, and then help others reach this goal. For more information about the campaign and what you can do to help, please visit PrepareSoCal.org. Paul Schulz CEO, Los Angeles Region Jeff Sakaguchi Chair, Los Angeles Region You Make It Possible The American Red Cross Los Angeles Region provides vital services to 272 L.A. County We’re able to provide these services thanks to a corps of 3,185 dedicated volunteers and the generosity of our donors. The American Red Cross puts these donations to good use. We are proud to tell donors that we invest an average of 91 cents of every dollar in humanitarian services and programs, well above the industry standard. How do we do it? By practicing what we preach: preparedness. We train our volunteers. We plan ahead for the types of disasters that strike in our communities. And we train individuals, businesses and community groups, so that they too can be prepared. about how we help our neighbors—down the street, across the country and around the world. The Red Cross L.A. Region provided services to the communities in our region through a network of seven local Red Cross chapters: Arcadia, Antelope Valley, Glendale, Claremont, Santa Monica, San Gabriel Pomona Valley and Los Angeles. Re Cross volunteers Angela De Rozario of Red Santa Monica and John Luong of Hawthorne Sa help residents displaced by an L.A. house he committed volunteers. co Down the Street Local Disaster Relief We’re ready to respond to disasters 7 days a week, 365 days a year in our community, providing shelter, food, clothing and emotional support at no cost to those in need. The Red Cross Los Angeles Region is part of a nationwide network of Red Cross chapters that work together to provide relief during large-scale, as well as smaller disasters. home, possessions and sense of security. We assisted a total of 1,867 community members. These include individuals, families and groups of people sharing a dwelling. In December 2010, the Red Cross was called by the L.A. Fire Dept. to assist 21 residents of a two-story home in Boyle Heights. Most of the clients were Mariachi musicians who made their living performing at the comfort kits and lodging to the 20 residents. Opening Shelters for Fire Evacuees If a disaster displaces a large number of residents, the Red Cross will often open a shelter mid-Wilshire area spent seven days at the Robert F. Kennedy Community School, which had just opened its doors to students in September 2010. Mark Woodhouse was one of the 537 people who received assistance from the Red Cross at L.A. Region disaster shelters. possessions, only what’s important to you.” (Mark took his Labrador/German Shepherd dog.) At the shelter, Woodhouse received meals, snacks, hygiene items, like a toothbrush, assistance in replacing his medication, and emotional assistance in starting over after the he said. Responding to Home Fires Disaster volunteers Jamie Hoffman from the Claremont Chapter and Roxanne Schorbach from the San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter respond to a home fire in Glendora. The fire completely destroyed the home, and the Red Cross provided the family with housing and food. This was one of 363 home fires the Red Cross L.A. Region responded to during the year. Down the Street Serving the Military, Their Families and Veterans When someone in the military is faced with a family emergency or a death, the Red Cross provides around-the-clock emergency communications, relaying urgent messages anywhere in the world. Just ask Whittier resident Sgt. Peter Graves, a soldier stationed in Iraq whose mother had been diagnosed with cancer and was hospitalized. Joe Leal, a family readiness support assistant with the U. S. Army Reserves in El Monte, knew time was of the essence after visiting Graves’ mother in the hospital. Leal worked within 72 hours. Fortunately, Graves’ ordeal had a happy ending, and he was home in time to help speed his mother’s recovery. The Red Cross Los Angeles Region provides support to all active-duty military members, National Guard and Reserve members, veterans and their families. During 2011, the Red Cross L.A. Region briefed 4,214 people about our services through the “Get to Know Us Before You Need Us” program; and provided services to 1,715 members of the Armed Forces and their families. Relaying Urgent Messages The American Red Cross assisted Whittier resident Sgt. Peter Graves return home from Iraq to be with his mother after she was diagnosed with cancer and hospitalized. Military families rely on Red Cross-verified communications, which help commanders decide when to grant leave. Making Sure Blood Is Available When Needed Many of us have either needed blood or know someone who has needed it. The Red Cross serves the needs of communities across the U.S. by providing 43 percent of the nation’s blood supply. In the Los Angeles Region, the Red Cross collected 284,352 units of blood from community members in fiscal year 2011. If you are at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more and are generally in good health, please give the gift that keeps on giving --- make an appointment to donate blood at (800) 448-3543. Down the Street CPR Saves Lives Edward Merhabskie never thought he was a candidate for a heart attack. The 53-year-old supervisor at Senior Aerospace SSP in Burbank exercises regularly and hasn’t touched a doughnut in 35 years. Just after lunch in Nov. 2010, Merhabskie suffered cardiac arrest. A co-worker, Rick Cruz, said, “I heard him gasping for air, and he was turning purple.” Cruz, who has taken Red Cross CPR and First Aid courses at work, acted quickly. He began CPR and continued until paramedics arrived. Hospital personnel commended Cruz and said he saved his co-worker’s life. In addition to training 131,177 individuals in CPR, first aid, aquatics and water safety, the L.A. Region trained 9,716 individuals in California Child Care, Nurse Assistant Training and other safety classes. International Services, Holocaust Tracing When Martine Zoller was young, she would ask her father, Joseph, why he had a number tattooed on his arm. Joseph jokingly told her that it was his parents’ telephone number, in case he ever got lost. The truth was that Joseph was a Holocaust survivor. When Joseph died, Martine and her sister, Cheryl, wanted to learn more about what happened to their father during the Holocaust. They turned to the American Red Cross Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Center, which conducts searches for family members missing or killed in the Holocaust. In March, 2011, new data surfaced. L.A. Region International Services caseworkers provided the sisters with an original copy of Joseph’s prisoner number — B6937. He was at Joseph’s father and mother. As part of a worldwide humanitarian network, the Los Angeles Region assisted with 187 Holocaust and international tracing cases in 2011. Be a Lifesaver Rick Cruz received a lifesaving medal from the Red Cross for saving the life of his co-worker, Edward Merhabskie. The Red Cross L.A. Region provides CPR and First Aid training classes for employees at workplaces throughout the Southland. To register for a Health and Safety class, please call 800-627-7000. Across the Country Through a network of nearly 600 chapters, 36 blood services regions and a presence on military installations across the country, the American Red Cross helps people when they need it most: when disaster strikes; when a hospital patient is in need of lifesaving blood; when a military family needs emergency assistance; and when people want to learn the skills needed to protect themselves and their family. In January, Red Cross workers operated shelters from Florida to Connecticut to help those affected by storms. Severe weather continued into February as a massive winter storm buried the country in ice and snow from the Rocky Mountains to Maine. The Red Cross responded in 19 states, offering food, comfort and a safe place to stay to hundreds of people. Multiple disasters in spring 2011 made it one of the deadliest seasons in U.S. history. A severe outbreak of tornadoes across the South and Midwest—which hit communities such as Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Joplin, Mo.—took lives and destroyed homes. Red Cross workers were on the ground immediately to help, providing shelter for people whose homes were damaged or destroyed, and fanning out across affected areas to assess the damage. Red Cross nurses and mental health workers were also deployed to help people cope with the aftermath of these disasters. spring, Texas grappled with the opposite extreme, as an exceptional drought continued were threatened or destroyed. and distributing 1.5 million relief items. Nearly 140 disaster volunteers from the Red Cross L.A. Region spent a minimum of two weeks helping at national disaster sites in 2011. Preparing SoCal for a Catastrophic Disaster Studies have shown that being prepared is the most critical step in a community’s ability to recover after a major earthquake. To encourage Southern Californians to make preparedness a priority, the L.A. Region is promoting PrepareSoCal — a three-year campaign with the goal of creating more resilient communities that are better equipped to help each other prevent, prepare for and respond to life-threatening disasters. In addition to promoting personal preparedness, we are increasing our capacity to feed and shelter those residents who will turn to the Red Cross for help after a quake hits. We plan to increase the number of shelter spaces in our region from 210,000 to 500,000. To do this, we will continue to develop partnerships with cities and local governments, as we’ve done recently with L.A. County Parks and Recreation, L.A. Community College District, Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District, and cities including Burbank, Santa Clarita, and Hawthorne. We are also working to increase our ability to serve and distribute meals from a current 1.8 million to 4 million meals per day in the next three years. Chicken of the Sea is just one of the vendors in 2011 that agreed to work with the Red Cross to provide food products when disaster strikes. Southern California is one of the most at-risk areas for earthquakes, which is why we are promoting PrepareSoCal. As part of the L.A. Region’s community education preparedness efforts, we distributed information --- which is in Spanish and several other languages --- to 102,017 individuals in fiscal year 2011 at events and through other channels. Our Committed Volunteer Team The Red Cross is defined by the time, commitment and dedication of its volunteers. This year, 3,185 volunteers helped provide direct services to the communities in the Los Angeles Region. This includes 717 youth volunteers who are primarily affiliated with the region’s 38 high school youth clubs. Three volunteers who exemplify this 3,000-plus member team are the winners of the 2011 Regional Volunteer of the Year awards: Bob Carey, Mark Lim and Jerome Thierry. Carey is a volunteer photographer and videographer who helps the Red Cross tell its story through visual images; Lim is a master of disaster logistics and a committed community presenter; and Thierry, who began volunteering in 1977 as a Red Cross youth member, has worked at countless large and small disasters and makes himself available day and night to help others. To learn more about the variety of volunteer positions available at the Red Cross, please visit www.redcrossla.org/volunteer. L.A. Region volunteers Mark Lim, Bob Carey and Jerome Thierry received the 2011 Regional Volunteers of the Year award. Our Donors Saluting Our Generous Los Angeles Region Donors Within weeks after the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that rocked Japan on March 11, 2011, thousands of Los Angeles Region-based businesses, foundations, organizations, family foundations and community members opened their wallets for Japan relief. Many groups and individuals, like actor Josh Duhamel, were creative in their fundraising efforts. Working with the Santa Monica Red Cross, Duhamel hosted the “Youth Run 4 Japan,” in which he and his wife, singer Stacy Ferguson (Fergie), and other celebrities joined 4,000 young people in a 2-mile run on the Santa Monica beach to support Japan relief efforts. The Los Angeles Region hosted several fundraising events during fiscal year 2011 to support local programs and services, including: the November 2010 Heroes Breakfast, honoring former Los Angeles Mayor and business leader Richard Riordan, ABC7 and Southern California Edison (SCE); a New Year’s Eve Gala held at The Craven Estate (headquarters for the San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter Red Cross) featuring a Monte Carlo gaming room and dancing; the Red Tie Affair in April 2011 at Santa Monica’s Fairmont Hotel honoring actress and comedian Betty White, Josh Duhamel and a remarkable team of doctors and medical specialists from Saint John's Health Center; and the 20th Annual Fritz Coleman Comedy Night held in Glendale, which featured the NBC4 weatherman and four stand-up comedians. We are deeply grateful to all Los Angeles Region donors who have made contributions to assist those affected by international, national and local disasters, as well as the many programs and services provided here in the L.A. area. We especially applaud those members of our giving societies, including the Tiffany Circle, a network of women leaders and philanthropists who each donate at least $10,000 annually, and the McCoy Legacy Society, forward-thinking individuals who have made a donation through a planned gift. We also deeply appreciate those donors who remember the Red Cross in their wills, trusts and estates. Your support makes our lifesaving services possible. Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the American Red Cross (left) and Dr. Robert Amonic, chair, Red Cross Santa Monica Board of Directors, congratulate actress and comedian Betty White, who received the American Red Cross "Crystal Cross” award in April 2011 at the Red Tie Affair. Around the World With your support, the American Red Cross responds to disasters, builds safer communities and educates future humanitarians around the world every day. This past year, we worked with our partners in the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network to assist 229 million people in 76 countries. Responding to Disasters When disasters hit, the local Red Cross or Red Crescent can often handle the crisis alone, but sometimes they reach out for help. The American Red Cross helps meet urgent needs by deploying disaster specialists, mobilizing relief supplies and contributing assistance to more than 8.6 million people, from Japan to Haiti. For example, after a devastating earthquake and tsunami hit Japan in March 2011, the American Red Cross joined the Japanese Red Cross to help provide water and new appliances, as well as repair damaged medical facilities. As of June 2011, the American Red Cross has provided $230.8 million to the Japanese Red Cross and other partners to support relief operations, reaching more than 200,000 people with assistance. Last year, the American Red Cross continued to help people in Haiti rebuild and recover from the January 2010 earthquake. The Red Cross is helping Haitians rebuild their lives through activities such as constructing homes, delivering clean water, supporting hospitals, improving sanitation and trash disposal, providing income-generating opportunities and Building Safer, Healthier Communities The American Red Cross works with its Red Cross and Red Crescent partners to build safer, more resilient communities around the world, reducing the devastating effects of natural disasters and health crises. Continuing the highly successful Measles Initiative, the American Red Cross helped lead the program toward vaccinating 1 billion children in the last decade, putting us on the continued path toward eradicating this deadly disease. Since the Measles Initiative began in 2001, measles deaths have decreased by 78 percent worldwide. Educating Future Humanitarians Humanitarian principles are at the core of the Red Cross mission, and continuing this work requires inspiring and engaging the next generation. Across the United States, American Red Cross chapters help both adults and youth understand International Humanitarian Law and its relevance to our daily lives and the issues we face as a country. Last year, the American Red Cross educated 139,000 people in more than 40 states in International Humanitarian Law, teaching students about humanitarian issues around the world and the critical need to protect civilians as well as combatants in times of war Children try out the new hand washing taps set up by the Japanese Red Cross at an evacuation center in Ishinomaki. 2011 at a Glance The American Red Cros s: • Worked to reconnect more than 5,300 familie s separated by internation al wars and disasters. • Equipped communitie s and Red Cross partners in 33 countries to be better prepared for the next disaster. • Helped protect 220 million children worldwi de from measles in 2011, and 1 billion in the last deca de.
