THE MOST INTERESTING SOLUTIONS IN THE WASHING AREA Italian Life Style Cover mixer Eno by Dornbracht Editor Antonio Greco Editor-in-Chief Raffaella Razzano [email protected] Editorial Office Carla Cavaliere, senior editor [email protected] Assistant Editor Anna Alberti [email protected] Contributors Fabrizio Gomarasca, co-ordination, Davide Cattaneo, Paola Leone, David Lowry, tranlations Graphic design and layout Fabio Berrettini, Cristina Menotti With the new Eno single lever mixer, presented successfully at the recent edition of Living Kitchen and available on the market as of next July, Dornbracht continues its Water Zones project. One particular feature of the taps is the notable reduction in energy consumption thanks to a control lever which in the neutral lever position is poised to supply cold rather than a mix of hot and cold water as is the case with traditional mixers. Eno, by Sieger Design, presents a clear formal style comprising a cylindrical body and an ergonomically-shaped with built-in retractable spray head. The Water Zones programme, borrowed from professional kitchen design, defines the separation of spaces according to the different processes involving water: preparing, washing, cutting, draining, rinsing, cleaning and quenching thirst. The new collection of sinks breaks down into over 20 individual and 8 dual solutions, each of which offers the best interpretation of the various stages in working in the kitchen (divided into four functions: preparing, cooking, cleaning and drinking), while the Universal version is designed for kitchens of reduced size and combines the various functions. Which is where the green credentials of this new mixer lie. Business Media Editorial Director Mattia Losi Owner and Publishing House Il Sole 24 ORE S.p.A. And a lot of the exciting new design developments are taking place in kitchen hoods, with some quite remarkable new models that double as lamps and indeed at first glance might be mistaken for designer lamps, were it not for their telescopic systems that reveal or conceal powerful extraction motors and filters descending from on high to treat the fumes produced in the stovetop area. Then there are other lighting components: useful illumination points that provide practical help for anyone preparing food on the worktop. For this function there are now linear LED lamps, the new frontier of efficient, low-cost lighting, designed for attachment under the wall units. Similarly, various models of kitchen have such lighting systems fitted inside the cabinetry, such as Trim, from Dada, which features a fully illuminated work station rather than a simple panel the wall and floor units. Another example is Barrique, from Erenestomeda, whose BRIGHT IDEAS Skyled wall units are made entirely of smoked glass and fitted with LEDs that diffuse light throughout the whole room. LEDs are also being used for more “extreme” solutions, such as the home greenhouses produced by Arclinea and by Poggenpohl - for growing herbs indoors or softer options such as the light points that fit into the backs of Scic’s kitchens, and, in the case of MK, take the form of a strip running under the worktop or along the plinth to create intriguing accents and moods. Salvarani uses LED strips to highlight its new panelling systems and introduces powerful light sources to backlight panels and illuminate the entire space. Other functional lighting under the wall units is seen in designs by Composit and Veneta Cucine, while Matteo Thun enters the world of kitchen design with an emotionally appealing design that illuminates a worktop made from a slab of alabaster which as a result seems to give off a special luminous energy all of its own. 4 | ambientecucinaproject | January February 2011 | issue 12 012 The design of MK’s new model, with 12mm-thick fronts and worktops “lightens” the kitchen in an all-contemporary style. The photo shows the monobloc island unit in Corian® Glacier White, in which the sink is incorporated as a single element; opposite, the run of wall-hung base units, with flush-fitting glass ceramic hob and, above, the Extra hood, embellished by a black Corian® panel and equipped with a smart fume extraction system activated and regulated by sensors; on the wall the panelling system with Corian® shelves. The suspended volumes are equipped with “strategically-positioned” light sources. Fronts - available finishes Corian® in 8 shades, ebony, teak and walnut; textured matt or glossy lacquered finish. Tops - available finishes Corian®, steel, wood. Lighting elements LED strips, used to create attractive accent effects and fitted into the groove of the base units, between the cabinet doors and the worktop, and below the suspended cooking unit, creating the illusion of a volume hovering in space. MK STYLE | à www.mkcucine.com issue 12 | January February 2011 | ambientecucinaproject | 5 trend ECOCOMPATTA Ecocompatta is the name of this monobloc kitchen, which fits in perfectly with the concept of eco-sustainability. From the design of the materials used and the production process to the installation of the finished kitchen, the appliances and all the packaging, everything is designed to be “green”. The other idea behind the project is that of reduction: in terms of form, size, models offered, complexity of assembly, plumbing and wiring and of cost. When closed, the module is a box-shaped unit slightly detached from the wall and looks rather like a large dresser, with a central section screened off by a shutter. Behind this is the work area with monobloc top and sink, induction hob, chopping board and sliding draining rack, hood, organised, rear-lit crockery draining wall unit; the two side columns contain the appliances. A compact kitchen designed VENETA CUCINE | PAOLO RIZZATTO | à www.venetacucine.it 6 | ambientecucinaproject | January February 2011 | issue 12 for installation in a traditional kitchen or as a corner unit in a bed-sit, serviced apartment, office or hotel suite. It measures 308x75 cm; height 211 cm. Fronts - available finishes Black or white matt lacquerwork. Tops - available finishes Black or white two-sided antibacterial laminate. Lighting elements A dual run of lights, above and below the wall units, to illuminate the worktop area where food is being prepared. MYA A young person’s design, based on a mixture of materials and finishes to create kitchens in a contemporary style. The clean look of the fronts, featuring horizontal and vertical grooves, is created by the completely smooth fronts with handle built into the lower edge. The photo shows the version with peninsula washing and cooking area with open shelving. Behind, the wall fitted with central shelves (90 cm wide) and bottle rack, with all units above; the tall units at the side are finished in black Evo open-pore laminate. Fronts - available finishes Shiny white acrylic, Evo open-pore laminate, matt Evo open-pore laminate. Tops - available finishes Unicolor laminate, granite, steel. LIGNUM ET LAPIS The exciting new feature of the visually striking Lignum et Lapis furnishing solution, designed by Antonio Citterio is its wooden slatwork finish. From an architectural point of view, the model presents two contrasting features: the storage function, which draws attention to the innovative look of the fronts, and the island workstation, described as a piece of Industrial Sculpture, a self-supporting island block with a central structural element and two adjoining wings. The photo shows the Carrara marble block; above is a ceiling-mounted “multi-level” element made of steel, with hood, shelf and home greenhouse. Fronts - available finishes Solid larch or Nordic oak in slats of different widths variously spaced. Tops - available finishes The island is made entirely of Carrara marble, or is alternatively available in a stainless steel version, with steel worktop and larchwood snack bar. Lighting elements The home greenhouse, which can be incorporated into the ceiling-mounted “multi-level” element. It comprises a panel with battery-operated low consumption lighting, which creates the warm micro-climate need to grow herbs and spices. ARCLINEA | ANTONIO CITTERIO | à www.arclinea.it Lighting elements The wall units, finished on all four sides and available with or without illuminated floor, measure 60, 36, 90 and 120 cm in width. The base units can be fitted with LED lighting under the top. COMPOSIT | STUDIO DELTA | à www.composit.it trend +ARTESIO The +Artesio model fits into a global approach to the living space, in which architecture, home and kitchen blend into a co-ordinated three-dimensional whole. At the heart of Hadi Teherani’s design is the idea of the “kitchen within a kitchen”. “People like to live and work in the kitchen at the same time,” explains architect Teherani. “For this reason, with +Artesio, we have created a private area inside the kitchen itself, in which the functions of washing and cooking are circumscribed, but only conceptually. The idea of a private space is heightened by a luminous bridge-style “canopy”, underneath which you really feel like you’re in another space. TRIM The Trim model reinterprets traditional kitchen furniture functions and components in an elegant, understated design. Designed by Dante Bonuccelli, Trim offers differentiated functional elements with which each design can be adapted to specific requirements. The U-shaped composition shown in the photo is designed to offer maximum functionality for food preparation on the worktop. The handy wall-panelling storage units illuminated from the wall units ensure that cooking utensils are always easy to access. Fronts - available finishes Matt and gloss lacquerwork; laminate; various types of wood. Tops - available finishes Steel, quartzite, marble, granite, laminate, Corian® and coloured glass. Lighting elements On the 240-cm wall units and the wall-panelling storage units. The wall units with hideaway shutter fronts are fitted with service lights that switch on automatically, acid-etched shelves and built-in fume extraction system. The wall-panelling storage units that come right down to the worktop are fitted with their own service lights and electrified technological bar, as well as with acid-etched shelves and utensil rack accessories. The wall-panelling storage units are 60, 90 or 120 cm long and fitted with extra-bright acid-etched glass fronts that slide back and hide away in side the top by means of a vertical slide mechanism. Tops - available finishes Brushed stainless steel, glass, Corian®. Lighting elements The luminous “canopy” and the home greehouse. The luminous “canopy” rests bridge fashion on columns and incorporates the elements needed to produce light, air and music. The home greenhouse for growing herbs incorporated into the cabinetry is also illuminated. POGGENPOHL HADI TEHERANI | à www.poggenpohl.de BARRIQUE The Barrique system, designed by Rodolfo Dordoni, takes its inspiration from the traditional Italian love of good food and wine. The flavours and aromas of different Italian regions are conjured up through the use of authentic materials and nuances such as Chardonnay glass for the wall units, wood for the bottle rack systems, bleached canaletto walnut for the Douelle handle and thick marble for the worktops. In the glossy white lacquered solution, the central work counter comes with Deck semi-polished steel top; the Flash Lock hood is fitted over the worktop of the wall-mounted base units, in Silvergrey granite. Fronts - available finishes Gloss and matt lacquerwork, steel, bleached canaletto walnut, ERNESTOMEDA | RODOLFO DORDONI Decanter front with steel-finished aluminium frame and panel in laminated glass in Pinot, Merlot or Chardonnay colours, Glossix gloss or matt lacquerwork. Tops - available finishes Red Levanto Turco and gold Calacatta marble, Silvergrey granite, polished steel (thickness: 3 cm), Corian®. Lighting elements The wall units with Chardonnay glass fronts with Vitre interior, with glass shelves and SkyLed inner LED lighting. | à www.ernestomeda.it issue 12 | January February 2011 | ambientecucinaproject | 9 trend MONOLITE As the name suggests, Monolite is a compact system, on which the fronts and worktops use the same tough covering materials. The purity of the volumes is heightened by the 45° cut of the fronts and the worktop. The picture shows a wall composition with fronts and worktop in Unicolor Cesar Brown laminate and push-pull wall units; the steel hob and sink fit flush with the worktop. Fronts - available finishes In thick Unicolor laminate, available in 12 different finishes and colours. Lighting elements The steel back is fitted with LED-based lighting; the glass hood has its own built-in lighting. HIGHTEAK Restrained design and high-quality materials are two main features of the flagship model in the Salvarani collection: Highteak, designed by Castiglia Associati. The elegance of the model is seen particularly well in the styling of the quality wood cabinet fronts; in the horizontal continuity created by the perfect alignment of the large base units and low wall units; in the purity of the fronts with built-in handle on the upper edge of the fronts. Among the new features that have freshened up the look of the model, the new hood built into the wall unit, the magnetic panels onto which the shelves are hooked and the new plant-holder trays, a micro-system for growing herbs and spices in the home. Fronts - available finishes Teak, canaletto walnut. rosewood, ebony; stippled and glossy lacquerwork, Unicolor laminate. Tops - available finishes Corian®, steel, laminates, marble, granite, stone, polished satin-finish or brushed quartz. Lighting elements The shelves with lines of LEDs between the back and the wall panel system; the rear-lit wooden wall panel system, for use as an extra wall item or to attach shelves and wall units. SALVARANI | CASTIGLIA ASSOCIATI | à www.salvaranicucine.it LA CUCINA It was a shared passion for wood in its most natural form that brought together Maurizio Riva and Matteo Thun who, working alongside different partners, created La Cucina, a project with great emotional appeal presented at the “Living Kitchen” 2011 fair in Cologne. La Cucina, based around the theme of environmental sustainability, is constructed using wood sourced from AHEC (the American Hardwood Export Council, the leading association for the field in the USA) and hinges on three main areas: a hearth, an area for food preparation and an area for food storage. It is made using salvaged American red oak, and the American black walnut used for the previous installation designed by Matteo Thun for Milan Design Capital 2010. Lighting elements Underlit alabaster worktop. It takes up very little space and offers two different sorts of lighting, thanks to its “tilting fin” feature. When the fin is in the closed position it produces diffused “comfort” lighting; in the open position the beam is focused accurately onto the surface below. Hettich’s Magic range includes integrated lighting solutions for kitchen furniture and other home and contract furnishing schemes. With its halogen, fluorescent and LED systems, the Magic range offers functional or mood lighting to satisfy the creative demands of interior designers, who have a detailed catalogue of products to choose from. One particularly interesting LED system in the Magic series is InnoLine, designed to illuminate the insides of drawers and bottoms of furniture units, which comes on automatically when the drawers are opened. Features Balance is a modular LED lighting system in four lengths: 45, 60, 90 and 120 cm. When the tilting fin is closed it measures 3.2 cm in width; when open 5.5 cm; height 4.5 cm. It can be fitted with one or more hooks which slide along the length of the lighting unit. Features InnoLine is a cold-light, built-in LED lighting appliance. It can be shortened to any length and is finished in aluminium and clear plastic. It is fitted with a built-in automatic sensor and runs off a 15-watt power unit, with 200-cm electrical cable and flat euro-plug. InnoLine is also guaranteed IP20 water resistant. L&S | à www.ls-light.com HETTICH | à www.hettich.com LUXIA The Luxia model from the new F-light Generation series of hoods looks like an extraction hood and chandelier rolled into one. ON SINKS WE ARE NOW SEEING NEW COMPOSITE MATERIALS AND A RETURN TO THE USE OF CERAMIC WITH NEW DESIGN FEATURES AND QUALITIES. WHEN IT COMES TO TAPWARE, MEANWHILE, ENERGY SAVING IS THE GUIDING LIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGN DEVELOPMENTS. AND IN THE FIELD OF DRAWERS AND OPENING SYSTEMS, IT’S ALL ABOUT TRYING TO FIND THE MOST ERGONOMIC SOLUTIONS FOR THOSE EVERYDAY GESTURES. INNOVATIVE DETAILS by Raffaella Razzano and Davide Cattaneo Duravit Sink by Philippe Starck DESIGNING MATERIALS > SPECIAL DETAILS ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING DESIGN AREAS AT THE MOMENT IS EXPERIMENTATION WITH NEW MATERIALS, COMBINED WITH A RETURN TO TRADITIONAL MATERIALS LIKE CERAMIC AND PORCELAIN, REVISITED IN A MORE MODERN GUISE. BLANCO Functionality, ergonomics and great aesthetic appeal for the new Blancoaxon II 6 S sink made of PuraPlus® porcelainised ceramic, an extremely high-quality material that is resilient and highly durable. It features a generous tub coupled with a handy extra small tub and uses Blanco’s AXen concept, for a more fluid flow along the sink’s horizontal axis. It comes in seven different colours to suit the schemes of any type of kitchen (Black, Alu Grey, Crystal White, White, Jasmine, Vanilla, Cashmere) into which it installs perfectly thanks to its particularly slimline edge. à www.blancoitaly.com ELLECI Sirex is a new built-in sink made of a composite material designed with a flat aesthetic that incorporates two new patented ideas from the firm. For the first time it makes use of the innovative space-saving drain unit (SIR), which until now has only been featured on electrical sinks. The composite material exceeds the previous upper tolerance limit and can now withstand temperatures as high as 250 degrees. All the models in the Sirex range are fitted with an Anti-Heat Plate to deal with high temperatures, that is to say it retains the heat by means of spacer elements on the draining board that create a gap between the plate and the sink itself. Future developments of this plate will involve the application of different materials that produce different aesthetic results. One extra feature regards size: the Sirex range measures 51.5 cm across, which is one and a half centimetres wider than standard sizes, a feature that allows for the installation of a range of accessories on the edge of the sink. à www.elleci.com 16 | ambientecucinaproject | January February 2011 | issue 12 DETAILS SPECIAL < SCHOCK Cristadur® is a material patented by Schock® with the use of nanotechnology to make the sink even sturdier and easier to clean as well as creating a remarkably silky effect that gives the surface an unparalleled gleam and makes it extra-resistant to dirt and scratching. Horizont is a new sink which, as its name suggests, is based on the horizontal movement of the lines on what is a classic yet up-to-date design, and an ideal choice to bring a feel of great elegance to any kind of kitchen. Horizon comes in five colours (Carbonium, Ivory, Silver Grey, Magma Black, Polaris White) and in four models: single sink + draining board (780x500 mm), double sink (860x500 mm), one full and one half sink + draining board (1.000x500 mm) and double sink + draining board (1.160x500 mm). à www.schock.it PAMAR Björn Dahlström is the designer of Warp, the furniture handle in the Pamar Porcelain collection that with an ever-changing appearance that means it never seems to look the same. Organic forms in which sinuous movement and restraint alternate in a collection of lines and curves that create a highly distinctive quality, creating an elaborate irregular geometric effect. Complex and understated at the same time, the choice of glossy white as the only production colour defines the design still further. Warp comes in six different forms for each of the three available sizes. à www.pamar.it issue 12 | January February 2011 | ambientecucinaproject | 17 > SPECIAL DETAILS DESIGNING MATERIALS FRANKE Franke’s Fragranite range has become even more unique thanks to the exquisite stainless steel inserts on the sinks in the Mythos Fusion series. The steel grooves on the draining board are now coated in Fragranite Durakleen, Franke’s exclusive material made from silica and resins that produces a surface which is even more hygienic, smoother and more resilient. The three elegant steel details on the draining board emphasise the extreme elegance of the Mythos Fusion sink, which comes in the timelessly classy black and white. à www.franke.it PLADOS The One range features simple, minimalist forms that make it ideal for trendy, modern interior design schemes. The sinks in the series can be installed both in the traditional built-in version or in more innovative flush-fitting and under-counter solutions. The product carries the CE mark and is particularly scratchproof, heatproof, knockproof and stainproof. The sinks come with “MicroStop” anti-bacterial and “UltraClean” protection to ensure perfect cleaning and maximum hygiene. à www.plados.it 18 | ambientecucinaproject | January February 2011 | issue 12 DURAVIT BY STARCK COLLECTION THE RIGHT ANGLE OF DESIGN Starck comes to the kitchen! Freedom, irreverence, playfulness and a unique and quite remarkable approach to the world of product design: no other architect or designer has raised quite as many eyebrows and stirred up as much controversy as Philippe Starck, who Duravit has now called upon to tackle one of the focal points of kitchen activities: the sink, an area in which it is extremely important to combine quality and aesthetic appeal with functional efficiency. Washing the dishes, cleaning vegetables, draining pasta: Philippe Starck offers a new take on these basic everyday actions, restoring their primary nature through a completely new form and adding to it by working on the principle of paring down to essentials and on the idea of beauty generated by simplicity of lines and the luminosity of the ceramic material. The main principle that informs and is omnipresent on the new sink, made of a ceramic created from a special compound that makes it sturdy and particularly knockproof, is that of the right angle. The form is strictly quadrangular, there is a raised side and the clear contours display regularity and harmony, offering at the same time generous surfaces to stand things on and, of course, a roomy basin. The surface of the draining board, which is plain and simple with no grooves, simply tilts downwards, while the sides of the actual basin are raised up higher than usual. This results in a simple prominent rectangle standing higher than the worktop surface and forming an independent container, a basin whose slimline side walls reinforce the sense of extreme elegance. The central element that connects the worktop and the basin is a hollow that also serves as the overflow safety function: if water reaches this hollow, any excess flows down in a cascade onto the draining Philippe Starck (ph. Jean-Baptiste Mondino ) board and away down the drain. Attention to detail is also seen in the drain plug, which is not screwed into position but can be easily removed for cleaning. The large size of the tub (430x310x190 mm) ensures plenty of room for manoeuvre, making it easier to wash even bulky items like oven trays. And thanks to the wooden chopping board, two different working heights can be created, catering to different user requirements. The sink unit as a whole comes in two sizes: 1000x510 mm and 900x510 mm. The draining board can be positioned to the left or to the right and there is also a version without a work surface but with an even larger basin (775x310x190 mm). Starck K, which can be fitted flush to the worktop, comes in White, Pergamon, Anthracite and Chestnut; there are tap holes for installation of all the main models of taps and mixers. à www.duravit.it issue 12 | January February 2011 | ambientecucinaproject | 19 ® MAKING THE MOST OF SPACE FIRMS ARE FOCUSING THEIR ATTENTION ON DRAWERS AND OPENING SYSTEMS, ALWAYS LOOKING FOR NEW WAYS OF FACILITATING MOVEMENT AND GENERALLY SIMPLIFYING THINGS IN THE KITCHEN. THERE ARE PLENTY OF MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL SOLUTIONS ON OFFER, ALL OF THEM ERGONOMICALLY EFFICIENT AND DESIGNED TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE AVAILABLE SPACE. BLUM A highly functional, elegantly designed set of handy kitchen utensils from Blum, including a plate rack, a spice rack, a knife rack and a film/foil roll rack. The rolls of cling film and aluminium foil are kept in a new plastic housing, which can be integrated into the “Orga-Line” internal divider system or attached to the bottom of the drawer with a special fixture. Blum has created a bar that attaches to the end of the transparent film to ensure that it pulls out without folds so that the required piece can be neatly cut off ready for use. The entire cling film roll holder can be removed from the drawer if necessary. à www.blum.com HETTICH A solution that creates new ways of satisfying the functional and aesthetic demands of modern living: the electro-mechanical system Easys, used in combination with the mechanical push-to-open function for the Quadro runners, ensures that any kind of drawer will open easily and to any position, even without using the hands. Once open, the drawer can be locked into any position while a special programme prevents any involuntary opening up of the furniture units, so even if someone leans against the fronts of a certain period of time the drawers stay closed. A special protection system guards against collisions and prevents damage to the fronts or injury to the user of the kitchen in the case of corner solutions: when one drawer is opened an optionally available cable de-activates those of neighbouring units so that they cannot collide. à www.hettich.com 20 | ambientecucinaproject | January February 2011 | issue 12 ROMAGNA PLASTIC The Première collection designed by Paolo Nava and Fabio Casiraghi, comprises three lines: systems for separate waste collection, a range of wooden cutlery racks and plate racks for basket units (at an advanced design stage). This means there is now a complete range of articles to kit out the kitchen’s interior spaces with accessories that are attractively and harmoniously styled. Most prominent among them is the wooden cutlery rack, an essential element that is an integral part of the drawer itself and offers a functional response to the need to keep knives, forks, spoons and other items tidily stored away in a drawer. Exclusive details and quality materials (wood, satin-finish stainless steel, cork and Corian®) are attractively combined to produce elegant contrasts. Thanks to the modular nature of the elements, the range is available for base units measuring 1200, 900 and 600 mm. à www.rp-premiere.com GRASS With Kinvaro, Grass presents an opening system for tip-out fronts which is also a modern approach to organising the space inside cupboard units and ensuring that their entire height is used. Sturdy and reliable, easy to use and whisper quiet, Kinvaro is a convenient, well-designed solution. There are three models in all: Kinvaro L-80, S-35 and F-20; the latter two are power-operated and equipped with an emergency function, thanks to which they can also be opened and closed manually in the event of power failure. Kinvaro S-35 is designed to be used with units of all heights and widths currently on the market. à www.grass.at issue 12 | January February 2011 | ambientecucinaproject | 21 > SPECIAL DETAILS MAKING THE MOST OF SPACE COMPAGNUCCI UP, DOWN AND OUT OF SIGHT! The Tiramigiù collection from Compagnucci comprises a set of advanced products on which automation takes functional efficiency to a whole new level: this is machinery at our beck and call and it does away with many of the actions and movements we otherwise have to make as we go about our kitchen tasks. The system of remote-controlled electrical electronic and mechanical elements on Tiramigiù brings the shelves in the wall units right down to worktop level bringing everything stored in the spaces higher up within easy reach. The up-down movement can be activated either by applying pressure to the opening cabinet cupboard at 90° or by remote control. The range is made up of a series of vertically moving columns for the back of the wall unit, for corner wall units, and pantographic systems for wall units to house utensils and crockery (Phanto), TVs, PCs or small electrical appliances (RetroTiramigiù), which when no longer needed go back into place behind the cabinet fronts leaving the worktop completely free. RondO’ is particularly interesting: technically defined as a “vertically moving island column”, it is in fact a Tiramigiù fitted with a draining rack whose material and circular shape calls to mind a designer hood. RondO’ is ideal for kitchens in which the sink is built into an island unit. à www.compagnucci.com 22 | ambientecucinaproject | January February 2011 | issue 12 > SPECIAL DETAILS SUSTAINABLE CHOICES MOST TAP MAKERS ARE FOCUSING THEIR SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS ON SAVING WATER. Grohe Blue® features a dual distribution system: one channel supplies and mixes hot and cold water like an ordinary tap while another filters the drinking water arriving from the mains supply, thereby removing impurities and other substances that would otherwise alter its smell and taste. The functions are separated in such a way that the filtered water never comes into contact with the mixed water. At the heart of the design is a multi-level filter that combines two important technologies to improve the flavour, odour and hardness of water. Grohe Blue® won the 2010 iF Product Design Award 2010. à www.grohe.it 24 | ambientecucinaproject | January February 2011 | issue 12 DETAILS SPECIAL < INSINKERATOR Elegance and practicality are incorporated into everyday domestic life: Insinkerator presents its new boiling water dispensers which can supply up to 100 cups of filtered water at 98° in just one hour. These easy-to-install appliances give considerable energy savings since they require less energy than a 40-watt bulb and heat only the amount of water that is actually needed, thereby avoiding waste. Of particular use when preparing hot drinks, pasta and sauces, the water supplied in this way can also be used to disinfect, thaw food, blanch vegetables and do many other things besides. à www.insinkerator.it RUBINETTERIE TEOREMA Jetto Kitchen adds to its collection of taps in the “Water Saving Philosophy” family: its response to the need for greater environmental awareness in product manufacture. This new kitchen mixer gives savings of over 40% on water consumption. Practicality, aesthetic appeal and technology come together on Jetto Kitchen, which features well-proportioned forms and elegantly combined volumes. A continuous line emerges from the worktop to describe a semi-circle as it forms the spout in a simple, lean-and-lovely design that is only enhanced by the attractive addition of a highly “conspicuous” control knob. à www.teoremaonline.it issue 12 | January February 2011 | ambientecucinaproject | 25 > SPECIAL DETAILS RONDA THE KITCHEN WITH THE CHANGING LOOK With Magnetika, Ronda Design (the design workshop of the Ronda Group, an industrial group which has been developing products involving the use of stainless steel for over forty years) presents an exclusive, patented system which exploits the natural phenomenon of the force of magnetic attraction for a virtually unlimited range of applications. One product that adopts this technology is Mask, a panel with a wood-based support, clad in a metal cover that aligns perfectly over it. The inner core of the support is made of MDF and covered in grey laminate into which the magnets that hold everything in place are sunk. The cover itself is made of a weld-free, folded metal sheet with moulded corners. Magnetic technology makes possible the rapid and efficient removal and replacement of the cladding and the consequent variation in the aesthetic and formal appearance of the unit or of the wall. This means that with Mask rooms in the home like the kitchen can be given any number of different looks, an infinite array of identities. The replacement operations are extremely simple and are carried out without any tools or outside help. The range comes in standard fingermark-resistant satin-finished steel in black, white and ivory, but any colour and pattern can be ordered from the firm providing minimum quantities are requested. The endless opportunities for personalisation offered by Mask are made possible by a process of sublimation that embeds images into any kind of surface for the cover. à www.rondadesign.it 26 | ambientecucinaproject | January February 2011 | issue 12 The special decoration technology used creates continuity of the image also on the sides of the panel, generating a considerable aesthetic advantage in the fitting together of different modules which can thus produce a seamless, uninterrupted image. For this reason too, then, the flexibility and modularity of the system are absolute, also from the point of view of size. It means that designers can create any kind of aesthetic solution and use the technology in an endless range of applications. Mask can indeed also be adopted as the top of a furniture unit and for worktops generally. news ERNESTOMEDA AND LISTONE GIORDANO, EXCLUSIVE SOLUTIONS FOR REAL ESTATE Two well-known Italian brands have decided to give concrete form to the collaborations they have already established in places like Spain and Cyprus. Ernestomeda (kitchens) and Listone Giordano (wood floors) have joined forces to improve their presence on the real estate market in Italy and on international markets. Ernestomeda has developed Contract Division, a structured team of professionals, to offer a complete range of services devoted to those involved in the real estate business, and designed to promote new initiatives and co-marketing activities with firms, with the aim of accelerating sales of home units from the early construction stage. Based in Milan, in open-plan premises (Ernestomeda Loft) spreading over 360 square metres it meets real estate professionals, architects, property developers and promoters by appointment. Contract Division’s business lever is that of giving value and prestige to property dealings, including the kitchen in the sale or rental specifications, thereby introducing a model already widely adopted abroad. Buyers are also offered exclusive, comprehensive consultancy services, with the possibility of personalising the kitchen included by the developers of the property being sold. The formula will soon be expanded with the forthcoming opening of two new spaces devoted to foreign contract business, in Barcelona and Cairo. à www.ernestomeda.it RIVA 1920 AND THUN: BACK TO BASICS Living Kitchen, the area devoted to the kitchen at the Cologne Furniture Fair (Imm), welcomed its many visitors with a Riva 1920 installation designed by Matteo Thun: La Cucina, a tribute to simplicity and conviviality, represented by a large hearth and a large table around which you cook, converse and dine. It represents a return to the main functions of the kitchen: storing, preparing and cooking food. The dominant material is wood, in this case American black walnut and American red oak. A kitchen which, says Thun, “is the opposite of the American kitchen where everything is hidden away and you have to have a good memory if you want to be able to find anything”. Memory seems to have inspired the designer, who likes working with wood. “The worn-away look and the sense of the passing of time is what 28 | ambientecucinaproject | January February 2011 | issue 12 I like most about wood,” Thun says. “Wood, not concrete, is the material of the 20th century. On rainy days, the wood used for interiors absorbs the humidity and makes us feel better and it also improves acoustics”. This is one of the reasons why Thun and Riva 1920 chose to use American red oak for the table and bench that complete the kitchen. It is the most abundant of America’s temperate forest woods, accounting for 35% of total resources. Sustainable forest management states in fact that these resources are the ones that should be exploited most. à www.riva1920.it news ELICA ENTERS THE CHINESE MARKET VENETA CUCINE’S DESIGN THINKING IN MALTA Design Thinking, that is to say designing beyond the product, involving places, objects, experiences and interactions to create a sense of sharing with the users of the product is the product development approach Veneta Cucine takes. Important in this process is Veneta Cucine’s collaboration of several years with Domus Academy, which has become little short of a research monitoring body and has given rise to three significant surveys on the world of kitchens, with their own relevant publications. And also to two new design projects: Ecocompatta (design Paolo Rizzatto) and Liquida (design Stefano Giovannoni and Elisa Gargan), presented at the last edition of Eurocucina. Now Veneta Cucine is taking its Design Thinking out into the world through its trading partners, who are turning their showrooms into places not just where sales are made but also into places of interaction, communication and transmission of Italian savoir faire. This was seen recently in Malta, where a series of design workshops were held at the C.Fino + Sons showroom, the most prestigious and accredited furnishings display space on the whole island. On this occasion, designers Paolo Rizzatto, Stefano Giovannoni, Dante Donegani and Giovanni Lauda talked to an audience of architects, interior designers and others involved in the business, describing their experiences designing with Veneta Cucine and their own personal conception of and approaches to design. It was a meeting at which various thoughts and ideas were expressed which, though different, shared the same desire to give new concrete replies, to devise products with closer links to reality, using original, rather than standardised idioms. The Elica Group recently took its plans to move onto the Chinese market one step further by taking part in the latest edition of 100% Design in Shanghai, which for the time showcased top firms from the world of contemporary interior design at the Exhibition Centre of Shanghai, with a showcase of furnishing complements, lighting products and bathroom furniture and floor and wall coverings. Elica’s presence at the event was boosted by the fact that it recently took out a majority shareholding in the capital of Putian, one of China’s top electrical appliance concerns and the first among its rivals to develop western-style kitchen hoods. A selection of Elica hoods with a major technology and design component was also presented at the exhibition “The Italian Apartment”, which promoted Italian savoir faire through a selection of iconic brands and products, all of which display the high quality and creative of Italian manufacturing. The façade, evocative of a typical historic Italian palazzo painted with a trompe-l’oeil effect, formed the backdrop for the presentation of furnishing accessories and other products designed by Italy’s foremost furnishings and design firms. One of Elica’s most interesting designs - one that is fast acquiring iconic status - is the visually striking “Pescecappa” designed by artist Gaetano Pesce, which comes in a numbered, diversified mini-series. This special edition is made up of fifteen unique items (all signed by the artist) that introduce an expressive design element into the kitchen, a highly personal creation by Pesce that interprets Elica’s innovative spirit, subverting traditional ideas about industrial production and the normal relations with users. Because of its nature, this “auteur hood” – more a work of art than a household appliance – is aimed at an inquisitive audience sensitive to the latest developments in contemporary art, fashion and design. à www.elica.com à www.pescecappa.com à www.venetacucine.it issue 12 | January February 2011 | ambientecucinaproject | 29 news VALCUCINE SELECTED FOR THE 2010 ADI DESIGN INDEX VALCUCINE has been selected by ADI’s permanent design watchdog for the 2010 ADI Design Index, in the “Business Research” section. This section brings together project developments and other initiatives which through design promote research and innovation in business and in the local area. The nod is an important acknowledgment of the commitment Valcucine has show to environmental issues over the last thirty years through innovative, functional products where eco-sustainability is always a central issue. Valcucine works by applying a system that strikes a balance between exploiting and regenerating environmental resources, saving raw materials by using a design based on de-materialisation and on the recyclability and re-use at the end of the product’s life. Hence the on-going effort to make “smart” design choices and use innovative technologies resulting in products which reduce to a minimum the amount of material and energy used in the manufacturing cycle. à www.valcucine.it SCAVOLINI IN NEW YORK With the inauguration of the Scavolini Soho Gallery, the Italian firm was one of the prominent names at iSaloni Milano in New York last November, and for the occasion it hosted the first stage in and the inauguration of Italian Design Street Walking, a showroom promenade that offered an opportunity to find out more about the brands taking part in the event. Scavolini Soho Gallery is Scavolini USA’s first flagship store: a 900 square-metre space on two levels. The address - 429 West Broadway - has great cachet, being well-known to New Yorkers as the home of the Nancy Hoffman Gallery, one of the most famous art galleries in the city. And to make the most of the location’s glorious past, the refurbishment project was placed in the hands of the SpaCe Architects studio, which has kept to the original architecture and style of the space: a large, dramatic loft that is the ideal backdrop for 14 kitchens which show off the great opportunities for composition 30 | ambientecucinaproject | January February 2011 | issue 12 and personalisation Scavolini offers: from Crystal Texture by Karim Rashid to Scenery by King&Miranda Design and Flux by Giugiaro Design, all different in their design and taste but all offering 100% Italian style.
