uring this chaotic time of year when we come off a
season jammed with quick weekend getaways and are
heading into a more structured Fall with new schedules
and commitments, we like to reflect back on the peace and
solitude of The Great Cairn Hut, a wise old owl of a place with
a front row seat on to the most beautiful mountain range we
know. This is a place where you can truly let go, live simply,
and get lost in your own thoughts and daydreams as you trek
through the snow.
Access to the Great Cairn Hut is either very expensive or very
difficult but it is worth all of the work and every last penny.
You can arrive via one of several long overland routes involving
extensive glacier travel or by helicopter from Golden, B.C.
The hut is located on a red bedrock bench, 4 km NNW of Mt.
Sir Sanford in the heart of the Northern Selkirk Mountains of
B.C. and it serves as an excellent base for mountaineering in
the summer as well as ski touring in the winter months. Classic
routes and descents are at the hut’s footsteps with access to the
Adamants, Gothics and Sir Sanford.
The Great Cairn Hut sleeps a perfect team of six and with a week
to explore it is natural to spend very early mornings out on the
snow that bleed into long, full days. It is a relief to return to the
warmth of the Great Cairn Hut for a simple home cooked meal
over a wood burning store, with good friends, a stiff drink or two
and a lot of stories and laughter.
