The English Standard Version® (ESV®) stands in
the classic mainstream of English Bible translations over the past half-millennium. The fountainhead of that stream was William Tyndale’s New
Testament of 1526; marking its course were the
King James Version of 1611 (KJV), the English
Revised Version of 1885 (RV), the American
Standard Version of 1901 (ASV), and the Revised
Standard Version of 1952 and 1971 (RSV). In that
stream, faithfulness to the text and vigorous
pursuit of accuracy were combined with simplicity, beauty, and dignity of expression. Our goal
has been to carry forward this legacy for a new
century.

The “ESV”; and “English Standard
Version” are trademarks of Good News
Publishers. Use of either trademark
requires the permission of Good News
Publishers.
To this end each word and phrase in the ESV®
has been carefully weighed against the original
Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, to ensure the fullest
accuracy and clarity and to avoid under-translating or overlooking any nuance of the original
text. The words and phrases themselves grow
out of the Tyndale-King James legacy, and most
recently out of the RSV, with the 1971 RSV text
providing the starting point for our work. Archaic
language has been brought to current usage and
significant corrections have been made in the
translation of key texts. But throughout, our goal
has been to retain the depth of meaning and enduring language that have made their indelible
mark on the English-speaking world and have
defined the life and doctrine of the church over
the last four centuries.
The ESV® is an “essentially literal” translation that
seeks as far as possible to capture the precise
wording of the original text and the personal
style of each Bible writer. It seeks to be transparent to the original text, letting the reader see as
directly as possible the structure and meaning of
the original.

Its principal translator was Casiodoro de Reina, an
independent Lutheran theologian, but a manuscript
found at the Bodleian Library gives further evidence
of the fact that the Spanish Bible was a community
project. This translation was based on the Hebrew
Masoretic Text (Bomberg’s Edition, 1525) and the
Greek Textus Receptus (Stephanus’ Edition, 1550).
As secondary sources Reina was aided by the
Ferrara Bible for the Old Testament and the Latin
Edition of Santes Pagnino throughout. For the New
Testament he had great aid from the translations of
Francisco de Enzinas and Juan Pérez de Pineda. The
1569 version included the deuterocanonical books
in the Old Testament.
This Bible, as central to the perception of the
scriptures by Protestants in Spanish as the King
James Version in English, has undergone numerous
revisions, the first of which took place in 1602 under
the editorial eye of Cipriano de Valera. This edition
was printed in Amsterdam. The 1602 revision moved
the deuterocanonical books to a section between
the Old and New Testaments called the Apocrypha.
Next was the revision of 1862, followed by other
important revisions in 1909, 1960 and 1995. Modern
editions often omit the Apocrypha. The 1909 edition
is essentially the equivalent of the English King
James Version, while the 1960 edition is the equivalent of the English Revised Standard Version. Both
versions are therefore still in print.
Since the 1960 revision was released, there has
been much debate among conservative Christian
groups which use the Reina-Valera Bible. However, the 1960 revision became the common Bible
of many millions of Spanish-speaking Christians
around the world, surpassing the 1909 in its reception. Almost all Hispanic liberal and pentecostal
churches use it, despite further attempts to revise it.

Reina-Valera 1960 is a Spanish translation
of the Bible, first published in 1569 in Basel,
Switzerland and nicknamed the “Biblia del
Oso” (in English: Bible of the Bear). It was not
the first complete Bible in Spanish; several
others, most notably the Alfonsina Bible,
were published in previous centuries.

BOOK DESCRIPTION
SYNOPSIS
Unger’s Commentary on the Gospels
is a brand new, never-published
edition of the observations and
teachings of Dr. Merrill Unger on the
New Testament Gospels.
Included in this volume is a book
introduction for each of the four
gospels and a thorough verse-by-verse
commentary on this New Testament
group of books.
The constant thought on Unger’s
mind was teaching and explaining the
Scriptures. Former Dallas Theological
Seminary president John F. Walvoord,
in his own biography, writes about Dr.
Unger:
The Unger’s Commentary on the
Gospels is a compilation of the studies
of Merrill Unger. This commentary will
help readers better understand, study
and appreciate the New Testament
which is the Word of God.

He was an incessant writer and was
extremely capable as a wordsmith. When
traveling on a cross-country automobile trip,
he often wrote in a notepad on his lap while
his wife drove. The story is also told that when
he stood in line waiting to get a ticket at the
airline counter, he jotted down ideas for a
new book (Blessed Hope, AMG Publishers).
Just as he did in the classroom for
over twenty years, Dr. Unger pours his
heart and soul into teaching the Word.
As one student said, he had a way of
“being absorbed in the verses but then
lifting the students into the heavens as
to what the Lord was telling us in the
words of the text.” Inside these pages
is a collection of the observations and
teachings of one of the finest Bible
scholars of the twentieth century.
Merrill Frederick Unger (19091980) received his BA from John
Hopkins University, a Th.M. and Th.D.
from Dallas Theological Seminary,
and then returned to John Hopkins
to earn his Ph.D. in Hebrew and Semitic languages.
Dr. Unger served as professor of
Semitics and Old Testament at Dallas
Theological Seminary from 1948 to
1967. He is best remembered for his
many reference works: Archaeology
and the Old Testament, Introductory
Guide to the Old Testament, Unger’s
Bible Dictionary, and Unger’s Bible
Handbook.

SERIES SYNOPSIS
Christmas Chai with Malachi is part of
the “Coffee Cup Bible Studies,” a series
of Bible studies for women in compact,
workbook format the examine the “life
and times” of certain Bible characters
and the books of the Bible that pertain
to them. Each study is to be read over
a four-to-eight-week period, and study
sections are broken down into short,
daily segments to fit readers’ busy
lifestyles.
“Bah humbug!” With these immortal
words, Ebenezer Scrooge dismisses the
Christmas ideals of restorative justice
and charity. But in nighttime apparitions
Scrooge must look face to face at the
rotten fruit of his miserliness. But what if
Scrooge is us?
Christmas Chai with Malachi brings
readers face-to-face with a sovereign
God of past, present, and future, who
keeps His promises to discipline and
bless His people so that He will be
known among the nations. Through
penetrating use of rhetorical questions,
“Lord Sabaoth” reveals the justice and
mercy required for His people to spread
His renown in all the earth. And with
that revelation comes a promise that
the sun of righteousness will arise with
healing in its wings.
Designed for group or individual
study, Christmas Chai with Malachi
guides readers through an encounter
with “the Lord who rules over all” in the
weeks leading up to Christmas, helping
them “keep the main thing the main

BOOK DESCRIPTION
Would you be delighted if, upon pulling into
the parking lot of your place of
employment each day, you knew you
would walk inside and work shoulder to
shoulder with Jesus Christ? Or, would it be
overwhelmingly intimidating to be working
for someone who knew your every thought,
your every move, your every ambition?
Such is the situation in Jesus in the 9 to 5,
wherein famed motivational speaker
and author Dr. Dennis E. Hensley actually
allows you to step into a 21st century
company being run on a day to day basis
by none other than Jesus Christ, himself.
You’ll be there as Jesus hires new personnel,
establishes company training, and sets
a quality control system in place. You’ll
observe as Jesus is asked to judge a matter
of employee theft, is defied by his employees
about business management practices, and
is forced to make plans to hand over his
business because of his pending departure.
Along with the scenario of Jesus running a
company, this book also provides insightful
chapters on life management skills, as drawn
from the teachings and actions of Jesus.
You’ll be shown how to improve your time
management practices, your communication
abilities, your goal setting and long range
planning skills, and even your sales and
outreach talents.
With wit, wisdom, and continuous
momentum, this book reveals specific ways
in which you can enrich your life, expand
your personal and business horizons, and
add new vitality in reaching your goals and
aims in life. It’s also just a lot of fun to
observe Jesus in action as the director of a
contemporary business operation. So, clock
in. Your first day on the job with Jesus is set
to get started.

SYNOPSIS
Adrian and Marcelle continue their
quest to free the human slaves on
the dragon planet of Starlight. While
sword maiden Marcelle returns to
their home planet in search of military
aid, Adrian stays on Starlight to find
his brother Frederick, hoping to join
forces and liberate the slaves through
stealth. Both learn that reliance on
brute force or ingenuity will not be
enough to bring complete freedom to
those held in chains.
BOOK DESCRIPTION
Exodus Rising is the third book
in the Tales of Starlight series.
Filled with excitement,
twists and turns, and thoughtprovoking dilemmas, Exodus
Rising will keep readers turning
the pages.
SPIRITUAL THEMES
The overarching theme of the entire
series is sacrifice for the benefit of
those weaker than oneself. Under that
major theme are the sub-themes of
love, faith, courage, and trust as the
two heroes are forced to trust each
other from afar and rely on each other’s
love and faithfulness. Their willingness
to suffer and sacrifice in order to free
captive slaves parallels the sacrifice of
Christ and His torturous journey to the
cross.

Bryan Davis is the author of the following young
adult fantasy series: Dragons in our Midst, Oracles of
Fire, Echoes from the Edge, and Dragons of Starlight. He also wrote I Know Why the Angels Dance,

a dream to become an author. He began by writing
a story to motivate his seven children to gain some
excitement about writing, and that story grew into a

craft and enduring more than two hundred rejections
from publishers and agents, he broke through with
his best-selling series Dragons in our Midst® (Living

SYNOPSIS & DESCRIPTION
The empire of Eirmon Omiir, king of BarraDohn, couldn’t be stronger. He rules all
Aralyn with an iron hand. Meridium, the
metal alloy that is both the source and
currency of power throughout the world
was discovered in Barra-Dohn and BarraDohn remains dominant because of it.
The family of Eirmon Omiir couldn’t
be more fractured. Eirmon cares for
little beyond the power of his throne
and his own personal pleasure, and the
sins of the father have had generational
consequences. Eirmon’s son, Kaden, has
reaped their bitter harvest. His marriage is
in shambles, a deep divide separating him
from both his wife and his son.
A series of mysterious visitors begin
to converge on Barra-Dohn, each with
their own secrets and motives. There is
the elderly Devoted, with his impossible
prophesy that the mighty Barra-Dohn will
fall within 40 days, the pair of Amhuru,
legendary wanderers, who have come to
take back what was stolen, and the Jin
Dara, who brings an army and an ancient
thirst for vengeance.
The events that follow and the crisis
that emerges offer both Eirmon and
Kaden a chance at restoration, to rise
above their past failures, even as the
world around them falls apart. Kaden
seizes this chance, a small mercy in the
midst of a greater judgement. Eirmon
does not, and his fate is sealed. And so is
the fate of the world, for the end of BarraDohn is the beginning of The Wandering,
and everything hangs in the balance.

For a world that has elevated created
things above its creator and forgotten
where it came from, a price must be paid.
The empire of Barra-Dohn is the first to pay
that price, and as a remnant flees the fall of
that empire, the mysterious Jin Dara seeks
unimaginable power by gathering all the
fragments of the Golden Cord together. The
exiles from Barra-Dohn and the Amhuru,
a tribe of nomadic warriors who protect
those fragments must try to stop him.
There is nowhere to run and there are no
safe places; The Wandering has begun.

SPIRITUAL THEMES
The first task of all fiction is to tell a good
story, which The Darker Road does, but
within that story lie several important
messages. The most obvious is that
our choices have consequences, as the
sins of the city of Barra-Dohn lead to
its downfall, and as the main character,
Kaden Omiir, must face the fact that his
choices have alienated him from his wife
and son. The second is that mercy in the
midst of judgement is possible, as Kaden
has the chance to begin to repair what
he’s broken, even as his world crumbles
around him. Finally, the fundamental
premise that underlies not only The
Darker Road but all of The Wandering,
is that if a world turns away from its
creator, caring only about created things,
there might be a price to pay. A terrible
price.

SYNOPSIS
King James Bible is used as the
name for the 1611 translation in
Charles Butler’s Horae Biblicae (first
published 1797). Other works from
the early 19th century confirm the
widespread use of this name on both
sides of the Atlantic: it is found both
in a “Historical sketch of the English
translations of the Bible” published
in Massachusetts in 1815, and in an
English publication from 1818, which
explicitly states that the 1611 version
is “generally known by the name
of King James’s Bible”. This name
was also found as King James’ Bible
(without the final “s”): for example in
a book review from 1811. The phrase
“King James’s Bible” is used as far back
as 1715, although in this case it is not
clear whether this is a name or merely
a description.
The use of Authorized Version or
Authorised Version, capitalized and
used as a name, is found as early as
1814. In Britain, the 1611 translation
is generally known as the “Authorized
Version” today.
As early as 1814, we find King
James’ version, evidently a descriptive
phrase, being used. In the United
States, the “1611 translation” (actually
the standard text of 1769) is generally
known as the King James Version or
King James Bible today.
