Sensory-rich exhibits, hands-on educational programs and information, and entertaining special events bring the Air Force story to life. Nine presidential aircraft are located in the Presidential Gallery. The Museum complex includes three attached main museum buildings, which contain a newly renovated giant screen digital 3-D theater, restaurant, gift shop and aviation bookstore, as well as the major exhibits. Located a mile from the main museum are the Presidential Aircraft and Research and Development/Flight Test Hangers. A Memorial Park adjacent to the parking lot contains various memorials honoring individuals and organizations associated with the United States Air Force. The National Aviation Hall of Fame is located inside the National Museum of the United States Air Force. (937) 255-0944 • nationalaviation.org Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park The human imagination found its highest expression in three men from Dayton, Ohio: Wilbur and Orville Wright, first to fly a powered, heavier-than-air machine and creators of the practical airplane, and Paul Laurence Dunbar, who with his compelling new voice was the first African American writer to win high distinction in American literature. Dayton Aviation Heritage commemorates the lives and legacies of these three exceptional men and the history of aviation. The park is a cooperative effort between the National Park Service and four partners. nps.gov/archive/daav/home.htm Huffman Prairie Flying Field (FREE) Huffman Prairie Flying Field, a national historic landmark, is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Greene County. This 84-acre pasture is where Wilbur and Orville Wright undertook the difficult and dangerous task of creating a dependable, fully controllable airplane and training themselves to be pilots. The field looks just as it did when the Wright brothers flew here in 1904. (937) 425-0008, Enter through Gate 16A, WPAFB, Ohio 45433 Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center (FREE) The Huffman Prairie Interpretive Center exhibits focus on the Wright brothers’ experimental flights at Huffman Prairie Flying Field in 1904 and 1905, and on The Wright Company’s flying school from 1910 to 1916. The Interpretive Center also covers the history of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base from its beginnings at McCook Field in Dayton during World War I, up to its contributions to the aerospace projects of the future now being carried out at its current complex, which includes the Huffman Prairie Field where Wilbur and Orville Wright turned their invention into a practical machine. (937) 425-0008, 2380 Memorial Road, WPAFB (Off Route 444) Wright Brothers Memorial The Memorial is located at the top of Wright Brothers Hill, overlooking the Huffman Prairie Flying Field. A plaque on the low stone wall surrounding the plaza around the Memorial lists the names of the 119 pilots trained at Huffman Prairie. The Memorial was erected by the citizens of Dayton to honor Wilbur and Orville Wright for their original aereonautical research. The Archives contains the most complete collection of Wright brothers items, including about 4,000 photographs that document the invention of the airplane or pertain to the Wright family. The Archives also includes many other aviation collections, all of which are available to researchers with advance notification. Being a university gallery, we are able to utilize diverse intellectual and physical resources to provide quality arts education and cultural experiences to not only the Wright State University community, but to citizens of the Dayton metropolitan area and southwest Ohio. Clay Street at S.R. 343, Clifton (937) 767-2343 • villageofclifton.com National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center The Museum opened to the public in 1988 with enthusiastic support of hundreds of individuals throughout the nation who have donated family treasures to the center. In less than two years, the museum had developed one of the nation’s largest collections of Afro-American materials, including over 9,000 artifacts, 350 manuscript collections, and thousands of photographs. Staff continues to collect artifacts from people throughout the nation who are anxious to have their family history preserved in the first national museum dedicated to Afro-American history and culture. The National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center (NAAMCC) opened a new art exhibit, “How I Got Over,” which showcases how African Americans have used art to mobilize communities. The exhibit title comes from the song sung by gospel singer and civil rights activist Mahalia Jackson after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Built in 1802, the mill was originally called the Davis Mill by its founder Owen Davis. Clifton Mill provided cornmeal to federal troops during the American Revolution. The Historic Clifton Mill was built in this location to take advantage of the natural power of the concentrated water funneled from the Little Miami River into the Clifton Gorge. The Satariano family purchased the mill in 1987 and continue to preserve its historical integrity. Entrance to the reserve is through Phillips Park, just east of Orchard Lane off Dayton-Xenia Road. A 1.26 mile loop trail leads hikers through habitats of floodplain woodlands, marsh, wet prairies, woodland pools, scrub shrub wetlands, and along Beaver Creek. The reserve is a bird watchers paradise, and a great place for nature study and photography. Here you’ll enjoy a pleasant stroll along a boardwalk path through a marsh of cattails, rushes and thimble weed. Crossing a bridge over Old Town Creek, you’ll enter a forest area of walnut, oak and hickory. A lovely sanctuary for bird-watching, nature photography or just a peaceful hike through a wetland ecosystem any time of year. (937) 562-6440 • gcparkstrails.com/parks-SaraArnovitz.html Oakes Quarry Park This 190-acre Oakes Quarry Park, formerly a rock quarry, features worldclass fossil beds, an old-growth forest, a native-grass prairie, and miles of hiking and horseback riding trails combined with some of the most stunning vistas in Greene County. One of the world’s largest and most diverse collections of marine organism fossils from more than 425-million years ago can be found here. This is one of the only three locations in Ohio where glacial grooves, slides and polishing are preserved. On SR 235 1/4 mile east of I-675. Features include three 550 year old oak trees known as “The Three Sisters”, a planted tall grass prairie, an osage orange “tunnel”, woodlands and scenic Sugar Creek. 5 miles of wooded trails. 1/4 mile paved path. 10 miles of bridale trails (no horse rental). Group camping is available. 4178 Conference Road, Bellbrook, (937) 275-PARK • metroparks.org/Parks/Sugarcreek/Home.aspx 13 GET OUTDOORS CANOEING Jacoby Road Canoe Launch Indian Mound Reserve One of our most popular parks, Indian Mound Reserve’s 169 acres offer one of the most diverse areas managed by the Greene County Parks & Trails. A spectacular natural resource is created with a blend of Cedar Cliff Falls, the Massie Creek Gorge, meadow, woods, river and marsh, creating an amazing view in any season of the year. Native American history can be learned here with the Pollock Works, a Hopewell structure, and the Williamson Mound, an Adena structure, both of which are hundreds of years old. The 23-acre park is situated just a few miles east of U.S. Route 68, north of Xenia, south of Yellow Springs and west of Clifton. Primary access is from the south (Clifton Road to northwest on Jacoby Road). Ample parking and easy access to the river make Jacoby Road a popular launch site for canoeists. Excellent fishing and hiking, and you can reserve a primitive campsite. The Narrows Reserve lies alongside the National and State Scenic Little Miami River near the intersection of Indian Ripple Road and Factory Road in Beavercreek Township, just a few miles south of U.S. Route 35. The Narrows Reserve Nature Center is located at 2575 Indian Ripple Road, just west of the main Narrows Reserve entrance in Beavercreek. Please plan a visit to view the native plant and animal exhibits, tour the raptor aviary and the Greene County Beekeepers’ Association Apiary. The Greene Trails railsto-trails system reaches out in four directions on over 140 miles of paved trails. Over 600 miles of county and township roads wait to be explored, including a half-century ride that visits all five of Greene County’s covered bridges. John Bryan State Park and MoMBA both offer off-road cycling trials. Rails-to-Trails Bike Paths There are over 140 miles of paved, well-maintained bike paths for you to enjoy here with trailside lodging, restaurants, parking and services readily available. From Xenia, trails extend in every direction along retired railroad corridors. Ride through wetlands, prairies and woodlands. Xenia Station o Phot an by D son r Patte Xenia Station is located in Xenia on Miami Avenue between South Detroit Street (US 68) and Cincinnati Avenue (US 42) about three blocks south of the Greene County courthouse. Look for the B&O caboose. Restrooms are located in the replica of the original telegraph office. There is ample parking. Beavercreek Bike Hub Located on North Fairfield Road, between US 35 and Dayton-Xenia Road on the Creekside Trail. Parking. Restrooms. Vending Machines. Yellow Springs Station Yellow Springs Station is a replica of the original train station and is the welcome center for the community with public restrooms. Located at the intersection of Dayton Street and Xenia Avenue There is ample public parking in the area. 16 COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES greenecountyohio.org Road Riding Over 600 miles of county and township roads in Greene County beckon you to discover a serene rural landscape. Pedal through alternating bands of sun and shadow alongside the Little Miami River or race ten arrow-straight miles to the heart of farm-rich Ross Township. Ride a half-century that visits five covered bridges. Off-Road Cycling John Bryan State Park Greene County can accommodate those who prefer cycling without pavement as well. John Bryan State Park offers 11.5 miles of trails with log jumps and creek crossings. More trails are available at nearby Caesar Creek State Park. MoMBA Mountain Biking Area The MoMBA network consists of 8.3 miles of trails designed specifically for mountain biking. For safety reasons, recreational hiking, walking and running are prohibited on mountain bike trails. After Yellow Springs the trail passes mostly farm fields and is less shaded. The paved shared-use trail ends at the I-70 overpass north of Beatty. By following city streets and some segments of bike paths, it is possible to ride 3.9 miles to Veterans’ Park in downtown Springfield. From there it is 5.76 miles on the Buck Creek Trail to Buck Creek State Park and 16.6 miles on the Simon Kenton Trail to the Urbana YMCA in Champaign County. Staging areas with parking & restrooms. Yellow Springs: Parking available off US 68 near Yellow Springs Station and at Ellis Park on Polecat Road. Beatty: On Yellow Springs Street off US 68 on southwest edge of Springfield. Springfield: At Veterans’ Park at SR 72 (Limestone Street) and Warder Street north of downtown Springfield. Urbana: At the YMCA on SR 36 east of downtown Urbana. Little Miami Scenic Trail (Xenia to Newtown) It is 56.4 miles from Xenia Station south to Newtown. The name of the trail is derived from the fact that it follows the Little Miami River Valley. Also known as the Bullskin Trace, the Little Miami River Valley has served as a corridor of travel for over ten thousand years. Parts of the valley predate the Wisconsin Glacier, which set the current drainage system, having been part of the now extinct Teays River System that flowed north to Fort Wayne, Indiana. This section is very shaded with an abundance of natural serenity. Staging areas with parking & restrooms. Spring Valley: On Main Street off SR 725 on south edge of Spring Valley. This is a straight trail that follows the old railroad. Staging areas with parking & restrooms. Jamestown: Frank Seaman Park on Cottonville Road off of Waynesville/Jamestown Road off of old US 35. Creekside Trail (Xenia to Dayton) It is 15.21 miles from Xenia Station to Eastwood MetroPark in Montgomery County. Referred to in the past as the H-connector, this trail derives its current name from the fact that it follows Shawnee Creek out of Xenia and the Little and Big Beaver Creeks through Beavercreek. The trail passes through wooded areas, farm fields, and wetlands and is known for the multitude of wildflowers. It is possible to ride through Eastwood MetroPark to connect to the Mad River Bikeway and the Great Miami River Corridor Bikeway. Staging areas with parking & restrooms. Xenia: James Ranch and Fairground Recreation Center on Fairground Road next to Fairgrounds. Beavercreek Station: North Fairfield Road off US 35. Beavercreek Community Park on Factory Road Ohio to Erie Trail (Xenia to London) It is 28.67 miles from Xenia Station to the Madison County Senior Center on the west side of London. It is possible to follow bike route signs one mile to an additional 6.5 miles of trail. This is a straight trail that parallels US 42 as it passes through a beautiful rural landscape and is well known for the variety and proliferation of wild flowers and birds. Very little of this trail is shaded. When complete, the Ohio to Erie Trail will connect the Ohio River at Cincinnati to Lake Erie at Cleveland and be over 400 miles in length. Staging areas with parking & restrooms. Cedarville: On SR 72. South Charleston: From US 42 go south on SR 41 to West Mound Road (It is Mound Street to the east and Mound Road to the west.) Turn right. Station is immediately past High Street London: Parking is available in London at Shelter #1 behind the Madison County Senior Center at 280 W. High Street (US 42) just west of Midway Street (SR 38). Wright Brothers Bikeway (Fairborn) It is 4.3 miles from the YMCA on Central Avenue to the Wright Brothers Memorial Park. This urban trail links downtown Fairborn with the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park and Wright State University. Park and Ride Locations. You can park at the retail plaza at Kauffman Avenue and West Garland Drive.
