Wayne’s Story
Since the inception of the Veteran Initiative through National AMBUCS, Greenebucs has
embraced it by giving close to 50 Veteran bikes to local veterans. This was done by collaborating with either the Dayton VA or the Volunteers of America which is an organization
serving homeless veterans.
Pat Buckholt and Devlynn Tanner attended two Stand Down Events in Dayton last year.
These events provide opportunities for area
homeless veterans such as job fairs, haircuts, food,
and other resources. One of these veterans was
Wayne.
Wayne is an Army veteran who was disabled
through two non-war related accidents required
multiple joint replacements. Leaving the Army because of his disabilities he found himself divorced,
battling homelessness, alcoholism and he was significantly overweight. After several years he pulled his life together, enrolled in college
and has maintained sobriety. Because of these problems Wayne never dreamt he would
have a chance to own a tryke, but with little hope he applied anyhow.
With the challenge of finding a bike that would support Wayne and address his disabilities,
Sean Reeder of Faast Cycles was contacted. Sean researched and found a recumbent bike
that would work for Wayne. Because of the nature of his disabilities he requested an
electric motor to augment his hips and knees as they falter. The bike was ordered and built.
Wayne stopped by, tried it out and took it home.
“I just want to say thank you to everyone
and to this organization that has made
this possible for me. I can not only get
out and have more quality time with my
family, but this particular three wheeled
bike even gives me a lot more mobility at
places I couldn’t go before, like flea
markets and bike trails”.
