We believe that relationships are foundational to the health and well-being of individuals, all forms of the family, and communities. We know that family therapy is effective and that family therapy works. We also believe that consumers should have access to mental health care, including the services of marriage and family therapists. The AAMFT is the primary advocate for the profession and the primary force for advancing the practice of family therapy. Our staff and leaders meet regularly with legislators and principals of health care organizations to persuade them that family therapy is effective and that family therapists should be accepted throughout the health care system. The AAMFT works to ensure that family therapists are accepted as mental health care providers. We assist the profession by: providing continuing education and career development to family therapists, mental health and allied professionals; training future family therapy practitioners, educators, and researchers; promoting research that advances family therapy practice, and offering excellent benefits and services to our members. BUILDING A PROFESSION n the beginning of the twentieth century, families faced new challenges. With the emergence of industrialization, urbanization, and increased life expectancy, traditional family and gender roles changed, and families faced new societal pressures. The public found that they needed professionals who could help them cope with these changes and restore their families’ strength. Marital therapy and later family therapy were born out of this public demand. Powerful new treatment methods based on family systems theories strengthened families and restored hope. The latter part of the twentieth century brought many alterations to the term “family,” and the dawn of the twenty-first century has seen even more changes to the traditional family landscape. As even more shifts in society emerge, families are transforming far beyond traditional definitions. Today’s families face many tough challenges, and now, more than ever, society needs the skills of marriage and family therapists. For 70 years the AAMFT has helped to build the practice of marriage and family therapy into a recognized and legitimate profession. The AAMFT continues to promote and advance the common professional interests of all marriage and family therapists (MFTs) and strives to achieve parity, professional excellence, and public recognition for MFTs. Today, marriage and family therapy is one of the five core mental health disciplines as defined in federal law and by the Health Resources and Services Act (HRSA), with more than 50,000 licensed marriage and family therapists in the United States, and the profession continues to grow. MEMBERS SPEAK: “I just have to tell you that your literature, publications, and general information are the VERY BEST of any organization of which I have been a member. I am so glad you exist, because you are the only organization that doesn’t bore me. Your information is TOP NOTCH.” — Lita Perna 3 112 SOUTH ALFRED STREET, ALEXANDRIA, VA 22314 | PHONE: +1(703)838-9808 | FAX: +1(703)838-9805 | EMAIL: [email protected] | WEBSITE: WWW.AAMFT.ORG AAMFT MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES AMFT membership demonstrates your ongoing commitment to abide by the AAMFT Code of Ethics, the highest ethical standard in the profession. Minority Fellowship Program The AAMFT Minority Fellowship Program’s objective is to expand the delivery of culturally competent mental health and substance abuse services to underserved minority populations and to increase the number of doctoral level, culturally competent, ethnic minority Marriage and Family therapists. Our goal is to do this by providing financial support and professional guidance to ethnic minority graduate students pursuing doctoral degrees in Marriage and Family therapy. Funded by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), AAMFT has created the Minority Fellowship Program to support the training of practitioners or practitioner/researchers in culturally competent mental health and substance abuse services, treatment, and prevention. This fellowship program is directed at Marriage and Family Therapy doctoral students who are committed to research about and service to ethnic minority and underserved populations. An MFP fellowship is more than a simple scholarship that only provides financial support. An MFP fellowship is a professional training appointment into a community of other students and professionals who hold similar professional interests. Indeed, the MFP provides stipends or living allowances to students who hold the fellowships. However, we also facilitate leadership development and provide professional guidance with the aim of deepening the skills sets and knowledge base of the fellows in areas related to minority mental health research and services. To receive more information about the Minority Fellowship Program or to view the requirements for application please visit www.aamft.org. 112 SOUTH ALFRED STREET, ALEXANDRIA, VA 22314 | PHONE: +1(703)838-9808 | FAX: +1(703)838-9805 | EMAIL: [email protected] | WEBSITE: WWW.AAMFT.ORG Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) AMFT’s Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) is a specialized accrediting body that accredits master’s degree, doctoral degree, and post-graduate degree clinical training programs in marriage and family therapy throughout the United States and Canada. The COAMFTE is made up of nine (9) Commissioners — seven (7) professional members and two (2) public members. Professional Commission members must be senior marriage and family therapy educators or clinicians. Public members represent the interests of the general public and are not professional marriage and family therapy educators, supervisors, or practitioners. Since 1978, the COAMFTE has been recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) as the national accrediting body for the field of marriage and family therapy. In addition, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) officially recognizes the COAMFTE. CHEA is a non-governmental organization that works to foster and facilitate the role of accrediting bodies in promoting and insuring the quality and diversity of American post-secondary education. The USDE and CHEA regularly review the policies and practices of the COAMFTE for continued recognition. The COAMFTE accreditation standards often serve as the foundation for the development of individual credentialing and state licensure requirements. The accreditation process is a voluntary process that requires self-study by the program, an on-site review by a selected group of peers, and a review and decision by the COAMFTE to determine compliance with accreditation standards. Once a program has become accredited, it is required to submit annual reports demonstrating continued compliance with standards. Accreditation cycles vary for initial accreditation and re-accreditation and programs are required to apply for renewal of accreditation. For more information about COAMFTE and COAMFTE accreditation standards, please visit our website at www.aamft.org/COAMFTE or contact us directly at [email protected]. Net proceeds from the sale of these DVDs go directly to the AAMFT Research and Education Foundation minority fellowship fund. A Daughter Who Needs a Mother DVD This session, recorded in 1991 by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and digitally remastered in 2009, features Harry Aponte conducting a live, unedited therapy session with a family. The featured family is an African American mother and her children struggling with poverty and a legacy of deprivation. The session demonstrates the Eco-System Model, incorporating class, racial, and ethnic experiences of both the family and therapist. Mother lacks confidence and skill to parent her children, forcing her 14-year-old daughter to do so. After running away from home to pursue the attention of older men, her actions culminate in a suicide gesture. An experience is created for the mother to reach out to her daughter. Item # V030 AAMFT Members: $99 • Non-Members: $129 Escape From Bickering DVD This session, recorded in 1989 by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and digitally re-mastered in 2007, features Michael White conducting a live, unedited therapy session with a family. The featured family includes an 18-year-old who was institutionalized for fire-setting. Through circular strategic and reflexive questions and techniques of externalizing and mapping the influence of problems, the family is helped to discover new information about themselves. Concentration is on the bickering between siblings and the theme of protest that bonds the family to systems that patholize them. A reflecting team is used to consolidate the family’s “new story” which emerges in the session. Item # V008 AAMFT Members: $99 • Non-Members: $129 17 I Would Like to Call You Mother DVD This session, recorded in 1988 by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and digitally remastered in 2009, features Ivan Boszmormenyi-Nagy conducting a live, unedited therapy session with a family. The featured family includes four generations consisting of a delinquent adolescent, his chronically psychotic mother, grandparents, and great-grand mother. Instead of reframes, paradoxical injunctions, or restructuring, Nagy’s model employs multidirected partiality, which includes discussing and acknowledging everyone’s positive contributions to counter their mistrust, blaming, and self-defeating invisible loyalties. Item # V016 AAMFT Members: $99 • Non-Members: $129 The Lost Boy DVD This session, recorded in 1984 by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and digitally re-mastered in 2007, features Virginia Satir conducting a live, unedited therapy session with a family. The featured family is a large intact family with ten children whose presenting problem is the grief following the loss of one of their children who is missing a year after his abduction. During this experiential session, the family is emotionally and physically engaged through use of stairs, touch, and positioning to reflect the mourning, intersibling rivalry and distances of the father. This DVD offers an excellent demonstration of Satir’s open, directive, and special style. Item # V003 AAMFT Members: $99 • Non-Members: $129 Usefulness of Non-Presenting Symptoms DVD This session, recorded in 1986 by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and digitally remastered in 2009, features Carl Whitaker conducting a live, unedited therapy session with a family. The featured family includes a grandmother, mother, and two preadolescent sons. The women are recent widows, and the boys were abused by their deceased alcoholic father. Through pushing and then drawing the family in, intergenerational rules that hypnotize people to act in destructive ways are searched out. Themes of suicidal behavior, depression, unresolved grief and obesity become apparent as the family is challenged to deal with issues in a healthier fashion. Item # V005 AAMFT Members: $99 • Non-Members: $129 112 SOUTH ALFRED STREET, ALEXANDRIA, VA 22314 | PHONE: +1(703)838-9808 | FAX: +1(703)838-9805 | EMAIL: [email protected] | WEBSITE: WWW.AAMFT.ORG Unfolding the Laundry DVD This live therapy session, recorded in 1984 by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and digitally re-mastered in 2007, features Salvador Minuchin conducting a live therapy session with a family. The featured family is a large, blended, recently married couple with dual-careers and five stepchildren. The identified patient is the youngest son (age 11) who is acting out. After defocusing attention on the identified patient and re-labeling much of the sibling behavior, attention is focused on the couple. The use of simplicity and humor to lure the family into desiring the necessary change and following the family’s lead in defining the problem illustrates Minuchin’s expert ability at not being an expert.
