2 PRINCETON DAILY CLARION THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2014 BUSINESS B&B, boutique niche on North Main ANDREA HOWE [email protected] PRINCETON—Sisters Jennifer Harrington and MaryFrances Stransky plan a Valentine’s Day grand opening for Downtown Girls Unique Boutique in the parlor of The Maxam House Bed & Breakfast at 426 North Main in Princeton. Harrington brings the jewelry and accessories boutique niche to Princeton after the success of her Downtown Girls boutique in Flemingsburg, Ky., earned a Kentucky lifestyles magazine’s “must stop” mention and she earned distinction as Flemingsburg’s business person of the year. The new Princeton boutique caters to girls and women. Harrington said the business model focuses on offering affordably priced designer-inspired jewelry and accessories, with an emphasis on fresh inventory. She said her inventory stays so fresh that Kentucky customers often flocked to the shop as soon as they saw delivery trucks, not wanting to miss the newest selections. She also offers monogrammed for items purchased in the store, and plans to introduce heat press “bling” T-shirts as well. She sold her shop in Kentucky when her husband took a position at Gibson General Hospital, but the opportunity to create a new boutique in Princeton was too good to resist when her sister purchased The Maxam House Bed and Breakfast. The new boutique fills the parlor and drawing room of the 1870s-era house, accessible from the front door during business hours, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The rest of The Maxam House is reserved for bed and breakfast guests, who get a 10 percent discount when they shop in the boutique. Stransky and her husband bought the home last fall from Maxam House owner Greg Wright, a decision made during a visit with her sister in Princeton while moving from Nashville, Tenn. to her husband’s new post as a college vice president in Wyoming. It was recipe for a blend of family time and family business, allowing Stransky to be in Princeton with Harrington and their mother. Stransky is a former innkeeper at The Sheldon House Bed and Breakfast in Fort Collins, Colo., and does freelance marketing and book and magazine proofreading. The two sisters, their spouses, their mother and their daughters all spend time working in both businesses. The Stranskys redecorated the guest rooms and plan landscaping work when Daily Clarion/Andrea Howe Jennifer Harrington, left, and her sister, MaryFrances Stransky, right, combine two family-operated businesses in The Maxam House on North Main. Harrington’s Downtown Girls Unique Boutique fills two rooms of The Maxam House with affordably priced jewelry, bags and other accessories. The new business grand opening is Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Daily Clarion/Andrea Howe Two of The Maxam House Bed and Breakfast’s three guest rooms pictured above include the “Paris Room” at left, overlooking North Main Street, and the “Safari Room” above, on the south side of the second floor.
