Defense Sciences Office Antibody Technology Program

Purpose: DARPA is interested in reviewing proposals that describe innovative research towards
developing and demonstrating the ability to simultaneously improve antibody stability and
control antibody affinity. The goal of the Antibody Technology Program is to enable
multiplexed, antibody-based biosensors that have long shelf life and operate in harsh
environments that are relevant to the DoD mission.
DoD Breast Cancer Postdoctoral Fellowship Award
Due Date: 2 December 2009
Purpose: The FY09 Postdoctoral Fellowship Award supports exceptionally talented recent
medical or other doctoral graduates in their pursuit of innovative, high-impact breast cancer
research during their postdoctoral training and allows them to obtain the necessary experience
for an independent career at the forefront of breast cancer research. Candidates for this award
should exhibit a strong desire to pursue a career in breast cancer research. Under this award
mechanism, the postdoctoral trainee is considered the Principal Investigator (PI) and, as such,
should write the project narrative with appropriate direction from the mentor.
High School Apprenticeship Program (HSAP) Grant
Purpose: The Army Research Office intends to conduct a pilot youth science program, the High
School Apprenticeship Program, which will fund the science, technology, engineering, or math
apprenticeship of promising high school juniors and seniors to work in a university structured
research environment under the direction of existing ARO-sponsored principal investigators
serving as mentors.
Multidisciplinary Research Program of the University Research Initiative Grant
Due Date: 2 March 2010
Purpose: To support basic science and/or engineering research at U.S. institutions of higher
education (hereafter referred to as "universities") that is of potential interest to DoD. The
program is focused on multidisciplinary research efforts that intersect more than one traditional

the DoD, “basic research is systematic study directed toward greater knowledge or understanding
of the fundamental aspects of phenomena and of observable facts without specific applications
towards processes or products in mind. It includes all scientific study and experimentation
directed toward increasing fundamental knowledge and understanding in those fields of the
physical, engineering, environmental, and life sciences related to long-term national security
needs. It is farsighted high payoff research that provides the basis for technological progress.”

invests broadly in many specific fields to ensure that it has early cognizance of new scientific
knowledge.
DoD Breast Cancer Era of Hope Scholar Award Grant
Purpose: The Era of Hope Scholar Award supports individuals who have high potential for
innovation in breast cancer research early in their careers. Nominees for this award should be
exceptionally talented, early-career scientists who have demonstrated that they are the “best and
brightest” in their field(s) through extraordinary creativity, vision, and productivity. They also
should exhibit strong potential for leadership in the breast cancer research community and be
able to articulate a vision for the eradication of breast cancer. These individuals should challenge
current dogma and demonstrate an ability to look beyond tradition and convention.

Support of Advanced Coal Research at U.S. Colleges and Universities Grant
Due Date: 24 November 2009
Purpose: The Department of Energy (DOE), National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL)
seeks applications for the UCR Program. Since its inception in FY1979, the primary objective of
the UCR Program has been threefold: (1) to improve our understanding of the chemical and
physical processes involved in the conversion and utilization of coal in an environmentally
acceptable manner; (2) to maintain and upgrade the coal research capabilities and facilities of
U.S. colleges and universities; and (3) to support the education of students in the area of coal
science. To develop and sustain a national program of university research that advances the
previous stated objectives, the DOE is interested in innovative and fundamental research
pertinent to coal conversion and utilization.
Bench-Scale and Slipstream Development and Testing of Post-Combustion Carbon Dioxide
Capture and Separation Technology to Existing Coal-Fired Power Plants Grant
Purpose: To specifically focus on developing technologies for CO2 capture and purification that
can be retrofitted to existing pulverized coal (PC) power plants.

Purpose: To support innovative exploratory/developmental investigations in primary
immunodeficiency diseases focusing on ex vivo studies with human specimens and on studies

Exploratory/Developmental Grant for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Studies
using Cells, Tissues, and Animal Models of Disease (R21)
Due Date: 7 January 2010
Purpose: To encourage research grant applications from institutions/organizations that propose to
carry out basic and/or preclinical research on CAM using cells, cell lines, tissues, cadavers, or
animal model systems with an aim to understand the mechanisms of action of a CAM modality. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant
mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-07-007, that
encourages applications under the R01 mechanism (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pafiles/PA-07-007.html).
Superfund Hazardous Substance Research and Training Program (P42) Grant
Due Date: 15 April 2010
Purpose: The continuation of the Superfund Hazardous Substance Research and Training
Program [referred to as the Superfund Research Program (SRP)]. SRP grants will support
coordinated, multi-project, interdisciplinary research programs to address the mandates legislated
under the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986. These mandates include the
development of: (1) advanced techniques for the detection, assessment, and evaluation of the
effect on human health of hazardous substances; (2) methods to assess the risks to human health
presented by hazardous substances; (3) methods and technologies to detect hazardous substances
in the environment; and (4) basic biological, chemical, and physical methods to reduce the
amount and toxicity of hazardous substances. The objective for the SRP is to develop a holistic
research agenda for the protection of human health. This is accomplished by the establishment of
interdisciplinary programs that link and integrate biomedical research with related nonbiomedical (e.g., engineering, geology, ecology) research within the context of unique scientific
themes developed by the applicant.
Bioengineering Research Grants (BRG) (R01) Grant
Due Date(s): up to 07 January 2013
Purpose: To invite applications for R01 awards to support Bioengineering Research Grants
(BRGs) for basic and applied multi-disciplinary research that addresses important biological,
bioengineering or medical research problems. The BRGs support multi-disciplinary research

performed in a single laboratory or by a small number of investigators that applies an integrative,
systems approach to develop knowledge and/or methods to prevent, detect, diagnose, or treat
disease or to understand health and behavior. A BRG application may propose hypothesisdriven, discovery-driven, developmental, or design-directed research.
Exploratory/Developmental Bioengineering Research Grants (EBRG) [R21] Grant
Purpose: To encourage innovation and high risk/impact bioengineering research in new areas.
While minimal or no preliminary data are expected to be described in the application,
applications should clearly indicate the significance of the proposed work and that the proposed
research and/or development is scientifically sound, that the qualifications of the investigators
are appropriate, and that resources available to the investigators are adequate. An EBRG
application may propose hypothesis-driven, discovery-driven, developmental, or design-directed
research. The research proposed under this program can explore approaches and concepts new to
a particular substantive area; research and development of new technologies, techniques or
methods; or initial research and development of data upon which significant future research may
be built.
Behavioral and Integrative Treatment Development Program (R01) Grant
Purpose: To encourage early career investigators or investigators who are striving to make a shift
in their research to propose discrete, well-defined projects that can be completed within two
years with limited resources. Projects of interest fall within the research domain of behavioral,
combined, sequential, or integrated (behavioral/pharmacological) (1) drug abuse treatment
interventions, including interventions for patients with comorbidities, in diverse settings; (2)
interventions to prevent the acquisition or transmission of HIV infection among individuals in
drug abuse treatment; (3) interventions to promote adherence to drug abuse treatment, HIV and
addiction medications; and (4) interventions to treat chronic pain. Specific examples include: 1)
Stage I pilot or feasibility studies; 2) secondary analysis of existing data; 3) small, self-contained
research projects; 4) development of research assessments or methodology; and 5) development
of new research technology.
Purpose: To advance evidence-based treatment research through 1) the development,
manualization, standardization, early-stage efficacy and/or pilot testing of novel or adapted
treatments and/or interventions (i.e. Stage 1 treatment research, see below), 2) the refinement,
modification, adaptation and/or pilot testing of interventions with demonstrated efficacy for use

in broader scale efficacy or effectiveness trials, or 3) novel treatment research that requires
preliminary testing or development. It is expected that research conducted via this R34
mechanism will primarily consist of Stage I treatment development research that will provide
feasibility, tolerability, and acceptability information and/or pilot data for larger scale Stage II or
Stage III behavioral and integrative treatment studies. This FOA seeks to support research, as
described above, within the domains of behavioral, combined, sequential, or integrated
behavioral and pharmacological (1) drug abuse treatment interventions, including interventions
for patients with comorbidities, in diverse settings; (2) interventions to prevent the acquisition or

National Spatial Data Infrastructure Cooperative Agreements Program Grant
Purpose: To fund innovative projects in the geospatial data community to build the infrastructure
necessary to effectively discover, access, share, manage, and use digital geospatial data. The
NSDI consists of the technologies, policies, organizations, and people necessary to promote costeffective production, ready availability, and greater utilization of geospatial data among a variety
of sectors, disciplines, and communities. Specific NSDI CAP areas of emphasis include:
documenting, implementing, and providing outreach for FGDC geospatial standards including
metadata; expanding geographic information coordination across and between organizational
levels; promoting geospatial best practices; advancing geospatial related Web services;
framework development; and clearinghouse establishment.
Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
Connecting to Collections Statewide Grants
Purpose: These grants foster partnerships among organizations in a state, commonwealth, or
territory to implement recommendations of the Heritage Health Index (HHI), which recommends
that collections in the public trust should: - provide safe conditions for their collections; develop an emergency plan; - assign responsibility for collections care; and - work together to
increase public and private support for, and raise public awareness about, collections care.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Research Opportunities in Aeronautics – 2009
Due Date(s): up to 30 April 2010
Purpose: To solicit fundamental research proposals for the four programs within ARMD: the
Airspace Systems Program, the Aviation Safety Program, the Fundamental Aeronautics Program
and the Aeronautics Test Program. The Airspace Systems Program will directly address the Air
Traffic Management (ATM) research needs of the Next Generation Air Transportation Systems
(NextGen) initiative as defined by the Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO).

A.2 Subsonic Fixed Wing (SSFW1) (Recovery Act)
Due Date: 30 October 2009
Purpose: To develop system-level, multi-disciplinary capabilities for both civilian and military
applications. The program also provides long-term investment in research to support and sustain
expert competency in critical core areas of aeronautics technology. The Fundamental
Aeronautics Program encompasses research and technology spanning four (4) flight regimes:
Subsonic Fixed Wing, Subsonic Rotary Wing, Supersonics and Hypersonics. It also supports
NASA’s Vision for Space Exploration by providing key aeronautical capabilities that can be
adapted for high-speed vehicles exiting and entering the atmosphere of our planet as well as
operating throughout the atmospheres of other planetary bodies such as Mars.
ROA 2009: A.3 Subsonic Rotary Wing Project (SSRW1)
Purpose: To develop validated physics-based multidisciplinary design and analysis tools for
rotorcraft, integrated with technology development, enabling rotorcraft with advanced
capabilities to fly as designed for any mission. Meeting this challenge will require innovative
technologies and methods, with an emphasis on integrated, multidisciplinary, first-principle
computational tools specifically applicable to the unique problems of rotary wing aircraft. The
focus of the Subsonic Rotary Wing project of the Fundamental Aeronautics program is the civil
utility of rotorcraft. Several facets will be addressed at the fundamental research level:
efficiency, including aerodynamic performance and structural weight; productivity, which
requires high speed, large payload, long range, and good maneuverability; and environmental
acceptance, particularly noise and handling qualities. Without intending to predict where the
design process will lead when truly effective design and analysis tools are available, some very
promising (and very challenging) configurations can be identified to drive the required
fundamental research.
A.4 Supersonics Project (SUP1) (Recovery Act)
The Project supports the Fundamental Aeronautics Program strategy of developing systems level
multidisciplinary capabilities for supersonic civilian and military applications. The Supersonics
Project is a broad-based effort designed to develop knowledge, capabilities and technologies that
support vehicles that fly in the supersonic speed regime with a focus on eliminating the
efficiency, environmental and performance barriers to practical supersonic cruise vehicles. The
Project has identified a set of key Technical Challenges that are barriers to success for this
vehicle type.

National Endowment for The Humanities (NEH)
America's Media Makers Development Grants
Purpose: To support the development of humanities content and interactivity that excite, inform,
and stir thoughtful reflection upon culture, identity, and history in creative and new ways. Grants
for America’s Media Makers should encourage dialogue, discussion, and civic engagement, and
they should foster learning among people of all ages. To that end, the Division of Public
Programs urges applicants to consider more than one format for presenting humanities ideas to
the public.NEH offers two categories of grants for media projects: Development Grants and
Production Grants. Development grants enable media producers to collaborate with scholars to
develop humanities content and format and to prepare programs for production.

Purpose: Funding under this opportunity includes support for nuclear science, engineering, and
related disciplines to develop a workforce capable of the design, construction, operation, and
regulation of nuclear facilities and the safe handling of nuclear materials. This announcement is

retain highly-qualified individuals in academic teaching careers. Funding under this

areas during the first 6 years of their career.
Nuclear Education Curricula Development Grant, Fiscal Year 2010
Due Date: 1 February 2010
Purpose: To support courses, studies, training, curricula, and disciplines pertaining to nuclear
safety, nuclear security, nuclear environmental protection, and other fields that the Commission
determines to be critical to the NRC’s regulatory mission. The NRC Nuclear Education Grant
Program’s primary purpose is supporting and developing the educational infrastructure necessary
to allow the Nation to safely move its nuclear energy initiatives forward.
Scholarship and Fellowship Education Grant, Fiscal Year 2010
Purpose: For undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships, the nuclear development
supported by this funding is intended to benefit the nuclear sector broadly. Consequently, NRC
requires scholarship and fellowship recipients to serve six (6) months in nuclear-related
employment for each full or partial year of academic support. The employment may be with
NRC, other Federal agencies, State agencies, Department of Energy laboratories, nuclear-related
industry, or academia in the recipients sponsored fields of study. NRC may waive, in whole or in
part, the service obligation, upon determination that compliance by the individual is impractical.

Civic Education in Georgia Grant
Purpose: The program will activate students’ knowledge about democratic institutions, principles
and practices, instill an ethic of participatory democracy in teachers, students and administrators,
and create a foundation for constructive and effective citizen participation in Georgia’s political
processes. The main focus of this project will be on school-based civic education for older
students (grades 9 – 12). The principal counterpart in the Government of Georgia (GOG) will be
the Ministry of Education and Science (MES). The project will also collaborate with individual
schools, school boards, teachers, students, local NGOs, publishers and others to address a variety
of improvements in this sector.
