Registration fees for physicians cover the general scientific sessions, a comprehensive program
syllabus, Saturday and Sunday breakfasts, and all refreshment breaks. Additional fees are required
for optional CME sessions and the Saturday evening party honoring Tad Fisher. Registration is
accepted based on space availability. On-site registration may be possible but call first to be sure!
Refunds, minus a $50 administrative fee, will be made upon receipt of written request. No refunds
will be made for cancellations made after December 8th.

OBJECTIVES
Physicians attending this program will receive current information on a diversity of medical subjects
pertinent to patient care in daily practice. See specific objectives for each topic. Subject material
was chosen based on assessed needs, future trends, and relevance to quality patient care. At the
conclusion of the program, registrants will have a working and applicable understanding of these
topics and will be provided written materials for future reference. This meeting also allows an
opportunity for students, residents, practicing physicians, educators, and faculty to interact
academically, professionally, and socially.
GENERAL CME SESSION
SYLLABUS REVIEW
Participants will (1) have the opportunity to familiarize him/herself with the day’s presentations
including charts, graphs, statistical data, and content, reinforcing key concepts; (2) recommend to
the moderator additional areas that they would like discussed or emphasized; (3) prepare questions
in advance, covering areas relevant to the topic and needs of the participants; and (4) ask questions
directly of the moderator to clear up any uncertainties prior to the presentation.
PEDIATRIC OTOLARYNGOLOGY
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) discuss the diagnosis and management of common
ear problems in children, (2) describe indication of tonsillectomies/adenoidectomies, and (3) identify
the various surgical procedures for treating congenital deafness.
PEDIATRIC HEARING ASSESSMENT
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) identify the facts surrounding pediatric hearing
loss; (2) define EDHI; (3) discuss the outcomes of untreated hearing loss; (4) describe updates on
treatment; and (5) examine legal ramifications of missing the diagnosis.
OVERACTIVE BLADDER
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) diagnose overactive bladder and urge urinary
incontinence during patient work-up using appropriate questions and screening tools, (2) develop
effective individualized management plans for overactive bladder and urge urinary incontinence
that incorporates behavioral and pharmaco-therapeutic interventions, and (3) identify co-morbid
conditions and factors associated with urinary incontinence that mandate referral to a sub-specialist.
BREAST CANCER PREVENTION ISSUES FOR THE RURAL PHYSICIAN
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) assess breast cancer risk for individual women
patients accurately, (2) identify patients to whom breast cancer risk reduction is feasible and should
be considered, (3) describe the reduction in breast cancer risk in older women being treated for
osteoporosis with Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs), and (4) discuss with
menopausal patients the risks and benefits of SERMs and a comparison to hormonal replacement
therapy and no pharmacologic intervention.

EVIDENCE-BASED ANSWERS AT THE POINT OF CARE
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) test their knowledge of current best practices,
(2) identify the frequency of clinical questions that arise in their everyday practice, and (3) describe
how electronic resources can be used to get evidence-based answers.
DO ASK, DO TELL: SUCCESSFUL SMOKING INTERVENTIONS
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) describe advances in understanding the genetic
components of smoking, (2) recognize treatment strategies including medical/pharmaceutical and
lifestyle treatment options for smoking cessation, (3) implement updates to smoking cessation
guidelines, and (4) use useful and practical hands-on tools and resources to assist their patients to
quit smoking.
CASE STUDIES IN CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE AND CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) describe the differences between men and women
in cardiovascular presentation and hypertension, (2) outline preventive cardiovascular care for
female patients, (3) discuss with patients both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment
options, and (4) use current Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommendations for cardiovascular
treatment and JNC-VII guidelines.
THE PRIMARY CARE CHALLENGE: IS DEPRESSION OVER-DIAGNOSED?
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) identify and diagnose patients with depression,
while paying particular attention to patient somatic symptoms, (2) effectively treat patients with
depression to a goal of achieving and maintaining remission, and (3) recognize the special issues in
unique populations.
I’M SO SLEEPY: DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF EXCESSIVE DAYTIME SLEEPINESS IN THE
PRIMARY CARE SETTING
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) differentiate between excessive sleepiness and
other sleep disorders; (2) recognize the underlying causes of excessive sleepiness to target patients
at the greatest risk; (3) review the risk factors/symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea; (4) identify the
strategies to overcome the barriers to effective management of excessive sleepiness; (5) communicate
the serious side effects of excessive sleepiness to appropriate patients; (6) recommend appropriate
behavioral strategies for dealing with excessive sleepiness based on medical evidence and expert
opinion; and (7) select appropriate therapeutic options to treat excessive sleepiness when necessary.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT PROSTATE HEALTH AND DISEASE
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) describe the common presentations and treatments
for prostatitis in different age groups, (2) explain the diagnosis of prostate cancer and the role of
PSA testing, and (3) identify the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of BPH.
FIVE THINGS I WISH I KNEW LAST YEAR
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) recognize patients on statins who may be at risk
of myopathy despite normal CPK levels, (2) identify bleeding disorders as a significant cause of
unexplained menorrhagia, and (3) provide topical nitroglycerin as a tool for healing rectal fissure.

DIABETES METABOLIC AND CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH: DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR
THE FAMILY PHYSICIAN
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) develop an effective individualized treatment plan for
patients to maintain or reduce weight, (2) outline strategies to attain tight control of diabetes, thus
impacting metabolic and cardiovascular health, and (3) discuss the importance of routine laboratory
surveillance – especially HgbA1c and kidney function.
OPTIONAL WORKSHOPS
JOINT INJECTIONS – UPPER AND LOWER EXTREMITIES
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) describe the musculoskeletal anatomy of both the
upper and lower extremities, (2) list the most common conditions treatable with injections, and
(3) describe the indications, medications, and procedures for injections.
GROUP VISITS
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) improve clinical outcomes for patients with diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, hypertension, asthma, and dyslipidemia, (2) increase productivity and billing by
20%, without working extra hours, (3) enhance patient and provider satisfaction, and (4) lower total
health care costs while increasing primary physician reimbursement.
MEDICAL ERRORS
Upon completion participants will be able to (1) discuss systems which must be in place to reduce
errors and review use of new information and communication technologies to allow for these
improvements, (2) identify the five most misdiagnosed conditions as determined by the Board of
Medicine, and (3) satisfy the State of Florida licensure requirements including a study of root-cause
analysis, error reduction and prevention, and patient safety.

Sadly we bid farewell to Executive
Vice President Tad Fisher. But we plan to
do it in a fun, festive way … a la Jimmy Buffett!
Most all who know Tad well are aware of his
enthusiasm for Buffett and the laid-back Key

send-off for Tad as he gets one step closer to his
home at the beach in Melbourne.

celebrate the many contributions
Tad has made to the Academy,
the Foundation, and the specialty
of family medicine over the past
