Pointed Tile Variations 2 Quilts Made with the “Pointed Tile’ Stamp & “Sawtooth Star” Stamp Set www.cindyblackberg.com “Lucy Boston” 28” x 28” “Garden Gate” 22 ½”x 22 ½” ©2016 Cindy Blackberg Pointed Tile Variations ©2015 Cindy Blackberg www.cindyblackberg.com Stamping vs Tracing: Assemble the Blocks: for each of the 4 blocks you will need to trace or stamp: 4 center “Pointed Tile” shapes 4 surrounding “Pointed Tile” shapes 8 outer “Pointed Tile” shapes 8 outer “Pointed Tile” shapes 24 light value “Pointed Tile” shapes For this pattern I used the “Pointed Tile” stamp and pieces from the “Sawtooth Star” stamp set available on my website. If you aren’t familiar with template stamps, look at my website. It is easier to stamp out a shape that includes the stitching line and cutting line. I used template stamps for faster preparation. These quilts were all hand pieced. The more you understand about interconnecting shapes, the more variations you can make with the shapes. So, have fun and experiment! 1. Layout 4 center pieces. 2. Lay 2 adjacent pieces right sides together. Thread a Richard Hemming size 10 sharp with quilting thread. Place a pin in the far left corner, hitting the corner underneath. Lucy Boston Quilt: I used the “Pointed Tile” stamp and the A square, B triangle, D square and E rectangle from the “Sawtooth Star” stamp set. 3. Find the top right hand corner with your needle and go down into the bottom corner. Take a stitch, then a backstitch. Fabric requirements: o 1 1/4” yard light value print o 3” squares assorted print scraps for setting pieces (at least 25) For each block: o 2 - 7” different print squares for the inside block o 2 - 10” different print squares for the outside block o 1 yard print for the border 4. Stitch along the line until you reach the corner. Come up where the pin is located, remove the pin, and backstitch twice. Cut the thread leaving a tail. 5. Sew the other 2 pieces the same way. 1. 6. To sew opposing seams, line up the pieces right sides together. Pin at the intersection with the seam allowances to the left. (Lefties would be opposite.) Sew UP to the pin, remove the pin and place the needle straight through the top seam, pop the back seam to the right and continue stitching. 10. Sew these units to the sides of the block. 7. Layout the next “round” of honeycomb pieces and stitch to the center. 11. Make 4 blocks. Press gently and set aside. 8. Layout the next round of honeycomb pieces and sew to the center. (I found it was easier to sew 2 pieces side by side first and then sew them onto the sides of the center.) Assemble the Top: You will need to stamp or cut out: 36 - assorted print D squares 1 - A print square for the center 32 - assorted print B triangles 8 - border print cut down E rectangles 4 - assorted print cut down E rectangles To make the “cut down” E rectangles, stamp the fabric with the E rectangle. Then draw a line from the second reference mark to the bottom mark. Cut the rectangle 1/4” to the right. waste trace 9. Sew units of 3 pointed tiles together 8 times per block. 2. cut 1. Sew the center square to the center rectangles to make one unit. Layout the pieces and sew together, pivoting the seams where needed. Press the top flat. D D D B B B B D E E D E D D D D E A E E 2. Cut borders 4”. Sew onto the top and miter the corners. Press. 3. Garden Gate Quilt: I used the Pointed Tile Stamp, the B triangle and D square from the Sawtooth Star stamp set. Fabric Requirements: ½ yard light print back ground 80 assorted print 3” squares (I used the same fabric more than once.) 3. Using your preferred method of applique, applique the shapes in place using the placement guide located on page 5. 4. Press your block and set aside. (You will cut it down after making one side of the pieced border.) Make the blocks: 1. Stamp 80 pointed tile pieces. Layout 4 pieces and stitch together to make an X block. (You will need 20 of these.) 4” square for center flower A 5 assorted 5” print fabric for flowers B&C 4 different green 3” squares for F leaves 1 - 6” square green for the stem 2. Stamp: 16 light print D squares 36 light print B triangles 1 - 4” square pink for the center E 1 - 2” square gold for the center flower C 3. Sew 3 blocks together (twice), inserting a D square between them. ½ yard border Applique the Center: 1. Cut out a 12” square of the back ground fabric. Fold corner to corner to make an X. Lay the fabric over the design on page 5 to center. 2. Make a bias stem by cutting out a 3/4” bias strip from the 6” square. Press the raw edges 1/4” into the center and baste the strip flat. (It should measure around 1/4” wide.) Cut into 4 equal pieces. 4. Measure the strip from edge to edge, including the seam allowance. Cut down your center applique square to this measurement. I cut my block down to 10 1/4”. 5. Sew the 3 block strip to the top and bottom of the applique block. 6. Sew 2 - 4 block strips together for the sides. 4. E D F F C B A 5. 8. Sew the other 2 sides onto the center block, inserting the D squares and B triangles where necessary. 9. Cut the border strips 3 3/4” wide x 16 3/4” long. Sew onto the quilt, inserting the remaining 4 - X blocks in the corners. 10. Press your block. C F D B A E 6. Pointed Tile Variations ©2015 Cindy Blackberg www.cindyblackberg.com This pattern is the first of a set of patterns to be used with my template stamps available on my website. This is a great way to get more use out of your stamp collection. There are at least 5 different variations that can be made with the “Pointed Tile” stamp combined with the “Sawtooth Star stamp set”. I designed the “Pointed Tile” so it could be used in conjunction with the sawtooth star pieces. I hand pieced these pieces with scraps. Hand piecing is relaxing and portable. I hope you enjoy making these pieces, too! Supply List: Each of the 3 pieces on the cover sheet have a detailed fabric supply list included inside the pattern. Other supplies to have on hand: ¨ Richard Hemming size 10 sharps for piecing Q̈uilting thread to match your fabrics for piecing ¨ Pointed Tile Stamp (available on my website) ¨ Sawtooth Star Stamp Set (available on my website) ¨ Ink pads (available on my website) ©2015 Cindy Blackberg All Rights Reserved 256 E Leatherwood Dr. Walland, TN 37804 www.cindyblackberg.com
