MANUAL BIN SORTER AND AUTOMATIC BIN SORTER
MANUAL BIN SORTER AND
AUTOMATIC BIN SORTER
The Elsag Manual Bin Sorter (MBS) and the Automatic
Bin Sorter (ABS) are the Elsag multi-tier bin Letter
Sorting Machines.
Elsag has been developing sorting systems with very
high levels of automation since the 1980s and now
leads the field in the design of completely automatic
sorting systems.
While the MBS requires manual sweeping, the ABS
automatically sweeps, wraps and labels letter
bundles, with no need for human intervention.
Ergonomic principles have been applied to the design
of both machines, to provide simple loading of mail
pieces and facilitate operation/control.
These features, along with high processing rates and
efficient sweeping, reduce the total amount of time
required to complete the sorting process.
In brief, these products are specifically designed to
operate in postal facilities where quality and prompt
delivery are the keys to improving service.
The MBS and ABS complete Elsag's range of letter
mail sorting products, flanking the single tier stacker
units and the BIPIANO (two tier stackers letter sorter).

DIFFERENT BIN SHAPES FOR MBS AND ABS
In manual MBS, to optimize sweeping operations, bins are
designed to provide top quality letter stacking and best
ergonomic grasp for operators.
In automatic ABS, bins are designed to optimize the grasp
of robot pliers. Furthermore, to reduce footprint, bins are
distributed over 10 tiers.
MANUAL BIN SORTER (MBS)
In manual MBSs, to optimize sweeping operations, bins
are designed to provide letter stacking to the highest
standards and the best possible grip for operators.
AUTOMATIC BIN SORTER (ABS)
The bin design for automatic ABS machines optimizes the
grip of robot pliers, as well as being distributed over 10
tiers to reduce footprint.
MODERN ROBOT TECHNOLOGY, A PLUS FOR ABS
Elsag Letter Sorting Machines can be configured with any
combination of single tier stackers, two tier stackers,
manual sweeping bins and automatic sweeping bins.
Any configuration of Letter Sorting Machine can be:

integrated by Buffer modules with other Letter
Systems;
ƒ
connected through standard interfaces with Elsag's
In the ABS, a sweeping subsystem performs fully
automatic bundle sweeping and wrapping.
In case of final sweeping at the end of a processing shift,
all the robots operate simultaneously to sweep the
machine very rapidly. Each bundle arrives from the bundle
conveyor system and is automatically wrapped, labelled
and finally dumped into suitable containers or carts.
MBS Key Features and benefits
Low Investment: the machine performs its core sorting task to the highest quality standards. All
other activities, like bundle wrapping and labelling, may be performed manually to reduce
investment costs.
Simplicity: letter bundles are swept from the machine and may be wrapped or bundled and
stored in trays or bags. The MBS and manual mail sorting processes are alike, thus minimizing
the impact of automation in the field.
MBS bins:
best ergonomic grasp for operators
ABS bins:
optimized grasp for robot pliers
ABS Key Features and benefits
Compact footprint: human operators are unable to manage 10 tiers of bins. Robots, however,
can easily reach any height, providing a very compact footprint. Each sorting module hosts 20
bins in only 930mm of linear footprint.
High sorting flexibility: automatic sweeping under machine Control System management
allows the active sortplans to be modified dynamically according to incoming mail flows.
Reduced Operating Costs: robotized sweeping and automatic bundling allow operating staff
levels to be reduced significantly, with the entire process requiring manual intervention only for
feeding.
High Quality of Service: the elimination of manual sweeping and bundling not only reduces
direct operating costs, but also significantly reduces sorting errors.
Reduced Cycle Time: only 10 minutes are required to sweep 200 bins. As a result operators are
not stressed to rush cut off times, while multiple sort-plans may also be run on the machine
without significantly affecting productivity.
