selective majors
 Students must understand that their major selection
does not generally dictate their career!
 Most Professional Schools are not looking for specific
undergraduate majors
 Internships, work experience and minors can
enhance their academic record and major
 This past year, the 2nd most popular undergraduate
major for all medical student applicants was

Pre-requisite Update for Selection:
 Global Studies- To be considered for this major, a
minimum of six preparatory courses must be
completed.
 Sociology, Psychology, Economics & Business Economics
 100% Completion of Major Prep to Be Considered
 All Life Science Majors Need 7 Courses
 1 year/2 courses each: Biology, Chemistry & Calculus
 1 Organic Chemistry course
 Second course in Organic Chemistry recommended
 Political Science - Minimum 3 Courses to be considered
 Introductory, International & Comparative Politics

 Psychology - no longer requires Physical Anthropology
course. Students can no longer use high school
Chemistry to fulfill the Chemistry requirement. Instead,
students can choose between one course in Chemistry
or Physics. Students no longer have to complete both
courses. All five pre-requisite courses must be
completed by Spring term prior to transfer.
 Sociology – students will be admitted to the PreSociology major. Students will not be able to change
into Sociology if they are admitted under a different
major. Students must complete at least three prerequisite courses: Introduction to Sociology, Statistics
and Finite Math (or Calculus).

 Physics B.A., Physics B.S., Astrophysics and Biophysics Students must complete minimum one year of Calculus
with Analytic Geometry and one year of Calculus-based
Physics. Physics must include Mechanics and
Electricity/Magnetism. All preparatory courses must be
completed by the spring Semester prior to transfer.
 Communication Studies –
 students must complete a minimum of four prerequisites and have a minimum 3.5 GPA by end of
Fall. Transfer students will not be able to transfer
into this major if admitted under a different major.

 Asian Languages & Cultures (Chinese, Japanese and
Korean only) - a minimum of one year in the selected
language (by spring semester prior to transfer) is
required for admissions.

Earth and Environmental Science (Minor)
European Studies (Minor)
Visual & Performing Arts Education (Minor)- Open to
students in School of Arts and Architecture or School of

Theater – the “Directing” option will remain closed for students
for another year. Available “odd” numbered years.

There is a possibility that the Post Licensure Major under our
Nursing Department might be suspended.

 You can repeat courses for which you
originally earned the equivalent of D or F
grades.
 You cannot disregard your previous
record from another country.
 Even when the student is planning to study
a completely different subject than the one
he/she was studying before.

 Does the student hold a degree or partial university
or postsecondary credential from abroad?
 How does the this pertain to the application?
 Report all courses on the self-reported section of the
application
 Report international grades, units and/or credit
hours exactly as they appear on foreign transcripts
 Be prepared to submit a copy of the record,
credential and course description

 You cannot earn lower-division credit
for language or literature courses in the
language of their H.S. instruction.
 Students must be aware that we will
require official transcripts for all postsecondary work. They should also have
a copy in case the institution they apply
request an unofficial copy during the
application process.

 Fully explain all gaps in your education.
 Complete the 2 English Composition
courses as early as possible and take
them for a letter grade. At the very
least the first English must be
completed by end of fall semester.
Did You Know?
 UCLA does not have a guaranteed admissions program
 Completion of major preparation is essential
 IGETC is not required for admissions but is recommended for
many majors
 Applications are only accepted for Fall Quarter
- Notification in late April – rolling basis
 Housing is guaranteed for 1 year for transfers
-Options include student-family housing
 Transfer students at UCLA perform academically on par with
those students who entered at the freshman level.
 Transfer graduation rates are high and comparable to native
freshman
