Your portfolio should contain 15-20 pieces of your
own work (either recently completed or currently
in progress). Include work that demonstrates your
ability to work in a variety of media, in both twoand three-dimensions. Examples include drawings, paintings, prints, collage and other mixed
media work, sculpture, ceramics, fibers work,
etc. You may also include photographs, animation, film, video, audio recordings, documentation
of performance art, etc.
Please tailor your portfolio to the specific program
area to which you are applying.
Your work should show evidence of both technical
skill and conceptual development. Basic abilities
in drawing, composition and colour-use must be
demonstrated.
Original work is preferred as long as it is flat,
unframed, and measures no more than 24”x36”
(60x90cm). CDs/DVDs or USB flash drives of
JPEG images are also acceptable. Please see
Digital Submissions on reverse for formatting
guidelines.

The Portfolio Evaluation Committee prefers
cohesive, well-edited portfolios which indicate
an applicant’s specific interests and/or thought
process.
It is recognized that applicants may have limited
training in the medium, therefore examples of
work done in other visual arts media may be
submitted to supplement the photographic portfolio.
We do not accept any glassed or framed images.

Your portfolio should demonstrate your creative
potential in Intermedia/Cyberarts.

Portfolios should consist of a maximum of 15
examples of the applicant’s work, and must be
well organized and easy to navigate.
Acceptable formats include CDs, DVDs, USB
flash drives, websites, audiotapes and text.
Video or sound work submissions must not
exceed 10 minutes running time. Applicants may
submit a composite of several videos or sound
works as long as it conforms to the 10 minute
maximum length.
Works that are flat and under 24”x36” (60x90cm)
may be submitted in original format. Large and
three-dimensional works should be submitted in
digital form.

For mail-in portfolios, please print a PDF of the
Portfolio Information Form (for either Photography,
Studio Arts or IMCA) available on the Studio Arts
website (studio-arts.concordia.ca). This form can
also be filled out in person at the time of portfolio
drop-off.
•your most recent TRANSCRIPTS
A printed photocopy of only your most recent
academic transcripts are required in addition to
any transcripts that you may have already sent to
Admissions.
•your IMAGE LIST
A numbered image list should specify the medium,
dimensions and date of completion (unless it is a
work in progress) for each work.
Write your name, Student ID number and the program
to which you are applying on the actual disc (not on
the case) using permanent marker. Don’t attach any
type of adhesive labels to your disc since these can
fall off, jam up disc drives or make the disc unreadable.
What is an Image List?
This is a one-page printed description list that corresponds numerically to each piece submitted in your
portfolio. It should contain the following information:
medium, size, date, duration (in case of time-based
work). It is not necessary to provide a detailed description of the work.
General Portfolio Tips
• Your work should be presented with care, but the
presentation should not distract from the work itself.
If you're submitting digital images, take the time to
document your work properly - your images should be
high quality, in focus, well-lit and indicate scale when
necessary.
• Don't include anything that is breakable, sharp, or
framed in the portfolio.
• Don't glue, staple, tape your required documents
(portfolio information form, letter of intent, etc) to your
portfolio. These documents should be easily located at
the front of your portfolio,
• Don't include copies of your birth certificate,
Canadian citizenship, official transcripts with your transcripts in your portfolio – these documents should be
sent directly to Admissions.
• It's not necessary to label every individual piece your Image List should contain all relevant information
related to your work.
How many people are admitted to each program?
All programs in the Studio Arts Department are competitive and selective. The annual capacity for each
program can be found on www.concordia.ca.
Can I email/upload my portfolio online?
Not at this time. The Department of Studio Arts
accepts only portfolios of original work or portfolios
submitted on CD/DVD or flashdrive.
Do I need to submit a separate portfolio for each
program?
­­­Separate portfolios are required for application to the
following programs: Photography, IMCA, Studio Arts
(this includes Ceramics, Fibres, Sculpture Painting
& Drawing, Print Media, Studio Art and Art History &
Studio Art). If you indicated in your application that you
wish to be considered for any of these major or minor
programs (as either a 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice), you
must submit the appropriate portfolio(s) for each program. Please see the specific program requirements
on the back of this pamphlet.
Can I meet with someone in regards to my portfolio?
If you would like assistance with assembling your portfolio or for evaluation feedback, the only time to meet
with faculty members is during the annual Portfolio
Day (www.portfoliodayinmontreal.com) which occurs in
the fall of every year.
When will I know the results?
By the end of April, most applicants should have
received an e-mail and/or letter from Admissions.
When can I pick up my portfolio?
As soon as you receive an admissions response, you
may pick up your portfolio from the Studio Arts Office
(VA-250). If you included a S.A.S.E. or a prepaid waybill, your portfolio will be returned at this time.

Your letter of intent should be no longer than one
page and written in English or French. In general,
it should describe your educational background
and any relevant experience in art, as well as your
expectations in relation to the programs to which
you are applying. Please refer to the specific questions that need to be addressed for the different
programs.
Please don't submit Powerpoint presentations since
these take too long to load and can be distracting
when viewing your portfolio.
I have already sent my transcripts to Admissions.
Do I need to submit another copy in my portfolio?
Yes­. This is so that the Portfolio Evaluation Committee
can see your transcripts. A photocopy of your transcript
is sufficient in this case.

In addition to your artwork, you must also
include the following items (to be placed
at the front of your portfolio):
File size is different than image size. Still images
should be submitted as numbered JPEG files (eg. 01_
LastName_FirstName, 02_LastName_FirstName, etc.)
with a resolution size around 1024x768, 72dpi. Each
image should not exceed 3MB. Video and sound files
should not exceed 60 MB each, the maximum running
time is 10 minutes total.

A portfolio of artwork for admissions to a Studio
Arts program should be a collection of your best
and most recent work in visual arts. It should represent your individual interests, abilities and explorations. Your portfolio can include original work or
digital documentation of work in two- and/or threedimensions and time-based formats. Consider
visual, conceptual, and technical proficiency in
selecting your best and most recent work. Please
tailor your portfolio to the specific program to which
you are applying.
What should my portfolio look like?
Artwork can be submitted in folders, binders, zippered
nylon portfolios, on disc, etc or a combination thereof.
The first thing in your portfolio should be your Portfolio
Information form, followed by your Letter of Intent, your
most recent transcripts, your List of Works/Image List,
a SASE or courier waybill for return (optional), followed
by your best, most recent work.
