Eighth International Water Technology Conference IWTC 2004, Alexandria, Egypt _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Alexandria – March 26-28, 2004 Under the Auspices of H. E. Prof. Dr. Atef Mohammed Abeid Prime Minister Eighth International Water Technology Conference IWTC 2004, Alexandria, Egypt _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Eighth International Water Technology Conference IWTC 2004, Alexandria, Egypt _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Eighth International Water Technology Conference IWTC 2004, Alexandria, Egypt _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Water is a precious resource; we have to treat all its related subjects carefully. The water resources are limited we have to best utilize it. The necessity of developing new resources is a must. In fact the economic development requires additional water resources, then the treatment of the used water without damage to the environment. All these research issues are going on research in most Egyptian Universities and Research Centers. Research is the only way to respond to the water shortage problems, and waste water treatment problems. I am sure that your Honorable conference in its Eighth session will add fruitful and blessed steps to this issue. Prof. Dr. Moufid Shehab Minister High Education and Minister of State for Scientific Research Eighth International Water Technology Conference IWTC 2004, Alexandria, Egypt _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Over the past few decades, demand for water has increased due to the growth of population and the improved living standards. These high demands did not match the limited available water resources in many places where water shortage has reached crisis levels. Water quality has also deteriorated, due to pollution by wastes and contaminants from cities, industry and agriculture. The costs of creating, operating and maintaining water systems have risen dramatically. These issues have contributed in making the water resources management more complex and require more investments to match the growing demands. In the past, we were concerned much more of water quantity than water quality. However, these days it realized the importance of monitoring, evaluating and protecting water quality. Thus, the primary role of the ministry is to ensure that sufficient water of good quality is available and accessible for the different users and to ensure the optimal socioeconomic division of scarce resources. This implies, among others, the formulation of policies, strategies, a regulatory framework, and a monitoring system. The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation has prepared a National Water Policy till the year 2017 including three main policy themes: 1) Optimal use of available water resources; 2) Water quality protection and pollution abatement; 3) Development of new water resources in cooperation with the Nile Basin riparian countries. So, one of the main tasks of the Ministry nowadays is focusing on water quality protection and pollution abatement. The Water Quality Unit was established through the ministry to follow-up water quality assessment in the country. Moreover, more researches are needed to be carried out in this field. Thus, the government of Egypt namely the MWRI has established the NWRC, which is regarded as a unique organization developed in Egypt to conduct research at the highest policy-making level. Thus, this conference will help in discussing different water resources problems and new technologies in this field which will help in protecting our ecosystem. Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Abou Zeid Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Eighth International Water Technology Conference IWTC 2004, Alexandria, Egypt _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Water and its related activities is a relevant issue. This threatening issue to our national security requires intensified research efforts. The Problem is manifested by shortage in resources and damage to the environment resulting from the used water. Certainly, research is the only way to respond to these problems. Mansoura university has a long experience in all water related aspects, as water distribution, water demand management, water desalination, waste water treatment technologies, potable water treatment technologies, many of these researches is published in international conferences and reviews. I would like to extend a warm welcome to every participant in the conference, and I hope to you a successful and fruitful conference. Eighth International Water Technology Conference IWTC 2004, Alexandria, Egypt _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ About Alexandria A lexandria, the largest port in Egypt and one of the major summer resorts on the Mediterranean sea and lies in the North West of the Nile Delta 225 km from Cairo. Two deep-Water Harbors make it one of the most important ports of the Mediterranean and it is the center of the Egyptian fishing and Cotton Industries. It is outstanding location: All Year round mild climate fine sandy beaches stretching over 40 km. Alexandria was named after Alexander the Great, who ordered the foundation of the city in 332 B.C. on the site of a small village, called Rakoda in order to connect Egypt with his fatherland. He charged his architect Democrats with the planning of the new city immortalized his name along history. After the death of Alexander the Great, his general Ptolemy declared himself King of Egypt and founded the Ptolemaic dynasty which ruled Egypt for three centuries. During this period, Alexandria was the capital of Egypt for nearly a thousand years. Few cities in the world can vie with its glorious past but the majority certainly has more to show. Virtually nothing remains of the marble places and temples for which the city was renowned antiquity. The Hellenic past has been completely submerged and today the city’s aspect is entirely modern. The sea front with its railings and open-ended squares is reminiscent, although many of the buildings away from the front retain an Egyptian integrity, it is not coincidental that many of the European communities choose Alexandria for their residences. Climate In March, mean temperature has a minimum of 15°C, and a maximum of 25°C. Hotel Palestine has a private beach and water temperature is reasonable for sea bathes. In the area, there is a water sports club, including sailing, launching and diving. Historical Brief of Alexandria Alexandria is a city to explore at random, it’s as important to enjoy the atmosphere, as it is to see the “sights”. The city center now stretches back from Midan Saad Zaghloul, on the seafront, where there is a statue of the nationalist leader. This was formerly the site of the Caesareum, a magnificent temple begun by Cleopatra for her lover Antony and subsequently completed by their enemy Octavian and dedicated to himself. Two famous obelisks (one, known as “Cleopatra’s Needle”, now on the Embankment in London, the other in New Eighth International Water Technology Conference IWTC 2004, Alexandria, Egypt _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ York’s Central Park) were once here but all traces of the temple have disappeared. Graeco - Roman Alexandria Little of the greatest city of antiquity remains to be seen today - although an international project to rebuild the Alexandria Library, which once housed laboratories. The Roman Theatre Over 30 years of excavation have uncovered many Roman remains including this well-preserved theatre with marble seats for up to 800 spectators, galleries and sections of mosaic-flooring. In Ptolemaic times this area was the Park of Pan, a pleasure garden surrounded by Roman villas and baths. The Graeco - Roman Museum The collection, which covers the period from the 3rd century BC to the 7th century AD, is a fascinating record of a civilization in the process of change as religions merged and society evolved. In Alexandria, Graeco - Roman and Pharaonic religions mingled in the cult of Serapis; the shift from pagan religions to Christianity can also be seen in the exhibits which include mummies, Hellenistic statues, busts of Roman emperors, Tanagra figurines and early Christian antiquities. Islamic Alexandria El-Gomruk and El-Anfushi are interesting neighborhoods to explore, for their souks and street life as well as Ottoman mosques and mashrabiya decorated houses. The Mosque of Abu El-Abbas-Mursi, dedicated to the patron saint of Alexandria’s fishermen and sailors, this is the city’s biggest mosque. Fort Qaitbey On the northern tip of the Eastern Harbor, sultan Qaitbey’s Fort is an Alexandria landmark. The Fort is on the original site of Pharos, Alexandria’s ancient lighthouse, built in 279 BC to a height of 125 meters and topped with a statue of Poseidon. Although Pharos was restored at various times it had finally crumbled by the time that the original Fort was built here, in the 1480s. Today, the Fort contains a mosque and the Naval Museum and provides wonderful views of the city and the Mediterranean. Eighth International Water Technology Conference IWTC 2004, Alexandria, Egypt _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Montazah Palace and Gardens Acres of formal gardens and a beautiful beach make Montazah the foremost city pleasure grounds. Montazah Palace, a grand structure built in a mixture of Turkish and Florentine styles, is now a state guesthouse. Pleasant afternoons can also be spent in Shallalat Gardens, include rockeries and an artificial pond, Nouzha Gardens, near Alexandria Zoo, and Antoniadis Gardens, where classical statuary is set among what were once the grounds of a Greek family. Travel to Egypt You will need to contact your nearest Egyptian Consulate to obtain a visa. The letter sent by organizing committee indicating the acceptance of your paper can be used for this purpose. Most airlines fly to Cairo and some fly directly to Alexandria, such as Lufthansa, Olympic (Greek Airways), British Airways. Egypt Air is the official carrier of the conference. Travel to Alexandria There are 2 daily domestic flights leaving Cairo airport for Alexandria at 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., however it is much cheaper and more interesting to travel by land to Alexandria. Most international flights arrive in Cairo in the evening, which may be too late for public transport to Alexandria. It may be necessary to stay overnight in Cairo and travel to Alexandria the following day. There are several hotels close to the airport and many in downtown Cairo. Trains depart for Alexandria from the main railway station in Ramses Square in downtown Cairo. Departures are hourly from 6 am to 10 p.m. and cost about US$ 10 per person. The nearest station to Hotel Palestine is Sidi Gaber, which is the penultimate stop before the main station in Alexandria. For the nonstop express trains to Alexandria, Sidi Gaber is the first stop. The journey takes about 2h 30m. You will need to take a taxi to your hotel (about US$ 5). Buses (Super Jet and West Delta) travel from Cairo airport to Alexandria hourly from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., with one departure 1 a.m. The cost is about US$ 8 and the journey takes about 3 hours. The buses also depart from downtown Cairo. There are also limousines, which can be hired at the airport to go directly to Alexandria. The cost is about US$ 60. Currency Exchange Banks opening hours are 08:30 to 13:30, Sunday to Thursday. Most hotels and exchange offices are open for more extended periods. You can change foreign currency into local currency at the airport. One US dollar is about 6.15 Egyptian pounds. There are no restrictions on exchange Eighth International Water Technology Conference IWTC 2004, Alexandria, Egypt _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ of foreign currency in Egypt. Major credit cards are widely accepted by most hotels, restaurants and shops. Traveler’s cheques may be refused in some places and it is best therefore to exchange them at a bank. Useful Phone Numbers The international code for Egypt is 20, the code for Alexandria is (0)3, and (0)2 for Cairo. Ambulance Police 121, 122.
