In the first match of the evening, the Washington Lions defeated Blue Clinton-Massie, 52-27. In the second match of the night, Miami Trace trounced Clinton-Massie, 66-3. In the final of the roundrobin, Miami Trace topped Washington, 42-24. “We’ve never beaten Clinton-Massie, so that was a huge win for us,” Washington head coach Louis Reid said. “I was very happy with they way our young guys wrestled. We have a very young line-up. We only had two seniors wrestling tonight (Cory Keeton and Cameron Hines). “Adam Cook was down a few points at 152 and he stepped up and got a big pin in the third period,” Reid said. “That kind of put us on a roll. “Scylar Fox wrestled a heck of a match against a returning SCOL placer at 160,” Reid said. “Cameron (Hines) wrestled up a weight class at 171. He did a pretty good job. “Cameron Shaw picked up a pin at 189,” Reid said. “That was huge. Then Riley got a pin at 215. Then senior Cory Keeton, this is really his first time breaking into the varsity and staying there, he picked up a big pin against Stenger. Cory’s an undersized heavyweight and he wrestled really smart tonight. I was really happy to see him pick up that pin against Massie. That just helped our momentum keep going.” “We knew Massie had quite a few kids coming back from last year,” Miami Trace head coach Jack Anders said. “We had eight freshmen and sophomores in the line-up. We have two seniors who returned after not wrestling the last two years: Benny Murphy and Cody Casteel. “We talked about expectations,” Anders said. “I felt that we let our guard down last year. We underachieved as a team and as a coaching staff. The kids weren’t prepared and that’s my fault. “We took (last year’s loss to Massie) a little personally,” Anders said. “We got pushed off the perch and tonight we wanted to get back after it and show who we are and that’s a tough, hard-nosed Miami Trace wrestling team. “It was a team effort from top to bottom,” Anders said. “From 103 to heavyweight. We picked up a big pin from Hayden Bottorff. Josh McKay and Trent Duffy picked up wins. Everybody picked up wins. “We’ve talked to our young kids that they had to step it up,” Anders said. “We’ve worked extremely hard on pinning this year. We’ve told the kids, ‘when you put your opponent on his back, let’s pin him.’ “(Against Washington) we got a pin at 103, we got a pin at 112,” Anders said. “Dustin McFadden wrestled Washington 52, Clinton-Massie 27 145 - Vandyke (WCH) pinned Brown (C-M) 152 - Cook (WCH) pinned Gardon (C-M), 5:32 160 - Richardson (C-M) pinned Fox (WCH), 5:41 171 - Running (C-M) pinned Hines (WCH), 1:30 189 - C. All three teams were really young tonight. It was just going to be a matter of whose younger kids would step up. And Trace got the better of us tonight. “We saw our team improve during that match,” Reid said. “Our kids were digging down and fighting.” One of the highlights for Reid was a battle of Statequalifiers in Washington junior Riley Shaw going up against senior Travis McIntosh of Miami Trace. Shaw won this titanic battle, 3-2 in three overtimes. “Riley got an escape in the third overtime,” Reid said. “It was a great match and we knew it would be. McIntosh was second at State last year at 189 and Riley was fourth at State at 215. Those two were both SCOL championship last year, as well. “Cameron Shaw had a nice win there,” Reid said. “Cory Keeton had another big pin in that match. It was great to see.” Washington wrestles Saturday in a tri-meet at Wilmington along with Franklin. Miami Trace and Washington will be taking part in the GMVWA tournament Dec. 28 and 29. Record-Herald, Thursday, December 16, 2010 SPORTS Visit our Web site at: www.recordherald.com Three Panthers capture 1st place at Hamilton Township meet Miami Trace The wrestling team began the 2010-11 season at the Hamilton Township Classic on Dec. 4. Miami Trace finished tied for second with Nelsonville York and Hamilton Township with 216.5 points. The winner of the tournament was Bishop Ready with 226.5 total points. “It was a good first tournament for the young Miami Trace team,” head coach Jack Anders said. “We were able to enter extras into the tournament.” Josh McKay placed fifth at 103 pounds. McKay went 2-2 on the day, defeating Cody Pinkerton of Miami Trace. “Both kids wrestled for the first time as a varsity wrestler,” Anders said. “Cody went 1-3 on the day. Both wrestlers did a nice job and know what they need to improve on.” Trent Duffy went 4-1 on the day at 112 pounds. “Trent wrestled a tough match against a Massillon Perry kid,” Anders said. “It was his only loss of the day. Trent gained valuable mat time also as it was his first varsity tournament. Trent finished with fourth place finish due to wrestling the maximum of five matches.” Dustin McFadden was sidelined with an injury but was expected back for the Greenville duels. Keaton Webb went 4-0 to capture first place at 125 pounds. “Keaton had a tough match against another Massillon Perry kid (winning, 11-7),” Anders said. “Keaton went on to win his finals match and place first. Keaton did a nice job, (he) just needs to find a secondary move on his feet. (He had a) nice tournament.” Brody Price saw his first varsity action, according to Anders. The 130-pounder went 2-3 on the day. “Brody did some good things and sometimes was overpowered by older kids,” Anders said. “(I) talked with Brody about getting stronger and continuing to improve. (He) did a nice job for his first tournament.” Price placed sixth. Jeff Litteral saw limited varsity action last year, but is now a full-time starter at the varsity level this year, according to Anders. “Jeff went 1-4 on the day, but did some positive things throughout the day,” Anders said. “Jeff wrestled better than his record indicated. He understands each time out that he will improve.” Litteral wrestled at 140 pounds. Benny Murphy went 22 on the day. “Benny did some good things and some bad, but overall wrestled hard and continued to improve throughout the day,” Anders said. “Benny finished fifth overall. Benny will need to improve upon his technique and conditioning.” “Cody Casteel saw his first varsity action,” Anders said. “Cody did not wrestle last year and only part of his sophomore year. Cody wrestled well going 4-1 on the day. Cody defeated Boodereit of Bishop Ready to secure third place. Time will help sharpen Cody’s mat skills.” Nathan Bowers went 41 at 152 pounds. “Nathan wrestled a good tournament,” Anders said. “Nathan wrestled Massilo of Van Wert in the finals. Nathan was defeated by Massilo (a two-time state-qualifier and stateplacer). Nathan understands the sport of wrestling and what he needs to work on.” Nick Havens was another Panther freshman seeing his first varsity action. “Nick went 1-4 on the day but was aggressive and continued to move forward,” Anders said. “I believe Nick will improve from week to week. Nick did not place.” Nick Gilbert went 3-2 on the day at 160 pounds. “Nick wrestles hard, but needs to wrestle under control and not get himself into trouble,” Anders said. “Nick placed third on the day. Nick understands the importance of improving each day in the wrestling room.” Conner Dement wrestled varsity for the second time in his career. “Conner went 2-3 on the day, but had two close matches swing the other way,” Anders said. “Conner needs to improve his offense from his feet and keep attacking.” Dement placed sixth overall at 160 pounds. Cody Snyder went 5-0 on the day, defeating Bishop Ready’s Halko in the finals in overtime at 171 pounds. “Cody wrestled a smart match and later in the match started working his offense,” Anders said. “Cody has improved each year that he has wrestled, just needs to have confidence in what he is doing on the mat.” Josh Teasley went 4-1 on the day. “Josh wrestled well, but needs to continue to work on shots and bottom wrestling,” Anders said. “Josh is a good wrestler on top that can be a neutralizer. Josh really wrestled well and understands the importance of improving daily.” Teasley placed third overall at 189 pounds. “Travis McIntosh (picked up where he) left off last year going 4-0 and taking first place,” Anders said. “Travis wrestled well, but Travis understands that he needs to continue to improve on his wrestling skills. Travis pinned Tucker of Hamilton Twnshp in the finals.” McIntosh wrestled at 215 pounds.
