Arizona GOP says it won’t need to alter immigration views to attract Latino vote

PHOENIX — Arizona Republicans say they don’t
need to change their stance on immigration or
even their message to attract the Latino voters who
largely defected last year.
Sen. Don Shooter, R-Yuma, said the GOP already has the right message for Hispanics who
are a growing percentage of the state’s voting-age
population.
“We all want a decent education for our kids; we
all want a good-paying job; we all want to live in
peace and security,’’ he said. Shooter said the party
needs to “accentuate the positive and negate the
negative.’’

PHOENIX — State lawmakers are moving to
cut by half what cities and counties have to pay
to publish their legal notices.
The measure approved 31-27 Monday by the
House would eliminate the need of all counties
and cities of more than 100,000 to buy space in
newspapers for their notices. Instead, they would
be able to put the information online.
But Rep. Warren Petersen, R-Gilbert, was able
to line up the votes only by promising to alter the
measure when it now goes to the Senate.
First, Petersen agreed to what he called a 5050 rule.
“As I understand the law, if it’s a daily notice
it has to be published four times, four days in a
row, for a city or county,’’ he said., “If it’s a weekly notice it has to be published two weeks.’’
The promised modified version of HB 2533
would slash those publication requirements in
half, meaning just two daily or one weekly notice.
In exchange, cities and counties wanting that reduced mandate would also be required post the
same notices on a web site.
Second, Petersen said the final version would
apply to all cities, no matter how small, allowing all of them to take advantage of the reduced
publication mandate.
The legislation still drew some opposition.
“Transparency can’t be 50-50,’’ said Rep. Lisa
Otondo, D-Yuma.
She said the legislation undermines the intent
of the publication requirements, which is to have
an outside third party ensure that notice is given. And Otondo, seeing this as a first step toward
totally eliminating newspaper publication, said
web postings cannot be archived in the same secure ways as an actual ink-on-paper notice.
And Rep. Bruce Wheeler, D-Tucson, said the
complaints about the cost of publishing to taxpayers are overstated. He said the total annual
publishing bill for all the counties was less than
$380,000 out of total budgets of $6.3 billion.

are confusing the issue of border security, on which
he said the GOP has taken a strong stance, with
immigration policy.
“They should be two separate issues,’’ he said.

not, at least not in the minds of Hispanics.

SWINEHART, Robert B. “Bob”
Robert B. “Bob”
Swinehart, of Sun City,
AZ for 21 years passed
away peacefully in his
sleep with his wife by
his side on March, 12,
2013. He was born on
January, 28, 1929 to
Veda (nee “Kaserman”)
and William Swinehart
in New Philadelphia,
Ohio, the youngest of
eight children.
Bob married his first
love, Mary (nee “Kinsey”) in 1948 through
1981 when she passed
away. They had two
children together, a
daughter Cynthia from
Spearfish, SD, and a son, James from Chicago Heights,
Illinois.
In 1984 Bob met his second love Theresa, from the
south suburbs of Chicago also. Not minding their 21
years age difference the married in 1990. It lasted almost
22 1/2 years.
Bob enjoyed golf, billiards, bowling and roller skating.
He treasured nothing more than his wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends. Bob was a loving family man
and would stop and help anyone in need. He and Theresa
worshiped at All Saints of the Desert Episcopal Church
in Sun City for 21 years. They both had been very active
participants and enjoyed meeting new parishioners.
Bob is survived by his wife There (nee “Mary Roark”
& “Walwer”); his sisters, Vivian Maxine, 88 and Ruth
the oldest at 96, both still living in parts of Ohio; his
daughter and son-in-law Cynthia (Cindy) and Paul Edwards; his five grandchildren: Christy, Jennifer, Brandon, Corey and Nicholas; his three great-grandchildren:
Olivia, Abigail and Brandon Jr.; many wonderful nieces
and nephews; his two step-sons, John and Matthew Walwer and their families. Not to be left out his two small
spirited Chihuahua’s Toby and Tara. In addition to his
parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son,
James (Jim) Hart 58, who passed away in 2008. Also,
Bobby’s five older brothers: David (Dave), William (Bud),
Howard (Howie), Donald (Duck), and John (Jack) all of
which served and returned home from World War II. Bob
wanted to serve also, but being only 16 when the war
ended, his mother said, I have five sons already in the
service I’m not letting you go.

Hispanic population, saying it would be a “tremendous benefit’’ to have a presidential candidate who

“must embrace and champion comprehensive immigration reform.’’
But Rep. Steve Smith, R-Maricopa, said the party already has a good message for the Latino community.
“What do people like? God? Family? Pro-life? Protraditional marriage?’’ he said. “Boy, that sounds a
lot like our platform.”
WRIGHT, Alta Lea (Smith)
Alta Lea (Smith) Wright, 79,
of Sun City West and Berthoud,
CO passed away peacefully at
home on February 22, 2013.
She was born on February 12,
1934 at Oshkosh, Nebraska and
was preceded in death by infant
daughter Cheri Ann.
Alta is survived by her husband
Arnold, sisters Alliene and
Brenda, brother Syd, sons Brock
and Steven, daughters Deborah
and Michele. She also leaves behind 7 grandchildren, 2
great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held
at Sun City West Christian Church, 20803 N. 151st
Ave. (corner of R.H. Johnson and 151st Ave.) on March
27th, 2013. The service will be at 11am, Pastor Wayne
Dykstra officiating.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the Friends of the R.H. Johnson Library,
where Alta volunteered until becoming ill with multiple
myeloma in February of 2011.

SENN, Donald F.
Donald F. Senn, age 85, of Sun City, Arizona,
passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013. He was
born in Marshfield, Wisconsin on July 14, 1927,
the son of Eugene and Adeline (nee Disbrow) Senn.
He was also a long time resident of Oconomowoc,
Wisconsin.
He was married April 16, 1949, in Marshfield,
to Beverly Gnotke. He will be sadly missed by
his wife, Beverly, his children; Tom (Sue) Senn,
Cindy Kunkel, Tim (Cindy) Senn, and Julie (Jeff)
Mallow; thirteen grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He is further survived by his sister,
Marilyn (Eugene) Engebrecht. He was preceded in
death by his parents, his brother Paul and sister
Susan Strand.
Donald, along with his father, were the founders
of Senn Plywood & Door, New Berlin, Wisconsin. He
was a long time member of the Rotary Club of New
Berlin, Metropolitan Builders Association, Elks
Lodge of Waukesha, Church of the Palms, Sun City
and First Congregational United Church of Christ,
Oconomowoc. Donald also served in the United
States Navy.
Services will be held at a later date. Condolences
