Notre Dame 1964 Classic Corvette Car Raffle
You can purchase your tickets online at www.notredamehighschool.com, stop by the school and
pay in person or call the school at 607-734-2267 ext. 317 to pay with a credit card.
This car is a beautiful 1964 Corvette Convertible, 4 speed, small block (NOM) with the factory
original body/trim tag. It has Riverside Red paint with Red interior and a White soft top. This is a
nice car with very nice paint and what appears to be a no-hit body. It does have the original seats,
carpet, door panels, dash pads, color combination, trim and VIN plates, all in very nice condition.
This honey of a car looks, runs and drives well and would be a great car to drive and take to local
shows and meets.
Tickets are 6 for $100 or $25 each. Drawing will be held January 4, 2012. Need not be present to

a Message from the President
In December each year, analysts look into their crystal balls as
they attempt to predict the future, and many report that 2012
will be a watershed year for personal technology. Certainly,
the importance of staying “connected” through the latest
technologies is becoming both an essential and unavoidable
reality. Here at Notre Dame we are working hard to keep up
to date.
Last summer, we changed our Student Information System as
well as the Information System for our donor base. As with
any transition, there were challenges and an expected learning
curve for the teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators,
not to mention, the Advancement Office. Within the Donor
Connect System alone, the dead had been resurrected and
addresses which had been previously updated were reversed
to their prior form. The Student Information System, RenWeb,
while providing us the ability to utilize the web to enhance
our communication with both students and parents, has also
not been devoid of difficulties. Not surprising, the faculty and
staff struggle far more than most of the students with such
technological advancements. Today’s students are connected at
all times, tweeting, texting, surfing, blogging or glogging.
Already e-mail is on the decline and social networking is
on the rise. In the future you can expect your connections
with the school to be on-line and instant. Certainly, future
advancements in technology will make communication much
easier and efficient.
The school has, for years, participated in online learning
through the Mercy Network, and historically our students
have taken advantage of this opportunity during the summer,
for either enrichment or review. This year, though, Notre
Dame took the next step, offering upper-level French classes
online. Mrs. Dean, teacher of French and Spanish, cites the
advantages of such an experience stating, “This is a wonderful
and unique opportunity for one on one instruction. It enables
our students to continue French language education when
it would not otherwise be possible due to the diminishing
enrollment in the language.”
In order to ensure such opportunities continue to be available,
we will have to, during the next summer, update our computer
hardware and software. Our director of technology reports,
“We need everything!” It will be necessary to update the
Mac lab with hardware and software including “iWorks” and
“iLife”. We will need to apply for a new site license for Adobe
Creative Suite and the windows hardware and software should
be updated as well.
It is through your generosity that we have previously had the
resources to make these changes which are so necessary for
our students and teachers. We hope that you will be able to
continue to support our advances in technology. Thank you so
very much for your support of our school.

On November 30, 2011 Notre Dame High School announced the opening of a regional junior high school with the following press release.
Notre Dame High School in Elmira to add Junior High
ELMIRA, New York – The Board of Trustees of Notre Dame High
School and the Sisters of Mercy of the NYPPaW Community,
in collaboration with the Department of Catholic Schools at
the Diocese of Rochester, are pleased to announce the opening
of a regional Junior High School on the campus at 1400 Maple
Avenue, Elmira, NY. Beginning in September of 2012, Notre
Dame will welcome seventh and eighth graders as a part of the
school community.
“We are very excited to welcome these new students to our
facility,” said Sr. Mary Walter Hickey, RSM, school president. “We
believe that the expanded programs and opportunities here at
Notre Dame High School will help them to further their academic
and personal growth.”
The school plans to offer the new students a core curriculum
which encourages critical thinking and discovery, accelerated

courses in language, math and science and a co-curricular program
which includes participation in a modified sports program. An
informational meeting for parents interested in sending their
children to the new Catholic Regional Junior High has been
scheduled for Monday, December 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Notre Dame
High School. The school was founded in 1955 and currently serves
230 students.

The informational meeting on December 12th was well attended
and we were able to answer the most pressing questions and
will have an open house for interested families in January. Please
pray for the success of this project which will provide for the
continuation of a K-12 Catholic School system in the southern tier
of New York.

McAuley Award Dinner 2011
The Notre Dame Community was again out for an exciting evening on Tuesday, October
18th at the Elmira Country Club to show support for this year’s recipients – Sister Mary Lou
Seitz, RSM (formerly Sister Nathaniel) and Mr. G. Thomas Tranter, Jr. ’72. Approximately
250 people attended representing Notre Dame faculty, alumni, alumni parents, friends and
parents in addition to area businesses and corporations. A cocktail reception was held from
6-7pm followed by the welcome from Tom Santulli’67, who again was our wonderful Master
of Ceremonies. Reverend Richard Farrell gave the Invocation with a delicious meal to follow.
The Most Reverend Matthew H. Clark followed with remarks and the presentation of awards.
Sister Nancy Hoff, RSM gave the Benediction. The committee that helped plan the evening and
solicit corporate sponsors and guests was again chaired by G. Thomas Tranter, Jr.’72. This years
committee members were Steve Agan’79, Daniel Burke, John Gough, Sister Mary Walter Hickey,
RSM, Pat Jackson, R. Joseph Landy’72, Susan Underwood LaVelle’75, Joe Manning’56, Don
Quick and Mike Wayne’78.

strong commitment to service, his dedication
to improving life in the Southern Tier and his
deep faith make him worthy of this year’s
McAuley Award.

Joel Stephens Memorial Park
The Joel Stephens Memorial Park was dedicated in September of 2010. Below is a list of the

through their purchase of black granite benches, cobblestone blocks or monetary donations.
Our special thanks to the Joel Stephens Committee for their endless time and commitment to
making this park a beautiful addition to Notre Dame.

Congratulations
Coach D’Aloisio!!
Before the beginning of
each football season Coach
D’Aloisio is not always
optimistic. This past season
was no exception especially
after losing the first two
games. It was a cause for
concern and an opportunity
to go back to the drawing
board. Coach D’Aloisio
and his staff have a way of
figuring out how to use the talent on the team and
work miracles. The team went on to win the next
5 out of 6 games finishing with a 6 and 3 record.
The win against Candor gave Coach D his 200th
win which clinched the Division Title – a GREAT
ACHIEVEMENT! Thanks Coach D for all your
hard work.
Another Kudo for Coach D’Aloisio included his
1990 team being selected by WENY for special
honors as the State Champion Crusaders Making
the All Time Greatest Team List! (To see a video of

Coach Weber!!
This past year, Coach Steve Weber and his ladies
softball and soccer teams were recognized for
their outstanding accomplishments throughout
the state. In the spring,
his undefeated Crusader
Softball Team ran the table
for an unprecedented 23-0
record and a New York
State Championship. This
achievement earned Coach
Weber the NYS Class “C”
Coach of the Year.
During the fall season, his
soccer team brought more accolades to Notre
Dame High School and its sports program. In
achieving an upset victory over Lansing, the girls›
soccer team went on to win the Section IV Class
C Title. In doing so, Coach Weber attained his
landmark 300th victory, establishing him as one of
the premiere coaches in our area.

resides at the Mercy Center in
Rochester, NY. Sister Kathleen works
in the Archives part time and is very
involved in the Center’s activities.

Yearbooks of Elmira Catholic
High School state that Robert
Sullivan “left his class to go to St.
Andrew’s Seminary but he always
remained with us in spirit”. Bob
died peacefully in Rome, NY on
April 27, 2010 after bravely enduring
an extended illness.He will be
remembered for his public speaking
skills especially in “Robert Sullivan, a
Junior, was awarded first place in the
American Legion Oratorical Contest”
and second place in the County
Oratorical Contest. After retiring
from the Rome DDSO, where he
spent his career helping people with
developmental disabilities, “Sully”,
as he was known to all of his friends,
went on to actively participate
in his parish Charismatic Prayer
Group, and was a frequent speaker
on the topic of Discipleship in
Syracuse, Rome and Utica churches.
Our sympathy goes out to all Bob’s
family.A book of all his reflections
is being published by his daughter,
Therese Sullivan Caccavale, under
the title Embrace My Heart.

Connie Gawronski Bergh was
awarded the Mildred Parfitt
Award for nearly three decades of
volunteering at various agencies
including the Samaritan Center,
RSVP and St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Mary Watts Wendrick and Mel
moved into a retirement community
for independent and/or assisted
living in November 2009. After Mel
passed away in July 2010, Mary
decided to remain in her lovely small
home on the grounds and she’s
loving it.

Mary Lou Raplee Amole who
served as a nurse during the
Vietnam War donated one of her
uniforms and various photographs
to the Vietnam Vets of America.
Mary Lou is contributing to a
collection shown at the Vietnam War
Museum in Elmira. The Bronze Star
recipient is the only female member
of VVA Chapter 436 in Phoenixville,
PA.
Mike Tuccinardi and his wife
think they have “died and gone to
heaven” at their home in Rutherford
County, NC.

Bernie Kole would like to

Janet’s son met his bride, Jeep,

Kathleen Kessing, who was caregiver
to both her parents, relocated to
Arizona following her parents’
passing. Kathleen has moved back to
the Pennsylvania area after one year in
Green Valley, Arizona.
Rita (Bonning’69) Murphy earned
her certificate as a Certified
Developmental Disabilities Nurse.
Rita has mourned the loss of both her
mother and father but is celebrating
her 37th wedding anniversary and her
grandchildren Aidan and Bronte.

Thomas Kelly has been named vice
president of operations for University
of Louisville Physicians, the largest
multi-specialty physician practice
in Louisville. Thomas earned his
Bachelor’s degree in biology from
The Citadel in Charleston, SC and
a master’s degree in healthcare
administration from Duke University
in Durham, NC.

Scott P. Pautz was recognized in the
spring for his pro bono legal services.
The Chemung County Bar Association
honored Scott at Elmira College’s
Hamilton Hall.

John J. Vargo, MD, MPH was recently
appointed Chairman, Department of
Gastroenterology and Hepatology
of the Cleveland Clinic’s Digestive
Disease Institute in Cleveland, Ohio.
He was also appointed Vice Chairman
of the Institute and elected secretary
of the Medical Staff. John and his wife

moved and expanded the Healthcare

high school playing varsity football,
wrestling and baseball.

Rene Lynch Miller has been hired as
a Supervisor at Corning Museum of
Glass. Rene and Les, her husband, are
empty nestors.

Kathy Zuniga-Miller resides in
Fairport and is thankful for the calls
and cards at the time of her mother’s
passing in February.

Christina Patros Perry is currently
residing in Fairfax, Virginia after
leaving Elmira 27 years ago.

Elmira, was recently named one of
America’s top financial advisors
in 2011. Michael’s profile will be

stepped away from his career in

his own practice: Q Entertainment

Strategies. Quinton tells us that he is
not just a lawyer, “I am an educator
seeking to teach, to protect, and
hopefully, to inspire those around me
to follow their own dreams.”
1997 Thomasine Gilbert and her husband
Matthew Gilbert welcomed the birth
of their third child, Everett Michael
Gilbert on March 24, 2011. Baby
Everett is a big brother to sisters,
Roslyn and Anastasia.
Amy (Rosh’97) Whyte was recently
recognized for 10 years of service by
her company, Newell Rubbermaid.
She is currently the National Account
Manager for Newell’s technology
products, calling on Office Depot

Kelly Carolin married James
Marsicano on October 10, 2010 at
Epiphany Church in Sayre, PA. Kelly
graduated with a B.A. in English from
LeMoyne College and is currently a
Producer at NY1 News in New York
City. James is a graduate from the
University of Scranton with a B.A. in
Communication and is currently a
Technical Director at NY1 News. Kelly
and James reside in Cliffside Park, NJ.

Jillian Christine Williams married
Patrick Daniel Manuel’02, on
August 13, 2011. Patrick is a sales
representative for United Dividers in
Elmira. Patrick and Jillian reside in
East Rochester, New York.
Amy Woodworth became engaged
to Michael Vence and will celebrate
their marriage in May 2012. Amy is
currently a Special Education teacher
in Rochester, NY and resides in
Pittsford.

Maria Strzepek married Shane
Clark in May 2008. Maria and Shane
welcomed daughter MacKenzie
Lynn on March 31, 2010. Maria
graduated from the Art Institute
of Pittsburgh with a BA in Interior
Design in December 2004, followed
by a Master’s Degree in Elementary
Education from Mansfield University
in Elementary Education.

Patrick Michael Clearwater married
Melody Julia Taylor in September, 2011
at the Corning Country Club. Patrick
is employed by the Office of Children
and Family Services
Andrew Cloke announced his
engagement to Amber Wheeler of
Gillett, PA during the spring of 2011.
Andrew & Amber married in October,
2011. Andrew is currently employed
by the U.S. Army as a Military Police
Officer.
Molly Huddle won the women’s 5,000
meter run in 15 minutes, 10.01 seconds
at the USA Outdoor Track and Field
Championships at Hayward Field in
Eugene, Oregon in June. Following
competitions in Paris and Stockholm,
Molly returned to Providence, RI to
train for the World Championships
held August 27-September 4 in
Daegu, South Korea. Molly is the only
American woman to qualify for the
world meet in the 5,000. Her goal for
next year is to qualify for the 2012
Olympics in London.
Patrick Daniel Manuel married Jillian
Christine Williams’00, on August 13,
2011. Patrick is a sales representative
for United Dividers in Elmira. Patrick
and Jillian reside in East Rochester,
New York.

Valerie Strzepek graduated from

Angela Winebold, a graduate of
Nazareth College, married Joseph
Bader, a RIT graduate from Utica,
in September 2009 and they are
expecting their first child in April
2012. Angela and Joe reside in
Canandaigua.
2004
Patrick S. Buckley, a third year
medical student at Jefferson Medical
College in Philadelphia, received two
awards this past March.
Patrick was selected into Jefferson’s
Alpha Omega Alpha, the honor
medical society. He was in the top
quartile of his class of 250 students
and demonstrated leadership among
his peers, professionalism and a
firm sense of ethics, promise for
future success in medicine and a
commitment to service in the school
and community.
Patrick was also selected for the
Gold Humanism Honor Society
at Jefferson Medical College. The
award highlights the importance
of empathy, altruism, respect,
integrity, compassion and trust when
interacting with others, and forming
healing relationships with patients
and others in the field of medicine.
Pat returns to Jefferson in September
for a final month at Rothman
Institute in Orthopaedic Surgery. He
will complete his 4th year courses
and is scheduled to graduate in May
2012.
Patrick J. Marczyk has completed the
Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit
course with Nuclear Power Training
Unit course in Ballston Spa, NY.
2005
Jack Dominic Diliberto graduated
from Niagara University in 2010. Jack is working with the Marion
County Alternative Courts in
Indianapolis as a Case Manager.
Sarah Norton graduated in 2009 with
a Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries and
Wildlife Science from Paul Smith’s
College. She has worked at various
organizations focusing on raptor

research. She has been employed
by the Peregrine Fund raising and
releasing endangered Aplomado
Falcons into the wild. She has also
worked for raptor View Research
Institute in Montana conducting
fall raptor migration counts in the
Rockies. This year Sarah worked for
the University of Florida surveying
for endangered Snail Kites in
airboats from the Kissimmee chain
of lakes down to the Everglades.
Sarah returns to Montana this fall to
continue migration counts and assist
in raptor trapping and banding,
especially Golden Eagles.
Laura Spaulding is a 3rd year
medical student at Georgetown
and a 2nd Lieutenant in the US
Army. Laura became engaged in
September, 2011.
2006
Angela Bahlatzis has earned
her master’s degree from King’s
College and has received her second
lieutenant commission from the
U.S. Army. Angela was the first
person to complete both the King’s
physician assistant studies and the
Army ROTC programs. She was
named a Distinguished Military
Graduate, which means she ranks in
the top 10 percent of all Army ROTC
cadets across the nation.
Maxwell Baker Wallace and
Danielle Marie Schenone (2008)
announced their engagement.
Following a BS in Biology from St.
Bonaventure University, Danielle’s
plan is to attend the SUNY Upstate
College of Medicine. Max earned
his BA degree in Psychology from
St. Bonaventure University in
2010 and is currently pursuing a
doctorate in Clinical Psychology.

Dan McCahill is a senior accounting
major at the State University of
New York at Oneonta and has been
awarded a scholarship from the
NYS Society of Certified Public
Accountants’ Foundation for
Accounting Education. Dan has
also been selected by the Division of
Economics and Business at Oneonta
as the recipient of an academic
scholarship for 2011-2012. He
has also been invited to become a
member of the Student Advisory
Council in the Division of Economics
and Business.
Morgan Snyder graduated from
Western Carolina University with a
B.S. in Elementary Education while
maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Morgan is
currently studying at UNC Chapel
Hill, obtaining a Master’s Degree in
School Counseling.

The Bucknell Bisons consider
Sophomore Michael Huffner a
key member of the team’s lacrosse
defense. Michael is playing lacrosse
at the NCAA Division 1 level and
went on to be named First-team AllPatriot League.
Bill Spaulding is the Sports
Director for a Syracuse radio station
broadcasting the Syracuse University
LaCrosse, football and basketball
games. Bill’s sister, Mary Claire is
a sophomore at Notre Dame High
School working on the school play
and school softball team.
As a member of Harvard University’s
track and field team, Olivia Weeks
won events in long jump and triple
jump and was a member of the
Crimson’s winning 400 relay team.
Olivia’s team celebrated a 113-59
victory over Yale in April.

The Annual Phonathon was recently
held at Notre Dame High School.
Alumni, current students along with
faculty and staff made phone calls to
alumni, alumni parents, friends and
current parents for their pledge to the
Annual Fund. We are still noticing
that many land-line phones have
been disconnected and replaced with
cell phones. We are hoping that you
will provide us with your cell phone
number so that you can be reached by
your classmates for reunions and other
such gatherings. We are also asking

Casino Royale 2011
A special thank you

On Saturday, November 5th, the 3rd
Annual Casino Royale was held at the
Corning Country Club. The evening
began at 6PM with the opening of
the Casino Tables, Silent Auction and
Chinese Auction along with food and
drinks. At 7PM there was a Ball Drop on
the deck overlooking the 18th green with
winners claiming Closest to the pin with
a 50/50 prize. At 8:30 the Live Auction
began with the very charismatic MC –
Mr. Rick Pirrozolo (always a great time
to be around him). This year’s auction/
raffle items included exciting trips to
Aruba, Ormand Beach, Florida and a
2-night stay at the Maxa’s luxury condo
in Whiteface Club Resort on the shores
of Lake Placid. Other items included
an iPad, a cheerleader birthday party,
a Varsity Portrait Package, a chance for
“Premier” ND Graduation Seats, a night
of Cornell Hockey, Syracuse Football
Tickets or the lucky winner of the Instant
Wine Cellar valued at $2,800. There
were many items available to make a
silent bid on or to participate in the live
auction. Mark your calendar for next
year so you don’t miss out. It truly is a
great time with great people, great food
and great drink.

At a recent University of Notre Dame Football
Game in South Bend, Indiana, Marty & Suzie
Curran, current and alumni parents of Notre
Dame High School, met up with long-time friends,
Mike’76 & Gigi (Lynch’77) Frailey. The Curran’s
and Frailey’s daughters are students at the
University of Notre Dame. Accompanying Mike &
Gigi was Mike’s brother, Dan Frailey’75. Tom’77
and Maria Landy travelled with the Curran’s and
Tom reminisced about Homecoming’77 when he
escorted Gigi, who was the Homecoming Queen.
