Marie Benitez, age 69, of Hammond, formerly of East Chicago,
passed away Sunday June 29,
2014. Marie is survived by her
loving husband of 44 years
Servando; sons Raul Benitez and
Arturo Benitez; grandchildren:
Brittney
Kowalski,
Miguel
Benitez, Savannah Benitez and
Audrina Benitez; great grandson
Bentley; brothers Paul (Mary
Lou) Prieto and Lupe (Juanita)
Prieto; many nieces, nephews
and cousins. Preceded in death
by her parents Daniel and Soledad; brothers: Felix, Ralph,
Manuel, Daniel and Matt.
Marie worked for the City of
East Chicago as a Crossing
Guard for 30 years until retirement. She loved to cook and her
favorite dish was Mexican rice.
Marie enjoyed shopping and
would often visit Carson's and
JC Penney. She was a loving
wife, a caring mother and especially cherished her grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held on
Thursday July 3, 2014 at 10:00

Bosco Catholic Church 7113 Columbia Ave with Fr. Richard
Orlinski officiating. Marie will
lie in state at the church from
9:30 AM until time of service.

MUNSTER, IN
Robert Turman was a devoted husband, father
and grandfather, said his daughter, Agnes Isailovich.
“I always knew Dad had our backs. We could
venture out and try anything because Mom and Dad
were always behind us,” she said. “When things did
not go well, we could turn back to them for the love
and support that was always there.”
Robert Turman, 87, of Crown Point, died June
4. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maureen
Turman, as well as six children, 10 grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.
During World War II, he served in the Army’s
Finance Corps under Gen. Douglas McArthur.
While in the Philippines, he became disabled when
his vehicle drove over a land mine. He suffered significant hearing loss.
Turman attended the Missouri School of Mines
on the GI Bill, and graduated with a degree in

Virginia Mary Boehlke, 92, of
Wanatah passed away Saturday,
June 28, 2014. She was born
November 9, 1921 in Otis, IN to
Frank & Stella (Kuharski)
Tesmer and attended Morgan
Township School. Virginia was
a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the ladies of Sacred Heart, charter member of
Cardettes Club and the Bunco
Club in Wanatah, enjoyed crafting and showcasing her talents
at the Scarecrow Festival and
other craft shows in the area.
She loved her family and playing
euchre with them. We will all
miss her dominant personality!
On October 29, 1938 she married Cornelius "Neil" Boehlke
who preceded her in death in
1997. Survivors include their
children:

with funeral mass beginning at
12:00 noon, Fr. Jerry Schweitzer
officiating and burial following

at the church. Joseph was a man
of great kindness and integrity.
He had many talents and interests. He was truly loved and will
be greatly missed. He was a
member of St. Thomas More
Church and served at Port Ministries in Chicago for many
years. He also was a Secular
Franciscan and served with the
U.S. Army 1st Division Tank Destroyer Group as a radio operator. In lieu of flowers, memorial

Ministries or the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation.

Charles A. Thomas, Sr., age 89
of Hazelcrest, IL, formerly of
Lansing, passed away on Monday, June 30, 2014. He is survived by his six children:

A member of the Greatest Generation, Mr. Thomas honorably
served his country during WWII
in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a
civil engineer in steel production, was a Chicago Bears and
Cubs fan and a member of the
Knights
of
Columbus.

member of the Theta Xi fraternity.
He spent his career at U.S. Steel, rising through
the ranks of upper level management, retiring at
age 57. He then became “Mister Mom” as his wife
continued to work.
He took up woodworking and made beautiful
pieces of furniture, his family said.
Turman was born in St. Louis, Mo., and raised by
his grandmother. Despite having no father figure to
model himself after, he loved every minute he spent
with his family.
“Family was everything to Dad. He was never
happier than when he was building something
for one of us or had us gathered at the house for
our frequent and large family parties,” she said.
“Our dad was an engineer, a builder, a manager,
a solid Catholic, a husband, a father and a papa.
His life ended surrounded by the large, loving
family he helped nurture, support and create.
We go on in our life knowing we loved (him) and
he loved us.”

Hammond, IN passed away
Thursday, June 19, 2014. She is
survived by her son, Nicholas
(Pam) Demps of Hammond; one

Christine was a lifelong Hammond resident. She was an employee of American Comsource,
and a former employee of the
Hammond Health Department.
Christine was a graduate of

School class of 1989.

Jack Papa, 84, of Valparaiso
passed away on Sunday, June
29, 2014 at Portage Regional
Hospital. He was born on September 30, 1929 in Memphis,
TN to the late, Sam & Rose
Papa. Jack retired from NIPSCO
as a foreman in 1989 with 41
years on employment and was a
veteran of the U.S. Air Force
serving in Korea.
In 1953, Jack married Roxie Lee
Wilson who preceded him in
death in 2008. He is survived his
son, Dennis of Washington
State; daughter, Donna (Randy)
Clowers of Portage; 2 grandsons; 1 great granddaughter;
brother, Sam (Pat) Papa of Lansing IL; sister, Anna (Leon) of
Salisbury, MO; and aunts,
nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was also preceded in death
by his sister, Josephine (late
Hugh) Markward; brother, Joseph (Joanna) Papa; and sister,
Rose Marie Papa.

Legacy Foundation, the Portage
High School Class of 1949 and
his
prizewinning

Studebaker Landcruiser. Worshiped faithfully at Indiana University Football and Basketball
venues (Class of 1953). IU,
where he will forever be remembered for participating in
the first "Little 500 Race." There
are so many fun things to do in
life, was his creed. Celebration
of life to be held at a later date.
