Engagement Announced
Capt. Philip W. Blow, 67, formerly of Coudersport, died Feb. 12, 2012, at the Wilmington
VA Serenity Hospice in Delaware. He was born
March 7, 1944, in Coudersport, the son of Frank
E. and Gertrude R. (Scoville) Blow of Andrews
Settlement. A 1962 graduate of Coudersport
High School, he earned a civil engineering degree from Drexel and served with distinction
with the Army Corps of Engineers in Vietnam
during 1970-71. He was later employed by the
Federal Highway Administration. He was married to the former Cassandra Allen, who predeceased him. Among survivors are his wife,
the former Marilyn Jane McClure; and a son,
Trevor A. Blow and wife Laurel of Washington, D.C. Burial will be in Arlington National
Cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Kio of Austin are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Ashley Lynn
Kio, to Zachary Dean Cowburn, son of Tamara Setzer of
Coudersport and Dean Cowburn of Bellefonte.
A graduate of Pennsylvania College of Technology,
Ms. Kio is a Registered Nurse at Charles Cole Memorial
Hospital.
Mr. Cowburn is a graduate of Coudersport High School
and is employed at Swank Companies.
The couple is planning a Sept. 29 2012 wedding.
Unique Bible study starts
First United Methodist Church of Emporium this weekend launches a Bible reading program geared toward all
ages.
“The Story” explains the Bible in terms that are easily
understandable. It’s a book of selections from the Bible, arranged chronologically, that reads like a novel.
The program will begin on Sunday during the 8:15 am
and 10:45 am worship services at the First United Methodist Church, and 1:15 pm at the Moore Hill Church. The
program will also be offered during the Sunday School
sessions each week at 9:30 am. For more information, call

Methodist worship times
Park United Methodist Church has adjusted its worship
service times.
Adult Sunday School will be held at 8:45 am with Cindi
Hardesty and Alan Acker leading. Worship service will be
at 10 am with Pastor Scott Ogden leading.
The church has also announced midweek services for
Lent, each Wednesday at 7 pm through March 28.
‘Circle of Fifths’ scholarship
High school students who
are planning to study music
at a college or conservatory
are welcome to apply for the
Robert Merten Circle of Fifths
Music Scholarship, which
provides as much as $1,000
toward their education.
Potter County students who
are in public or private schools,
or are home-schooled, along
with students at Port Allegany
are eligible to apply. High
school music teachers and
guidance counselors have applications.
Applicants will compete on
May 5 in Coudersport and be
judged on performance, aural
skills, theory, dedication, and
classical and jazz appreciation.

below safe levels. Community
Blood Bank is the only supplier of blood to Charles Cole
Memorial Hospital and other
area medical facilities. A pint
of blood can help as many as
three surgical patients, cancer
victims and others in need.
Cash Bash fundraiser March 3
VFW Post 6221 Auxiliary in
Emporium continues its support of the Big Flag Memorial
on the town’s west end with
a fundraising Cash Bash on Saturday (today) from 2-4 pm at
the Vets Club on Third Street.

the building of a lecturn to be

Maxine M. Austin, 82, of Shinglehouse, died
Feb. 26, 2012, at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was a 1948 graduate of Shinglehouse High School and a charter
member of the Bell Run Union Church, where
she taught Sunday school for many years.
Among survivors is a brother, Harold “Perry”
Austin and wife Ellen of Shinglehouse. Burial
will be in the Bell Run Cemetery. Memorials
may be made to Bell Run Community Club or

Louise Summerson Conway
Louise Summerson Conway, 90, formerly of
Emporium, died Feb. 24, 2012, at Port Charlotte, Fla., where she had resided for the past
31 years. She was born Aug. 15, 1921, in Emporium, a daughter of Clara Dodge and George
Summerson. She and her husband, Jack Conway, who died in 2007, lived in Fairfield, Ct.,
before moving to Florida. Burial will be in
Newton Cemetery. Barnett Funeral Home is in
charge of local arrangements. Memorials may
be made to Florida United Methodist Children’s
Home in Enterprise, Fla., or St. Jude Children’s
Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Ruth G. Laughlin
Ruth G. Laughlin, 102, formerly of West Second Street
in Emporium, died at Guy &
Mary Felt Manor on Feb. 29,
2012.
She was born Jan. 7, 1910 in
Kersey, a daughter of Charles
and Elizabeth Eckert Emmert. She was married to Earl
Laughlin, who died in 1965.
Mrs. Laughlin graduated
from Kersey High School.
She retired from Sylvania,
where she worked for many years. She was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Emporium.
She resided a few years at the Grove House before
moving to Felt Manor.
Surviving are a son, James Laughlin and his
wife Mary of Emporium; a daughter, Joan, (Mrs.
Eugene) Kinley, Emporium; seven grandchildren;
five great-grandchildren, and a sister, Adeline
Knight, St. Marys.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband, two sisters, Lillian Koch and Mary Hannibal; four brothers, Tom, Carl, Leo and Joe Emmert.
Burial will be in the St. Mark Catholic Cemetery.

St., or Grove House, 436 Old West Creek Rd., both

Senior Center celebration
Emporium Senior Center will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a
special event that’s open to the public.
There will be food, door prizes and fun starting at 1 pm on
March 17 during an open house at the center. All who attend are
encouraged to wear green. A highlight will be the “open mic” sessions in which local musicians are welcome to participate.

Austin Historical Society dinner

Society will hold its annual
dinner auction fundraiser on
Wednesday, March 14, at the
American Legion Post 192 in
Coudersport.
Cost remains at $20 per person and includes dinner (choice
of stuffed chicken breast or
roast beef) and a door prize.
There will be an auction,
raffle and a silent auction. A
limited number of tickets are

Esther M. Hudson, 92, of Emporium, died
Feb. 24, 2012, in Elk Haven Nursing Home,
St. Marys. Born Aug. 26, 1919, in Emporium,
she was the daughter of Otto and Lucy Burfield Edelman. On Jan. 16, 1946, she married C.
Wilson Hudson, who died Sept. 8, 2010. A lifelong resident of Emporium, she attended local
schools and Sisters of Charity Nursing School.
During World War II, she worked at Sylvania
Electric and later the Rydesky-Malizia Law Offices. Mrs. Hudson was an active member of St.
Mark Catholic Chuch and the Emporium Country Club. Survivors include two sons, Craig
W. (Carol) Hudson of Emporium and Jeffrey
J. (Pam) Hudson of Okeechobee, Fla. Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements. Interment was in St. Mark Cemetery, Emporium.
Leslie J. Haas
Leslie J. Haas, 64, of Ridgway, died in Ridgway Township on Feb. 24, 2012. Mr. Haas held
a forestry degree from Paul Smith College. He
served with the U.S. Army from 1968-71 as a
military policeman. He moved to Elk County in
March 1984 to work as a waterways conservation officer for the Fish and Boat Commission.
He was active in many sportsmen’s organizations. Among survivors is is wife of 42 years,
the former Janet Hutchens; two sons, Christopher (Delores) Haas of Sinnemahoning and
Seth (Alycia) Haas of Rock Hill, S.C.; a daughter: Rebecca (Mrs. George) Peters of Emporium; five grandchildren; and a brother: Nelson
(Rose) Haas of Emporium. A life celebration
will be held at the Alliance Church, Emporium,
at noon on Saturday (today). Military honors
will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail. The family will receive friends at
church one hour prior to the service. Memorials
may be made to Down County Baptist Church,
Driftwood; Alliance Church Parsonage, Emporium, or St. Marys Sportsmen’s Club for Youth
Field Day. Barnett Funeral Home is in charge
of arrangements.
E. Regina Nordberg
E. Regina Nordberg, 84, formerly of Emporium, died Feb. 26, 2012, at Christ the King
Manor, DuBois. She was born Oct. 13, 1927,
in Emporium, a daughter of Gerald and Elsie
Skillman Horning. On Dec. 27, 1948, in Emporium, she married the late Herman Nordberg,
who predeceased her. She was a graduate of Emporium High School and Buffalo (N.Y.) Children’s Hospital School of Nursing. She served
for many years as a nursing supervisor for Guy
and Mary Felt Manor. She was an active Sunday School, Bible School and 4-H teacher and
was actively involved with the Alliance Church
in Emporium. A memorial service will be held
at the Alliance Church on Tuesday, March 6, at
11:30 am. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Driftwood. Memorials may be made to the
Alliance Church Mission Fund. Barnett Funeral

Marie C. Pellam
Marie C. Pellam, 93, of Guy & Mary Felt
Manor, Emporium, formerly of Rich Valley
Rd., died at Elk Regional Health Center, St.
Marys on Wednesday (Feb. 29, 2012).
She was born November 24, 1918 in Emporium, a daughter of the late Raymond M. and
Mary Hout Housler. She married the late Barnard L. Pellam, Sr. She had been a member of
the Order of Eastern Star, Emporium Chapter
#101 where she had served as a Worth Past
Matron. She had worked at the former Market Basket for several years and, years ago,
had worked at Sylvania. Visitation will be at
the Barnett Funeral Home on Sunday from 2-4
and 6-8 pm. Funeral Service will be held at the
funeral home on Monday, (March 5) at 11 am.
