Marcus Elliott Reno, 63, of
St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of
Burlington, died Friday, Oct. 25,
2013, at his home following a battle with congestive heart failure
and associated illnesses.
Born May 20, 1950, in
Ottumwa, he was the son of Max
Eugene and Frances Hartzler
Reno. On Aug. 21, 1970, he married Sharon Holtkamp, and they
later divorced.
Mr. Reno worked as a probation officer for the Eighth
Judicial District in Burlington,
then worked as a quality assurance professional for Mason
Hanger, Silas Mason Co. at the
Iowa Army Ammunition Plant
in Middletown. He worked for
Olin Ordnance, which became
General Dynamics-OTS, in St.
Petersburg and worked as quality manager of Bulova Technologies Ordnance Systems in Mayo,
Fla.
He graduated from Harmony
High School in Farmington in
1968 and University of Iowa College of Business Administration
in 1979.
He was a member, lead singer
and guitar player of the southeast Iowa rock and roll band, The
Wanderers, for two decades.
He enjoyed golf, music, going
to Tampa Bay Rays baseball
games, watching the St. Louis
Cardinals, Iowa Hawkeyes and
Chicago Bears.
Survivors include two brothers, Stephen Reno and William
Reno, and nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by
his parents and one sister.
The celebration of life service
for Mr. Reno will be at a later
date. Burial will be in Bonaparte
Cemetery.
Memorials have been established for the Bonaparte Cemetery Association and hospice.

died Monday,
Oct. 28, 2013, at
Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.
Born Sept.
6, 1945, in
Keokuk,
he
was the son of
Oscar “Jake”
and
Essie
Hackard Paris.
He
married
Shirley Mae Freetly. She preceded
him in death.
Mr. Paris worked at Hinkles,
Oglvy’s and ADM in Keokuk. He
retired from ADM in 1994 after 25
years of service. He served overseas in the Navy during the Vietnam War.
He formerly was a member of
the Nazarene church in Keokuk.
He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed fishing and
gardening. He played Santa Claus
for many years in the area and
at the mall in Keokuk. He was a
patient man who loved spending
time with his family.
Survivors include two children,
Tonya “Toni” Davis of Warsaw and
David Paris of East Moline, Ill.; 10
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one
son, one brother, one sister and his
stepfather.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8
p.m. today at Printy Funeral Home
in Carthage, Ill.
The funeral for Mr. Paris will
be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Community of Christ Church in Keokuk.
Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.
Memorials may be directed to

a.m. Thursday,
Oct. 31, 2013, at

Born Aug.
17, 1916, in Fort
Madison, she
was the daughter of Harry and Margaret Mowbray Wilken. On Feb. 3,
1940, she married Francis “Dutch”
Anderson in Fort Madison. He died
Dec. 15, 1977.
Mrs. Anderson worked production at Sheaffer Pen. She was a
member of Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Fort Madison and loved
traveling the world.
Survivors include one son, Jon
Anderson of Davenport.
Besides her husband, she was
preceded in death by her parents
and two sisters.
The memorial Mass for Mrs.
Anderson will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, with
the Rev. Mark P. Spring as celebrant.
Burial will follow in Soldiers’ Circle,
Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison.
Her body has been cremated.
A memorial has been established for Sacred Heart Church.

Aledo, Ill., formerly of Burlington,
died at 6:45 a.m. Thursday, Oct.
31, 2013, at Aledo Health Care.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. — An Oregon highway engineer whose 1970
decision to use a half-ton of dynamite to blast away a beached dead
whale became an Internet sensation has died. George Thomas
Thornton was 84.
The Oregon Department of
Transportation said Thornton was
a highly respected engineer who
worked for the agency for 37 years.
In November 1970, he got the
call to remove a 45-foot-long sperm
whale that washed up near Florence. He decided to use dynamite
to disintegrate the animal. The
blast rained down pieces of whale
that covered spectators and flattened the roof of a car.

died Wednesday, Oct. 30,
2013, at River
Hills Village in
Keokuk.
Born April
19, 1925, in
Keokuk,
he
was the son
of John and
Myrna Stahl
Williams. On
March 23, 1946, he married June
Ruby Edith Batterby in Keokuk,
and she died Nov. 21, 2002.
Mr. Williams worked nearly 30
years as a foreman for Hubinger
Co. and was a member of the company’s management club.
He graduated from Keokuk
Senior High in 1943 and served
in the Army Air Corps during
World War II, based in Norwich,
England. His unit was awarded a
commendation for distinguished
service.
He played football for one year
at Iowa Wesleyan College and for
a semi-pro team. He was a standout fast pitch softball player and

recorded seven holes in one.
He and his wife enjoyed their
membership and Friday evening
dining at Keokuk Yacht Club,
and he was a lifelong member of
Keokuk Elk’s Club and American
Legion. He was proud of his children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
Survivors include one son,
Colin Williams of Marion; one
daughter, Colette Boltz of Loveland, Colo.; three grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and
one brother.
The funeral for Mr. Williams
will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at
Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk,
with the Rev. Larry Snyder officiating, and family will receive
friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Iowa, she was the daughter of
Robert Harold and Iva Jean
Meta Marie Kuhse Coobs. She
married David R Courtney in
1972. They divorced in 2001.
Though she never remarried,
she found a special friend in
Gordon Sherwood.
Ms. Courtney was primarily a homemaker and stay at
home mom; however, she also
assisted her husband’s dental
practice as the bookkeeper for
many years and served as a
part-time hygienist.
Ms. Courtney always had a
love for gardening, baking and
photography. Her favorite was
to try new and inventive cookie
recipes and taking snapshots of
her family.
Survivors include her daughters, Sarah (Dan) Santoro of
Arlington, Virginia and Rachel
(Jeff) Lamb of Dubuque; four
grandchildren, Noah and Isla
Santoro and Eloise and Calvin
Lamb; one brother, Alan (Sonya) Coobs of Clive; one sister,
Carole (Ron) Pinney of Winfield;
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her parents.
The funeral service for Ms.
Courtney will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 2nd in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. David
Mixon will officiate. Interment
will be in Fairview Cemetery, rural Fort Madison. The family will

He graduated from Morning
Sun High School and served
in the US Navy during WW II.
He was an electrician with the
IBEW #13 of Burlington. He was
a member of the IBEW #13, the
Masonic Lodge #226 of Mediapolis, and the VFW Glenn
Allen Post 5166 of Wapello. He
had served on the Des Moines
County Conservation Board
and the Mediapolis City Council. He was of the Methodist
faith.
Alfred enjoyed woodworking,
being outdoors, and his pets.
He was very devoted to his family.
His family includes his wife,
Mary Ellen; two daughters,
Carolyn Fromm & Steven Patterson of West Burlington and
Christine & Alan Sergeant of
Longmont, Colorado; a granddaughter, Kathy & Chad Bonser; and two great-grandsons,
Andrew and Gage Bonser. He
was preceded in death by his
parents and a grandson, Robert
Fromm.
The funeral ceremony for Alfred Jackson will be held at 2:00
p.m. on Monday, November 4,
