We feel this new system will allow us to better serve the members and meet new regulations. The system requires a late fee to be calculated on the amount owed versus a flat fee as we have done in the past. Starting in February late charges will be imposed on any balance remaining unpaid after 30 days computed at 1.5% per month (18% per year). If you have not already done so we offer EFT so that your payment will automatically be made to help avoid late fees. Any questions about your balance or if you wish to have your account paid automatically by EFT please contact our accounting office. Thank you. Group Exercise welcomes you to 2014! Now is a great time to try a new class and/or re-visit other classes. We offer a variety of classes from Cardio to Yoga to Pilates to Qigong. If water is your love try our Aqua Combo classes and Masters swim teams. All ages are welcomed. GROUP EXERCISE Wall PLank Stand in front of a wall at arm’s length. Reach forward from your shoulders and plant your palms on the wall, fingers wide, middle fingers pointing straight at the ceiling. Firm your fingers into the wall and draw your navel back as you lengthen the tailbone towards the floor. Lift your ribs from the pelvis. You want to work with a natural lower back curve but an active belly. Keep length in your spine as you begin to walk the legs back, folding at the waist, and walking your hands down the wall. Eventually you’ll come to an L-shape as seen here. If you can’t get there today without feeling pain or rounding in the lower back, bend your knees and maintain the proper spinal alignment. As you lift the navel and lower ribs into the body, reach long through the tailbone and legs into the floor while reaching the spine, arms and head towards the wall. Repeat for 10-20 breaths. Move to another pose after a few breaths. If done properly, this tried-and-true asana can be excellent for spinal traction and back health. YEAR-ROUND SWIM TEAM WINTER 2014 There has never been a better time for youth swimming at LGSRC than right now! Our revamped year-round swim team, Los Gatos Swim Club, is focused on reaching new club goals, and helping swimmers reach their goals. We’ve improved our practices to include more endurance work, more technical work, more competitive training, and of course improved fun and team building! We encourage all swimmers to try our program, or join us at one of our many team-building activities. Los Gatos Swim Club is excited and motivated to become one of the top competitive swimming programs in Pacific Swimming. It’s not a traditional, specialized training program like doing isolated weight training for a certain muscle or aerobics, its a very tough workout. Here’s what you should know before you get started. What is CrossFit? CrossFit Advantages CrossFit combines strength training, explosive plyometrics, speed training, Olympic- and power-style weight lifting, kettle bells, body weight exercises, gymnastics, and endurance exercise. By doing this, CrossFit targets what it calls the major components of physical fitness: cardiorespiratory fitness, stamina, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination, and accuracy. CrossFit workouts are highly intense and do not take a long time to complete. You can get a great workout in a short period of time. Athletes and ex-athletes will enjoy the challenges of each WOD, as they are similar to sports conditioning. Training the CrossFit way requires you to work out 3 to 5 days per week. The workouts are highly intense and short, taking about 5 to 15 minutes to complete. CrossFit workouts typically combine explosive exercises done in a circuit format: One exercise follows right after the next, with very little rest in between. The main CrossFit exercises involve the whole body and include pushing, pulling, running, rowing, and squatting. The CrossFit WOD CrossFit LGSRC posts a Workout of the Day (WOD) on its web site. Some of the WOD are specially named after women or military heroes. The WOD changes each day and there are a lot of them. And they can be quite demanding. CrossFit LGSRC is not your typical fitness gym. You will not see the endless supply of cardio equipment or resistance machines, and members don’t perform their own personal routines. Instead, it’s a warehouse-like facility where the exercise equipment consists of a bunch of bumperplated Olympic weights, plyometric boxes, medicine balls, dumbbells, and kettlebells. Pull-up bars, climbing ropes, gymnastics rings hang from the pull up rig. The only cardio equipment you’ll see are rowing machines. If you want to run, hit the road of the surrounding area. The workouts are completed in a group setting. Everyone does the same WOD and it’s a different WOD every day. There are a large number of WOD routines and they are always changing. This adds to the excitement of each CrossFit workout and decreases the risk of becoming bored. Marathoners, triathletes, cyclists, and long-distance swimmers should dedicate most of their training time on their sport’s specific needs. However, CrossFit is a good way endurance athletes can train with weights and not interfere with their main objectives, due to the short amount of time needed to complete each WOD. Also, there are alternative CrossFit programs dedicated to endurance sports, football, and gymnastics.CrossFit is a good way for mixing up the common exercise routine by providing variety. CrossFit Bottom Line Like most other exercise routines, CrossFit has advantages and concerns. The workouts are fast-paced, challenging, and constantly varied. If you are healthy and can endure grueling workouts, then give it a try. You will probably enjoy it, just like most “Crossfitters.” New CROSSFIT COACH - SARAH PIERCE Coming from a high school and college sports background, Sarah’s competitive nature fits in well with CrossFits perscription of intensity. Having spent years in the old “Globogym” routine of cardio and abs, Sarah found CrossFit in late 2007. Sarah has competed in CrossFit events since 2008 and has consistently placed in the top 10 female competitors in Northern California.
