Notes for Edmund Pendelton:
Taken in all he was the ablest man in debate I ever met" - Thomas Jefferson
In 1752, Robert Dinwiddie replaced the popular William Gooch as the governor of Virginia. That year,
the people of Caroline elected Edmund Pendleton to the House of Burgesses. Already serving as a
magistrate, Pendleton replaced the wealthy, Cambridge educated John Baylor of Newmarket Plantation.
Edmund was a lawyer of modest means who had received his education in the local clerk's office He
immediately became a leader in the House Of Burgesses.
Although an arch-conservative, he was able to walk a middle line between the wealthy planters and the
common farmers and merchants. His policies were always those of sound economics and conciliation.
However, as the years of the Revolution dawned he would prove himself to be a rebel in good standing.
In 1753, Governor Dinwiddie insisted he be paid in Spanish gold for affixing his seal to land patents.
Pendleton demanded the governor give up this fee and sent Peyton Randolph to London to the Board of
Trade to complain about Dinwiddie's actions. He locked horns with the governor again when it was
suggested Virginia troops be used for the defense of Ft. Cumberland against the French in Maryland.
Pendleton wrote and pushed to passage a bill which reorganized the Virginia militia. This bill put into
place a hardened group of native-born troops who defended Virginia in the bloodiest days of the French
and Indian War. Later, it would form the core of the force which Virginia would send to the Continental
Army during the Revolutionary War.
In time, Pendleton's personal reputation and skill as a lawyer grew and his services were in great
demand. After the royal governor dissolved the House of Burgesses in 1773, they returned to
Williamsburg and convened themselves independently. This convention passed resolutions protesting
taxation without proper representation, and other outrages by the crown. They then elected members to
represent Virginia in a congress to be held in Philadelphia. Edmund Pendleton, along with Patrick
Henry and George Washington were among those elected.
The three met at Mt. Vernon and went north to Philadelphia together. Pendleton and Henry were old
enemies, one the leaders of the conservatives and the other the head of the radicals. The tyrannical
policies of George III united the two in a common cause. They would never however, really see eye to
eye. Pendleton always feared open defiance to the crown would lead to bloodshed. He would favor
conciliatory policies until the eve of the Revolution. The convention they attended would become known
as the First Continental Congress.
The convention agreed to boycott all trade with Britain and formu lated plans for all the colonies to
muster a common defense. It called for the setting up of "Committees of Safety" in each county. These
commit tees would be elected by the people and would train men, buy arms and carry out the programs
which the congress would direct. In 1774, Caroline elected its first "Committee of Safety" with
Pendleton as the moderator. The following year, after the flight of the royal governor the House of
Burgesses organized a "Committee of Safety" for the entire colony of Virginia. Pendleton was elected its
chairman. This position was the acting chief of state for the colony of Virginia.
In 1776. Pendleton was elected president of the Virginia convention and later was elected the chair for
the House of Delegates which sat under the new constitution. The same year he would openly defy the
crown when a rider from Philadelphia to Wil liamsburg came through Caroline with the news of the
Declaration of Independence. Pendleton was at home on July It, 1776, recuperating from a fall from his
horse when the news arrived in Caroline.
Immediately, he called the magistrates together and renounced the crown of England. They then swore
the oath of allegiance required in the declaration, thus severing Caroline's ties with Great Britain
forever. As the news had not yet been formally announced in Virginia, Caroline became the first county
in Virginia to declare independence.
In 1779, Pendleton became head of the judiciary Department of Virginia, and he would later
collaborate with Thomas Jefferson to revise the laws ofVirginia. George Washington appointed him
Judge of the United States District Court of Virginia. He was the leader of the Federalist Party in
Virginia until his death in 1803.
Pendleton was buried at his home in Caroline, near File, known as Edmundsbury. In 1907, the remains
of Judge Edmund Pendleton, his two wives and infant were disinterred from his burial ground in the
presence of the Reverend Goodwin of Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg and his great-great neice
2
Charlotte Pendleton.
Also present was the undertaker of Bowling Green, Mr. Pegg. The remains were taken to Bruton Parish
Church and there reinterred. The end of the banquet table which once graced the dining room at
Edmunsbury is preserved in the D.A.R. Museum in Washington, D.C.
A historical marker, located 2.5 miles south of Bowling Green, marks the site of Edmundsbury.

Zachary (The President)12 Taylor, born November 24, 1784 in Montebello, Orange CO, VA; died July
09, 1850 in White House, Washington DC. He married Margaret Machall Smith June 21, 1810 in
Jefferson CO, KY; born September 21, 1788; died August 14, 1852.
Notes for Zachary (The President) Taylor:
Born into a family of planters in Virginia on November 24, 1784, Zachary Taylor spent his youth in the
frontier outpost of Louisville, Kentucky. For most of Zachary's childhood, his Louisville home was a
small cabin in the woods. As his family prospered, the cabin became a substantial brick house that
Zachary shared with his seven brothers and sisters. By 1800, Taylor's father owned 10,000 acres, town
lots in Louisville, and twenty-six slaves.
Although educated, Zachary was a poor student. His handwriting, spelling, and grammar were crude
and unrefined throughout his life. Even as a boy, he wanted a career in the military; for a planter's son,
it was a respectable alternative to law and the ministry.
"Zachary Taylor's First Lesson in the Art of War" – engraving of young Zachary Taylor talking to a
mountain man – from illustrated biography of Zachary Taylor.
Taylor received his first commission as an officer in 1808 and was immediately assigned to command
the garrison at Fort Pickering, located in modern-day Memphis. From that moment until his election as
President, Taylor was in the military, stationed at a succession of frontier outposts.
In 1810, Taylor married Margaret Mackall Smith, a member of a prominent Maryland family. They had
four daughters over the next few years, losing two babies to sickness. As Zachary moved from one
wilderness outpost to another in the Mississippi Valley frontier, his family often accompanied him. In
1840, Mrs. Taylor finally settled down in Louisiana when Zachary assumed command of the fort at
Baton Rouge. Although a poorly paid career officer, Taylor had parlayed the 300 acres of land given to
him by his father into holdings in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi. In 1850, his estate was valued
at around $120,000 -- equivalent to $6 million today.
Indian Fighter Fame
By 1845, Taylor had gained fame as an Indian fighter in the nation's continuing warfare against Native
Americans. His service included postings in the present-day states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Mississippi,
Oklahoma, Kansas,
Zachary Taylor at the Battle of Lake Okeechobee, Florida, in 1836.
Louisiana, Arkansas, Florida, and Texas. Among other Indian battles, he engaged the Sacs, led by Chief
Black Hawk, in Illinois in 1832 and the Seminoles in Florida in the late 1830s.
Taylor's willingness to share the hardships of field duty with his men earned him the affectionate
nickname "Old Rough and Ready." Although he fought Native Americans in numerous engagements,
much of his service was devoted to protecting their lands from invading white settlers. Taylor seemed to
understand if not sympathize with the plight of the Native Americans, and he admired their style of
guerrilla warfare. He frequently bemoaned the incompetence of the citizen militia units that he
commanded in comparison to the superb discipline and unity of his Indian foes. For Taylor, the best
solution to the ongoing wars required a strong military presence to stand between white settlers and the
Native Americans. He viewed anything less as a poor and ultimately doomed solution.
Mexican War Hero
6
It was not his success as an Indian fighter, however, that propelled Zachary Taylor into national
prominence. That achievement came from his military victories against Mexican troops during the war
with Mexico (1846-1848). Briefly told, when Texas was granted statehood in 1845, President James K.
Polk ordered Taylor into disputed lands on the Texas-Mexico border. When Mexicans there attacked his
troops near the Rio Grande River, Polk declared to Congress, in May 1846, that war had begun by an
act of Mexico. Events then happened rapidly. With superior artillery, Taylor easily defeated the
substantially larger Mexican forces in Palo Alto, Mexico. Taylor then attacked the "un-destroyable" city
of Monterrey, inflicting heavy casualties on its Mexican defenders, leaving 800 killed or wounded.
General Winfield Scott, commander of all U.S. troops, then ordered half of Taylor's army to join his
troops for an assault on Veracruz. Mexican General
The Battle of Buena Vista. (hand colored illustration)
Santa Anna, intercepting a letter from Scott to Taylor, knew that "Old Zack" (another nickname) would
be left with just 6,000 men -- most of whom were nonregulars. In February 1847, Santa Anna threw his
nearly 20,000 soldiers into the Battle at Buena Vista, determined to annihilate "Old Rough and Ready."
The two armies clashed, and when the smoke cleared, 1,800 Mexican soldiers lay dead or wounded -Taylor lost 672. Thoroughly defeated, the "Mexican Napoleon," as Santa Anna called himself, left the
field, and General Zachary Taylor became an American hero.
The word of how Old Zack had fought alongside his troops in hand-to-hand combat at both Monterey
and Buena Vista spread like a prairie fire across the nation. Taylor was compared to American war
heroes George Washington and Andrew Jackson in the popular press. Stories were told about his
informal dress, the tattered straw hat on his head, and the casual way he always sat atop his beloved
horse, "Old Whitey," while shots buzzed around his head. The criticism that he had allowed the Mexican
army at Monterrey to surrender without disbanding held no sway in the popular mind.
At the time he became President, Zachary Taylor was the most popular man in America, a hero of the
Mexican-American War. However, at a time when Americans were confronting the explosive issue of
slavery, he was probably not the right man for the job.
Taylor was a wealthy slave owner who held properties in the plantation states of Louisiana, Kentucky,
and Mississippi. During his brief time in office -- he died only sixteen months after his election -- his
presidency foundered over the question of whether the national government should permit the spread of
slavery to the present-day states of California, New Mexico, and Utah, then newly won from Mexico. His
sudden death put Vice President Millard Fillmore into the White House, and Fillmore promptly threw
his support behind the Compromise of 1850, canceling out much of the impact of Taylor's presidency.

Taillefer) was born May 06, 1740, and died September 14, 1788. He married Susannah Lyme 1763 in
VA. She died Unknown.
Notes for John (The Signer) Penn:
"John Penn was born in Caroline Co, VA the child of Moses and Catherine Taylor Penn. At the time of
his father's death, he was eighteen and had only a few years at a country school. But after inheriting
his father's comfortable fortune, he was able to concentrate on study. He applied himself diligently in
the excellent library of his realitve, Edmund Pendleton, mastered the book on law he found there, and
was licensed to practice at the age of 21.
Two years later, he married Susannah Lyme and for about 12 years practiced law successfully in Va.
The, in 1774, he moved to Granville Co., NC where many of his relative proceded him.
John Penn is said to have possed an attractive personality and to have been a good speaker. As he
began to take part in NC public affiars, he soon made it clear that his personality attracted and
influenced the local voters and that, as a political orator, he was able to win their agreement to his way
8
of thinking............only a year after his arrival in the colony, was chosen to attend the Provincial
Congress.....In less than a month the Provincial Congress elected him to the First Continental Congress
in Philadelphia.
.......Penn soon abandoned any thought of their ever being able to work with the royal government. He
had written a letter from Philadelphia as late as Feb 1776 in which he said: "My first wish is that
America may be free; and second that she may be restored to Great Britain in peace and harmony and
upon Just terms." But now he knew that tyranny had gone too far and realized that a return to the
Empire was beyond hope.........
In August all three North Carolinians signed their names on America's birth certificate.
John Penn remained in Congress until 1777. Elected again the following years, he served until 1780.
..........
In 1780, Penn became a member of the Board of War. Within the next year or so, he declined a
judgeship because his health was failing. ..........in Sept 1788, he died at the early age of 48. Not one of
the North Carolina Signers ever lived to see his fiftieth birthday." SIGNERS OF THE

Lucy12 Penn, died Unknown. She married HON John Taylor; born December 19, 1753 in Caroline Co.,
VA; died August 20, 1824 in Caroline Co., VA.
Notes for HON John Taylor:
John Taylor was born at Mill Hill, in Caroline County, in 1754. At ten years of age, he was or phaned
and w a s adopted by his uncle the famous Edmund Pendleton. He graduated from the college of
William and Mary in 1770. He studied law under his uncle and began his own practice in 1774. The
career of Taylor really began in 1766 when the reformation led by Patrick Henry and Richard Henry
Lee exposed the extent of political corruption in Virginia. Taylor enlisted in the first brigade of Virginia
troops under the command of Patrick Henry, whom he ardently admired. He became a subordinate
officer of William Woodford and saw action at the Battle of Great Bridge. After the battle, he was
elected a major. In 1780, Taylor formed his own regiment which was sent to join the forces of the
Marquis De LaFayette. His participation in the war effort very nearly depleted Taylor's fortune.
The government recompensed him by granting him five thousand acres of land. After the war, he again
took up the practice of law. He was so successful that he retired from active practice in 1792, with a
much larger fortune than the one he lost in the war.
How Taylor spent the balance of his years is best expressed by Marshall Wingfield in his history of
Caroline County Virginia. "From 1776 to 1781 Taylor was member of the Virginia Legislature and as
such added his strength to that of Richard Henry Lee, Patrick Henry, James Monroe and George Mason
in firmly opposing the plans of Washington for a more perfect union and a more compact nation. For to
understand the life and activi ties of John Taylor it must be constantly bourn in mind that he was a
Virginian First and an American second."
He bought a large estate-Hazelwood-on the Rappahannock River, near Port Royal and devoted all of his
time and energies to agriculture. In 1803, he published a volume, entitled Arator, one of the first books
on agriculture ever written in this county. In this volume were suggestions for improvements of soils,
housing of slaves, rotation of crops and conservation of forests, and other agricultural questions of the
time." Taylor would become known as the "father of American agricul ture."
The site Hazelwood is marked by a historical marker, the text of which says the following. Hazelwood.
The home of John Taylor of Caroline, Jefferson's chief political lieutenant and a leading advocate of
States' Rights. The marker is located 1.3 miles north east of Port Royal.

Mont Pelier. He married Dorothea (Dolley) Payne Todd; born May 20, 1768; died July 12, 1849.
Notes for James (The President) Madison:
JAMES MADISON was perhaps the hardest working & most widely respected man of his day.
Commonly hailed as the Father of our Constitution, Madison had more to do with its conception than
did any other man. A strong Republican, he was later elected President of the United States. Born in to
an aristocratic family in Port Conway, Virginia, he was the eldest of 12 children. He entered the College
of New Jersey (now Princeton) in 1769. He graduated in 1771, completing a four year degree in two
years. He then studied theology, history, & law, both at the college & on his own. His public career
began in 1774 when he was appointed a member of the King George County Committee for Public
Safety in Virginia at the age of 23. Madison spent the rest of his life in service to his nation.
In 1776 he was a member of the Virginia constitutional committee, a body that drafted Virginia's first
constitution & a Bill of Rights which later became a model for the Bill of Rights amended to the U.S.
Constitution. Madison very actively supported religious toleration & was a leading advocate for the
separation of church & state. In this work he found a life-long partner & friend in Thomas Jefferson.
In 1779 Madison was elected to represent the state of Virginia to the Continental Congress. He
established himself as a leader in congress & as a tireless advocate for a federal structure. In 1785 he
had an opportunity to exercise the respect & influence he had earned in support of a federal
government. Washington & Madison organized the Alexandria Conference in order to settle commercial
dispute between Virginia & Maryland concerning the use of the Potomac River. The conference was a
great success. When the Maryland delegation suggested a larger meeting to include representatives from
Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, & Virginia in order to adopt a uniform commercial system,
Madison saw the potential for a larger scheme. He felt that a meeting of all the states should follow in
order to explore all commercial concerns & to amend the Articles of Confederation. The Annapolis
Convention met in 1786 with much arguing & little result. Only five states attended. Madison &
Hamilton took this opportunity to launch a general call for a constitutional convention. They persuaded
the presiding delegates to endorse a meeting to "take into consideration the situation of the United
States." They later persuaded the Continental Congress, reluctant though is was, to endorse this
conference—but only for the purpose of modifying the Articles of Confederation.
This became the Constitutional Convention, & though George Washington was appointed by Virginia to
lend prestige to the effort, James Madison would be its leader.
The convention opened on May 25th, 1787. Representatives from Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia,
Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, & South
Carolina were in attendance. New Hampshire did not send its delegation until later, & Rhode Island
refused to participate. In the entire proceeding only 55 men attended. The work they accomplished, &
conditions under which they worked, were quite remarkable. Among the first resolutions passed were
two very important measures: the proceeding would be held in secret &, a simple majority, rather than a
nine state majority, would be sufficient to pass articles into law. Without these provisions, the
convention would never have succeeded. Most of the delegates had been instructed by their state
legislatures that they were allowed only to modify the Articles of Confederation. Had these men been
subject to the scrutiny of the press & to continuous instruction from thier respective state governments,
the convention would have collapsed in short order. Madison immediately set the tone for the convention
by introducing a document that he wrote called The Virginia Plan.
10
The Virginia Plan was a radical departure fr om the stated intentions of the convention. It called for a
strong central government "consisting of a supreme Legislature, Executive, & Judiciary." It provided for
a national legislature consisting of two houses: one elected directly by the people, the other appointed
by the first from a body of nominees submitted by state legislatures. Representation in these bodies
would be based on the population of the states. It provided for an Executive to be elected by this
national legislature. It also defined a national judiciary & a "Council of Revision" charged with
reviewing the constitutionality of legislation. This plan was so very creative, & was presented so
persuasively by Madison & his supporters that it proceeded to pass into law within days. It was not until
June 15th that states' rights supporters were able to present an alternative. Presented by William
Paterson, a New Jersey lawyer, it was referred to as The New Jersey Plan.
This proposal would preserve the essential nature of the Articles of Confederation but gave the National
Congress strong powers to tax & regulate trade. Most important to those concerned with states' rights
was the feature that would protect the smaller states from being overwhelmed by the large ones: one
state, one vote. The delegates listened politely to this proposal for four days & then voted it down. Only
Delaware, New York, & New Jersey voted in favor.
Although Madison prevailed on the structure of the new federal government, he could not quell the
concerns of the smaller (or more lightly populated) states. There was a general concern that Virginia
would be able to dictate to the other states, given proportional representation. Debate on this issue was
fierce & finally, on July 2nd, a Grand Committee was selected to resolve these issues. Each state
selected one member & Mr. Franklin was appointed to chair. By July 12th a compromise had been
reached: referred to ever since as the Grand Compromise. The upper house (the Senate) would feature
equal representation for each of the states. The lower house would be based on proportional
representation. The formula called for one representative for every 40,000 inhabitants of a state. The
compromise on this point was that slaves, who were not otherwise considered, would count as three
fifths of a freeman. This restored some advantage to the southern states. With these allowances the
convention was able to continue.
A Committee of Detail was formed on July 26th. They prepared the first draft of a new constitution,
based on the Virginia Plan, & presented it to the convention for debate on August 6th. A month of
debate followed. Delegates hammered out the exact language of each article through painstaking
argument. Here, specifics of the Executive were worked out. The various states had learned from
experience the value in a strong executive. Where the Virginia Plan stipulated an executive elected by
the Legislature, the constitution created an independent Executive selected through a mechanism called
the Electoral College. This Executive would also have veto power over the Legislature, & would appoint
Judges to the courts, although these appointments were subject to review by the Senate.
There was another cloud hanging over the convention: the issue of slavery. Late in August a new
confrontation developed on the floor of the convention. Delegates from some of the northern states were
intent on eliminating, or at least limiting, slavery. They thought that the constitution would be an ideal
vehicle to do this. Madison commented in his private notes that "It seemed now to be pretty well
understood that the real difference lay, not between the large & small but between the N. & Southn.
States. The institution of slavery formed a line of discrimination." A second major factor of the Grand
Compromise, when all was finally settled, was that slavery was actually protected by the constitution
(Article 4, section 2 "No person held to service or labor...") The delegates further resolved that the slave
trade would be left alone for another twenty years.
Madison had been a driving force in the formation of the Constitution, from organizing the convention,
setting its scope & tone, to ironing out every obstacle that threatened its success. Through it all he took
copious notes in his own personal shorthand. These notes constitute our best & most complete record of
the events of that summer in 1787. Because of the great public controversy & the freedom of exchange of
the floor debate (owing to secrecy), he swore not to make these journals public until most of the people
involved had passed away. So it was that the notes were not published until the 1830's, more than forty
years after the fact. Madison continued to champion the federal cause at every opportunity. About a
third of the Federalist Papers are from his pen.
Madison was elected to the first House of Representatives as a Federalist & served throughout
Washington's administration (1789—1797). He fought, sometimes bitterly, with Hamilton concerning
economic policy. As a trusted consultant to George Washington, Madison played a large part in forming
the Departments of State, Treasury, & War. His most important work during these years was the
promotion of a Bill of Rights that would form the first ten amendments to the constitution. In close
correspondence with Thomas Jefferson (who was none too pleased with the over-all tone of the
constitution) he determined to remedy some of the shortcomings that resulted from compromises reached
at the convention. It is very likely that the Constitution would not have been ratified were it not for a
solemn & oft-repeated promise that the Bill of Rights would soon follow. In fact, the Bill was moving
rapidly through the process in the states as the Constitution was ratified, & was adopted within six
months of the Constitution.
11
When John Adams was elected President, Madison retired to his home in Virginia. He wrote the
Virginia Resolutions, protesting against the Alien & Sedition Acts. These four measures, adopted in
1798, were the first overt challenges to such personal liberties as had been established by the
constitution. They provided for:
• a naturalization act requiring residence of 14 years before foreigners could become citizens. This
seemed to critics to be a clear effort to keep immigrating Irishmen, who tended to vote Republican, away
from the polls for about 14 years.
• an alien act allowing the deportation by executive order of any non-citizen that the president found
"dangerous to the peace & safety of the United States".
• an alien enemies act, by which subjects of an enemy nation might be deported or imprisoned in
wartime. This act was limited to two years, & as Adams never declared a state of war, it expired.
• a sedition act, stipulating criminal prosecution for conspiracy against the government or for
interfering with its operations. This law, as entrusted to the federal courts for enforcement, defined
nearly any criticism of the federal government or any member of it as a criminal libel. It had a chilling
effect on citizens as well as the press.
Until the adoption of these laws, citizenship had been the business of each state. The provisions against
aliens were a reaction to the revolutionary movements in Europe. Federalists were very concerned that
popular revolutions that might threaten the federal government would find a voice in the United States.
The Sedition Act, however, was the point of greatest outrage. The aggressive attitudes of the
Washington, & now Madison, administrations toward "popular discontent" & expressions of
disagreement or contempt for the government had placed a doubt in many minds whether the first
amendment would be honored. The Alien & Sedition Acts seemed to be in clear violation of the
constitution. Madison was the author of the Virginia Resolutions, a protest of these acts & an effort to
overrule their effect at the state level. Jefferson also wrote a package, the Kentucky Resolutions, with the
same objective.
In 1801, after Jefferson was elected President, Madison entered the Cabinet as Secretary of State. This
was a period of rapid growth & change. He was deeply involved in many of the federal reforms executed
by Thomas Jefferson, many of which were intended to reverse the effects of federalist rule. Jefferson, in
his close friendship with Madison, also recognized that Madison was a thoroughly practical man whose
political skills would be of great value to the reforms he would pursue.
James Madison succeeded Jefferson as President in 1808. He was, at the time, the only man who could
carry forward the mantle of Republicanism, but he inherited from Jefferson a deeply troubled
Presidency in a dangerous world. France & Britain were locked in struggle of domination. Each took
advantage of the United States as it was struggling with its own problems. Madison the delegate was
widely loved & respected for his reason, even temper, & humility. As President, however, he was
expected to dominate those around him. From appearances, at least, he was unable to do this. He was
also very accustomed to living by his wits, as he so amply demonstrated in his roles as representative &
Secretary. Thus he often made judgments in foreign relations too quickly—not realizing that he would be
lied to or mislead by agents of the European contestants. Britain & France were preying on merchants,
citizens, & mariners at every turn, impounding ships & men. There was great fear that these nations had
designs on the interior of the United States. These conflicts lead ultimately to the War of 1812. Madison
lost many of his followers in the War of 1812, for he was essentially a man of peace & not very
successful as a war president; he was, however, re-elected for a second term a few months after war was
declared. Several American defeats on land & the burning of the Capitol in Washington decreased his
standing. The war ended with the Treaty of Ghent in December 1814. The Madison presidency had been
disaster. But we must look at the larger context of the problems facing the nation when he gained office.
The difficult relations with Britain & the jealousies of France were very real threats long before
President Madison took the helm. Indeed, Madison had spent a lot of time & effort fighting the
Federalist administrations over the policies, practices, and compromises that informed the War of 1812.
In retrospect, he carried a poorly focused & dangerous war to a conclusion that was quite satisfactory
to the American people. As often happens, a very unpopular President enjoyed great popularity after his
presidency. Madison's esteem amongst his fellow citizens grew to remarkable heights long before his
death.
At the close of his second term he retired to Montpelier, his estate in Virginia. President Madison's
retirement encompassed twenty years of engagement beginning with a project in partnership with
Thomas Jefferson. Together they would establish the University of Virginia, attending every detail from
soliciting funds, to construction, to attracting talented teachers. They even went so far as to define much
of the curriculum. Following the death of Jefferson, Madison spent several years attending to Jefferson's
12
legacy. He helped family members arrange the publication of T.J.'s letters & papers, & arranged for
simultaneous publication of in France. He answered numerous inquiries from biographers &, only when
convinced that an inquiring author was sincere, supplied some modest personal notes & stories about
Jefferson.
Madison attended the Virginia Convention of 1829 but he contributed little to the formal proceedings. It
appears that he was dissatisfied with the quality of the representatives he found there, though he said
nothing about it in public. By man y accounts he had quite an influence, in private conversation, with
several of the young delegates who attended.
James Madison was well read & active in promoting republican ideals. He received several papers each
day. He maintained written correspondence, even after rheumatism made it impossible for him to write,
by dictating his letters. Madison entertained guests from Europe and America. All were amazed at his
energy & his animated conversation. He died on the morning of June 28th, 1836.
Madison was born in Port Conway, Virginia on March 16, 1751. His parents Colonel James Madison,
Sr. (March 27, 1723 – February 27, 1801) and Eleanor Rose "Nellie" Conway (January 9, 1731 –
February 11, 1829) were the prosperous owners of the tobacco plantation in Orange County, Virginia,
where Madison spent most of his childhood years. Madison's plantation life was made possible by his
paternal great-great-grandfather, James Madison, who utilized Virginia's headright system to import a
significant number of indentured servants, thereby allowing him to accumulate a large tract of land.
In 1769, Madison left the plantation to attend the College of New Jersey (later to become Princeton
University), finishing its four-year course in two years, but exhausting himself from overwork in the
process. When he regained his health, he served in the state legislature (1776-79) and became known as
a protégée of Thomas Jefferson. In this capacity, he became a prominent figure in Virginia state politics,
helping to draft their declaration of religious freedom and persuading Virginia to give their
northwestern territories (consisting of most of modern-day Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois) to the
Continental Congress.

Notes for Anderson Lafayette Taylor:
Few areas in the United States symbolize the American pioneer spirit more than Cumberland Gap.
Crossing the gap meant encountering America's first western frontier and symbolically severing
European ties. Between 1760 and 1850 more than 300,000 people walked, rode, or were carried over the
Appalachian Mountains through Cumberland Gap.
Formed by a stream and enlarged by wind and weather, the Cumberland Gap, named by surveyor
Thomas Walker for his English patron, the Duke of Cumberland, son of George II of England, is fifteen
hundred feet above sea level. Various types of sediments including shells, shale, limestone, and gravel
surround the area and attest to the great earth disturbances that formed the gap.
Settlers followed a trail over the gap initially used by Native Americans, who had enlarged it from an
animal trace. They were entering a prized hunting ground, coveted by the Shawnees to the north and
Cherokees to the south. The French and Indian War, followed by the American Revolution, briefly
halted white settlement. But with the restoration of peace, the flow of hunters, settlers, and land
speculators through Cumberland Gap was resumed. Perhaps the most famous traveler was Daniel
Boone, who agreed to take settlers north into Kentucky after first making several hunting trips through
the gap.
By 1800 the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia claimed the area through the Cumberland
Gap. After 1840 a weekly stage carried freight, mail, and passengers and gave the area a prosperous
commercial appearance. During the Civil War, the gap changed hands four times as the North and
South fought for control of this strategic gateway. Initially considered part of Kentucky, and therefore
under Union control, the first troops to occupy the Cumberland Gap were Confederate forces under
the command of Brigadier General Felix K. Zollicoffer. Union commander Brigadier General George
W. Morgan took the "American Gibraltar" on June 18, 1862. Morgan did not remain at the gap,
however, and Confederates reoccupied the area immediately. After a year of inactivity, Union forces
reappeared, and Major General Ambrose E. Burnside demanded and received unconditional
surrender. The gap was not seriously threatened again during the remainder of the war.
In 1841, Fate and Nannie Taylor came through the Gap with 5 of their children. As one descendent put
it "Nannie had one in her arms and one in her belly." One son died on the way and the youngest
Mariah Jane died after they reached Tennessee but a new daughter was born 2 years later and named
for the dead infant. Martha Jane Taylor who became my great grandmother.
