More North Texans come to Texas Health Resources (THR) hospitals for their care than
to any other health care provider. THR hospitals face formidable challenges to keep
pace with an ever-growing demand, but we are determined to stay true to our faithbased mission to improve the health of people in the communities we serve. We know
what we must do, and we have the plan and energy to do it.
Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation is vital to the mission of THR and Presbyterian
Healthcare System. We need your continued support and involvement so we can
provide the margin of excellence and community benefit you’ve come to expect
from Presbyterian hospitals.
Nonprofit hospitals are the bedrock of the health care system in North Texas, caring
for two out of every three residents. As a nonprofit, Presbyterian Healthcare System
faces challenges on many fronts. Government funding for health care is under constant
downward pressure, while the costs of providing care continue to rise. Competition is
intense–for patients, staff and up-to-date facilities. Advances in medical technology
present new treatment possibilities, and, at the same time, create new funding challenges to acquire and maintain the technology. Plus, we’re investing significant
resources to continuously improve the quality of medical care and patient safety.
Meanwhile, the number of uninsured people in our society continues to increase.
Texas now leads the nation in uninsured, with more than one in four residents without
health coverage. We’re also facing the looming challenge of increased demand for
services as the baby boom generation ages and approaches retirement. So in addition
to providing a safety net of charity care for people who do not have the means to pay,
Presbyterian hospitals reach out through uncompensated community benefit programs
designed to teach people-of all ages and all economic levels-how to live healthier lives.
We face significant challenges, but your advocacy and financial support will make it
possible for Presbyterian hospitals to provide the quality of care you expect and to
reach beyond the walls of our hospitals into the community.

Dear Friends,
Inspiring commitment for better health
care! This vision is the driving force behind
each and every thing we do at Presbyterian
Healthcare Foundation. With this vision
guiding us, and with the help of our many
community friends, we made significant
progress during 2004 in providing the
Presbyterian hospitals the assistance
necessary to achieve the “margin of
excellence” to better serve patients and
communities.
The generosity of our trustees, leadership,
staff, grateful patients, foundations and
corporations generated record levels of
financial and volunteer support. This support
helped provide for leading-edge technology,
expansion and renovation of facilities,
continuing medical education, medical
research and community outreach efforts.
In 2004, I was especially impressed with
the overwhelming support shown by
employees and physicians on the medical
staffs for the capital campaigns at the Allen
and Plano hospitals. A dramatic increase in
the membership of Presbyterian Healthcare
Foundation’s Covenant Society, including
the establishment of a new Covenant
Society chapter at Presbyterian Hospital of
Kaufman, helps to secure a successful
future for Presbyterian Healthcare System.

This annual event brought more than
550 people together to support the
Parkinson’s disease program and the
Special Care Nursery at Presbyterian
Hospital of Dallas.

On November 15, 2004, the emergency
services team at Presbyterian Hospital
of Dallas participated in a disaster drill
to test the hospital’s Major Disaster
Hospital Response Plan.
Past and present trustees and special
guests gathered together to recognize
some of our strongest supportersour trustees.
Leaving a Legacy
Three individuals continue to make a
difference well after they have passed
on by including Presbyterian Healthcare
Foundation in their will or estate plans.

2005 Greer Garson Gala A Hit!
“I thought the Greer Garson Gala was by
far one of the best events I have attended,”
stated Mandy Peters, attorney with Jones
Day law firm and a guest at the 2005
Greer Garson Gala. “It was wonderful to
see the community out in full force to stand
behind such a worthwhile cause. The entire
night was organized, classy, well-executed
and, most of all, fun!” Ms. Peters and her
friends enjoyed the exquisite cuisine, the
free-flowing spirits and dancing until the
wee hours of the night on April 16 along
with more than 550 other guests.
The night began with a cocktail hour with
tasty appetizers, a silent auction with many
desirable items up for bid and the musical
delights of the Ricki Derek Band, who played
songs from classics like Frank Sinatra. Dinner

began a little after 7:30 p.m. and guests
were so intrigued with the silent auction
items and the excitement of so many
familiar faces that they found it difficult to
break away to their tables in the main dining
area. But once they all found their seats,
the guests were pleased with four courses
prepared by Wendy Krispin Catering.
The program for the night consisted of
many thanks to the events’ chairpersons,
Lyle Foster and Katherine Mathes, and their
many advisory and executive committee
members, as well as the gala honorary
co-chairs, Angie Harmon Sehorn and Jason
Sehorn. Mrs. Sehorn spoke sincerely about
her positive experience at Presbyterian
Hospital of Dallas (PHD), her and her husband’s complete support of the hospital and
the physicians and health care staff who
help make PHD their hospital of choice. In
addition to the spoken gratitude, a video
was shown highlighting the skill, dedication
and teamwork of the health care staff and
physicians on the medical staff at PHD.
The overwhelming gratitude shown during
the program only served to further infuse
the delightful mood of the evening. After
dinner, Sauce, a local dance band, played
popular hit songs while guests danced
and enjoyed themselves.
“The gala was one that all of the guests
are sure to remember,” said Ben Casey,
president of Presbyterian Healthcare
Foundation. “We are so proud of the turnout and the success of the event.”
The E. E. and Greer Garson Fogelson Humanitarian Award was created to recognize a person, or persons, who have shown a concern for the greater awareness of
Parkinson’s disease. It is presented each year at the Greer Garson Gala. This year,
Malcolm Stewart, M.D., neurologist on the medical staff at Presbyterian Hospital of
Dallas (PHD) received the E. E. and Greer Garson Fogelson Humanitarian Award for his
support and dedication to helping to “ease the burden and find a cure” for Parkinson’s
disease. Dr. Stewart serves as the medical director of the American Parkinson’s Disease
Association (APDA) Information & Referral Center at PHD and has worked tirelessly to
provide guidance, support and services that benefit countless patients in North Texas.
Dr. Stewart’s patients revere him as a truly gifted physician, and one particular
Parkinson’s patient, Mitch Lechelt, shared his story with us.
Mitch Lechelt, a retired American Airlines captain who is married with two children,
was a mere 36 years old when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. An avid
guitarist and airline pilot, Mr. Lechelt was devastated to receive his diagnosis. Upon
beginning his treatment with Malcolm Stewart, M.D. in 1993, Mr. Lechelt said he felt
he was in the most competent of hands and he had hope that Dr. Stewart would be
able to help him.
“Dr. Stewart is the best doctor in the world as far as I’m concerned,” said Mr. Lechelt.
In October of 2004, Michael Desaloms, M.D., neurosurgeon on the medical staff at
PHD, and his team performed Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery on Mr. Lechelt.
He described the effects of this surgery as “tremendous” and “life-changing.” DBS is
performed through the implantation of an electrode containing four electrical contacts
in the Subthalamic Nucleus (STN) of the brain. This high frequency stimulation of the
STN has become the neurosurgical treatment of choice in the alleviation of the cardinal symptoms of Parkinson’s disease patients for whom medication does not provide
relief, according to Dr. Stewart.

Approximately $290,000 was raised from
this event, which is a great accomplishment. Above all, ticket sales, sponsorships
and the community’s excitement for this
event all increased from previous years.
“I’m not able to go back to flying, but I am able to play my guitar, which is a love of
mine. I know that I am very blessed to have quality physicians and health care staff in
my hometown to treat this disease,” said Mr. Lechelt. “When I was in the hospital for
the DBS procedure, I felt like I was the only patient there. The caregivers were so
attentive and made the experience a positive one for me and my family. As far as I’m
concerned, nobody compares to Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas.”

“Through the hard work of many, this event
was a huge success for the Parkinson’s
program and the Special Care Nursery at
PHD,” said Mark H. Merrill, president of
PHD. “Just as important as the monies
raised, the Greer Garson Gala was a huge
success in spreading the word about the
quality of care and programs provided at
this fine hospital. If we gained one new
community friend from this event, we
have achieved our goal.”
With more than 550 people in attendance
on April 16, one might say the goal was
achieved with exceptional success!

Presbyterian Sports Network Links
Community Athletics with Sports
Medicine
Presbyterian Sports Network (PSN) is a
referral and outreach resource of Presbyterian
Healthcare System (PHS) connecting
organized sports programs and individual
athletes with sports medicine and health
care professionals to help them protect
their health and safety. “We are here for
coaches, athletic trainers and individual
athletes who want access to quality sports
medicine,” said Ken Locker, director of
sports marketing for PSN. A major service
of PSN is to provide licensed athletic trainers
for sports teams during practices or games.
PSN can also arrange for a sports medicine
physician to be present or on-call during
athletic events. For more information

A Suite Experience at
Presbyterian Hospital of Allen
Presbyterian Hospital of Allen (PHA) continues to be the only hospital in the Collin
County area to provide the single-room
maternity care concept, where moms can
labor, deliver and recover all in the same
room. This concept promotes a familycentered environment of care, allowing
mothers to learn how to care for their baby
right at the bedside, instead of the baby
being immediately taken to the nursery.
The spacious labor-delivery-recovery suites
feature comfortable space furnished much

Continued Innovation at
Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas
As of April, 2005, William Ryan, M.D.,
cardiothoracic surgeon on the medical staff
at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas (PHD), is
one of only 13 surgeons in the world who
has performed more than 100 Ross
Procedures–a highly specialized valve
replacement surgery–considered one of
the most advanced treatment options for
aortic valve disease. Using the patient’s
own tissue for valve replacement, the
Ross Procedure offers numerous benefits
to patients. Dr. Ryan said, “The technique
not only relieves the symptoms of aortic
valve disease, but allows some people to
live vigorous lives without the need for
blood thinners and with a very low risk for

Advanced Technology at
Presbyterian Hospital of Kaufman
The focus of the Diabetes Community
Outreach Program at Presbyterian Hospital
of Winnsboro (PHW) is to bring awareness
of symptoms of diabetes, provide education
about the disease and offer various treatment options. Classes on self-management
of the disease are offered to the community through physician referral, along with
additional community services, at no
charge. The program offers the monthly
Diabetes Support Group and “education
moments” from area professionals who
live with diabetes to keep the diabetes
patients “in the know.” PHW also offers
diabetes screening at the hospital or off-site
at area businesses. “We are able to help
many people that would not typically
receive care for their diabetes through this
outreach program,” said Matthew Troup,
president of PHW. For more information

Presbyterian Hospital of Kaufman (PHK)
recently acquired advanced equipment for
its Diagnostic and Imaging Center, including
a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
machine as well as other technology that
will give area residents local access to
diagnostic and imaging services comparable
to those offered by Dallas hospitals. The
new technology is centrally located in a
new 3,600 square-foot Diagnostic and
Imaging Center on the hospital’s first floor.
Tests such as general x-rays, mammograms,
MRIs, bone densitometry and CT scans will
be provided in an easily accessible area.
“Offering sophisticated imaging services
to Kaufman in a convenient, comfortable
setting was the guiding principal in our
plans for the new center,” said Kirk King,
hospital president. For more information

Presbyterian Hospital of Winnsboro
Helps the Community
Texas Back Institute Strives to
Revolutionize Spine Surgery
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) has approved the CHARITÉ Artificial
Disc, a device used to replace damaged
or worn out spinal discs. Texas Back
Institute (TBI), located on the campus of
Presbyterian Hospital of Plano, led the
FDA study as the first center in the United
States to perform the artificial disc surgery
in March, 2000. While artificial replacements are commonly used in hips and
knees, this is the first FDA approval of
such a device for spinal discs. “Until now
spine surgery relieved pain by fusing discs,

There is an overwhelming sense of obligation to help one another and to reach out
to those who are less fortunate at all of
the hospitals and entities that are part of
Texas Health Resources (THR). Employees
and physicians on the medical staffs are
overwhelmingly gracious with their time,
talents and financial resources. This fact is
evident in the commitment of two special
Presbyterian Healthcare System employees.
Nicole Bullock, RD, previously the manager
of Conference Services and the Jackson
Patio Café at Presbyterian Hospital of
Dallas (PHD), who has recently accepted
the special events manager position with
Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation, and
Natividad Smith, who works in the Food &
Nutrition department at PHD, are fine
examples of generosity in action. Through
their gifts to the annual THR Associates
Employee Campaign they choose to support
PHD’s community outreach efforts within
the Vickery Meadows neighborhood, which
is located just to the east of the PHD
campus.

“Working for a faith-based, not-for-profit
hospital gives me a sense of stewardship
I would not feel as strongly in a secular,
for-profit business,” said Mrs. Bullock.
“I believe we are called to serve and to be
a blessing to others with our God-given
gifts. It is important to me that THR recognizes that as an employer.”
Both women enjoy not only their work,
but the opportunities presented to them
through their jobs to give back.
The community outreach efforts benefiting
the Vickery Meadow neighborhood include
the Vickery Meadow Improvement District,
which exists to enhance quality of life
and thereby increase the values of real
property and real property improvements
within the residential, commercial and
medical communities of the Vickery
Meadow area; the After School Program
at Vickery Meadow Elementary School,
allowing students to have a safe place to
receive tutoring and care after school
hours; and the Vickery Health Center that

support my future and the future of those

“I have supported the United Way
Campaign and the THR Food Drive. I have
volunteered in the Vickery Meadow area
and know how great the need is in our
own backyard,” said Mrs. Bullock. “My
husband and I have a marriage mission
statement that we will choose to live
below our means in order to help those
who have little to no choice. I cannot live
my marriage mission or the hospital’s
mission and ignore that need.”

Disaster Drill Tests Preparedness of Emergency
Services Team at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas
plane crashes into the Texas Motor Speedway grandstand
where 2,800 spectators are sitting, having no time to react or
evacuate. Within seconds of the plane crashing into the
grandstand, the Texas Motor Speedway emergency services
teams are activated to respond to the large scale disaster event.
Some time following the crash it is learned that a radioactive
substance has been dispersed from the plane among the crowd,
adding to the extremity of the situation.

How would we respond, as a city and a region, if this tragedy actually occurred? We would
respond using the hospital’s emergency response plan as well as the Major Disaster
Hospital Response Plan. The emergency services team at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas
(PHD), consisting of employees and health care staff who have been trained to handle this
type of situation, were put to the test in their execution of the Major Disaster Hospital
Response Plan on November 15, 2004. The team was given the scenario described above
for the Texas Motor Speedway during a Disaster Drill meant to test the preparedness and
response of local, county, state and federal emergency response agencies.
“I believe that the emergency services team at PHD did very well during the disaster drill,”
said Cynthia Walker, a member of the PHD emergency services team. “We were confronted with scenarios that we could not have planned for, which allowed us to fine tune our
procedures. In the case of an actual emergency of this nature, I believe we have the tools
and the knowledge necessary to respond.”
Seventy-five mock victims were sent to PHD for decontamination by the specially trained
team of volunteers, the mock patients were then sent through triage in the emergency
department and taken into the hospital for continued treatment.
“We are very proud of our employees and medical staff and the great teamwork during this
drill,” said Tony McClure, safety manager for PHD.

A Night of Gratitude and Friendship
Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation and
Presbyterian Healthcare System honored
past and current trustees and special guests
at a dinner held at the Dallas Museum of
Art on November 9, 2004. The event,
which will be an annual affair, was a time
to acknowledge those who have given
their time and talents to helping
Presbyterian Healthcare System achieve its
mission of improving the health of the
communities served.
“This event was a pleasure for me to host
as we showed our appreciation for the
leadership that each of our past and present
trustees have provided in so many ways
over the past forty plus years,” said Bill
Cooper, chairman of the Presbyterian
Healthcare Resources board and trustee
event host.
“This event served as a time of fellowship
with friends and as a time to say “thank
you” to those who have contributed to
the legacy of strong leadership within
Presbyterian Healthcare System,” said
Jerry Farrington, Trustee Emeritus of the
Presbyterian Healthcare Resources board.
“We stand on the shoulders of those who
have preceded us,” said Mr. Casey. “At this
special event, we honored those who
helped build the first Presbyterian hospital
in Dallas in 1966 and those who have and
are leading what has become the successful
Presbyterian Healthcare System.”
The evening began with a reception near
the Hamon Atrium with music from the
St. Mark’s School of Dallas string quartet to
brighten the atmosphere. Afterward, remarks
were made by Mr. Cooper, followed by
Ben Casey, president of Presbyterian
Healthcare Foundation. Doug Hawthorne,
president and CEO of THR and Presbyterian
Healthcare Resources, presented Bill Mays
with the newly created Bill Mays Patient
Service Award (see sidebar). Mr. Hawthorne
closed the program with an overview of
the goals and direction for the future of
Presbyterian Healthcare System.

On November 9, in addition to acknowledging
the many accomplishments of Presbyterian
Healthcare System through the dedication of
its trustees, a newly created special service
award was presented to Bill Mays, for whom
this award is named. Mr. Mays served as the
director of patient and community relations for
Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas until his death
on December 26, 2004. Mr. Mays provided
almost 30 years of service to Presbyterian
Healthcare System and was a beloved member of the Presbyterian family, making patients
and their families feel more at home during
their hospital stay. Mr. Mays, affectionately
called the “Ambassador” of Presbyterian
Healthcare System, filled his days and, at
times, nights with patient visits, often times
communicating with physicians on the medical
staff and nurses about patients’ needs. Mr. Mays
was undoubtedly a vital link between patients
and the hospital.
“Bill Mays was there for patients and their
families, day in and day out,” said Doug
Hawthorne, president and CEO of THR and
Presbyterian Healthcare Resources. “Bill’s
dedication to caring for patients and their
families truly exemplified our mission of
improving the health of the people in the
communities we serve. We are so grateful to
have had him as part of the Presbyterian and
THR family and he will be greatly missed.”
The Bill Mays Patient Service Award will be
voted on by a special committee, and awarded at the annual trustee dinner when a person deserving of recognition for providing an
exceptional level of service to Presbyterian
Healthcare System, its patients and mission
is identified.

VING A LEGACY
R O U G H A N E S TAT E G I F T
One of the original founders of Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas,
Frank Kidd, Jr., M.D., retired from his position as a surgeon on
the medical staff at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas in 1973 and
retired from life in 1993. In 2004, Dr. Kidd educated more than
175 physicians from across North Texas about the latest in surgery
at the Frank Kidd Lectureship Series, which is held bi-annually at
Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas.

Greer Garson Fogelson, Academy
award-winning actress and philanthropist who was married to Dallas
oilman E.E. “Buddy” Fogelson, gave
her final curtain call when she was
laid to rest in 1996. Last year, Greer
Garson Fogelson helped Mrs. Betty
Newman, a brain tumor patient who
underwent surgery at the E.E. and
Greer Garson Fogelson Center for
Neurosciences at Presbyterian Hospital
of Dallas, regain her balance and
agility, allowing Mrs. Newman to run
and play with her grandchildren.

John “Jack” Jackson died in 2002 at
the age of 89. He and his late wife,
Katie, spent years being devoted to
each other and to giving back to their
community. In 2004, Mr. Jackson
provided residents in the Presbyterian
Village North retirement community
the opportunity to gather together
each day for Bible study, to play a
game of bridge, hear music performed by local high school students
and to just spend time as a community in the expanded Corrigan
Building activity center.

Promoting the Spirit of Giving
The President’s Leadership Councils at both Presbyterian Hospitals of Dallas
and Plano are made up of outstanding individuals who work to promote the
spirit of giving. These community leaders further the enrichment of community
programs and services and act as models for others. Members of the two
groups work with Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation staff and entity staff
to identify individual, corporation and foundation prospects for support for
nursing and allied health education, community outreach and patient care
programs, research and capital projects and other funding initiatives.

Scholarship Program
The Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship Program provides
scholarships to nurses and allied health professionals to
attend continuing education conferences. Ongoing education
is important to keep nurses and allied health professionals
current on the latest trends in medical research, technology
and procedures. To help offset the costs associated with
attending continuing education conferences, the medical/
dental staff of Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas created the
Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship Program in 1986.
The program later expanded to benefit all Presbyterian
hospitals.
