COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: CREATIVE DRAMA & MOVEMENT 5 – 7 year olds Intro to Acting and Musical Theatre This class will be exploring the freedom of expression and movement while also learning to work in an ensemble. Creating a stage presence, uniquely their own, will be of major importance. Many people have great voices, but that doesn’t mean they are great singers. It is not about how great your voice is … It is about how great you can tell a story! ACTING BOOTCAMP 12 and older This course will hone the students' skills and introduce them to The Meisner Technique. Focus will be on developing the ability to "live truthfully under imaginary circumstances". Students will learn the importance of The Reality of Doing, and the simplicity of The Pinch-Ouch. Finally, students will develop the ability to read behavior and react honestly by mastering The Repetition Game. A student should come out of this class with a new outlook on acting, as a craft that focuses not on yourself, but on those around you. IMPROV 12 and older For experienced improv performers and newcomers alike, this course will develop and strengthen the student's improvisation skills and confidence on stage. By learning to set up the components of the Improv platform (the "who", the "what" and the "where"), students will be given a practical roadmap to creating any improvised scene from scratch. The students will also learn important Improv skills like Accepting and Advancing and Give Rather Than Receive. MUSICAL THEATRE DANCE 10 and older Alexandra Dow's specialty is that being from NYC she knows a lot of original Broadway choreography and combinations. The workshop will touch on the following disciplines which are designed to teach students to understand their bodies through stretching and dance exercises. Emphasis is on the body as a tool to interpret music and lyrics while combining choreography and character work. Emphasis will be on theatre dance generically and ballet and jazz specifically as can be applied to musical theatre. Students will learn the discipline of dance through exercises, movement and choreography. In the curriculum listed above, Ms. Dow will take and implement all of the techniques, styles and choreography she has learned over the years and apply it to conform to all different levels for students. Allowing them to learn, thrive and grow at their own pace individually. Ms. Dow's teaching syllabus is aimed to be versatile and conducive to every level from beginner to intermediate to advanced. It can work and be applied correctly to every level, and as an instructor she will always strive to make sure she teaches the appropriate techniques and movement that is applicable and complies to that specific class' abilities and skills; to master the process of picking up, interpreting and artistically conceptualizing a processed or established piece of choreography and movement, by transforming the piece to conform and intertwine with the music it’s paired with. Classes will touch on: -Understanding your body through correct and proper movement, posture, flexibility, coordination and performance -Interpreting music and lyrics and combining that with choreography and character work/development (ie. how would this person execute this specific piece of movement in a particular song) -The disciplines of jazz and ballet and how they are relevant to all aspects of musical theater movement -For singer/dancers, how to GET through, learn and pick up choreography/movement at an open dance call or dance callback -Dance improvisation and the importance of applying it in class, rehearsal, auditions, etc. -Comparing/contrasting different styles and genres of choreography and movement in musical theater. -Contemporary vs. Traditional
