Salute to Families
As individuals, we find in our families a sense of identity, purpose and security.
It is through family life that our most cherished values and traditions are passed
from one generation to the next. Within the shelter of home and family, we learn
how to give and receive love. There we discover the worth and rights of ourselves
as individuals. We learn important lessons about love and faith, duty and fidelity,
personal responsibility and concern for others. The integrity of the family is
essential to our ability to remain a strong and stable community.
The family that Mick and Judy Guttau have created is truly one
to be admired. Their leadership and commitment to each other
and to their community has made a lasting impact on everyone
around them.
Mick and Judy met at Iowa State University in 1967. After graduation, the couple
married. Mick served in Vietnam, Judy taught school in Ankeny. When Mick
returned, the couple moved back to Treynor.
The mission of Heartland Family Service is to strengthen individuals and families
in our community through education, counseling and support services. Heartland
Family Service has created the Salute to Families Recognition Program because
we believe strong family life deserves to be identified and honored. The program
is sponsored locally by Heartland Family Service and endorsed by the national
Alliance for Children and Families.
Mick, who majored in agriculture, took a job at the local bank where he had the
opportunity to help other local farmers—something he was passionate about.
Through a fortunate series of events, the couple purchased Treynor State Bank
in 1978, and have developed it into a remarkable financial institution—TS Bank.
Mick is chairman and CEO and Judy is secretary of the board. Mick also serves as
chairman of the board of Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines.
Family Week of the Midlands
Several organizations benefit from the support and assistance of the Guttaus,
including Living Hope Community Church, Alegent Health/Mercy Hospital, Deaf
Missions, 4-H, Good News Jail and Prison Ministry, CB Senior Center, IWCC Arts
Center and Treynor Optimist Club.
National Family Week was first proclaimed in 1972 and is now proclaimed annually
by the President of the United States and governors across the nation, including
Governor Chet Culver of Iowa and Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman. It is
with this support that Heartland Family Service salutes the many strong families
throughout Southwest Iowa.

Mick and Judy have two adult children—Heidi and Josh—who observed and
learned from their parents’ example, and are now passing those strengths to their
own children. Heidi is an attorney for Baird Holm, serves on the TS Bank board
of directors, and is active in HOPE-Net Ministries, Deaf Missions of Council Bluffs,
Vision Treynor Group, and Fellowship of Faith Christian Center. Heidi and her
husband Rick Fox have three children—Brock, 9; Blake, 7 and Emmersen, 5.
Josh is president and CFO of TS Bank, and has served as a board member for
Heartland Family Service, Treynor School District, Alegent Health Foundation/
Mercy Hospital, Fellowship of Faith Christian Center and Iowa Bankers Association.
Josh and his wife Shelly have four children—Star’onna, 15; Shianne, 14; Joslyn,
6 and Dane, 3.
The incredible leadership, dedication and contributions of this family have
strengthened Treynor and its surrounding communities. The Guttau family truly
serves as an inspiring example of strong family life in Southwest Iowa.

Commitment
ommitment to Family
Dave and Arian Haddix have made community service a way of
life for their family. Even though their children are young—Hunter,
age 11; Jocelyn, 10; and Cooper, 4—they have already learned the
importance of giving back.
Arian and Dave have both lost family members and friends to cancer. They couldn’t
stand the feeling of not doing something to help, and became involved with the
American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event. They started as volunteers
and then quickly became members of the planning committee and eventually
chairpersons of the Pottawattamie County event. After nine years of volunteer
service, Arian became a full-time employee of the ACS. Her family continues to
volunteer alongside her.

The Haddix family has raised their children to be passionate about helping others,
and they work together, as a family, to help the cause. Their older children,
Hunter and Jocelyn, joined their first Relay at just 5 and 6 years old. Cooper has
participated ever since he was just 6 weeks old. And the three children haven’t
missed a race since then. Jocelyn even captains her own team, the Lemonheads,
and raised over $1,000 for the American Cancer Society this year. Together, the
Haddix family views Relay for Life as a way to do something for those who can’t.
Beyond their commitment to the American Cancer Society, the Haddix family helps
out wherever they are needed. They are also involved with the Pottawattamie
County Tobacco Prevention Coalition, their children’s Parent Teacher Organization,
coaching Youth Soccer, Leadership Council Bluffs and the “Fill the Bus” campaign.
The Haddix family is showing their children, by example, the importance of giving
back to their community—and lucky for our community; their children love every
minute of it!
Community
ommunity Service
The concept of “family” comes naturally to the Shane and Amy
Sanders family. Upon meeting them, one thing is immediately
evident—this is a family built on a strong foundation of love and
acceptance.
Shane and Amy met after high school and soon were married. Their marriage
blessed them with two children—Logan, 16; and Mackenzie, 13. Over the years,
Shane became a Master in Songahm Taekwondo. He founded Sanders ATA
Martial Arts, now with five metro locations and close to 400 students.
Through Amy’s work as a nurse with the Children’s Respite Child Care Center,
the Sanders family has spent a great deal of time together volunteering to help
children who have special needs. In 2004, Zach arrived at the center as a foster
child. He was born prematurely with a crack cocaine addiction. Despite being told
that Zach would have developmental setbacks, Amy was smitten with this little guy.
Soon the entire Sanders family fell head over heals in love with him. Remarkably, it
was Shane and Amy’s children who begged to make Zachary a part of their family.
Logan and Mackenzie felt so fortunate to have such great parents—they wanted
to give Zach a family, too.

After careful consideration, Shane and Amy became foster parents and by 2006
had officially adopted Zach into the Sanders family. Zach continues to challenge
the doctors’ warnings as he develops into a healthy and active seven-year old.
In 2007 the family fell in love again—this time with little Carly, who has battled an
inoperable cancerous tumor in her neck since her birth. It wasn’t long before the
family wanted to take Carly into their arms and help her as she faced her many
health challenges. This time, all three children wanted to share their family with
this little girl. It wasn’t long before the Sanders family welcomed Carly into their
home permanently.
Together, these four children are the focus and the joy of Shane and Amy’s
world. Despite the special needs of their family, each feels blessed to have these
challenges in their life, and can’t imagine their family any other way.
Challenged
hallenged & Successful
When Ryan and Anna were just young children, the Hildebrand
family was rocked by a terrible tragedy. ReAnn’s husband, Dean,
died unexpectedly of a sudden massive heart attack in front of their
two children. At the time, Ryan was 10 years old and Anna was just 8.
Dean had been a loving and devoted husband and father, and his death left a
painful void in the Hildebrand family’s life. After his passing, ReAnn faced many
challenges: The challenge of keeping her family together. The challenge of healing
her young children. And, because Dean had owned and operated a local feed
company in Oakland, she also faced the challenge of keeping their “mom and pop”
business going in order to support her family. The work was hard, and proved to
be more than a single mom could handle. Friends and neighbors pitched in to help
keep the business afloat. ReAnn struggled with the conflict of two very important
priorities—to grow her husband’s legacy through his business, or to invest that
energy in helping their children grow to their potential. She knew what Dean’s
advice would be, and eventually she sold the company.
These were hard times for the family. But through ReAnn’s enduring strength
and fierce love for her children, they pulled together and worked through these
challenges—as a family. The three of them are incredibly close, and lean on each
other through every trial and celebration. This tragedy has given them a unique
perspective, and they have an admirable ability to focus on what is important in life.

Today Ryan is a sophomore at University of South Dakota studying English, and is
a member of the college marching band. Anna, a senior at Riverside High School,
is a natural athlete and has participated with the school’s golf, volleyball, softball
and basketball teams.
Their commitment, support and love for one another have strengthened the
Hildebrand family bond, and helped them to overcome the difficulties they face.
Each family member is well-prepared to grow into the future.
