make sure children and adults with autism get
the services and supports they need.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
is the fastest-growing developmental
disability in America today. While
parents of children with ASD often learn
early on what kind of treatment and
services are needed, it can be difficult
to gain access to them. It is crucial
that effective services, treatment, and
education for children and adults with
ASD are accessed as quickly as possible.
The earlier they receive appropriate
services, the better the prognosis.
To help parents take action after their child has been
diagnosed with ASD, Staten Island’s autism services providers
worked together to compile our Borough’s first-ever comprehensive
resource guide to better support and inform local families and
professionals. This handy booklet provides detailed contact
information for autism organizations on Staten Island that offer
services to both children and adults. Finding the right place for
autism treatment and services can be a difficult process, but we
hope that this new resource guide will help make that journey
easier.
A diagnosis of ASD presents real challenges for parents and
caregivers. While the medical community seeks to find answers to
the causes of ASD, we have an obligation to help those living with
it. I hope that you will find this guide useful, and I urge you to
become active in the Staten Island autism community. We need the
help of parents, grandparents, doctors, educators, and friends to
continue to build the support and assistance needed to improve the
lives of loved ones with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

that support students on the autism spectrum
The A.S.D. Nest program
is the New York City Department of
Education’s Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT)
program for higher functioning children with
autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Each
classroom has two teachers with training in the
specialized curricula and instructional strategies
used in the program. Nestled within supportive
neighborhood schools, the ASD Nest program
helps children with ASD learn how to function
well academically, behaviorally and socially in
school and in their community. The ASD Nest
program opened in September 2003 at PS 32
in Brooklyn with nine children on the autism
spectrum. The program has since expanded
throughout the city, including two schools on
Staten Island: P.S. 4 which provides ASD Nest
for students in grades K-5, and newly opened
this year P.S. 69 with one Kindergarten class.
Note: There is a screening process to determine
student eligibility for this program, conducted
by the ASD evaluation team at the Committee
on Special Education (CSE).

in Staten Island have developed an 8:1:1 selfcontained program for students with ASD who
need more intensive educational supports. In
addition to a structured learning environment,
in-class occupational therapy and speech
therapy are a vital component of this program.
Note: Identification of students for this program is
determined through the special education evaluation
and IEP review processes as conducted in schools
and at the CSE office.

in Staten Island supports students with ASDs in
grades 6-8 with methods and resource teachers
and paraprofessionals.
The diagnostic assessment for the Transitional
Asperger Program reflects the unique nature
of the educational environment and support
services provided for the students in this
Intermediate School program. The diagnostic
evaluation is designed to identify characteristics
associated with Asperger’s Syndrome, as
well as the severity or subtlety of those
characteristics. This program is designed to
meet the needs of those students who could
achieve educational success within the general
education environment with support. The
evaluation process for the incoming school year
usually begins in the middle of March, with
cases conferenced by the end of May, beginning
of June.

that support students on the autism spectrum
New Dorp High School
has a program for high functioning ASD
students in grades 9 - 11. The school is divided
into “Small Learning Communities” and the
students select which academy they wish to
attend. There is a “Resource Teacher” who
serves a dual role as the Special Education
Services and Supports provider and also as
the teacher in the “Center”. The Center is a
place for the ASD students to go for academic
and social situation assistance. A trained
social worker and speech therapist work with
the students on IEP goals, socialization and
activities of everyday life. The students travel
to classes in general education as well as special
education settings, based on their various
academic needs and IEPS. A paraprofessional
is present in each class. Opportunities for
socialization are developed and joining school
clubs, teams and attendance at events is
encouraged. Eighth grade students apply to
New Dorp High School’s TAP Program when
their parents and school staff believe they are
capable of succeeding in a general education
high school setting, with support services.
Students who enter into the program must
have Asperger’s Syndrome as a primary, Axis
I diagnosis. After initial screening and review
of the IEP, the child and family will be invited
to New Dorp for an interview so that all parties
can determine the appropriateness of fit. Once
students are accepted to the school, they will
elect to join one of eight Smaller Learning
Communities based on their strengths and
interests.
Prospective students are given ample
opportunity to acquaint themselves with the
school and its expectations. Visits are arranged
throughout the 8th grade year, and students are
able to meet and become comfortable with
teachers, support staff and other students in the
TAP Program. From the intake process through
each child’s high school career, focus is placed
on increasing independence in preparation for
college and the world of work.

Program staff regularly assesses students’
progress and needs, encouraging autonomy
while providing needed support. TAP students
meet daily with the Program Coordinator
and participate in regular Social Skills and
Counseling Groups. They attend classes with
mainstream students and are encouraged to get
involved in extra-curricular activities in the
school.

Tottenville High School
has ASD students in all four grades. The
school provides a 1st period “Breakfast Club”
which is run by the social worker and speech
therapist. This time is used to develop social
skills and work on activities of everyday life.
A social club also meets after school and takes
trips. Students are also encouraged to join other
school-wide clubs, organizations and teams.
Students receive instruction in a variety of
educational settings, including honors classes,
based on their individual needs in each subject
and in accordance with their IEP. A Transition
Planning class is also offered. Related and
support services are also provided according
to the IEP. This is a zoned High School.

throughout New York City. Our mission is
to ensure instructional practices that reflect
the individual needs of these students
including those with diverse cultural and
linguistic backgrounds.
Based on assessment, our instruction
is focused on the behavior and
communication needs of students, giving
special attention to the incorporation of
recognized techniques, strategies and
methodologies.
Our students are provided with all related
services that are needed to support them
and help them access instruction. Our
programs serve those from 3 years to
21 years of age. Preschool students are
instructed in a classroom ratio of 8:1:2,
and our school age students in a ratio of
6:1:1. All students with ASD have options
for participation, when appropriate, in
inclusion programs as well as movement to
a less restrictive environment.
Professional development is a key
component of our programming and
we offer instruction to staff in the
application of methodologies such as
Treatment and Education of Autistic and
Other Communicatively handicapped
Children (TEACCH), Picture Exchange
Communication Systems (PECS), Applied
Behavior Analysis (ABA), Discrete Trial
Training (DTT), and Natural Environment
Training (NET).
