Harvest Basket Workshop (EN) Mondays, September 24 & October 1, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Join Linda Heidenfelder for this two-part basket weaving workshop and learn how to weave a beautiful harvest basket. Songs & Stories Children birth to 36 months with parent/caregiver and siblings Families will enjoy thematic musical programs presenting songs and fingerplays. -4- FOR CHILDREN In The Museum Cove: Striking A Chord @ Your Library The Northport Library Museum Cove is pleased to present its newest exhibit and program series, Striking a Chord @ Your Library, featuring The Long Island Philharmonic. The exhibit opens in September and will run through December. Among the materials that children will enjoy are musical instruments, photographs, posters, concert programs, sheet music, recordings, and books. The Long Island Philharmonic was founded in 1979 by folk singer Harry Chapin in collaboration with Maestro Christopher Keene and several area business leaders. Now entering its 23rd season, the Philharmonic recently appointed David Wiley as its fourth music director. Mr. Wiley is admired as one of the most dynamic young music directors in America and one of his immediate goals is to deepen the orchestra’s roots in the community. The Philharmonic performs a standard classical European repertoire, premieres performance works, commissions new compositions, and champions works of twentieth century American composers. Its versatility is highlighted by performances with artists such as Marvin Hamlisch, James Taylor, and Al Jarreau. The Long Island Philharmonic is one of the most active and widely-supported regional orchestras in the nation. It provides cultural and educational benefits of the highest level to Long Islanders. The Remarkable Farkle McBride by John Lithgow Young musical prodigy Farkel McBride tries many different instruments before discovering that what he likes best is conducting the orchestra. Music by Carol Diggory Shields Riddles in verse and drawings of instruments encourage readers to open flaps and reveal an animal. We All Sing with the Same Voice by J. Philip Miller and Sheppard M. Greene This joy-filled Sesame Street song becomes a cheerful picture book about children’s universal thoughts and feelings. Giving to the Library When you make a charitable contribution, you want to be sure that your money will be used effectively to improve the quality of life in your community. A gift to the Northport-East Northport Public Library is an excellent way to enhance library services to the Northport-East Northport area. There are several options for giving a gift to the Library: Direct Donations: Donations can be made to purchase library materials, equipment, or to sponsor library programs. Memorial Contributions: Gifts in memory or in honor of a friend or loved one are welcomed. Contributions may be made to purchase library materials. Library staff will carefully select materials and a commemorative book plate will be placed in each item. Donations of Materials: Books and other materials may be donated to either library location. Materials not used in the library’s collection will be sold at Friends of the Library book sales. The continued excellence of our library service is a tribute to the generosity and support of its community members. Northport Gallery: Photographs of New York City by Neil Scholl and Ray Germann For many years, Neil Scholl and Ray Germann have exhibited their projects together, including their Montauk Highway and Carmans River shows. For this exhibit they worked separately, photographing the same subject at different times. A professional photographer and graphic designer, Neil Scholl is a retired professor of Fine Arts at the New York Institute of Technology. His photographs of New York City were taken between 1948 and 1972. Photographer Ray Germann, who is also a professional saxophone player, has documented New York City for the past twenty years. His work is in both private and museum collections. East Northport Gallery: Paintings by JoAnn Corretti Artist JoAnn Coretti’s paintings and prints have become familiar features at local art shows and galleries. Parent Center programs, which begin this month, offer informative workshops and support groups. An extensive collection of books on a wide variety of parenting topics are available through the Parent Center. These print resources are maintained at the Northport Library and are added to on a continuous basis in collaboration with the School District. Parent Center programs are free and all district library card holders are welcome. Registration takes place at the Library approximately two weeks in advance of each program. Enrollment in our programs is limited, with preference given to library card holders.
