The Knightline is the official newsletter of the Norwin High School Marching Band Parents Association. It is published the first of every month
and the online e-version is sent to all band parents, staff and alumni. Printed versions are sent to all current band parents who do not have email.

President’s Message-September 2008
It’s hard to believe, but summer has come and gone.
The kids have been working diligently and have
successfully completed band camp. During August,
we had great weather for our Car Wash, and for
Kennywood, and finally for the Preview Show. As
you will read in this issue of the Knightline, the
Band Aides have been working hard as well.
Planning is nearly complete for the 48th Annual
Norwin Band Festival, and our 2008 Concession
Stand campaign is underway. Travel planning is
on-going for our Transportation Committees so that
we get both students and parents safely and
comfortably to and from our travel competitions
this year. Our season of working at Heinz field and
parking at the High School have begun on schedule.
We’ve got some exciting things initiated in the
Development arena, and we’ve already begun
planning for our holiday and winter events. As I
told you all at the June General Meeting, this year’s
budget depends upon increased participation in our
fundraisers . . . and I’m happy to report that many
of you are answering the call; our fundraising
efforts appear to be on-track so far. Everyone, keep
up the good work!
Thanks to all who are providing their Fair Share on
schedule. Please keep in mind that we need to have
your Marching Season Fair Share accounted for by
September 30th in order for your student(s) to be
eligible for the trip to St. Louis. The band needs
each and every member on the field to compete to
its full potential . . . we’re counting on everyone to
be there! If you have questions or concerns with
the Fair Share, please feel free to contact myself,
Mr. Traugh or Shari Smith. We will get your
questions answered.

Football Team all the support we can throughout
the season. Cheer loud and proud and let them
know we’re behind them 100 percent.

A Note from the Director
Friends & Supporters,
The season is underway and the show is coming
together piece by piece. Though it is still very early
in the production stages of what the show will end
up becoming I can assure you that this will be a
Norwin Favorite when it all comes together.
The process for learning a show has changed much
over the years. When I was in the marching band in
high school it was common for us to have most of
our show on the field by the time September rolled
around. All we had to do in high school was make
sure the music sounded great and march from dot to
dot. Of course, there would be changes along the
way but they were few and far between in most
years. The skills used in the performance of a
marching band show today are so diverse and span
several disciplines. These students will become
masters of multi-tasking. Marching Band is no
longer a connect-the-dot approach. Trust me that
the demands musically are still the same. We still
reach to achieve very high levels of musicianship.
In fact the feeling of performance is much like a
concert ensemble performance. The type of show is
much more thought-out and involved from a design
standpoint. Today there is always something new
to learn in the process that we teach the performer
to increase their enjoyment and performance
quality. This type of process gives the performer a
more thoughtful product which they have more fun
performing. This will ultimately translate into
much more exciting performances for the audience
as well. Competitive marching band has always
been an art of mastery. The approach of - If you
are going to be involved in something why not do it
to your best ability? The evolution that has
occurred in the last ten years has kept that mastery
standard and taken the activity into a higher level of
performance art. The best part of all of this is each
performance rehearsal, football game or
competition will get more and more exciting for
everyone involved.
The band is having a great year so far and I am very
excited for the months to come. As I tell the
students - this is the best part of the season. The
performance aspect is why they come back year
after year. There truly is no feeling that can match
performing in an elite ensemble.
Thank you for driving your student to and from
rehearsals throughout the long month of August. I
know that behind all of these students is a strong
support system in their friends and families that
allow them to make a commitment to work hard at
whatever it is they do. I hope you all have a great
month of September and enjoy the performances
these young people have to offer.

48th Annual Band Festival Notes
Next committee meeting is Wednesday, Sept. 3rd, 7
PM room 313. (near Band door #9).
We are going to have a dry run of the Festival on
Sunday, Sept. 7th, 7:00 pm. (meeting place TBA).
On Monday, Sept. 8, at our scheduled board
meeting, we will attempt to tie up any loose ends
for our Festival. On Friday, Sept. 12, 6:00 p.m. we
will meet at the stadium, in early prep for ...

A Message from Mr. Traugh –Anyone picking up
students from band rehearsals after school should
park in the designated spaces near the entrance to
the music wing.
Band Notes
Medical Report – Marching Season Tips for
Students
2008 Marching season road trips begin soon! It’s
sure to be a great season! Here are some tips for
personal success:
-You want to do your best for all performances!
Be ready to help your teammates by keeping
your body fueled-up (food/drink).
Eat
nutritious foods, especially before performances
(including light meals with complex
carbohydrates such as pasta, fruits and
vegetables). If you need food suggestions,
please contact me for great written suggestions
from a Dietitian to maximize your strategy for
endurance/excellence.
-Drink extra fluids every day to keep yourself
hydrated. Include water, milk and sport drink
(and limit the amount of soda you drink).
(FYI—If you need to limit calories in your diet,
Gatorade has a new drink called G2 that has
less sugar and tastes great!)
-Rest when you can! You have an extremely
busy schedule with school back in session.
Your body is growing and needs rest to perform
at your best.
-Continue to wear sunscreen when needed
(especially Saturday practices!)
-Layer clothing under your uniform when
needed. As the season progresses, the weather
will get colder! You may need to add long
johns/tights/sweats or compression clothing to
keep you warm. You may also need a jacket,
gloves, hat to wear in the stands at football
games. Some students also use chemical
“hand-warmers/foot-warmers”.
You should
NOT use foot warmers if you have diabetes or
circulation problems.
-Apply a water-resistant, protective spray to
your marching shoes (keeps feet drier on cold
rainy nights).
Remember your BLACK
SOCKS.
-You will receive an “itinerary” for trips
including a “packing list”. Be sure to pack
snacks/drinks for the trip. You can have them
as long as you are not in uniform.
-Label personal belongings.
It’s easy to
misplace things or pick up the wrong clothing
on a crowded bus.
-Take a pillow/small blanket for trips and wear
comfortable clothing on the bus. Keep all
necessities on your “carry-on” bag. You won’t
be able to get to your luggage very easily when
traveling.
-Pack enough personal products for the
trip(contact solutions, feminine pads/tampons)
-MEDICATIONS: Let the medical committee
know if you need to take medication during the
trip. We will carry it with us, if you like, or you
may be responsible for it yourself. If possible,
adjust timing for prescription medication so it is
taken before or after performances. Medication
given to the medical committee member for use
as “as needed” will only be given if you request
it. If you have your own over-the-counter
medications, DO NOT SHARE THEM
WITH ANYONE! The medical staff has
Tylenol, ibuprofen, etc. If you have a
possible medical issue, ask for help.

Parking - The Band Aides get paid for directing
the flow of traffic to the parking lots during all
home football games in the fall, including any playoff games. This is a fairly easy and fun task. At
least 12 parents, men or women, are needed to be at
these games. The parking committee needs to be at
football games about 90 minutes before the start of
the game and work until a few minutes after the
game starts. Parking volunteers can be signed up at
the general meetings. Anyone able to help out or
needing more details, please contact Sheldon Blon

concession stand (CS) orientation before the
preview show. We trust the information and
introduction to the CS was helpful.
Starting on September 2, there will be no less than
42 events at the high school stadium CS including
the Norwin Band Festival on Saturday September
13. There is also the possibility of hosting playoff
games for any of the Norwin fall sports teams or
hosting a neutral playoff site game. This provides
all of us the opportunity to work the events at the
CS and raise the necessary funds to support our
wonderful band and guard students. The average
revenue earned from the CS during the year
contributes $250 to $350 per student to support the
band and guard activities.
As a reminder, band families are requested to work
a minimum of three week day fall sport events and
one Friday night home football game to earn the
$50 reduction to their student’s fair share account.
Guard and floor crew families are able to work a
minimum of six week day fall sport events and two
Friday night home football games to earn a $50
reduction for colorguard and a $50 reduction for
winterguard and floor crew fair share accounts.
Please consider helping out at the CS if you are not
planning on traveling with the band on Saturday,
September 6 (Kiski Competition), Saturday,
September 27 (BOA Regional at Massillon), and
Saturday, October 18 (BOA Super Regional at St.
Louis). Since the final payment for each student’s
fair share is due September 30, if you scheduled CS
duty after September 30, you will be required to
submit a separate check to the Norwin Band Aides
for your final $50. Your $50 check will be returned
to you after you have worked all four required CS
events.
Thank you to those of you who have already begun
to schedule and work at the CS. As soon as we
complete the process of recording those who prescheduled their work dates into the event schedule,
the CS schedule will be turned over to the class
schedulers. The class schedulers will be contacting
each band family by class to complete the schedules
for the remainder of the fall events at the high
school stadium. Following are the class CS
schedulers: Freshman Class – Kathy Brunson,
Sophomore Class – Linda Peterson, Junior Class –
Melody Haras, and Senior Class - ???. A senior
parent CS scheduler is still needed so if you are a
senior parent that would like to help with the CS
scheduling, please contact Kathy Herchko at
[email protected]. Scheduling ensures that we
have enough workers for an event as well as respect
for your time. Since the CS is a fun, happening
place, you are always welcome to work more than
the required four minimum events.
Help is always needed at the CS so alumni and
alumni parents, please feel free to help with any CS
event. You are always welcome! So that our
current band parents may attend various band
competitions, alumni and alumni parents will be
needed to help at the CS on Saturday, September 6
(Kiski Competition), Saturday, September 27 (BOA
Regional at Massillon), and Saturday, October 18
(BOA Super Regional at St. Louis). If alumni
would like to work for a current band family to
receive CS work credit, they would have to work a
full CS shift just as current band families have to
do. When an alumni schedules to work, they can
say who they are working for so that a particular
family can receive their CS credit. Of course,
anybody is always welcome to stop by and work the
concession stand at their leisure, but they will not
receive CS credit unless they work the complete CS
event. If you are an alumni or an alumni parent and
want to schedule to work at the CS, please contact
Kathy Herchko at [email protected].
Norwin Band Aides will host our Norwin Band
Festival on Saturday, September 13. This is
considered the premiere band festival in our area.
The band festival does not count toward an event
time worked in the CS as ALL Norwin Band Aides
parents should work at the band festival. Everyone
should be working different areas of the festival
throughout the day, so be sure to schedule your CS
time. You will be able to schedule your time in the
CS in three hour time blocks from 2 – 5 p.m., 5 – 8
p.m. and 8 p.m. – clean-up. If you have not already
scheduled a time for the band festival CS, please email Kathy Herchko at [email protected].
Calling all haluski cooks! This is a popular CS
food item, especially for home football games and
our band festival. If you have made haluski in the
past, we hope you will be able to help us out again
this year. If you are new to the band family and/or
you want to try your hand at making haluski this
year, you will find the recipe on page 8. We also
have large aluminum roasting pans available in the
CS if you need one to make and transport your

haluski. You are welcome to stop by the CS during
any of the CS events and pick up a pan.
If you haven’t figured it out already, there will be a
lot going on in the band family over the next few
months. Working together, we can accomplish
great things as “Multiples of
. “ Before you
know it, the band and CS season will be over and
all that will be left are wonderful memories.

donate 3 dozen cookies for the Norwin Festival on
Saturday, September, 13th.
Cookies may be
dropped off at the stadium when you bring your
child for practice that morning. Future band notes
will be sent out regarding the time. If anyone
would like to volunteer to package cookies or sell

Development Development – Part 4 of 12/Mike
Ziemski, Development Committee Chair
These articles are designed to help everyone
understand the nature of moving from a fundraising
mindset to a development mindset in order to fund
the activities we provide for our children.
When you attend the 48th Annual Norwin Band
Festival on September 13, 2008, you will notice an
advertisement in the program specifying the Norwin
Band Aides’ United Way identification number. If
you can participate in the United Way, then you can
direct all or a portion of your contribution to the
Norwin Band Aides. If you work for an employer
that matches gifts to the United Way, your
contribution may be doubled, or even tripled if your
employer has a 2 to 1 matching gift program!
While this is great news for the Norwin Band, this
is where development can become threatening.
Last month’s article spoke about the nonthreatening nature of fundraising (since “everyone”
fundraises) and the threatening nature of
development (since it has the potential to bring in
significant
dollars
from
individuals
and
organizations engaged in the mission of the
organization). Since a donor’s contribution amount
may be limited, choosing the Norwin Band as a gift
recipient may mean that other organizations may
not receive as large a portion of funding as they did
in previous years. Some overarching organization
also may not allow a smaller, affiliated organization
to solicit contributions unless their “prospects” are
reviewed by the larger group. Even though the
larger organization may be successful in securing
the gift, it is still the donor’s prerogative to direct
the contribution to the affiliated organization rather
than the overarching organization. A gift cannot be
forced; therefore, the donor must not be forced to
choose one organization or the other. It is up to the
donor to decide where his or her contribution will
be directed. The more a potential donor is engaged
with the mission of an organization, the more likely
it is for the donor to direct their gift to that
organization’s efforts.
Next month’s article will focus on how we’re
working to increase potential donor engagement.

NORWIN BANDWEAR
As many of you already know, I am
“wingin’ it”; “flying solo”; whatever you
want to call it, this marching band
season with the Norwin Bandwear
Committee, and with the season and festival t-shirt
sales. My “resident artist” a/k/a significant other –
co-chair has been presidentially called up to take
part in the war efforts and will be stationed in
Russia for 30-45days, and will therefore not be
available to help in the “long awaited” band wear
and t-shirt sales. Before leaving, Steve was able to
design and implement the designs for the t-shirts. I
now ask for your patience in order placing and
deliveries, but mostly in keeping the order
deadlines. These deadlines are to assist in my
sanity throughout this process, as well as to
accommodate everyone with filling orders.

Two separate emails went out in Band Notes on
September 20th, attaching order forms for the
Multiples of One and the Norwin Festival t-shirts.
Thank you Terri for helping me out with that!! If
you don’t have email accounts, and need copies of
these order forms, please see me on the Hill during
practices. I usually get there around 8:00 pm. The
order forms will give you all the information you
need in placing orders. You may also contact me
by email or phone with questions. Please no phone
orders. I need to have order forms from everyone.
Seasonal band wear items will be made available
for ordering at the General Meetings. Please plan to
attend these meetings so that you can order the
Band sweat shirts, sweat pants, hats, etc. for those
chilly, and sometimes cold, rainy and even snowy
band competitions. We Veteran Band Parents have
endured all weather conditions.
Come watch your band member practice. You’ll be
astonished to see how the show comes together.
Our kids will surely take the competitive arena by
storm this year!! See you on the Hill!

FUNDRAISING INFO
Entertainment books are here!! -The Band is
selling Entertainment Books again this year. The
sale will run from now through October. Pittsburgh
and Pittsburgh East books are available for $20.00
each. A portion of the band’s profit from the sale
will be credited to your student’s account. These
books can be sold to friends, family, co-workers –
anybody! They also make great gifts.
Do you have a city you visit often for business or
vacation? Purchase an Entertainment Book for that
city and you and the Norwin Band get the profit for
that book. Have family out of town or out of state?
Have them purchase an Entertainment book for
their city through you, and you and the Band get the
profit.

crazy!! 300 were purchased by you, our dedicated
band parents in only three weeks!! Remember the
band earns 50 cents for every D.Q. Dollar used at
our local Irwin Dairy Queen.

Hoagie Sales – Thanks to EVERYONE who
ordered (and delivered!) Hoagies in the month of
August. It was a RECORD-MAKING month. We
sold 893 HOAGIES!! Every hoagie matters and
every order makes a difference! You, too, can be a
part of the Norwin Band Hoagie excitement.
We have two vendors – Stratwood and Jo-Jo's. All
hoagies are 12" and cost $5. Profit on each hoagie
is about $2.40 and a portion of that goes toward
your student's Fair Share obligation. So the more
hoagies you sell, the more the Band and your
student benefit

Fall Hardy Mum Sale-Orders are due to me by

at 5:30 pm near the Band Room door. Color choice
is on a first come first serve basis.
Vera Bradley Sale -The Vera Bradley sale will
start on September 2nd. If you are interested, see
me on the hill for a catalog. Orders are due

Recycling (printer and copier supplies, cell
phones) - Used inkjet and laser printer, fax, toner and
copier cartridges can be put in the box in the Band Room
or call Chris to arrange to meet – check at work to see if
you can take what they are normally throwing away!
Cell phones are also accepted – please recharge battery
and leave it attached.

Haluski Recipe……
1 head cabbage, cut into bite size pieces
1 large onion, chopped
½ c. butter or more
1 lb. wide egg noodles
Salt and pepper
Cook cabbage, onion, and ½ c. butter in frying pan until the cabbage is wilted. Stir frequently and add
additional butter if needed. Cook egg noodles according to package directions and drain. Combine
cabbage mixture with noodles. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Mix well and cover with a lid or
foil. Triple recipe to fill a large aluminum roasting pan.
