Abstract
Chinese Desserts is an iPhone App that will educate users
on common Chinese desserts, the health benefits of certain
dessert items, nutritional information, festive desserts, and
modern desserts. A majority of traditional Chinese desserts
are made with herbs in concordance with traditional Chinese
medicine. Chinese desserts are normally steamed and stewed,
which keeps the nutritional value of these foods intact; typical
Western desserts tend not to be as healthy and, in abundance
can actually be negative for your health. There are a variety of
modern and traditional desserts covered. The target age group
ranges anywhere from 15 to 75 years old, male or female. The
target market may be people who are interested in the health
benefits of Chinese desserts and/or people who want to explore
interesting and fun desserts to make at home. Each recipe comes
with nutritional information and tutorials that will assist users
in the learning process. The short preparation instructions are
clear and easy to understand; this, along with many nice images,
help beginners and experts alike learn how to prepare the stepby-step recipes. I believe this high fidelity prorotype will be a fun
and useful app for those people that have an interest in Chinese
desserts and for those who are health conscious.

Statement of Interest
I am excited to pursue this concept and combine my graphic
design background, web tech and interactive design skills. I will
show my skills and experience of layout design, typography
hierarchy, illustration, photography, researching, sketching and
coding to create a IOS App. I do not yet know how to address
mobile technology; however, with my usability and interactive
design skills, I can create a prototype and an interface. The full
development of this project will use all of my creative talents
and technical skills, and it will allow me to share my love of
Chinese desserts and culture. During this process, I will be able
to communicate with users and be able to understand their needs
and desires. For my future studies, I will consider taking classes,
such as: Mobile Applications, Time Based Media Scripting and
Web Technology. Also, there are some new HTML5 languages
I would like to learn. I believe this project will be a valuable
experience for me, and it will enrich my skills and allow me to
apply my new knowledge to the professional design field.

Competitive Analysis
French Cakes, Pastries and Jams
Pros: The interface is clean and simple. Users can search for
recipes using the contents page, according to preparation time,
or key words through the simple search facility. It includes videos
and tips.
Cons: The recipes are poorly translated and lack key information.
There’s no index; users have to use a scroll bar at the bottom of
the page to browse the contents, and the help menu is minimal.

The Photo Cookbook – Baking
Pros: The photographs are beautiful. Every recipe begins with a
picture illustrating all the ingredients used in the recipe. Every
recipe is rounded out with an opulent picture of the finished
product.
Cons: There are only a few recipes. Some negative comments:
“I’ve made a few of the things, and they tasted terrible. The
textures were all wrong.”

Martha Stewart Cookies
Pros: Browse cookies by category and search by flavor or type.
These are useful functions. The app has great recipes, shopping
links, videos and a place to add the users’ own notes.
Cons: No nutritional information for the cookies, brownies,
biscuits, etc. For example: fat, carbs, fiber, and protein.

Foodgawker
Pros: Browse food photos by latest submissions, popular posts
(most clicked/most favorite), and category. This app has recipes,
restaurant reviews and new trends from thousands of food
bloggers. In addition, the user can shake the device to get a
random thumbnail photo and a recipe.
Cons: The logo doesn’t match the concept. The user is incapable
of categorizing favorites. Some of the pictures don’t match the
screen.

Pros: The layout of the site is very clean and bright. This simple
design looks organized and is easy to read. This site has a variety
of photos and allows the user to share their experiences and
comments.
Cons: This site is only organized by the date and time in the U.S.
It’s not easy to find information from the main site.

Unique Positioning Statement
The unique position of Chinese desserts is that users are able to
explore and educate themselves on common, Chinese desserts
and then apply that knowledge by preparing and cooking these
desserts for a variety of purposes. Secondly, users are able to
learn about the medicinal and health values of Chinese medicine.
Thirdly, users learn how to bake traditional and modern Chinese
desserts in just a few steps for holidays and special events.
Users can also learn the historical background for the traditional
desserts. To browse the desserts by category, users have three
options. The first option is: “Common Desserts”, which illustrates
the most common desserts by use of photos, thereby allowing
users to choose a photo and receive the related recipe. The
photo gallery is appealing to users. The photos make it easier for
users to choose a dessert based on the look of the final product.
The second option is: “Healthy Desserts”, which allows users
to search for a dessert based on their desires to heal an issue
or ailment and/or for low calorie desserts. The third option is:
“Festive and Modern Desserts”, which allows users to learn how
to prepare festive and modern desserts for any occasion and/
or event. Each recipe contains nutritional information, stepby-step directions, cooking times and a breakdown of all of
the ingredients. Users can also search for recipes through the
contents page according to preparation time, filterd, key words,
and ingredients through our search facility. When users choose
a dessert, the app will provide everything on one page: recipes,
photos, nutritional information, timing and shopping lists. There
is also a place to add recipes to favorites, share dessert recipes by
email, and/or post to Facebook.

Target Audience
The audience is male or female from 15 to 75 years old. The
primary target audience are people who are interested in
exploring and learning about Chinese desserts. Others include
dessert-lovers and cooks, as well as people who are interested
in cooking for special events and holidays. The secondary target
audience are health-conscious individuals and/or people who
need to heal an ailment, including people that are seeking lowcalorie/healthier desserts.

About me
Autobiography
My name is Xun Er Liu and I am from China. I am a graduate
student studying Web design and New Media at the Academy
of Art University. My passion for design started at a young age.
During my childhood, I spent a lot of time drawing cartoons and
making clothes for my dolls. However, it took life experiences for
me to realize my true talents in design.
Later in life, my desire to live abroad led me to study in England.
During the five years I lived there, I obtained a Masters degree in
Marketing Communications and later became certified in Graphic
Design. My decision to pursue a design career was influenced
by a close friend of mine. She was able to see my talent with
design and encouraged me to change career paths. I will always
be thankful for my friend’s encouragement because I truly enjoy
design and look forward to a long and successful career.
Throughout my life, I have traveled to the United Kingdom,
Australia, France, Mexico, Germany, and many cities in the United
States. Traveling is an inspiration for me; it ignited my love for
photography and continues to fuel my creativity. To get new
design ideas, I enjoy researching various forms of art, exploring
the city, and brainstorming through my sketches.
Currently, I am working on communicating ideas through
visual mediums and design. This is a creative process that
combines art and technology to communicate ideas. On a daily
basis, I am working towards my dream of being an Interactive
Designer. Specifically, I envision myself both working with
visual representations such as interfaces and designing with an
emphasis on meeting the goals and desires of the user.

Darkness, in contrast with brightness,
is a relative absence of visible light. It is
the appearance of black in a color space.
The emotional reaction to darkness has
metaphorical importance in many cultures.
As a poetic term in the Western world,
darkness can also mean the presence of
shadows, evil, or depression. Religious texts
often use darkness to make a visual point. In
Chinese philosophy Yin is the feminine part of
the Taijitu and is represented by a dark lobe. In
Old English there were three words that could
mean darkness: heolstor, genip, and sceadu.
